I'm 74. I grew up listening to all kinds of great music. It was so normal. And now it gives me great pleasure watching you react to these oldies, but goodies. Keep it up!!
Me too. You know I think it’s because we were at the mercy of radio. Maybe one or two stations. They controlled what we heard. You didn’t know what they looked like until you saw the album or they got on the Midnight Special or Ed Sullivan 😂
Listen to the long studio version, not the short one. The format is more like this live one, but of course with a cleaner sound pickups and better mix.
Doors live performances could famously be hit & miss - if they were "on" they were absolutely incredible - but they had many "off" nights where jim was too high (he liked LSD) or drunk, and things went off the rails - it was like a highwire act without a safety net. Jim was an incredible poet who probably should have never become a Rockstar - he's one in the "27 Club" who died far too young & we missed out on what more he could have given us. Of the biggest 60s rock bands, the Doors (and Pink Floyd) were always my favorite. Jim explored some really dark places with his art... When they performed this live on I believe the Ed Sullivan show, they were asked not to say "...couldn't get much higher" - Jim just belted it extra loud on live TV. And yeah, he was the coolest of cool...
The Doors were banned from Ed Sullivan show for that. Change the lyric or you're off the show. Told they would never do the show again I believe Morrisons reply was, We just did it. The Stones had a similar situation singing Let's Spend the Night Together and were told to change the lyric to Lets Spend Some Time Together and they did change it!!!
Say Hey MB, Loved your reaction to The Doors. I'm a big fan of them..and you. If you listen to the studio version of 'Light My Fire,' you will hear a much more dynamic performance with much better vocals from JM. His voice is, frankly, pretty shot sounding here and he doesn't even attempt the high notes or vocal nuances. Seeing a legend perform live is exciting but this is not a great example of Jim, or the band, at their best.
I imagine they saved this for a closer and maybe the previous songs that night shredded his vocals to the point that he didn't trust his higher register to hold out. Cool alternative note choices though, I must say. Just guessing. Still the atmosphere and dynamics were great for the whole band, they delivered on what the Doors did best.
He was banned from the Ed Sullivan show for singing the line " girl we couldn't get much higher " they wanted him to change that lyric because they said it promotes drug use Morrison refused to change it. ✌️❤️
Ray Manzarek was a great friend of mine. Went to his home many times to hang out with him and his family. He had great parties too. He was such a good down to earth Human!
You have no idea the joy it gives me seeing your sweet face reacting to the music i grew up with your on an amazing journey with people like you our music will live on
Keyboard player, Ray Manzarek is the second most famous guy in the band after Jim. Jim is the songwriter and front man but its Ray who made The Doors signature sound. Remember how you reacted to "Riders on the Storm" and there's this amazing keyboard that mimics the sound of rain falling, well Ray has a great RUclips video where explains how they composed ROTS and he plays pieces of the song and its freaking pretty cool to watch, look it up sometime.
Really high at this one! Jim did a lot of acid. They were definitely keyboard driven by Ray . They were just jamming waiting for Jim to feel the song again!! ☮️👵🏼💙
"Love Her Madly" is my personal favorite Doors song...... much faster, driving groove..... better example of Morrison's vocal abilities, and it's just a FUN song!
Hi Mollyboy. I really enjoy your reviews. I’ve noticed that you comment a lot about the long instrumentals on some of this music. As a 73 year old man living in Dallas Texas USA. I lived through all of these types of music. And got to see a lot of these bands in concert. This was often known as Acid Rock or Psychedelic Rock. For a little context that might help you understand the long instrumentals. This was a time before VCR’s, before the Internet, before streaming services when radio stations would only play a 3 min song, It was also anti-Vietnam war and anti establishment culture. So basically this was music for the younger, what’s called the hippie anti-war generation. A lot of drugs, mostly Marijuana but some heavier drugs too. It was a time when you would meet your friends, get high in their living room. Listen to an LP of the song because normally these songs were 15 to 20 minutes long. Maybe a whole side of the album. Too long for the redio stations to play. The long instrumentals were for when you were high and just wanted to mellow out. Usually in the middle of the song when the drugs had kicked in! One time our local radio station "KLIF" anounced that they were going to play "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (1968) (“In the Garden of Eden)” By Iron Butterfly at midnight Friday night. With no commercials and playing the entire 17 min.song! My High School friends freaked out! So if you wanted to hear the entire 17min song you had to be high, in front of your radio or you were SOL! If I can Humbly suggest at some point when you are finishing up a string of reviews. Get a little buzz going and review "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". With the above info in mind to really get the experience. The drum solo is legendary. Sorry this is so long. Much success with your channel! Doug M.
Jim Morrison was one of the most iconic front men in rock-n-roll. The Doors had a very unique sound. Ray Manzerek's keyboards replaced a traditional Bass. Many say the Doors were the Godfathers of Nu Wave music. I remember reading in Rolling Stone Magazine that they had become more popular in 1980 than they had ever been. I think their last studio album was 1971. Just remember that Jim Morrison was a poet, 1st. He was ad-libbing as a musician. His poetry is showcased in the live shows and many songs. IMHO... the man was a tortured soul, but it made for great rock and roll
I have a memory of seeing Jim Morrison on a tv variety show. I think I was 9 yrs old, so that would have been 1968. I wasn’t allowed to listen to “devil” music as we belonged to a strict religious sect. I like to say, “I grew up in a box, but sometimes the world would leak into the box.” And Jim Morrison leaked into my box that moment. He wore all black. He played an acoustic guitar (I think solo) and sang “Light my Fire” really slow. I had no idea what sensuality was, but I remember my whole little body shook. I was mesmerized.
Don’t expect certain things from certain singers or groups. And, don’t be surprised at anything you hear from this era. It was a time of experimentation and the crossing over of genres. It was great! I feel so lucky to have had so many incredible artists making music at this time when I was young in the sixties and seventies. The Beatles, The Doors, The Beach Boys, The Animals, The Kinks, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Elton John, Rod Stewart, The Moody Blues, Alice Cooper, Donovan, The Stones and so many more.
Exactly so. We were blessed to hear so much music, music as it had never been heard before, still unique, still awesome. Thanks MollyBoy, but please never compare The Doors to the bland, soulless Muzac (sic) one heard in lifts, ‘cos it’s absolutely not! It was/is as unique as Mozart was in his time. Look how long his music has been giving pleasure to its listeners, how long he’s been studied, this from The Doors, and so much music from the 70’s, is as permanently inspiring as Mozart, and like Pink Floyd, it’s perfect from start to finish ‘cos they were the first. It was the first time anyone anywhere had heard anything like this. That’s what I feel, anyway. Love from Annie, in Cornwall, UK.🙂🌸
Jim Morrison was amazing. The guy was a poet. It's too bad he left us so soon. The Doors were all great instrumentalists. Ray Manzarek inspired me to learn electric keyboard which I play to this day. Thanks, Ray for inspiring me. Thanks Jim, for showing me how to get outside of myself during a particularly difficul time in my life. Good job, Mollyboy, as always.
If you get a chance to watch the Doors movie with Val Kilmer..highly recommend it. The dance party they did to recreate the original back from the 60s..many were from back then and they said it was like being there again. Joy personified
1968 l was 14 year's old, went to a Party and one of the song's was the Doors, "Light My Fire" instantly hooked, In 1971 we lost Jim Morrison age 27, in 1970 we lost Janis Joplin age 27, and in 1970 we lost Jimi Hendrix age 27. We lost the 3 J's within a year Jimi, Janis & Jim may they RIP🙏 the Doors were a exceptional group a whole new sound loved them. Peace 😊✌️ Gary ☮️ Great Reaction👍
I can totally relate.......14 and listening to Light My Fire in the summer of '68. I never got to see Jim or Jimi live, but did catch Janis in concert (Toronto) about 4 months before she died. Those were amazing days when it came to live music!
A lot of people have recommended "Roadhouse Blues" and I'll jump on that train, but I'd also suggest "Peace Frog" -- both these tunes have Morrison belting it out.
Jim Morrison was high as a kite every time he got anywhere near a stage or even a recording session. That’s just the way he lived his life, short as it was. He dyed I believe in Paris the same way he lived his life, high as a kite!!!
My dad saw The Doors live when he was in college. He never missed a chance to rub that fact in my face 😅 especially when I discovered them in high school!! RIP to my Dad and Jim Morrison too 🙏
My friend and I were walking home from our high school on a Saturday in 67, after playing handball, (I can still see the blue Spalding ace in my hand) when Light My Fire started playing on the white transistor radio hanging from my left wrist. It was the first time we'd heard the long version, and when Robby Krieger came in with that solo, we just about broke our necks as we whipped our slack-jawed faces toward each other!😲 Good times✌
Just remember, this is not what we heard on the radio. When they first came, they were always studio versions. Some artists put out live albums but that was after they had already released several albums.
This entire show, specifically this concert, is amazing! "When the musics over", from this concert is fantastic! I think youd like the Ed Sullivan show whrn they performed this one live.
If you want more Doors' Greatness: 1. LA Woman - IMO, this is the Best Rock and Roll Song. Mr. Mojo Rising indeed. 2. Roadhouse Blues - Unbelievable combination of Blues + Rock. Do the Studio Version, so you'll be able to hear the Harmonica. Has both Piano and Guitar Solos. 3. Break on Through - Short and Sweet, but packs a punch. 4. The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat) - If you want something Experimental. Rock and Roll and Poetry. 5. The End - If you want a Greek Epic, with a Psychedelic Rock backdrop.
@@pudder68 I didn't even mention some of my favorites, like Soul Kitchen, Love Me Two Times, etc. There are just too many Great Doors Song. I thought I'd start with the Crowd Pleasers first. I had to write The End, since it's the OG. If he likes it, then we can recommend, When the Music's Over, Soft Parade, Shaman's Blues, etc.
😂😂😁 also my brother, if you’re watching the full version of this song from their Hollywood bowl performance, he does some poetry in the middle right after the instrumental and then finishes the song which he was known to do from time to time excellent lyricist and poet🔥🔥🔥
For me, one of the best part of your reactions is watching you totally vibe to the music. You don’t just listen, I feel as though you absorb it through your pores! I sincerely hope you live a really long life while taking such joy in great music of every genre!! My grandchildren laugh because I have everything from classical to heavy metal and hip hop on my playlists. Only music I have never found a fondness for is polka (insert shudder here). ❤❤
Live versions of the Doors are all pretty unique. Jim was a young wild guy. He didn't set out to be a "Rock Star" or a "Legend" he was a film student a poet. An artist who just took the world as it came. He went full bore, head first into everything. He said their shows were ceremonies. Religious experiences between the band and that specific audience. He would read books on crowd psychology and fuck with the crowds depending on his mood and the vibe he would get, often to the chagrin to his band mates. But forever genuine.
This is one thing your generation will probably never experience is that most of our musicians and frontmen and artists relaxed on stage with smoking a cigarette or sippng a glass of whiskey or taking hits of a doobie on stage with the audience of their fans doing the same. We all had a great at a concert and relaxed and had fun and the concert lasted 3 to 4 hours.....the The Doors concert I went to $6.99 and I and my friends were in the 5th middle row. We had a great time!!!
I'll love you taking this journey boy oh boy can't wait for it looking forward to anything you do on this ride. I really hope you enjoy the keyboards / Oregon because this group's got a ton of it
You need to watch an entire concert. The Whiskey song, Horse Latitudes, and Moonlight Drive are just a few of my favorites!!! You are about to go down a wonderful rabbit hole! You should share this music with your girl.
Jim Morrison a sixties poet. I cannot think of a single song that I don't love. He and the Doors were a one of a kind group. Although one could name numerous acts that had similar sounds to each other, there isn't any other like the Doors. Just grab any Doors LP, pick a song at random and play, you'll never be disappointed.
😂😂😁 also my brother, if you’re watching the full version of this song from their Hollywood bowl performance, he does some poetry in the middle right after the instrumental and then finishes the song which he was known to do from time to time excellent lyricist and poet🔥🔥🔥 definitely check out The END from the same performance definition a show closer
Jim Morrison's vocals are amazing! The song you were trying to remember - We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel. That rabbit hole goes deep. Billy has so many great songs and many are quite varied over the evolutions of his career.
When I got my first job at sea Dad asked me to buy him a Duty-Free car stereo to go in his 1939 wooden sailing boat as they were off to South America for 6 months cruising. Mum wanted a flushing loo rather than a bucket. Modified. Anyway I got him a Kawasaki head unit and two speakers, that'll fill a 30ft boat nicely. It had a cassette player along with the radio. I gave him the only cassette I had, The Doors. Man, I must have listened to that for hours, sailing under the Caribbean stars.
The Doors are my favorite all time band!! Ray playing keyboard and bass on the keys also!! Absolutely amazing!! The Doors had no bass player for the most part.
Grand Funk Railroad. Inside Looking Out. 12 plus minutes of 3 bad ass musicians jamming and killing it. Multiple time changes, emotional screaming vocals, and some surprises. Late 60s early 70s. Right up your alley. Keep up the good work. It's like top 40 radio from the 70s and 80s, you never know what kind of music you will play next.
Yes, yes, yes…Please play the live version of this song. I think it’s 1969. Great music, great guitar and bass and really great vocals and the drummers back-up vocals. It’s a must.
The Doors are one of the bands I'd class as musical Marmite - you either love 'em or you don't. I don't but tonight's lineup is still pretty much spot on ⭐️ (edit - Jim Morrison was fucking beautiful though).
I liked some of the Doors songs. This one certainly was a big hit. I remember walking around the Santa Monica Pier in California with this blasting out of the shops. It's still a great memory. ✌️😁❤️👍🔥
I drove with 2 friends from Milan to Paris in a Mini Cooper, a 17 hours mostly night drive, only one cassette: The Doors.....Sometime a million years ago,,,
LA Woman & Break on through are both songs with Jim's voice a bit more aggressive. Both are incredible.
I forgot about Break on Through...banger!

Jim’s voice is a great baritone voice. It can be soft, growls, and everything in between
"WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER" ... Morrison really gets into this one
Ohhhh, and it’s all the more perfect for it
Just remember, this is not what we heard on the radio. When they first came, they were always studio versions. Some artists put out live albums but that was after they had already released several albums.
👍💜💜💜💜Big vote for People Are Strange next🤓
I saw them live in 1968 in Frankfurt Germany. I was 16 and I remember it like it was yesterday
Great selection for today. Especially the mighty Zeppelin.. Best rock band ever 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Doors - Break on Through, Backdoor Man, Moonlight Drive, LA Woman 😎
Their whole first album is amazing, one of the best ever made.
This entire show, specifically this concert, is amazing! "When the musics over", from this concert is fantastic!
I think youd like the Ed Sullivan show whrn they performed this one live.
That's Ray Manzarek (né Manczarek; February 12, 1939 - May 20, 2013) on keyboards. He founded the band with Jim.
So glad to hear your appreciation for the organ. Ray Manzarek was as legendary as Mr. Mojo Risin’
Riders on the Storm, LA Woman and Gloria are my absolute favorite Doors songs!
If you want more Doors' Greatness:
Loved your summaries.

I didn't even mention some of my favorites, like Soul Kitchen, Love Me Two Times, etc. There are just too many Great Doors Song. I thought I'd start with the Crowd Pleasers first.
I had to write The End, since it's the OG. If he likes it, then we can recommend, When the Music's Over, Soft Parade, Shaman's Blues, etc.
A beautiful song of mostly vocals is “the Crystal Ship.” He wrote all the poetry and the music is haunting. Great song.
😂😂😁 also my brother, if you’re watching the full version of this song from their Hollywood bowl performance, he does some poetry in the middle right after the instrumental and then finishes the song which he was known to do from time to time excellent lyricist and poet🔥🔥🔥
Great reaction. So glad you like these guys, I knew you would. Roadhouse blues, peacefrog or LA Woman next please.
SO looking forward to your reaction!!
But forever genuine.
this is a great song! I was born 1975, but have loved this song since I heard it... the organ is sick .... lovely ❤
The " Soft Parade" has incredible vocals you're going to love
This is one thing your generation will probably never experience is that most of our musicians and frontmen and artists relaxed on stage with smoking a cigarette or sippng a glass of whiskey or taking hits of a doobie on stage with the audience of their fans doing the same. We all had a great at a concert and relaxed and had fun and the concert lasted 3 to 4 hours.....the The Doors concert I went to $6.99 and I and my friends were in the 5th middle row. We had a great time!!!
OMG, you lucky guy. OMG. There are no other words.
Check out the studio version "This is the End" by Jim Morrison and The Doors. And also the studio version of "Roadhouse Blues."
I'll love you taking this journey boy oh boy can't wait for it looking forward to anything you do on this ride. I really hope you enjoy the keyboards / Oregon because this group's got a ton of it
Oh and this was guitarist Robby Kriegers masterpiece 🎉
The End is truly amazinG
Five to One and The Changeling will give u what you want!
A all time classic from any era
Music wasn't made to be heard, it's made to be felt!🥰❤😊
100 percent agree. It's all about what and how it makes you feel.
So well said.😊🤗👍👌
Jim Morrison's vocals are amazing! The song you were trying to remember - We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel. That rabbit hole goes deep. Billy has so many great songs and many are quite varied over the evolutions of his career.
Yes! We need more Billy Joel for sure!! 🔥🔥🔥
Jim wails pretty hard in "Five-to-One" from the start, "Roadhouse Blues", too. He wings it out in a bunch of them toward the end.
The Doors are great. Jim Morrison was born in Melbourne, Florida.
L.A. Woman you will love Morrison’s voice in that song!
✌️😁❤️👍🔥
I love when you waffling Mollyboy, it's not boring! ❤️💛🌟🎶 💚 🇸🇪
I drove with 2 friends from Milan to Paris in a Mini Cooper, a 17 hours mostly night drive, only one cassette: The Doors.....Sometime a million years ago,,,
