Fans keeping a ball as a souvenir is a long time tradition in baseball. The ball girls like to give the balls to small children because it creates a good memory that might make the child a life-long fan of the sport. I've been trying to catch one for 63 years with no luck so far.

Marie, at 3:35 the ball girl is helping the outfield "warm up". After each 1/2 inning the teams change, the team in the field goes into bat and the team that just batted goes into the field. The players taking the field warm up their arms / bodies (to prevent muscle strains) by throwing the ball to one another. Since there are three outfielders it helps to have a "fourth", the ball girl.

Actually, a ball girl's/boy's primary job is to chase down foul balls and bring new baseballs to the homeplate umpire between innings.
It's nice when they can keep fans in their area from being hit, by making a great catch but that isn't their primary job as they can only protect a tiny-tiny percentage of fans in attendance. As they can only catch those balls hit at them. The 10s-of thousands of other fans in attendance are on their own.

Some ball girls volunteer. Usually they tip their hat as a "Your Welcome" when they give the ball away. Some of the MLB players will play "catch" with the ball girls. Catch is just pitching and catching the ball to each other. A father may do this with his kids. Sometimes big fans will play catch every time they take a break on a trip for example. Ball girls will often get cheers from the crowd. Having a baseball souvenir is a big deal and sometimes the players will autograph such balls.

Part of the fun of being at a baseball game is that you may get a baseball for yourself. If you look you'll see that several people in the crowds of Spectators have brought baseball gloves to the game. This is in case of ball gets hit up into the stands they may be able to catch it.

They always go through many new baseballs each game, it is to keep the game fair. Part of the contest is for the pitcher to make the ball spin a certain way (or not spin at all) to make the ball move different directions and give the batter a hard time to hit it. Balls that have been damaged by being hit are often removed from the game because it gives the pitcher an unfair advantage. Pitchers will sometimes illegally try to damage or change the ball, and if they are caught doing it they get in trouble: kicked out of that game, or maybe fined.

Line drives have been clocked at close to 120 miles per hour. Those hit down the lines, both foul and fair, usually leave the bat with a powerful spin which causes the ball to curve in the air and take unexpected bounces when it hits the ground. These strange bounces are referred to as bad hops.

Ball girls and ball boys can only retrieve low balls. Balls that go up high, to te upper deck, folks are on their own and sometimes even in the lower deck balls go into the stands. There is usually a rush to catch it. My brother caught a ball once at a Detroit Tiger's game and it was even on the video and played up on the scoreboard. If there is a kid going after it, nice people will let them get it, but there are jerks who argue or take balls away from kids. You are right having a souvenir ball that comes into the stands is a treasure. Sometimes a player will sign the ball for the kid after the end of the game.

In the old days (100 ans) the pitcher could use sandpaper or whatever to scratch up the ball however they liked, but one time a ball was damaged, which caused a bad pitch and killed someone. Since then in the MLB any time a ball has any sign of damage the ball is replaced for a new one.
You can see sometimes if a pitch hits the ground, the catcher will trade balls with the umpire for a new one.
There are probably 50-100 balls used in a weekend, so lots of souvenirs to go around!

It used to be only boys that did this. The purpose isn't a type of training. It's simply that balls that get hit in foul territory need someone to pick them up. So they started having boys on both sides to do that (thankfully now they also allow girls). In some of the stadiums, there's a dangerous place there, for the fans. So the boys and girls sit in that place, to help protect the fans, that might not be paying attention.

In the last year and a half or so, all of the Major League ballparks (stadiums), have added protective netting in front of the seats closest to the field of play. This was a long overdue change. Prior to that, for many, many years, it was the responsibility of the fans to be alert and try to get out of the way of hard hit balls. That was crazy.

They're usually positioned down the foul lines (frequently at a spot where the seats jut out in a corner) to gather up balls hit down the lines, and in the case of some of these hard hit balls, help protect fans who aren't always paying attention. The girls generally have played competitive softball (the fast pitch variety) in high school or college, and many have played in Little League baseball (up to age 12) where they're playing on teams that are mostly boys of the same age. There is some serious talent in that group, and I've seen many spectacular plays like those when I'm at games.

I’m sure someone else here has mentioned that the “ball girls” and “ball boys” are positioned down there to clear all the baseballs off the field and yes, to prevent injuries to fans if possible. Most of the time they are just picking up a foul ball off the ground and later returning it to the the umpires or handing it to a lucky fan. Every now and then one of them will mistakenly catch a fair ball that was hit down the line that they thought was foul. They get embarrassed when that happens.

I went to the 2016 All-Star game in San Diego and I watched a line drive (a ball hit straight into the crowd as opposed to bouncing off of something) hit a man in the face and he started to bleed. It's an understood part of going to a game to watch out as soon as the ball is hit. Lots of fans bring their own gloves from home and many fans hope to go home with a ball hit into the stands.

Marie, when there are ballgirls and or ballboya there is one on the left foul area and one on the right. And they only save or get the ones they can. There is a lot of times the ball does go into the crowd. The girl you saw playing catch with one of the players was while the pitcher was warming up so that the fielder could also warm up. There are also home run balls that people that catch them try to have the player that hit the home run sign the ball and sometimes the home run has a special meaning to the player so he or the team may try to get the ball back for the player because it might be the player's 200th home run or something else. They usually trade with say a signed ball for the home run ball or they may pay for it., Or the person keeps the ball and sells it to collectors.

"What if the ball goes somewhere else?"
The ball girls are there to protect the crowd from foul balls that could possibly hurt someone. That is why the ball girls are always stationed relatively close to the foul poles where a foul ball would be going the fastest and therefore be the hardest to catch and have the highest likelihood of hurting someone. If the foul ball doesn't make it all the way to the ball girl, it's typically either a close foul which will hit the nets that they have to protect the crowd near home plate or its a pop foul which goes high into the air and therefore is far easier for people who aren't trained to catch.

I used to go to the games WITH my own glove. A lot of people are ready and are grabbing for the balls that go into the stands. If there were no ballgirls, the games would go a bit slower because someone would always have to trot over and pick up the ball. Not a biggie, I think it just adds an element of fun to the experience of seeing a live ballgame, and there's nothing better than bringing home a real major-league baseball. But yes, people have been hurt. Sometimes a line drive (a ball hit sharply not in a loop, but on a laser-like path) hits someone in the stands in the head and they have to be hospitalized. So ballparks try to put up netting, but it's really annoying having to look through it to see a game.

For many years teams had a ball girl or ball boy down each foul line and a bat boy. The ball girls and boys were usually young kids and their jobs were to protect the crowd where the fast foul balls are likely to strike and to prevent play from stopping because the ball would tend to go on the field. Over the years it has become mostly young women in the role of ball girl (usually students) and they are often are excellent softball players. There aren't many opportunities for girls to play baseball it's sort of a sport reserved for men for some unknown reason. So girls play soft ball and boys play baseball and the girls learn the same skills but with a larger ball.
The bat boys / bat girls retrieve the bats and bring them back to the dugout after a player bats.
Recently, "ball girls" became considered too sexist of a term so they started calling them "ball attendants" because most of the "girls" are actually young women and calling them ball girls sounded to dismissive and calling them ball women sounded a bit sexual in nature, so now they're ball attendants for the most part.

Check out Zach Hample's channel, world record holder for getting the most balls from attending games... as a kid you would get to the stadium early and bring your glove and catch the batting practice home runs/foul balls or get someone to throw you one from the bullpen(where pitchers warm up)

A long time ago, they’d try to use the same ball throughout the game. It would get beat up (from all the hits) and darkened (from all the dirt and muck that would get on it) during the game. This stopped in 1920. On August 17th of that year, a 29-year old Ray Chapman died after being struck in the head by a dirty ball that was hard to see while batting. After that MLB passed a rule requiring umpires to change out the ball whenever it gets dirty. Now they’ll virtually never use the same ball for more than one play, and frequently use several balls during the same at bat. During a full, 9-inning MLB baseball game, they go through an average of 84-120 baseballs. That’s why you see them so freely giving them away. Any ball hit or thrown in the stands is the property of who ever catches it (or picks it up). This also applies to bats that are occasionally thrown into the stands when it slips out of the hitter’s hands (though for bats the player will often want it back because they’ve prepped it how they like it; they’ll trade the fan a signed ball or un-prepped bat for the bat they through in).
Ray Chapman is the only MLB player ever to die from an injury sustained during a game.

Marie! "All of the ball girls are smiling"...of course they are. Each MLB teams has an active roster of 25 players. Two teams are there for a game. Do the math: 25 athletic young men X 2 groups of said athletic young men = much to smile about! :-)

These young women play women's softball at the college level, a major sport in the US. They are highly trained and skilled athletes. Many try out for just a few positions available. They are not paid but do receive a glove (mitt), uniform, headgear, and shoes.

Hi Marie. Not all teams use girls for the job. Some have boys. Most of the girls are softball players at school and do this for the summer. While waiting for the next inning to start the players play catch to stay loose. Since there are three outfielders, while 2 of them catch with each other the third will often play catch with a ball boy or girl. As far as fans getting hurt, that has happened. In the last couple years though all the major league stadiums have put up netting down both sides to protect the fans closer to the batter, but the ball boys/girls do save a lot of people from getting hurt. Wear that Yankees hat proudly!! I have a different kind of video to suggest today. I will include a link. It is about the boat owners and ferry captains who rescued so many people who were stranded on 9/11 with no way off Manhattan Island. It is very inspiring and shows what people can accomplish with a little will to do good. Hope you enjoy. Stay safe and well. ruclips.net/video/18lsxFcDrjo/видео.html

Like all sporting events, baseball is very social for the spectator. Because of the slower pace of the game, people are often distracted. Whether that is eating, or in discussions with fellow fans, or maybe people watching, there are times that you are not paying attention to the game. I remember as a young man, my friend and I would bring our binoculars, and point out to each other where we found attractive women in different sections of the stadium. I can't say that I have ever been hit by a ball in the stands, just by other spectator lunging for foul balls. They are so focused on "catching the ball" that they are oblivious to those around them. People have landed in my lap, and my beer has gone everywhere, but it is all part of the game. I hope that when all is well again in this world, you may come to America to enjoy a game soon.

Lots of girls play baseball (and softball) growing up. Softball is a varsity sport in high school, and a scholarship sport in college. You need to watch a college softball game sometime.
The ball attendants keep fans safe, but also keep these balls off the field, which would delay the game.

Those ball girls either played Little League Baseball or softball and are good at it since they have to try out for that job. Yes you can get hit by a ball or a bat if you don't pay attention! I hope you do more baseball reactions and learn to love the game 🙏👍 and you go ahead and wear whatever you want, don't worry about the haters 👍 몸 조심해 💕

in baseball, any ball that is hit into the stands can be kept by a fan. Actually, the purpose of a ball girl is to pickup foul balls, this actually is unfair they should let the fans catch the balls. there are entire videos on fans catching the ball. there are two ball girls one for the left foul territory and one for the right, and they use tons of balls per game and remember there are over 2400 games played per season.also if the ball has any type of mark or scuff on it the homeplate ump will throw it out of the game.

    • @Dhalin

They don't want to just let fans catch the ball, because line-drives mashed into the stands can hurt people. They can't have any guarantee that the fans are paying attention and not looking down at their phone, or eating, or are half-drunk. You can't just assume fans will catch the balls with a glove (not all fans bring gloves?) instead of, say, their face. Since many foul balls that are line-driven end up in that general area, that's where they put the ball boys/ball girls. Any further back that foul territory, and the fence gets higher and higher and it's less likely that a ball is going to be line-driven there, and will more than likely have an arc instead, and the seats between the ball boy/ball girl and home plate very rarely ever sees balls hit there. It's just that zone where the ball boy/ball girl is sitting that's the "red zone" of danger. Why they don't have a net to catch such balls there is beyond me. I think after that one game where a toddler got sent to the hospital after getting nailed with a ball, I think they were talks about more netting and safety equipment for the fans. This video seems to be before that happened.

The surface at the edge of the outfield is softer and you can almost bounce off it like a trampoline , that's how the young lady was able to climb the outfield wall. I had to cross the outfield in Baltimore many times during a job I used to do .

Most of the ballgirls or boys are players in youth leagues. What makes some of catches so impressive is that most of the time that ball is coming off the bat at 100+ mph. They really have to know what they're doing so they don't get hurt. Their job is to protect the crowd in spots where the team knows about of hard hit foul balls go. In some parks like Tampa Bay and Oakland that have open bullpins in foul ground where pitchers warm up. They are there to protect the pitchers and catchers from foul balls as well as the crowd.
