Hey there Big Strappers. So glad you dropped by to watch today's video. Have you ever been handed a similar solution from your carrier where it was something THEY would never do, but expected YOU to do? Love to hear from you!

It's beyond me that a driver has to ask a company how they are supposed to keep warm. That's what the truck is for. And the first time they told me I had to sleep in the driver's lounge to keep warm, someone else would have to come get that truck because I would be on my way back home.

How to bypass idle shutdown with mega carriers: they all have temp settings to override the shutdown: under a particular temp and over a particular temp. Under the driver side mirror, there is a small black plastic temp probe that tells the truck the temp. I used a heating pad to keep the temp above 105 F and it never shut down. I ran the cord for the heating pad through the door (just closed the door on it) and the rubber weather strip was the only thing touching the cord and did no damage.

Leave the trailer brakes on parking brakes off. The truck will idle all night in neutral. If you're freezing and mega won't give you heat. Maybe chock the wheels.

I started driving company trucks in the early 70's, a conventional with a 36" bunk that you crawled through the rear window for access or a cab over, none of the nice stuff you have on the new trucks. When I bought my own in the early '90s I installed an electrically operated fuel heater just before the engine and a large mattress sized heating pad to sleep on with a sleeping bag over the blankets on really cold nights. I didn't idle my engine, wasted fuel and wear on my engine wouldn't help me make money. I would turn the heating pad on 20 minutes before laying down and sleep warm in a quiet and not vibrating truck. In the morning just turn the key to accessory and get back in bed for 10 minutes, then start the engine, it starts quick with warm fuel even at 10 degrees outside. Did that for 7 years and didn't feel that I suffered.

That's absurd. No driver should have to sleep in a chair to stay warm. Most truck stops don't even have a driver's lounge. I thought the purpose of the eld was to make sure the drivers are rested before driving. How can you legitimately rest for 10 hours in a chair?

I remember it was 120 degrees in Phoenix at night. Heat actually overwhelmed my APU's air conditioning capabilities. Was 90 degrees in the cab. Walked into the truck stop and laid a sleeping bag down in the drivers lounge so I could sleep. There were three or four other drivers with the same idea. I remember I could feel the heat from the asphalt through my sandals that night.

Such as crude oil, fuel, cattle, grain , powder cement, gravel, wells in the oilfields. NO GATES, to wait upon; NO WAITING a whole weekend, in some place 300 miles from home, for a load.......WORK FOR a company, where waiting is NOT INVOLVED, too much. Gravel, was really good. You want a few company rigs to be rammed into your corporate buildings and owners houses? Because this is how you do it , stuff like this is a matter of life and death and even in the military we wouldn't accept this unless the war is going that bad. If the company won't meet basic humanitarian NEEDS then they should be sued for ENDANGERMENT because that's what it is plan and simple, yes you can run trucks without APUs and A/C's and Bunk heaters but you damn well better keep those trucks is a very bearable climate that all you need is the windows down and the Temps never drop below 65. People WILL die if they can't stay warm in the winter.

When I was a rookie I had a truck that didn’t have a bunk heater that work so the only way to get heat was when the truck was running so what I would do is I would crank the heat up really high for like 15 minutes before I went to sleep when the truck is on idle it’ll tell you it’s about to shut off and then you just tap the gas pedal and then it keeps going so you do that a few times and get it real hot inside the truck and then you can go to sleep and then usually you’re good for a few hours and then you wake up freezing your nuts off and you do the same thing again start the truck and let it run for a little bit you knowBasically you got a wake up for like 15 minutes in the middle of the night to get warm inside the truck again bye I was doing over the road so I didn’t really have too many super cold night because I was down south sometimes and just moving around but there were nights where it was really cold and then I ended up getting a job somewhere else and then now I have a bunk heater in my truck which is pretty nice nice

I was with Can Am West a few seasons ago. Before they packed it in. They hired me to drive a brand new short nose Pete with a tridem trailer, out of Abbotsford BC. The way they Spec’d for max net wt. and control costs was to block 1 one fuel tank. Micro management eh I’ve been 30 yrs OTR then and said what idiot did this? To the orientation guy. He said the guy behind you. I turned and laughed. No way full load lumber is making it back from Grande Prairie Alberta to Kamloops BC on winter fuel on a single 120 fuel tank in the winter pushing snow, locked up, with chains on! We could only splash 300 litres at the flying J. Grande Prairie it was volume restricted fuel stop to limp us to Kamloops BC Chevron or cfl in Barrier BC. lt Did not top the tank from our approved Alberta allowed fuel supplier. Chevron was the BC fuel stop. (Everyone of us were on fumes that fall on summer fuel by the time we made Kamloops Chevron at the top of the hill by the scales). He said well we have people that say it can be done. I said brand new rigs barley getting 5 mpg, never! Remember we were not full after the splash in GP. I had to buy fuel in Blue River to extend to their fuel location in Kamloops .. I was first out of the Canfor mill mid blizzard. Other guys slept the night. Never saw another vehicle till Grande Cashe AB. Not even a plow. Full chains and locked almost all the way to Grande Cashe AB. They refused to pay me back. So I called the cops in the dispatch office and reported theft. Manager came out of his office when he heard what I was doing. I got paid! I was the first to hit a storm but not the last that couldn’t make it. Including the driver orientation guy! Big idiot companies crunching numbers not caring about the most important part of trucking. The Drivers!

How can a new driver ask the right questions when they have no clue as to what it's like to be driving long haul? 99% of new drivers quickly become disillusioned once they hit the road. It takes a special kind of person to live a trucker's life. There's a lot more to it than just getting in the truck and driving.

Most of the larger trucking companies that track driver fuel economy. And especially those that apply a bonus to maintaining a certain level of MPG. Argue against idling the truck for sleeping. In Winter, a Driver can keep warm using one of the 12v bunk warmer heating pads. Of course this assumes the truck electrical system is able to handle the power draw and still be able to start the truck the next day. It can depend a good deal on the specific dispatcher. But yes, there are those who will recommend using a truck stop drivers lounge. Some going so far as to 'Suggest' using a drivers theater if the truck stop has one. A room where drivers can rent to watch or just watch whatever is randomly chosen to be played. Reasoning being that the lights in such rooms are kept low.
In summer months of course, you're pretty much hosed.
Most trucks having an automated shut off or anti-idle system had ways of bypassing or negating them.
Such as, setting the brakes on the trailer but leaving the truck brakes released.
With the rise in fuel costs it's possible the old Idle Air system or something similar will make a comeback.

Next morning, freezing, I had to lie to company saying I was having issues with truck and was going to their terminal in Birmingham Al. I was north of there and lived in between so I drove to jasper Al, my home and called them to tell them I quit. Otherwise they wouldn't have allowed me to get home. Delivered the truck to terminal next day. Furthermore, I was on a c pap machine and needed truck on to generate power to my machine and they still refused. When I started at western express my orientation was over on a Friday. But I had to wait till Monday to get paperwork from their doctor for my c pap. They wouldn't dispatch me. Put me back in my motel room with no money, no food, nothing from Friday afternoon until Monday night by the time they got all documents verified and me certified. Only food I had was motels continental breakfast in the morning. This company needs to be completely shutdown and people who run it prosecuted for the treatment of their potential drivers.

It also “will not idle “. It has an automatic shut down. Well, this is how I got around it! And I’m certain that for the driver with western Xpress, or any other company, that has this “feature “, that this little trick will work. When I stop for a delivery, and bump the dock, I set the trailer break, but not the tractor break. The computer will not shut down the engine With the yellow knob pushed in! Of course, remember that I work for the Korean mafia, and this is just something that they do not pay attention to at all. Western express may go up at the number of hours of Idletyme

He asked me when he first called about idling , well if you're hot or cold I'd idle but we have APU's. Lotta mega haulers will turn a guy away from driving with their horse hockey.

I'm not a trucker. But years ago I had the dumbest piece of human waste as a foreman. I had been working about 2 hours away from home late into the morning and I had to be back at the place that same morning. I told him in advance there is no way I'm driving home just to turn around and drive back. He told me to sleep in the company van. It wasn't freezing but it was close enough. He said he used to sleep in the van when he was a technician. Yeah when his ex kicked him out of the house. There was a hotel that shared the same parking lot. Gave the company amex card to the clerk, got a room, and rested for a few hours. I found that a couple of hours rest and a shower are enough to keep me going. I did the expense report and never heard a word from him.

Crete gives you "fuel solutions". To me they're are a waste of time. When you get to certain truckstops you have to wait 10-15 mins cause everybody wants to save .004 cents a gallon!

Stop hating on Western Express! These are the good days. Their future plans are to recommend (enforce) that in winter drivers stuff their clothes with old newspapers and either sleep in the seat or, if that's not possible due to all the rustling noises when trying to get comfortable, under the cab on the ground (drivers have to buy their own tarp). As far as dealing with scorching heatstroke summer temps, you'll be happy to know that WE is collaborating with some other mega carriers in a study run by a renowned veterinary college, to see if new drivers can be taught to pant like dogs. Apparently the early results are promising - major fuel savings and a death rate for drivers far less than the actuarial tables at first suggested. Yes, young strappers, the golden age of trucking is just around the corner.
