Eric is a unique musician. He is known to be a perfectionist but anybody with sharp enough ear can listen hear and realize that perfection paid off, because this album (and his others) shine with musical brillance.. One of my favorite rock guitarists. He is (in my opinion) one of the most musical players, love his style, His music is so good, that it never gets old, it is a sonic treat everytime I listen to it.
*I know one of the engineers that worked on Ah Music Viacom. Told me about some conversations he had with Johnson while they were mixing it at the Sound Castle. Not very happy ones either lol.*
Such a talented man. Ive been listening to Eric Johnson since I was a kid - My dad loved him and would play his songs on the guitar for my brothers and I all the time - My dad has since passed away and EJ's songs are so emotional for me now as an adult because they remind me of being young and happy. This song especially, with the guitar parts, its perfect.
Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing Bethany. Happy for you that your Dad shared a bond with you and you appreciate the music of Eric Johnson. Truly talented musician. I've seen EJ numerous times live in Austin and Houston and he never fails to disappoint.
Amazing how well he pulls his killer selection of songs off live...perfection. Everyone is so entranced with his playing that they forget to light their drugs up...so awesome is this guy in concert. My late brother, who I treated to one of his concerts said, "is there a fret he doesn't use...and I laughed....lol, I said, I told you that you wouldn't be disappointed....RIP Brother.....if it wasn't for you I would never love so many different styles of music...am in tears now...damnit....
The delicate timbres he produces with clean tones on this song are pure, unadulterated ear candy. Never tire of his stuff. And echoing other comments, this made have been his apex of that particular thing he was going for. Perfectionist? Yeah, and thank goodness!!
Don't know why but i can't stop listening to those chords he plays from 2:40 - 2:54 under the lead guitar, try to block out the lead and just listen to that chordal melody, unreal :D
Always wished he would play this live... he exercises restraint for the first 4 1/2 minutes with most of his focus on clean and tasteful chord melodies, then 4:43 is like a cheetah being let out of a cage
LOL Good analogy Rogue vfx. His soloing on this tune is over the top. I've seen EJ many times since the early 80s and he never disappoints live. I do wish he would play this live also.
I did not say it was the only aspect one must take into account, however you must not underestimate the power that love for music has in some personalities.
Hello, my name is Paul and i write music and have some of my stuff uploaded on youtube. My influence on guitar has always been Eric Johnson. Just thought i'd share some of my music. There is no fancy leads like Eric but just pretty clean guitar. I recorded it all on my Roland Juno Gi. Type in Paul Horn. I'm bad with song names so i just thought of "Passion". Hope ya enjoy!!
@pashton45 I would agree, only that some seem to turn out as 18 karats and some 24 karats. This is a great example of the latter. I'd love to learn the solo for this song.
So many great parts in this song but how about the line at 6:45 - 6:49. It takes me to the top of a mountain and a few bars later I come tumbling down.
yes i agree it is very demanding that you cant even get it perfectly. The interlude Riff A in the Venus Isle transcription book is a great exercise for any electric guitarist. hehe. Eric Johnson is one badass guitar player and singer as well!
Okay! What is he doing in interlude riff A? Is it tabbed correctly in the Venus Isle book? Sounds like he's playing hybrid picking open and fretted notes.. not what's tabbed out in the book. Anyone?
@@peterdaldry8646 I do not have the book but when i tried playing it by ear, The most convenient way for me to play it is to pick the 4th string then followed by finger picking the second string then hammer on for the next note. is 2:07 the section you meant by interlude?
@@jinooot It's the first fast section. It sounds like he's sweep picking and hammering on and pulling off! I believe it's called interlude A in the tab book. Reading the tab there are no hammering or pull offs.. we'll maybe at the end of the phrase.. a slide and pull off. The way it's tabbed, they have you picking every note.. at that speed it seems impossible! Maybe it's the tone and effect he's using. Is it just me who's having problems nailing this haha 😄 gies a break Eric!
I consider Eric better as well, and I do not know Joe personally nor even have I heard interviews about him, etc., so I cannot question you about his attitude towards success, but Satriani would have liked this video, which is what I wanted to say in the first place.
I had no idea about it, however leaving aside the ego, the commercial objective Striani pursued and perhaps jealousy (though I doubt he was jealous) don't you think that anyone who has musical skill, knowledge and musical understanding like Joe would consider this one an aweasome piece of music?
Although you are bringing forth a very solid argument, I can't completey agree with you; although it may sound naïve, I consider the musical aspect (love to music) to be really decisive in this matter.
It's a pleasure to discuss music industry (and its musically unrelated components) with someone with an IQ above average, and never reaching a definite true conclusion, that's what debate is all about, am I wrong?
I was not being sarcastic, perhaps you misunderstood me. That is one possible conclusion; the one you try to convince me about is that Joe is not fond of Eric and that he has a totally different understanding of musical success and he would not like this song because of personal issues.

Ditto!! His elaborate technique is a treat to my ears whenever.
I agree brotha
His pick technique is incredible. Cannot believe he plays that fast with "the bounce"
*I know one of the engineers that worked on Ah Music Viacom. Told me about some conversations he had with Johnson while they were mixing it at the Sound Castle. Not very happy ones either lol.*
This is the one EJ album you have to listen to start to finish. It's just that special.
So true.
It’s an incredible Album from start to finish
So is Ah Via Musicon and Tones. You can tell he is very spiritual and emotional. His music touches your soul and it makes you feel at peace.
The solo that starts in 4:45... In that point, Eric quit playing guitar. He's talking with God. A big hug from Brazil!
the LONG outro solo on this song is my most favorite EJ lead ever!
Such a talented man. He didn't pass away! He is still alive and well.
He's still touring!
This album has been one of my favorites be for quite a while now. I never get tired of listening to it. Your father is still with you.

I'm talking about my dad not Eric Johnson! :-/
Still sounds great. I was blasting that CD back then every night but have needed a new player since 2011. I'll get it soon
It's amazing how eric always finds the most beautiful perfect notes to play.
Amazing how well he pulls his killer selection of songs off live...perfection. Everyone is so entranced with his playing that they forget to light their drugs up...so awesome is this guy in concert. 1 person does not know all about music.. This song is amazing and has a very touching melody.
Probably my favorite EJ song ever.
This song has never failed to renew my faith in myself and lift me up. Plus, the guitar is just gob smacking.
This song should be included on the set list of every Eric Johnson live performance.as an encore or opening song...period.
The guitar sound at 1:05 is one of my favorites. A great song of love and hope.
His solos on this track sound violin-like. Incredible. Even having seen him so many times live living in Austin, he still amazes.
The delicate timbres he produces with clean tones on this song are pure, unadulterated ear candy. Never tire of his stuff. And echoing other comments, this made have been his apex of that particular thing he was going for. Perfectionist? Yeah, and thank goodness!!
This is one of most thought out and melodic solos... exquisite!
This is fantastic. His voice sounds like heaven.
5:20 - 5:24 fucking floating shards of shred.. what..
Don't know why but i can't stop listening to those chords he plays from 2:40 - 2:54 under the lead guitar, try to block out the lead and just listen to that chordal melody, unreal :D
I feel that everything EJ touches is perfection
Eric’s tone is great! Met him once at a small music store in Missouri, nice guy as well!
the first account on you tube with 0 dislikes in all eric johnson tracks!!!
this man is a god!!!!
Always wished he would play this live... he exercises restraint for the first 4 1/2 minutes with most of his focus on clean and tasteful chord melodies, then 4:43 is like a cheetah being let out of a cage

I love this entire album! Eric definitely writes music that speaks to the soul
Great music from start to end! Looking forward seeing Eric for the third time soon!
6:53 to 6:57 really love that line
bought this when it came out. stumbled across it on my music library and transported me. currently learning this amazing guitar solo .
I did not say it was the only aspect one must take into account, however you must not underestimate the power that love for music has in some personalities.
Guitarist Masterclass !!!
eric is king midas, everything he' does' just turns to gold beautiful music !:)

So good bass as well
Uplifting😃😊💫💙Cool album artwork!😘
WHAT A WONDERFUL MUSIC & GUITAR SKILL BRAVO!
I've had a white Gibson SG since 1992 and have needed guitar picks for some time.
Love this song!!!!!!!!
masterpiece.
Eric is so amazing even Steve Morse made a song in the "essence of" Eric Johnson.
Super awesome song!
This is so beautiful! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!

Essa voz é perfeita😍
Álbum perfeito e essa capa divina 😘💋💋💋💋
EXCELLENT
That devine solo of his starts at 4:44 and goes on right until the end.
My fav song
Luv it so much!! Steammmm!!! :D
The verse really reminds me of 80s era Genesis

Live version on A.C.L. is great, too!
Eric is not god, but the Lord has laid a finger on his brow.
So many great parts in this song but how about the line at 6:45 - 6:49. It takes me to the top of a mountain and a few bars later I come tumbling down.
the solo in the end reminds me Beethoven...
Ironic how much of a perfectionist Eric is with tone and the production is weirdly like a demo.
WOW
I know it's not "P.C. Correct" to be proud of our American Icon's that have given so much to us all, but I am.
Mary Ann Maple Don't be silly. I'm proud for you too and I'm Scottish.
very very very very very difficult to cover..
yes i agree it is very demanding that you cant even get it perfectly. The interlude Riff A in the Venus Isle transcription book is a great exercise for any electric guitarist. hehe. Eric Johnson is one badass guitar player and singer as well!
Nobody sounds like Eric.

Eric Johnson is not God, God wishes he could be this good
I was flying... I just landed at the end
oh yeeeahh :)
Is there any live version out there? Can't find one.
i wanna be like him!!

delayed response but thanks a lot man! appreciate it
I was actually making reference to the economical aspects of music industry, which is (or should not) be related to music itself.
Im pretty new to ej. Can anyone tell me all of his albums and what year they came out? Id really appreciate it thanks
Check out ah via musicom
genial!
does anybody know, what the lyrics are about?
His father who was going through a rough patch at the time of this songs lyric writing
Although you are bringing forth a very solid argument, I can't completey agree with you; although it may sound naïve, I consider the musical aspect (love to music) to be really decisive in this matter.
Satriani would have definately liked this song
Que clase de droga es esta
It's a pleasure to discuss music industry (and its musically unrelated components) with someone with an IQ above average, and never reaching a definite true conclusion, that's what debate is all about, am I wrong?
Eric Johnson is a tribute to Jimi Hendrix !
this is about sue ! are you listening? listen to the lyrics x

Clapton, page and Townsend should put their guitars away. Johnson is in his own universe
He sounds like John Waite, almost the same vocal style.
