The Gordie Howe Bridge Saga: An Update

  • What's going on at the Gordie Howe Bridge?
As icy winds sweep across the Detroit River, the Gordie Howe International Bridge stands tall, a testament to international cooperation and engineering excellence. The frozen river below, marked by freighter trails, creates a breathtaking winter panorama.
Welcome to another WinAir Update on this marvel nearing its September 2025 completion, with the first vehicle expected to cross in fall of this year. At 0.53 miles, it will be North America's longest cable-stayed bridge, set to revolutionize regional transportation and trade.
As we fly over the bridge in January 2025 we visit the project in its final stages. It is a cold Sunday, but on a weekday, we'd see crews busy installing various systems such as:
    • Aesthetic, roadway, pedestrian, and navigation lighting
    • A weather station and bridge monitoring system
    • Fire alarms and an intelligent transportation system
    • A fire suppression system with hydrants and actuated valves
Okay, so what else is going on at the Gordie Howe bridge
I'd say quite a bit. The expansion joint is being built on site and closer to being installed to complete the bridge and road decks. It seems to be taking a long time to complete, however, the modular expansion joints being installed are sophisticated components that require careful installation. The process can take approximately four to six weeks and involves multiple steps.
Ongoing work also includes drainage outlets, stormwater management ponds, landscaping, and paving around the ports of entry. I'm sure some of this work will wait on warmer weather.
An interesting addition is the Peregrine Falcon nesting box, yet to be installed as of January 28, 2025. Located below the bridge deck with a remote-operated camera, it's part of broader conservation efforts.
Other initiatives include new prairie and pollinator habitats, and the relocation of at-risk plants and seeds from the project area.
There is a lot going on to get this bridge built. It's cool to watch happen.
The Gordie Howe Bridge will prove to be a blessing between Detroit and Windsor. It will reduce congestion on city streets bypassing downtown Windsor to eliminate bottlenecks and delays. The direct link between Interstate 75 in Detroit and Highway 401 in Windsor will save time and money and frustration for truckers and travellers.
Despite the cold, the project remains on schedule for a September 2025 completion. Join the journey as we capture the final touches leading to the grand opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge. It can't be too soon!
Don't forget to like and subscribe for more updates. This is Bob Jones, and I will see you in the next video.

For those from Michigan who are wondering why this bridge is considered to be the longest Cable Stay bridge in North America since the Might Mac is 5 miles long and is also a suspension bridge, here's the difference. The Gordie Howe Bridge has all the cables directly connected to the towers, while the Might Mac has two major cables from anchor point to anchor point and they hold the suspension cables that hold up the roadway.

Hi Michael. Lol. Yeah, flower pots. Part of the beautification for the newly rebuilt Sandwich Street the bridge paid for. It really needed to be done and makes quite a difference to the west end. The Windsor River does sound good. However we may have to change it only to the middle point where the border is. "Let's go fishing in the Windsor River. If they aren't biting we can cast into the Detroit River and try our luck there." Chuckle:)

Bob @0:26 that is a Great Photo.
With all the flyover's You have done, have You tried to put a scrapbook or Calendar together?
You could use all Four Seasons of the same year for that phase of the bridge, to show the progress and milestones.
If You start from the beginning (final approval of the design of The Howe Bridge), and release a calendar every year, you could have a minimum of ten years' worth of documentation.
A starting point could be "The story of Gordie Howe Bridge 2017" all the way through 2027.

We always have to remember that in reality we live in a world that only God could create and paying attention to sustaining to smallest particle of life is important. Events this weekend put a damper on the new bridge. Ike Eisenhower promised Canada that the USA would always look after us, he must be rolling in his grave. Betrayal by someone who has never proven why he should be supported puts a damper on everything. John Kennedy said we should not ask what our country should do for us, but rather what we can do for our country. What has the president done, beg for greatness?

A new broom sweeps clean, as we're seeing with Trump. Where we differ my friend is Canada will never be the 51st State. I like most Canadians am proud of my heritage and country. We'll put out the garbage when the opportunity comes. Canada will survive. It is the Liberals that are toast.
Trump is a skilled master of negotiation and a keen strategist. I'm blown away with his tactics. He's manipulating the world as it has never seen before, that I know of anyway. Hats off to him for getting our lame government to address the drug and border issues. Should have been done years ago.
Canada is strong proud country. The election coming will see the regeneration of Canada's International respect. Refineries will be built, pipelines will be completed to keep jobs and profits in Canada. We'll get market price for our finished resources on the world market. Lesson learned to become more self sufficient and less dependant on our American friends. Even good neighbours have differances. We will work it out.

Lol. Better be careful. Canadians are nice people, until they get pissed off. Thing is both Canadians and Americans lose big time with these foolish tariffs. Well the middle and lower classes will. The guys pulling the strings will likely get richer from your paycheck. Get ready for the gut punch. Canada First! :)
