Enhanced/enriched products are used to help combat certain health conditions. Such as cereal which is enhanced with iron and vitamin D. These happen to be issues where i live so acquiring what i need in just 1 spot is helpful. This is especially useful for those who happen to struggle to eat. Also it being enriched doesn't mean they have stripped its nutrients
@@maniacqueenie4578 I was coming here to say something similar. My only thing to add is that for most enriched wheat products, they’re usually adding folic acid that is lost during processing step.
The way they process the ingredients says a lot about the quality of the product. When vitamins are depleted through that process, those that use it can become ill because of the depletion. They have to be replaced by law. The vitamins added are not natural, they are artificial. The more unprocessed foods we take in the less we suffer from disease. We have no boxed foods in our home. We eat fresh foods that are not processed. If it has to have a nutrition label, it's not as healthy as fresh, whole food.
@@Bippityboppityboo416I've noticed something similar as well, the more processed food we eat the worse we feel overall and in some cases can cause flare-ups of conditions. We didn't understand what was doing it until we started eating more healthy and quickly realized the more unprocessed foods we ate, as opposed to processed or heavily processed, the better we felt and flare-ups stopped. I don't trust a lot of the processing, there is so much added in a lot of cases that it can't be healthy. Just pasta alone is wild, the ingredient list on processed dried pasta is off the charts.
Enriched foods are foods that add essential nutrients or vitamins. They help people meet their daily nutrition requirements. For people who can't afford to buy vegetables and meat, having packaged food that's enriched can help them stay healthy. Iron and folic acid are essential for good health, and not developing anemia and thiamin mononitrate is vitamin B1. I'm not saying that there isn't bad stuff put into food sometimes, but some stuff genuinely makes food healthier. And these vitamins don't affect the calories in the food, which means they don't make you fatter.
Why can't people afford food, a basic necessity? While I agree with your point, white flour has been enriched in an unnatural way because the vitamins in whole wheat got removed while making it white,
Also that stuff is just the artificial version of the actual nutrients we need. Folic acid for example, is the synthetic version of Folate. Which may not be bad for some, but there's a lot of people who's body literally can't break it down which causes even more issues for the body. This enriched stuff may sound good but I really don't think it's that good. Also a bag of frozenmixed veggies can be found for about a dollar and that had more vitamins than whatever they are trying to put in the maccaroni.
Miss pam did you know that you are blessing me today 😊 I'm a 60yr black dude and is somewhat ashamed to say I've never made macaroni and cheese but for the last month I've been looking at videos on how to make the best mac& cheese 🧀 so now with your healthy advice i will make even better mac and cheeseand without feeling guilty about the unhealthy stuff. Hey Kenny, I hope you made your Mac and cheese and it was delicious! I know sometimes for me it can take a few tries to perfect my recipe to my liking but that’s the fun of it! Either way hope you enjoyed and props to you too for making something you never made before! I think that’s cool and I’m going to take your example and tomorrow I’m going to make a Japanese as stir fry called yaki soba, I saw it today on a video and it looks delicious and easy! Not something I ever had all the way over here in Ireland. Wishing you well 😊
Reading nutrition labels is very important! However just because it’s enriched doesn’t mean it is bad for you- things like folate and riboflavin are sometimes added to foods so we get enough of those vitamins in our daily diet and they are actually beneficial! I think I would personally go for the enriched option here just to get some more vitamins and minerals than the straight flour option. But I totally agree that looking at the label and trying to limit additives when they aren’t nutritional is super important
I agree with the ingredients issue. Except the organic is twice the price, not 10 cents more. The regular pasta for $1.89 was the 32 oz box. The 16 oz is 99 cents vs $1.99 organic.
That's interesting. Both boxes were 16 oz. but she showed the 32 oz. price for the enriched product. I hope that wasn't done on purpose. That's how you lose trust and damage your reputation.
@@jonathandpg6115 I just checked it again. If you only compare the price tags, the enriched product is 32 oz. And the organic is 16 oz. Also, the organic price tag was for penne pasta, not macaroni.
Folic acid, niacin, etc. are vitamins. Those are healthy additives. Watch out for hidden sugars and use portion control. When it comes to pasta, we eat half portions and still get full.
@@HonkeySwine you definitely understood what OP meant, but decided to be purposely obtuse. ULTRA-processed is no good for your health, there's no buts.
@@schy9614 they're right though. "Processed" is a generic term that can mean anything. If you take something healthy like tomatoes and puree it, it becomes processed. We should use more precise language when we're talking about that kind of thing, because "processed" alone can mean literally anything you do to food. Otherwise, we're just using "processed" to mean "anything that isn't good for you" and it's not a good habit to be in when we're talking about dietary health.
@HonkeySwine Everything is processed to a certain degree. Go for the lesser degree. Hope this helps you out. You seemed to have missed the core meaning of the message. Have a great day. And wash your produce!

Ms Pam I always say soul food be taking souls all that fat and it make people gain weight ,when we get older it's a must we eat healthy and eat more of our greens
@@prayingmotherthat’s rather dark to say and bias. Being sedentary is worst. It can be any preparation of food, if you’re not moving, your cardiovascular system, muscles, and body in general suffers. Actually a plate of Soul-food has more color than many give credit - sure less frying is a bonus but it has lots of veggies: some sort of 2 greens (collards, turnips, cabbage etc), potatoes (white and sweet - cubed, mashed or baked), okra, stewed tomatoes, green tomatoes, cole slaw, cob corn, green beans, snap peas, carrots (glazed or steamed) - lol I could go on, the goal is to have color on the plate and Soul-food is one of those that do. I agree many need to tweak the preparation to make it healthier but if they’re not moving - the results are the same no matter the food.
they enrich typically with vitamins and mineral, cause people don't get enough by eating simple carbs, like pasta. they even add calcium to oj and cereal now. enriched doesn't mean its preservatives, as that is what's unhealthy. but junk food is ultimately what makes everyone fat, or eating too many calories. foods high in preservatives are also problematic.
I'm so frustrated by this misinformation in this video. That box shows iron, niacin, B1, B2, and folic acid (another B vitamin). None of these should be causing weight gain. The fact that it's a box of carbs is what MIGHT cause weight gain, in some people.
She didn't say that vitamins aren't good for you. What she did say is they stripped them of their natural nutrients and then added in (enriched) synthetic ones. I'd rather get nutrients naturally from my food as opposed to synthetic additions.
@@byhisgrace2853 It's the same vitamins. Iron is literally the same iron we dig out of the ground. The reason it's found in some plants is because they absorb it better from soils than others. But you're getting the same iron whether it's from spinach, a vitamin pill/supplement, pasta, or if you licked a metal pole.
I think you may be a bit confused between the terms enriched and ultra processed Pam. The first package was enriched with vitamins which benefit health. Its a well known fact that a considerable proportion of the US population are suffering from malnutrition and this has increasedin recent decades due to a number of factors, affordability and availability of nutritious products and poor food choices being the two main factors. Enriching popular foods with supplementary vitamins and protein helps to address this issue. Steer clear of diet labelled products too, these are the worst offenders and cause more health issues than they claim to prevent.
That’s the entire problem though. No one should need to rely on fortified ultra processed garbage. Whole foods are EXTREMELY cheap! There really are no excuses. Gluttony is rampant in the West though. If people truly lived on meat, whole grains, fruit and vegetables they would be saving tons money and saving their bodies along the way. But no one wants to eat like that anymore because we are addicted to this fortified ultra processed crap that gives our bodies instant blood sugar gratification.
The fact that they enriched it means it is ultra processed. Whatever “vitamins” they enrich it with pale in comparison to the (natural) vitamins found in whole foods. It’s a cheaper, dangerous way to make people think they are getting the nutrients they need.
Thank you! I was thinking the same. Those items were much needed vitamins and minerals. Ultra Processed and Processed foods are what people need to stay away from! Although, I do agree that choosing Organic foods is much better. 🚫added Hormones 🚫added antibiotics 🚫High Fructose Corn Syrup, added dyes, and preservatives. 👍🏼Whole Foods
@@Bopzibeel I was thinking the same. AND what could be making us fat would be the cream and cheese added to make the macaroni and cheese! I have to watch my carbs and sugars- you wouldn’t believe how much is added to everything. That will cause more health problems than enriched pasta which adds b vitamins and iron and other minerals!🤦🏻♀️
Enhanced doesn't always mean bad. For example, in Canada, milk is enhanced with vitamin D because we don't get enough. Salt is enhanced with iodine so we don't get goiters. (I don't know if water with fluoride is the same thing.)
Fluoride makes your teeth stronger. When put in at the safe levels it has some serious benefits. I grew up on well water and wouldn’t you know, I had tons of cavities. When I started drinking city water with fluoride, I stopped getting cavities. However, there is also evidence that (as with many things) too much of it is toxic. It is also possible (though not known and based on this being true for many compounds) that chronic low level exposure to it may have some small negative effects. Do what you will with this information.
Exactly what I came to say! All of those "ingredients"she read were actually beneficial vitamins! Overeating is the biggest reason for weight gain, next to not eating a well balanced diet! This is why a lot of pastas are fortified with important vitamins people are not otherwise getting because of their carb heavy diets!
The reason producrs were enriched in the past was due to malnutrition during the depression. They would add iron fillings to things because a lot of people couldn't afford meat it get the iron they needed along the way more and more citamins were being put into things and when the low fat diet craze came about they would take out the fat in thing and then enrich it with synthetic vitamins and then use non food products to advertise healthy fat replacements that have no nutritional value.
I’m a dietitian. Grain products are enriched with vitamins and minerals to help you not only get the vitamins and minerals that are lost during processing but it adds more than what is in it naturally. Enrichment itself doesn’t cause weight gain, the vitamins and minerals actually support metabolism. However weight gain is caused be excess calories. It’s the lack of fiber that causes the calories bioavailability to be greater in processed products, not the enrichment itself. People can gain weight from organic pasta as much as enriched pasta.
I can't afford organic anything right now. The 2 things I'm growing organically are lemon trees and alfalfa sprouts. The sprouts took 4 days from seed to sprout. And, I sterilized them before consuming because there can be a risk when eating them. They have to grow in a moist, warm environment. I was very careful to follow the instructions. We've been eating them on salads and sandwiches for days and days now. I used to eat them at salad bars and never got sick.
Foods are enriched vitamins and minerals because back in the day people did not eat healthy. Bread was enriched and salt had iodine added to it. These were common staples everyone used. Many diseases are caused by vitamin deficiencies.
@@purpleemp-he6vu You are believing the lies. Most people ate healthy, farm foods and bottled milk was delivered daily. Except, during the depression.
Yes... but unfortunately they are enriched with synthetic forms of vitamins vs the natural forms, which makes a difference. There are studies linking synthetic vitamins with cancers, etc. Also the minerals are not in natural form, not sure if you've ever seen the "metal filings" videos showing removing iron filings from breakfast cereals. There's definitely more to it than most people are aware of. I agree with Pam, the more closely we can stick to simple, real ingredients the better! ❤
Miss Pam, I’m a Dietitian, enriched means that the company has incorporated additional vitamins to the product. So please, before assuming and posting your assumptions, it’s best you research what it means. The label you read clearly labeled these vitamins.
@@rachelv673 feel free to google any ingredient on the label to find out what it is. Some companies use the scientific name vs the universal name. It depends what you mean by enriched. Many products are fortified for the interest of public health (e.g., vitamin D in milk). They don't make you fat. Hidden fat, sugar and overprocessed food do (over because all cooked food is processed) but also because people who uften use overprocessed food in general don't eat healthy.
Folic acid is used in products to 1, help people to get the intake of Folate, to combat folate deficiencies in pregnant women, and reduce the risk of related birth defects. 🥰 While there are many preservatives that have some harm to them, and you should know what you're putting in your body, you also need to make sure you know what you're skeptical of.
Thank you very much for all the work that you do to tell us the truth about products and cook without certain items that harm us and everything you do I appreciate you Pam. Thank you very much.❤
Those products are sold all over the world, in America they are called enriched in other countries fortified. It is basically companies adding vitamins and iron to food because it is a way for them to make sure the consumer is getting those nutrients, just in case they eat a lot of pasta and nothing else, sometimes because they cannot afford to eat anything else.
Italy does not enrich or fortify their pasta and they are very healthy. Flour and water is all they use and sometimes egg. We should have a choice. I choose not to eat synthetic vitamins.
@@anniepurse2831 That's right it doesn't, and neither is Mac and cheese and Italian staple. Mac and cheese is American and mostly an African American dish who as a people are generally poor, so I presume that the American government sees "enriching" American produced macaroni pasta as a way of getting other nutrients into that community. @@maureensamson4863 yeah? All of those ingredients occur naturally in whole foods. If people would eat a proper diet with varied ingredients, they could get all of those nutrients straight from the source.
@sayhello5377 That's true, but the unfortunate reality is that many people don't have the money to get those things, don't have access to the education about how to balance a meal, and don't have the time it takes to prepare it. That's something that needs to be fixed, surely, but in the meantime it's important to make sure that necessary vitamins are being consumed
@@rachelv673 whole, simple foods prepared at home are extremely cheap. Far cheaper than processed foods. Being in good health also likely means less trips to the doctor which means lower health insurance needs. Your busy schedule means nothing if you are not healthy enough to complete it. All of your excuses are valid but super weak. I believe a lot of people are just suffering from laziness and addiction to flavor enhanced ultra processed foods who slap “enriched” on their labels so they can claim they are “healthy”, fooling the consumer. Ultra processed food brands are huge conglomerates. They really do not care about an individual’s health, hate to break it to you. They also partner with health insurance companies, obviously health insurance companies don’t want you to be perfectly healthy. Food conglomerates and US health insurance share a very symbiotic relationship.
Based on the price tags, a two pound of enriched macaroni pasta cost $1.89. The other price we saw was actually for a one pound of organic penne rigate pasta for $1.99.
You’re absolutely right! i’ve been doing that since before I even had children. My mother never served us any cereal for breakfast. We didn’t even know what it was. We we just ate soft boiled eggs and toast cut up to dip in the yolk. Back then food was more natural so I continued keeping healthy by being on a macro diet and when I had children, they didn’t even know what Sugar was until they went to school.
Thank you Ms. Pam for that advice. I look at my labels all the time and put it back on the shelf once I get past 4 or 5 items involved and names longer than the alphabets. 🧐🤔
The reason many shelf stable foods are enriched is to provide extra nutrition so that we don’t have malnutritional birth defects anymore like we used to. That’s why you rarely see children with birth defects anymore. You don’t hear that much about the March of Dimes because once we started enriching food. You didn’t have children with malnutrition, caused birth defects, which was very common when I was a kid, Many children had rickets or bow legs when I was a kid, but they fixed that by putting extra vitamin D in milk and adding it to cereals . many grain products are filling, but they aren’t that nutritious. Overall Bulgar wheat is far healthier than macaroni Noodles, over eating macaroni noodles made of ground flour will make you fat not the vitamins that were added to them. There are plenty of food additives to focus on, however vitamins aren’t one of them..
I love the cooking tips from Pam but I’m worried this one missed the mark. The enrichments listed are vitamins and minerals that we tend to miss in our diets. You’ll find the same things in breakfast cereals. E.g., Folate (folic acid) is important for healthy pregnancy. I agree we need to watch for additives that affect flavor so we crave more (sugars, salts, and fats). But I’m grateful for finding ways to make sure the population is getting needed vitamins
Enriched products or foods with added nutrients can be totally fine, but everyone should be conscious of what they’re buying and what’s in their food! Those nutrients are important to health, but especially those with food sensitivities may benefit from avoiding enriched products and getting those nutrients from whole foods. It’s about knowing what you’re eating!
Enriching the food is good be before this was done , lower income families would suffer by not getting enough of these minerals and vitamins the bread and pasta is enriched because we needed it and places that don’t have people with health problems from vitamin and mineral deficiency ,

When it comes to pasta I don't have the same varied choices as other people due to a wheat allergy. I have to buy Gluten Free pasta and there is usually only one or two choices brand wise. But I only end up having one choice because my stomach doesn't like quinoa and one of the brands has quinoa in it, so I have to get the pasta that doesn't have that in it so... no real choice, tbh.
I like the chickpea pasta. 1 ingredient. Has to be rinsed, but it's healthy..homemade pasta is the best! I've had good results with a new flour I got from Walmart. It's an all purpose. Half organic buckwheat and half organic oatmeal with xanthum. It's new. But I mix a little caputo in bc I get way better baking results that way. Noodles tho r the easiest gluten free thing to make out of anything I've made except maybe cookies. Tree street flour is really healthy too, but it does have a little quinoa.

Yes, enriched is bad, in all cases, when you see the words enriched and fortified that product has been modified for the worse.
Awesome Sharing ❤
I agree with the ingredients issue. Except the organic is twice the price, not 10 cents more. The regular pasta for $1.89 was the 32 oz box. The 16 oz is 99 cents vs $1.99 organic.
@pandapeek55 yes but in this case she chose a non brand name.
*Good catch! The organic is DOUBLE the price.*
I knew there was something wrong with her comparison. Organic is always a _lot_ more expensive.
That's interesting. Both boxes were 16 oz. but she showed the 32 oz. price for the enriched product. I hope that wasn't done on purpose. That's how you lose trust and damage your reputation.
@@justforshow629nope look at the box again when you are checking the price and even the box on the shelf was 32 oz.
Folic Acid is the synthetic form of Folate and isn't as bioavailable as folate. I guess it isn't terrible, but it definitely isn't a 1:1 replacement.
Those are empty additives
Those additives in excess are destructive to your organs and cellular metabolism. If you are eating enriched products all day, it's no good.
@@rashoff and lots of people can’t process folic acid so it can cause inflammation

Amen, Pam. Processed food is making people fat and sick. Avoid when possible. Good word❤❤❤
Everything is processed. 🤣 I don’t think you know what that means 😂

Roger that! Enjoy your weekend!
they enrich typically with vitamins and mineral, cause people don't get enough by eating simple carbs, like pasta. they even add calcium to oj and cereal now. enriched doesn't mean its preservatives, as that is what's unhealthy.
but junk food is ultimately what makes everyone fat, or eating too many calories. foods high in preservatives are also problematic.
no you are wrong. They are literally poisoning us on purpose.
@@mimsydreams yes, no such thing as “synthetic” iron. It either is or isn’t lmao

@@Bopzibeel You speak many words, all incorrect. Pam is correct
@@Bopzibeel I was thinking the same. AND what could be making us fat would be the cream and cheese added to make the macaroni and cheese! That will cause more health problems than enriched pasta which adds b vitamins and iron and other minerals!🤦🏻♀️
Ms. Pam thank you so much for doing these kinds of videos. We can all learn so much information that can keep us on the healthy side!!!
Fluoride is a horrible toxin. It does not enrich anything it’s placed in and it’s placed in every food you eat that you didn’t grow yourself.
Its vitamins. Since they started enrichment of grains with folic acid the incidence of neural tube defects in infants has reduced dramatically.

Great information! Thank you.

The sprouts took 4 days from seed to sprout.
And, I sterilized them before consuming because there can be a risk when eating them.
They have to grow in a moist, warm environment.

correct. enriched foods aren't the problem, but preservative heavy foods are.
Yes... but unfortunately they are enriched with synthetic forms of vitamins vs the natural forms, which makes a difference. ❤

I always read the labels, thank you Pam for the confirmation to continue to do so. ❤❤❤
