There are some excellent "educational" examples for Ironsworn solo play in this episode. I suspect a common trap in Ironsworn solo is interpreting every setback or complication as an immediate challenge to overcome, leading to a constant cascade of mechanical penalties or additional problems to resolve. Instead, this episode shows effective other approaches. The miss on the vow led to i) a narrative complication that informed future encounters and ii) a subtle mechanical penalty where you were forced to use Edge or Shadow instead of your stronger Wits for most of the exploration. The peril encountered in Research was just "banked" as a potential future issue. The overall effect of these is to maintain focus on the main plot of "explore the ship" but provide additional context, flavour, and difficulties during this plot. Recommended viewing/listening for a new Ironsworn player.
Thanks so much for watching and for leaving such a thoughtful analysis. I think this all comes from bitter experience. My first few sessions of OG Ironsworn solo were grinding failures. First session out, my character died having barely gotten out of the tavern they started in. Keeping the narrative strictly at the forefront and not being so harsh with the misses is key for me. Thanks again for stopping by!
@@thebadspot I'm very much enjoying what I've heard so far. Congratulations on completing your first season :) I'm looking forward to getting caught up.
Just a tip for Windows 10 Users listening to this, you can turn Mono audio on under the Windows Audio settings (just type Mono in the start menu and it will pull that option up). Audio was corrected after the first three episodes were recorded.
“Five fucking hit points”😂😂😭 I felt that. I’m playing Ironsworn myself. One thing you forgot to mention was even when player health drops to 0, you don’t die outright. You have to first endure harm however many times as you do then roll to decide whether your character shakes it off or is negatively affected. In my case, I was maimed. After a duel where I eventually killed the BBEG in my story, my character was basically left a hollow, broken shell of the man he used to be. And for rp purposes, that memory of the fight gives him PTS which is detrimental to a warrior’s mind. I love Ironsworn :)
Thanks for watching! Yes, I'm aware of the not dying at 0 health part, but brevity meant I couldn't include every nuance of the rules in this instance. Trying to overview the rules in less then 3 minutes will do that...
Very inspirational and great story telling. I assume there are edits where you spend five minutes trying to interpret the oracle rolls. If not I feel depressed at how easily you spin a yarn from a single word or two. Also, I love the narrative details you add that are not prompted by the dice.
5 minutes? I wish it only took 5 minutes! Each episode is the product of about 2 hours of play, so there is plenty of thinking and deliberating going on that is cut. Thanks for watching!

Halfway through, you mentioned the sound of a dot matrix printer... Which prompted a conversation with my wife, about how we are fairly certain our 13 year old kid has no idea what that is, or what it sounds like...
@@thebadspot Actually, I used to have an actual line printer. It could spit out reams of printed paper faster than you could fold it back up (remember how the paper was all bought connected and we had to not only separate the pages, but also tear away the perforated holes on each side?). Now THAT was a noisy machine. :)
Just purchased Ironsworn and Delves Hardcovers. I have a plan for a solo campaign about an escaped slave looking for her father's sword and the man who killed him, but I'll be buying this next

@@thebadspot quite possible. Not currently working (though I'll need to do something about that soon) so I have a lot of time to listen while I paint miniatures.
This is a great example for how to play this game solo and I highly recommend. I really need to consider using the higher stat array for a more heroic game. It really significantly cuts down on misses. Getting a string of misses in a row can really be tough on the brain trying to envision how things continue to go from bad to worse, but increasing the chances of misses even becoming weak hits is very helpful. Also increasing the odds of strong hits is very helpful too You had several rolls that would not have been strong hits if you were using regular stat line.
