    Dear Geekgamers. I have been toying with playing this RPG for a while, but couldn’t get my ‘head round it’, until I saw this play through...I bit the bullet, bought the print version (excellent quality btw) and went for it. I have to say, it was the best solo RPG experience I have had to date - absolutely brilliant. I played a female archer, Sedan, with her trusted canine companion, Fanir......sadly, she was killed in an epic struggle against a dire wolf (elder beast)...Fanir still roams the Wilds mourning his dead mistress....👍😀Thank you so much for the inspiration!!

    Thanks for the video! Really enjoyed it. Other folks have already identified the narrative or mechanical bits I would have remarked on (moving between your allies and the the combat progress track). For your character sheet, I might suggest you look at using paper clips for your trackers. It was explicitly designed for that, although tokens or scribbles will also work fine.
    Selfishly, I'd love to see you running a solo game with your third character, though I know you have plenty of games in the backlog. At the minimum, if you do play, please let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  6 лет назад +14

      Shawn Tomkin Thanks, Shawn, for such an awesome game! I think the paper clips would work (I started with them) but because I was filming it became a logistical problem to move them without placing one of my arms in front of the camera.
      And yes looking back now I see a few things I could have taken advantage of in your rules. You’ve thought of so much!
      While I can’t promise more adventures with the Woods Girl (these kinds of things are much harder to film that traditional games), I am still thinking about her so you never know!

    Thank you so much for this intro. I've been looking for an actual introduction on how to actually play Ironsworn and this is the ONLY video that shows how I could ACTUALLY start/build the game. Most other videos are just the gameplay itself. So THANK YOU ever so much for this amazingly done video.
    Another video of yours that I also checked is Blades in the Dark, and again it was soooo informative. Thank you so much for that too. You're really good at explaining these games.
    This is the only channel that does the intros right. It's really strange that most other channels go straight to the gameplay without ANY explanation of how they built their game first. Or if they do explain it, it is always in passing without explaining the underlying systems.

    Love this. Played a few solo games of Ironsworn and really like it. As far as your question about the initial tavern encounter, I believe - and how I understand it (haven't played with two characters myself so YMMV) is that you can do what you did as long as the narrative supports it. So Sir Torr could be seeking an advantage from the barkeep and Eowan could be mingling about with the other NPC in the tavern.

    Just finding your channel after starting to research solo rpg stuff. Thank you for a WONDERFUL beginning exploration of Ironsworn! I've been a video/digital rpg player for decades, but during this time of isolation, I wanted to start creating stories of my own through pen & paper rpg. Found Ironsworn, and have been looking up various videos to see how to engage in this sort of format. Of all of the videos I have seen, yours is the most engaging, demonstrative, exciting, and inspirational that I've found. This has been an enormous help for me, my getting started - everything you've shown here - not just your narrative/storytelling, but the way in which you use the actual, physical materials within this system - from the published book, to your dice and printed materials, all the way down to your journal writing and sketches. Such a fantastic "tutorial" for me! Thank you!

    I am just getting into Ironsworn and it looks good. One of the things that initially (before I actually read much) caused me some concern was the concept of Moves. I took it to mean that there were limited options, somewhat like a Choose Your Own Adventure book. I wanted to have the freedom that you find in every other RPG, where you just do whatever you want and hope that your character's skills support it. I am just now starting to read up on the Moves and am thankful that I appear to have been wrong.

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  4 года назад +1

      Actually, the moves in Ironsworn function almost the opposite of what you thought: they allow for freedom and aren't restrictive. Basically you decide what you want to do and then look for a move that will most closely describe that. There's room for a ton of interpretation. You are not looking at a list of moves, choosing one, and then doing that thing.

    I would say either or character could try their luck at gathering information. With the use of the Aid Your Ally move (pg. 76) I could almost see your Knight maybe doing some menial chores like bringing in some firewood so that the Pilgrim could get more of the attention of the bar keep. Normally the Aid Your Ally is another player's character but I don't see any reason to not have the characters just interact with themselves organically.
    I know a while back I asked about this for solo play and boy was it worth the wait. Thanks for putting up some videos about this very awesome system.

    I'm not sure anyone mentioned it, but the Volume 2 Assets have a "Kindred" Companion I think you could have used in place of a full blown character for your priest, if you wanted to keep the spotlight on Sir Torr. This would simplify things into playing to one character's abilities but, of course, would limit what the priest could do outside of the narrative (and would also take up one of your Assets). Love your videos and I look forward to more!

    I am 4 years late (discovered Ironsworn just recently), but anyway, I just wanted to make a little observation about the comment at 47:20, and that is NO, the fact that you get the progress to 10 doesn´t mean the wolf is dead. That only means your chances of victory are bigger, because you still need to score a hit with the END THE FIGHT move. In fact, that is why the progress bar is set to a maximum of 10 and a big part of the narrative magic of this system: even with a full progress bar at 10, you can still lose the fight if both challenges dices score a 10 each, leading to unexpected plot twists 😄

    Great videos! My friends are lame, so I play solo a lot. I do have one question on the combat rules though. When your enemy has the initiative and they score a strong or weak hit, do you not take the harm they inflict? Is it only from the pay the price chart that you suffer harm? Even then, though, it's rare that you suffer harm. I am just a little confused.

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  4 года назад

      FortyNothing It’s been a while but I think that if your enemy has initiative and makes a strong hit you suffer harm and they retain initiative; if they make a weak hit you still suffer harm but they lose initiative. The amount of harm the foe inflicts is based on their rank (see p. 134 of the rules).

    Just played my first session with this system last night. I am playing as a Olympian style athlete who specializes in track and field. When children and livestock suddenly went missing or their mangled bodies were found, I swore an Iron Vow to find who or what was responsible and end the killings. I made my way through the forest, swam across a great river, fought some marsh rats, and entered a tomb which happened to house a somewhat friendly vampire. Apparently he keeps cages of Varou (werewolves) in his crypt because he survive 10 times as long on their blood than the blood of humans. But one of his "doggos" as he calls them escaped and has been terrorizing my village. He asks me to swear and Iron Vow to return his pup, but my character decides vowing something so important to an evil creature of the night goes against what he believes in and refuses and runs out of there despite the vampire's mind-control and intimidation attempts. He assured me that if his missing Varou weren't returned to him, unharmed, he would take his revenge tenfold on the town. As my adventure stands now, I just made it back to my home village and have to decide my next moves.

    Hello and thank you for the video! Also looking forward to seeing what happens next.
    As someone who is just getting into solo RPGs, the prospect of imagining an entire narrative to play through from scratch seems daunting. I think I would want to bring in some additional generative resources to help with plot/world creation (more than you did in this video). Do you have any recommendations for a particular title you think would be well suited to pair with this system? Perhaps the Tome of Adventure Design?

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  6 лет назад +1

      Glad you are enjoying it. I totally understand feeling daunted at the prospect of creating an entire narrative. Supporting materials are awesome for all of us. I tried consciously in this video not to use too many other things (and what I did use, I used sparingly) but I absolutely think that THE TOME OF ADVENTURE DESIGN would help immensely with this ruleset! I'm also a fan of THE CLASSIC DUNGEON DESIGN GUIDE but that is more limited in scope than THE TOME is.

      The great thing about solo play is you only need a starting idea and you'll play to find out what happens next! You certainly don't need a full plot line to get started (and in fact, that's probably less fun if you know what's coming next). Don't lose heart!

    Just a question/clarification.
    At 47:15 you say that when the track reaches 10, you win the fight.
    I think you actually might still lose the fight, as you obtain a hit only when your score is HIGHER than the challenge roll.
    So, even if you have the full track at 10, you still might roll a double ten on the challenge roll and lose the fight.
    I'm not 100% sure of this, so please let me know if I am mistaken.

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  5 лет назад +1

      Eduardo Rodrigues Figuring enemies for combat is always tricky unless you are sticking with something like a straight d&d which does the math for you based on XP of the party. Generally I just use a rule of thumb that I don’t want to be outnumbered by more than double (so max two to one) however in some cases that can be too much too.
      You could create a chart where you rolled for a likely chance of a “hard” encounter vs and “easy” one and assign #s of monsters based on what you rolled. As always, it’s just about fun so if you don’t want to die in 5 minutes, don’t have your level 1 solo adventurer encountering hoards of giants!

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  6 лет назад +1

      Completely different. All they share in common is that they use pen/paper to play.
      d100 Dungeon is a dungeon crawl and, as the name suggests, the 'choices' you get are solely based on d100 tables and populated with what the designer has given. The quests are one or two sentence descriptions of things to do which basically boil down to killing/collecting. There is little to no story/narrative though of course you can bring your own to the system. It does invite that I suppose but that isn't integral to what its mission is. It's a pen/paper dungeon crawl, and a good one at that.
      Ironsworn is an RPG. The rules support/encourage/scaffold/demand a story with narrative highs and lows; npc interactions; combat; discovery. You are limited only by what you bring to it. It will work in many settings--overland adventures; cities/towns/villages; etc. The characters are who you make them; the world is what you create.
