I was diagnosed with autism about a year ago ( I was 22) and was given very little support. I was recommended two books on social rules and ettiquete and sent on my way. I didn't even know what a stim was until I found your channel. I was still beating myself up for things that, after watching a few of your videos, I realise are just facets of my autism. So, Thank You so much!

I've started getting diagnosed, although I'm already pretty sure I have it. It's been years and years of not knowing what's wrong with me. Some people say "oh it would be just an excuse to be lazy". Believe me, if I can I'm not lazy, but being paralyzed by mixed emotions and thoughts, sleeping a lot and waking up in the middle of the night with fear, it's not fun. NT people say "just wake up early, get out of bed, go for a walk, eat breakfast and your day will be great". But what if I cannot find shoes, decide what type of clothes wear for this weather, then have nothing eatable in the fridge (although I have many things, just can't eat it now). So after such morning I lack of energy for the rest of the day and just want to sleep, my mind drifts off. My best mornings are when I have plenty of time to wake up, find clothes, prepare food and it's already 1 pm. But.. if I'm in a good condition, I can do things much faster and on higher level than anybody else I know. Complex analysis, deep understanding, great new ideas. Just those everyday mundane tasks take a lot of energy

Thank you so much for all your videos, Sam - I was just diagnosed ASD1 with alexithymia - at 60! That's a lot of life to re-assess and soooo much self-denying masking to un-learn... It's not that I plan to be madly anti-social now, but I'm not going to squash my own needs down any more. Please keep making videos - yours have been amongst the most helpful to me. Very best wishes!

It took me over a year to recover from the adult _assessment_ process. And, as you described, as soon as I was given my diagnosis in July 2017, it was "Don't let the door hit you on the way out!". There is *zero* support for autistic adults in most of Scotland - whether they were diagnosed as kids, or have been recently diagnosed. 😡

Great video, thanks. I've recently self-diagnosed at the age of 43 and it's videos like yours that are really helping me to self-affirm and realise that I have been living in the shadow of others for so long. I'm beginning to believe in myself more now, and not feeling that I need to wear these masks all the time.

I got my diagnosis 2 months ago, and this video resonated with me so much. Caring for my needs, some of which I'm just starting to recognize as being related to autism and not just laziness or moodiness, as a mom, is a big challenge. I hate the looks I get when I share my autism, but I, too, am sharing more. It's not like not sharing has been working great for me, LOL.

I am now in my mid-50's and find myself having never been able to relate to people...accept my son, who is on the spectrum. I just find it so much easier to communicate with someone who says the word 'green' and you know he means 'green', whereas, with neurotypicals, there is a dance of 'tone of voice', 'affect', and 'body language' one has to go through in order to really understand what the individual is saying. And even then, I find so much miscommunication takes place that leads to misunderstanding and heated arguments. And they say Autism is a communication disorder? I wonder if maybe we have been looking at it backward. Cheers from Canada.

    • @jofriedman4528
      @jofriedman4528 5 лет назад +3

Gary The Gray - yes!! I wonder sometimes if I might be on the spectrum. I finding connecting with other autistic people quite relieving. Their succinct and very particular clarity of perception, thought processes and communication is such a relief from people who just don't seem to really take care with their words. I would wonder why they bothered opening their mouths when there was perfectly enjoyable silence preceding it if they didn't really have anything to clearly articulate. Luckily, I can usually read enough subtext, likely assumptions and misperceptions, assumed expectations of response for delivered communication (not in line with the actual words) but it's absolutely exhausting because I'll likely pull it apart and address the real issue/question rather than contort myself to dysfunctional relating. Maybe that's not autism, just an appreciation of people who are articulate and succinct.
My experience of engaging with others with autism is that it is communicative RELIEF! Neurotypicals, as you refer to them, can be a bloody nightmare for all the reasons you have stated above.

Your videos are great though as I’ve got no one the same as me and to find a fellow female is just absolutely amazing. I’ve even sent stuff to my mum who I’m currently estranged from as she called the police on me twice when ‘autism showed through’ in the form of meltdowns

I just got diagnosed as a middle aged female and came looking for something like this. Now what? When I realized I was probably autistic, I did and still do, replay my entire life. And also my mother's behavior because I think she was also autistic. I'm trying to reframe all those bad experiences and I feel like now I'm taking the blame on myself.
What I wanted to say was thank you for your videos. It was your channel specifically that helped me realize this about myself. Especially your DSM explained video. So just a thank you!

I relate strongly to what you say about relating to people on their terms. After (late) diagnosis (at 53)
most people said don’t let it define you,or don’t become the diagnosis; or well, nobody has to know; or in the case of my parents; we’ve coped for over 50 years so it doesn’t matter...... !!! Meaning no change necessary! They wouldn’t even go to the post diagnosis group for friends & family! Oh and practically everyone said something along the lines of, well, it must be very mild, well never mind, noone can tell, & I had worse things said to me as well.... like.... I hope you’re not going to use it toget your own way all the time/excuse rude behaviour/..... oh, & the well, you’re no different to us, we struggle with that too, just not so extremely......... & many variations of these comments! Would love to connect with you on fb.

The sociatal gaslighting is not just a gender specific thing i've found. It seems to be from anyone who just doesnt understand something. its easier to dismiss something unknown then to expose ones self and risk it being something new and scary.

Great video! What is difficult about being diagnosed in adulthood is that most of the resources are directed towards children, in Canada at least. There are also strong stereotypes that make the general population think that autism is very visible when meeting someone. They have in mind only the non-functional cases, like in the movies, like Rain Man. There is a lot of awareness to be done.

I can't get anyone with experience diagnosing autism of any kind, never mind in women. The only real thing we can get where we are is telepsych sessions, meaning the session(s) are done over the tv, and they can't even see if you are looking at them or not, or stimming, etc. and there's always a time delay and glitches making it harder yet. I asked for a specific Aspergers/autism assessment and the guy on the screen actually said, "You are making eye contact with me just fine." I was actually looking at myself in the smaller screen in the corner to see if my face looked right and if I was shaking at all because I was so nervous, I wasn't looking at him at all and my 'reflection' was super distracting. I guess I should have told him that, but I just concluded he was as stupid as all the other psychologists I've seen over the years and shut down instead. He decided I probably have borderline. Knowing more from these and other videos, I might try one more time. I just super hate my GP as he's never really listened to me and I don't feel like I'd get anywhere with him anyway. We live in such a small town I'm not sure there's any point

I'm male and was diagnosed with autism at the age of 46. I can attest to the fact that being gaslit isn't limited to women. I KNEW something was going on... I spent 30 years trying to figure it out. I've been so over the country to specialists and the majority of the doctors I met with gaslit me. Then, one day, my psychologist was listening to me explain the issues I have work socializing and she smiled "well, I think that's because you're autistic..." and my entire universe changed overnight.

I feel like I wasn't assessed properly and cannot be reassessed in the public health care system. They want be to get treatment for bpd, which is the diagnosis they gave me, needless to say I do not believe weekly group therapy would benefit me at all, especially aimed at bpd. Seeking help without a diagnosis isn't an option. I need a black on white diagnosis to have access to support through the public health care system. So it's all a mess meanwhile life at home is really hard.

I tried to get help seeking a more thorough and proper diagnosis from my psych. but he literally refused, and threatened me with a baker act if I didn't take the meds he prescribed which were making it worse. I had to seek diagnosis on my own. It's not easy but it can be done.

If you google autism + your city/area, you should get a list of all the organisations in your area that offer help. Also, some of the autism centres that diagnose people, also offer other things, like sport groups, art groups, womens groups, etc. You should ask yours if they offer "psycho-educatie". That usually happens in a group, and is also a good way to meet people (and is super useful anyway).
