Deliberately corrupting the cartridge and preventing you from playing the game you legally purchased sounds like a great way to get sued for breaching consumer protection laws and deliberately damaging a customers property

imma be honest, Nintendo and Rare probably got told by their legal department to never do that again after the Donkey Kong one, since that's probably considered destruction of property since they're altering your game completely and rendering it unplayable, and at the time if you bought a game you were considered to outright OWN that copy.

There's also Slenderman. Some players tried to dodge him by going outside the playing area, only to find the developers had anticipated that. So cheaters found Slenderman waiting in ambush for them and telling them "Not even a bug in this game can save you from me."
There's also Banjo-Kazooie, where Gruntilda the witch tells you to stop cheating or she'll erase your saves. Don't listen to her and she does it.

I know it's a simple one but it's a classic. Banjo Kazooie and the "I'll delete your save file". It's fine to enter two illegal cheat codes (anything that modifies the castle aka opening levels or opening note doors) but you will get a warning after the second that threatens your save. If you proceed to enter a THIRD illegal cheat AND confirm that you want to use said cheat the save game is gone.

I actually really like that about the Phantom Menace, it said yes, we know you cheat, we're not here to judge, but lets make it a challenge. It gives a game as old as that a surprisingly good amount of replayability, as you can now purposely increase the difficulty and test yourself how many times you fail, or fail so many times you effectively lock yourself out, or see if you can complete the game without resorting to cheat healthing once. I wish more developers did that, instead of pointlessly finger wagging, as if it's somehow so morally wrong to cheat/make it more fun if a level/puzzle of a game is too hard, boring, or confusing.

Enter the Matrix had a cheat for unlimited ammo and slow-mo and whatnot, the catch was, every time you started a level, a grenade would be placed behind you, so if you didn't move, the grenade would kill you. Easily avoidable, until you got to the mission on an airplane and a hostage you needed to keep alive. Who was strapped to a chair at the start of that level and instantly died to the grenade, basicly locking you out of playing the last few levels. (Not 100% sure, it was a long time ago lmao)

    Here's another example from Rare.
In Banjo-Kazooie, there are two kinds of cheat codes you can enter in game for various effects. The first are "legal" cheats, obtained from visiting the character cheato (he's hidden in various parts of the lair). These "legal" cheats were perfectly okay to use as much as you liked, and were typically toggle-able things. The second kind are "illegal" cheats, which can be activated by entering "cheato", followed by the code, said code being in reverse. These "illegal" cheats often did countless sequence breaking things, such as opening levels or even whole sections of the lair you don't yet have access to, as well as manually unlocking stop 'n' swop secrets, which weren't obtainable any other way at that time. As you can imagine, the "illegal" cheats were quite powerful, but that power comes with a catch, you can only enter an "illegal" code three times without consequence, and the game WILL warn you for each entry. If you entered an "illegal" code a fourth time, there would be no immediate consequence while you still played, but once you quit, the game would wipe the save file. It would be GONE the next time you loaded it up. Thankfully, the game DOESN'T do this without telling you, as the game straight up lets you know your save file will be erased once you enter that fourth code. As such, if you ended up loosing all your progress to this, well, it was your own fault for using too many illegal cheats.
Banjo Tooie also had a similar system in place with legal and illegal cheats, but thankfully the consequences weren't so dire, as entering an illegal cheat would simply disable your ability to save, rather than wiping your save file.

You wouldn’t think this would count as cheating, but in The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigi no Dungeon, if you go into the dungeon and start getting your butt kicked, you’d better not press reset or turn the console off to get out of the butt kicking, because if you do, the game counts it as a death, and you get hit with the same penalty as you get hit with for dying. On top of that, when you load the save file the next time, you are forced to sit through a lengthy lecture as the goddess Ishtar reams you over severing the chain of time, and makes you promise repeatedly that you will not do it again. Moreover, her tone changes if you do it again. My biggest caveat to this is power failures, like blackouts and such. You wouldn’t have any control over that, but the game would still hold you accountable for it.

I have promised myself this year to respect my own time more; playing more videogames, reading (more) books, watching more movies etc. And the reason why I failed at these things back in 2024 (and all years prior) was because of recycled crap like this. If you have the cheat active that blows up cars you hit, a single one will set your car on fire, and then blow it up. Only happens there, never before it to my knowledge. Using the game's system to "Cheat" through the game.
Example: Fallout New Vegas and Gambling... but you have a high luck skill...
First... get max Luck at start.
Second... get to New Vegas... however you can
Third... Starting in Freeside, gamble - preferrably with Blackjack - in the available locations there to get enough for the cyber enhancement that gives you +1 luck. For those paying attention, that means you now have 11 points in luck.
Get inside the Strip. The least expensive ways are to use computer to hack the gate robot, or get in through camp McCarron, steal a uniform and ride the tram.
Once inside the strip, gamble away. You come out of all of that gambling with some awesome starter items and combat armor and skip going around the entire circle of roads to get to New Vegas (provided you thread the needle between Deathclaws and Super Mutants)

Ubisoft really are idoits why put in the in game cheats if unlocking them ruins your ability to save they never should make in game unlockable cheats if its just to be a middle finger to the player in single player for using the tools the devs at Ubisoft themselves provide in the coding.

ONE OF THE DEVELOPERS OF THE ROMHACK POKEMON CLOVER HERE
WE HAVE AN ANTI-CHEAT BUILT INTO THE GAME THAT CHECKS FOR A NUMBER OF THE USUAL CHEAT CODES, AND IF IT DETERMINES YOU'VE BEEN NAUGHTY AFTER YOU BEAT THE CHAMPION, YOU GET ARRESTED AND THROWN IN AN INESCAPABLE JAIL INSTEAD OF ENTERING THE HALL OF FAME :^)

either this is bait, or you've just outed your romhack as worthless garbage with equally worthless developers who think they have the right to virtue signal at their fans instead of letting them play the game the way they want.

@GinaRanTruthEnforcer WE DO. FRANKLY TELLING A DEVELOPER THEY DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE THE GAME THE WAY THEY WANT TO IS A LITTLE PRESUMPTUOUS.
