THE AERIAL SCREW: There's a Reason da Vinci's Helicopter Was Never Built

  • Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am attempting to replicate Leonardo da Vinci's aerial screw. It was essentially a pre-helicopter design that was never fully realized. There might be some reasons for that.

    About Trailmakers:
    In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
    Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
    Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
    Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
    Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
    Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
    Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

    Da Vinci would be so proud that his creation actually works in a simulated world inside the personal thinking machine of a guy called Man of Scrap. And that people can watch a moving and talking picture of his creation actually working on their own thinking machines.

    I think you can get this thing to work better by adding vertical fins to the lower part, increasing the drag when it rotates. This in essence allows the rotating servo to push against the air to rotate the top part. (angular momentum is conserved as the air (in real life at least) would be pushed back)

    Theres a paper “plane” design where its just a tube with fins all around the rim on one end of the tube
    And you’d throw it while giving it a spin and it should fly
    Quoted “plane” because its not really a plane, its just a tube lol
    Note: Look up “Flying paper tube” for reference

    Try making the French "Marquis' Multiplane" of 1908. It was originally a flightless machine, but seeing how you tinker in trailmakers, i think you can pull it off and make a flying version.
    Also, you could use magnets to try and 'grab' the sails in a certain positions like the transformer you showed in this video of yours.

    • @FastForwardPlans
      @FastForwardPlans 2 года назад

      People were aware of da vinci's design back when the first attempts at propellers were made. They were tried for both boats and planes, and in both cases it kind of worked, but not nearly as well as the blades we currently use. They were louder, slower, and far easier to break. They are a interesting idea and another proof of da vinci's genius, but like a lot of the hypothetical things he mused about, right direction, but impractical.

  • @barefootalien
    @barefootalien 5 месяцев назад +1

    This actually wouldn't be all that hard to modify to get working in Trailmakers. I can think of two different ways.
    One, tailfins or sails extending radially outward from the base would provide a lot more rotational drag, putting much more of the power into the air-screw.
    Alternatively, any even number of them connected to each other, with corkscrews in counter-rotating pairs would work, though then it'd just be a primitive quad-copter.
    You could also make one with two concentric corkscrews on concentric axles with gearing to make them counter-rotate, but... I think that'd far outstrip the materials available and understanding of mechanics of the time.
