The Ambrose band returns with the classic "Day By Day", another superb recording from their "HMV" period....
One of the greatest and most beloved London orchestras of the late 1920s through the 1940s was without doubt (Bert) Ambrose's band whose 78rpms are still found in great quantity in Belgium today . Born in the east of London in 1896, Ambrose started his career in the USA before returning to London in 1922 when he was asked to play at the Embassy Club... His band soon became known for its elegant sound and superb arrangements. Vocalists with the band included Sam Browne, Kitty Carlisle, Evelyn Dall and most famously Vera Lynn.... He played not only at the Embassy Club but also at the May Fair Hotel (and seemed to alternate between these two venues) and recorded many sides for Brunswick, HMV and Decca... He retired from performing in 1940 but continued to make recordings.... Later on he decided to perform again but he suffered considerably from the demise of the big band era. He died in 1971.

Thank you for uploading this great song from the great era that was 1930s music, leotaurus1975. We juts don't have the equivalents today where music epitomised the era and was such a fundamental part of the time period.

Thanks for this transfer-it is one of the clearest I have ever heard from this vintage of HMVs-was it taken from an Electrola-that might explain it.

Nice song and clip, even if that fashion looks 1940's to me, not 1930's.

Ambrose had a gambling lean and once said on Desert Island Discs that he could loose thousands on a bet and not be bothered, but would be deeply distraught if his band played badly.
