One of my favorite scenes ever. What it says about family, forgiveness, friendship and food and how it says it, with barely any words, is in my opinion one of the few examples of cinema reaching its full potential.
This scene sealed the movie as a 10-star gem. It was great up to this point, but how could it possibly wrap? A brave, unbroken take, Tucci cooking eggs in real time, the blocking of the characters, the way Marco puts the egg on his bread even! --- but it's missing the most poignant, key moment -- when Tucci puts his arm out around his brother, and his brother responds, wordlessly.
Can't believe how much I love this comment, to kill the name you were born with in every way possible that you could send the ashes of that burnt loved one to there father's father without a care in the world but to then wake and start a fresh over easy even without it being said. Family
@@jondunmore4268 By leaving it out, does it make more universal? For us knowing do with finish the scene with pleasure tasting the interdependence. With a simple minute omelette, would we partially wreck it adding our spices, veggies, does Tucci not already care by adding the bread basket onto the (peace-tranquil) offering?
I love this scene. As someone with an older brother who is an occasional pain in the ass, I can say that this is one of the most honest moments in any film about family. Gonna use this in my media class...
I adore this movie but always wonder how three eggs fed three people. But I love how he puts the bread in the basket for his brother, knowing what a stickler he is about presentation.
I've always thought this too. A three egg omelette is a serving for one person. Five or six eggs would have been more realistic. But I guess the scene works slightly better without him standing there cracking all those eggs.
Eine der beeindruckensten Filmszenen, die ich jemals im Kino sah. Ach! La Famiglia! Einfach ist es nicht und wird es niemals werden. Aber so kann man davon erzählen. Weniger Worte sind mehr.
There was a cool tradition in Chicago where a theatre would show this movie and then the viewers could go immediately afterward to a local Italian restaurant where they recreated the big meal.
Without a doubt, the best scene in the movie, but you have to see the rest of the movie to appreciate its beauty. The movie in itself is a masterpiece.
My favorite scene in the movie - so simple, utterly wordless, the calmness belies it's emotional heft. Too bad it was cut off just before the moment of greatest sentimentality.
Pixelologist I agree with you about how simple the scene appears to be with the brothers not speaking at all but the body language says it all. Amazing! Also, there is an underlying tension because of what happened the night before that goes undiscussed. So well acted.
After I watched Primo make the eggs that way for the first time, I could make them no other way. I think because I loved this scene so much I wanted to remain connected with it. Which is strange, I suppose. LOL. But this scene has been one of my favorites ever since the first time I watched the movie. Really beautiful.
I watched this movie in the theater when it came out. I was on a date that night with this woman and we both said how hungry the film made us. The food in the film looked sooooo good!!! We ran to a nice restaurant and pigged out!!
almost time for me to watch this movie again, I've seen it at least a dozen times but haven't in years... I once uploaded the Big Night feast until RUclips made me take it down :/
awwwyeaboyeeee yeah I was looking forward to that moment when they put their arms across the others shoulders. Shows that even though their dreams have been cut short, they still have their brotherly love and affection for each other which is more important than any restaurant.
Watching Marc Anthony eat was a surreal experience for me. It has always been a fantasy of mine to cook for him and watch him eat...because he’s so skinny. And, Stanley Tucci did it.
Being of half Italian descent (my Father was born in Calabria before emigrating at 5yo) i was really impressed with Tony Shaloub's performance. Where did he learn Italian? His accent wasn't too bad for Hollywood either. Isn't his family Lebanese? Although i know a lot of Italian & Lebanese families that married together and have close relations.
I have never watched this movie but I must have watched this 100 times. I have no idea who these people are but looks like they were in a big conflict and decided to keep moving forward with each others. I don't even like omelet nor can i see the omelet clearly but this scene always make me hungry.
Personally, this scene is so precious because it feels incredibly realistic. I realize how I love and I appreciate my brother/brotherhood. Everytime after me and my brother fight, regardless what happened, you never solve your problems by talking about the problem but rather you prepare a lunch for/with him and you quietly eat it together.
a believe this scene does well to showcase that quiet bond between brothers this was a well put-together film believe you me i've worked with my brothers in the restaurant business as well as Entertainment it's not always easy but the camraderie comes through at the end!!
Breakfast Scene from Big Night: almost 5 minutes without music or dialogue. But no reason for neither, the actors carry the scene. true professionals. Great directing. Now if I could only cook eggs like that. 8o)
Such a beautiful and simple scene...and I'm really happy that they got it all in one take...great job! I almost forgive Marc Anthony for having anything to do with that woman he married, whose name I refuse to acknowledge or utter.
RUclips-tied I agree with your comment about forgiving (almost) Marc Anthony for associating with that woman. Totally agree! You have to admit he acts really well. Love how understated his acting is.
@@anitaadvani8464 ...I agree.. His character hardly said 10 words, if that, the whole film. Yet, you could feel his presence whenever he was in a scene. Good acting..
I love this scene but as a chef it really bothers me how high he heats the pan. They pretty much cook instantly. Literally. He pretty much heats the pan longer than it takes to cook them.
628roseb628...then you don't know about cooking. Olive oil won't burn on that high heat for a touch more than a minute. If you've watched it so many times, you would have began the count of when the pan touched the flame at :35, until he added the eggs at 1:35. Quit exaggerating and do your homework..

Hello everyone who just watched Bobby Flay on "Hot Ones"!
Watch tonight's episode of Billions. There is a scene towards the end that pays homage to this scene.
I love this scene. As someone with an older brother who is an occasional pain in the ass, I can say that this is one of the most honest moments in any film about family.
Gonna use this in my media class...
I have loved this scene since we saw the movie back in 1996. Sometimes I watch it over and over when stressed out.
Same here i have it On dvd
this scene is so realistic it's almost unnatural
I could watch this all day just to watch Tucci cook. He's such a natural.
Barely a word is spoken, yet so powerful.
This has always been one of my favorite scenes. I can almost taste the eggs & toast :)
0IAmMe Me too. It makes me hungry for an omelette!
Toast? No toast in this scene.
No toast. While he was cooking, I was wishing that he would have toasted the bread. Then, paradise!
Billions brought me here

as Norm MacDonald would say... "I like to stretch my omelette dollar"
Billions sent me here -I have no shame admitting it.

I've only watched the full movie once but I tell people about this memorable scene and I how I can watch it over and over and still be fixated.
There was a cool tradition in Chicago where a theatre would show this movie and then the viewers could go immediately afterward to a local Italian restaurant where they recreated the big meal.
Nothing happens and yet everything happens. Wonderful scene, with no cuts - because Tucci is such a boss. Oh and perfect omelette making.
The opening scene with Marc Anthony smoking at the beach before service is just as brilliant.
the movie is good because the ending is real. I would not have believed the story if the brothers succeeded.
tough business that restaurant business...
Without a doubt, the best scene in the movie, but you have to see the rest of the movie to appreciate its beauty. The movie in itself is a masterpiece.
i think this is the greatest scene of all time. it floors me.
If anyone has ever worked in a restaurant this scene makes perfect sense.

Exactly. No word for 5 minutes... Incredible in this time of Right Here, Right Now (even 1996). Great movie.
“Billions” just did this ending in one of their episodes. Paul Giamatti cooked the omelet.
One of the best food movies ever, up there with Tampopo. These great stories, told through food, always seem to say so much about life
this and Eat Drink Man Woman

Now watch the same scene done in an episode of Billions Season 5!
Just came over from Hot Ones. It is one take. Nice.
me too! :D Hi lol Tucci's a boss
Its hard to believe that its the same guy as in The Lovely Bones! What a good actor Tucci is!
También salió en ER
I love how there are no words after “ I do it”. Such a great movie scene.
Perfection, one of my favorite scenes ever in cinema
I think they just recreated this scene in Billions. I may be wrong but this is literally the scene they did.
Yup they copy pasted this scene basically
Wonderful closing scene to one hell of a wonderful movie.

So beautiful scene i love how it's just without a dialogue
Billions season 5 episode 10 brought me here.
I love how Stanley Tucci cooks that omelette. Perfection! I am a chef and that is exactly how to cook an omelette properly!
Yes even that! If you have fresh farm eggs and good home baked bread you really don't need much seasoning.
He really does like cooking.
+Anita Zenobia Ah, really? I have wondered that every time I've seen this. Thank you.
+Anita Zenobia Wait. Even the high flame for such a long time??
He made some scrambled eggs. Take it easy. I’m also a chef and if you can’t crack an egg with one hand then you’re not a chef
One of the most meaningful scenes in all of cinema. 10/10.
So strange how the one man most noted for his voice never said a word throughout the entire film.
Who’s here from watching Billions?
gonna be a lotta folks coming here from the hot ones interview
Video was cut a little too short.

The only thing missing from the scene is coffee. No way that 3 Europeans guys like them have breakfast without a good strong coffee.

Only after watching this scene, I started enjoying eggs for breakfast.

Nowadays they would cut this 4-minute-scene into 20 different camera-shots and everybody would be talking the whole time.
Left out the most important part!!!
esta escena es mi favorita, la he recordado durante años, cada vez que hago una omelette recuerdo esta escena, es memorable y perfecta.
Gran película

If anyone's curious where Primo was at all night, he was getting lucky with Ann. I learned that from the book.
When the world falls apart, some things stay in place.

you can "smell" the olive oil, the eggs and the yesterday's bread in this scene.

I was pretty indifferent about the movie but I loved this scene.
Cut it off at the best part,....when the two brothers put their arms around each other.....
