- Gardens generally have enough going on that you have to make decisions on what to eliminate so you can make a clear statement about what the light is doing. Don’t get caught up in all the detail, broken color will keep you from losing what the light is doing.

Thank you very much for this video. it was very helpful. Painting gardens can be really challenging. But trying to picture them in terms of layers I think would really help. I loved what you did with it.
When I saw the first photo - I saw absolutely nothing worthwhile in it. Then you added some colour, and it looked gorgeous!
Thanks Norm!
Absolutely love your videos! They keep me thinking!
Glad you like them!
Your tree just glows! Thank you Phil.
You’re welcome, Dana
Hey Phil, thank you for that detailed master class. What really caught my attention and will try to implement is to divide a reference photograph into 3-4 max overlapping planes/layers and I will try to fit the objects into one of these planes. Also the only way to differentiate between planes / layers is by changing the value. And each object sharing a particular plane must also hence, share the same value! I think will write this and put on the wall infront of me!
It does help simplify things
Super helpful
Glad to hear!
Thanks, this layering approach to simplifying (and colour muting) is very helpful
Glad it was helpful Joe
