you don't necessarily need to press shift all the time, there is the option where you click the squares to be able to make multiple selections @ the top where the options palette shows, but you will have to click the other one to get back to selecting one at a time(single square)
double solid squares means multiple selection(tool tip also tells you when you hover over them).

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I am working on a project and I wanted to give the photo a bit of an edge but still keep a high end feel and I think this is exactly what I needed. With the typography and a few minor touches my project will surely turn heads.

Here's a quick tip, add an outer glow effect to each layer. Set it to screen with the colour white. Set the size to about 60. Mess around with it a bit to get a nice result. I personally find that the outer glow is more effective against the black background

Choose Edit > Clear, or press Backspace (Windows) or Delete (Mac OS). To cut a selection to the clipboard, choose Edit > Cut.
Deleting a selection on a background layer replaces the original color with the background color. Deleting a selection on a standard layer replaces the original color with layer transparency

@joshuadawson88 Make sure the shapes aren't selected, de-select them if they are, and make sure the bottom last layer, the original image layer, is highlighted, before you fill it in.

I love the tutorial but seem to have trouble once I get to the point where I'm supposed to put the grey in the squares. All i get is a whole bunch of grey dots inside each of the boxes and I don't know why since I've done this one before with out the issues. Any ideas what I might be doing differently that's making this problem?
