  • You're probably seen the effect of making an everyday object appear to be painted or made of a strange material before. The effect is popular on adverts and creative websites like worth1000 but how is it done?
Well it's all down to the displace filter. This prehistoric filter is very unhelpful to look at but digital expert Gavin Hoey www.gavtrain.com shows you how to use it and create amazing results

Just did this today. Someone posted one on FB and I thought I would jump into the pool. The only stumbling block was my hand photo displacement. When I tried to use the displacement PS told me it had to be 8 bit. One tweak later and I was on my way. Thank you for keeping all of us creative

You are certainly one of the best out there for tutorials. You're clear, don't say "ummm..." much if at all and get to the point swiftly without making me feel "Wait...what'd you say? What's going on?" Great job.

Depends on the flag you use and it's pixel rate so be careful and make sure you use a high res picture. I also found that using curves gives you more control over the tonal range of the hand. Thanks Gav, great tut I learned something today and thats what it's all about! 5-stars.
