Hey there Harmin! I was retelling the story to my daughter today of how she had relative who escaped from Alcatraz & saw you made this video. Harold Brest was my Grandfather’s cousin. They all grew up in Brookfield, OH which is right on the border of Sharon. A hot bed for gangsters from Youngstown, OH. I researched the story when I lived in San Francisco in the late 90s. Sure enough my Grandpa wasn’t lying. They had the same name. 😂 My Grandmother told me that Harold got out of prison & turned his life around. He was a custodian for a local church. She said he was a nice guy! 🎉My Grandpa used to take me as a little kid to all the bars where the gangsters hung out such as the Wolf Hound tavern. He also told me a story about meeting Baby Face Nelson. I live 3 blocks from that cemetery. I did not know he was buried there! Thank you! Escape attempt #7.
Great story Harmin, very well narrated, love the history of Alcatraz and the inmate stories. Those joint grave markers around Harold Breast, those appear to be his siblings and their own spouses the way they are arranged. I could be wrong. Siblings buried jointly on shared markers, two each, isn't very common unless it is an entire family. Again, Great video, so enjoyed it.
Thanks for updating your viewers on the history of Alcatraz, Harmin. I was not aware of this story myself. That must've been quite a chase. Officially no one has ever escaped from there and it's not hard to imagine why. Would love to tour it someday.
Hi Harmin, did some research on my Ancestry app regarding Harold Brest. Looks like he died 1979 at Alcatraz. Located him 1920 cenus his mother Bertha and father Martin listed as well as siblings. Harold was 6yrs old. 1940 census Harold is 26yrs residing with his father (head of household)and other family members members. Dyer act is listed as one of the crimes which made auto theft a federal crime 10-29-1919. Also the kidnapping and. Bank robbery.
I have watched your channel for a couple of years and your content is always interesting. I am from California and have good memories of going to Alcatraz when they first opened for tours. Back then the rangers were the tour guides. I remember talking to one of the former inmates who had written a book about his time in the Rock. At that same visit there was also a lady who was a daughter to a guard and had also written a book of her years living there. So I am very fascinated to see any videos and listen to any stories that are about Alcatraz. My parents purchased a book about the history of Alcatraz and I remember reading that book over and over. Thank you for this story, I had not heard it before.
I knew I recognized the name, Floyd Hamilton, read a lot about Bonnie and Clyde. I have been to Alcatraz very peaceful, but I could leave. Can’t imagine being there permanently but also can’t imagine swimming the bay.
Good to see you again Harmin... You're too cute how you are walking- (slightly outta breath)- and narrating at the same time. And I used to get aggravated with ya on trying to keep up on the details of the story, you're all over the place sometimes, and I'd be talking at ya (talking at my phone) lol... Edit: bottom line, I love your channel! You are too darned cute 🤗 You do a great job!🤍 it was awesome seeing a notification from you walla go! I was like, Yaassss..finally ☺️. Thank you Harmin. Alot of work goes into your videos, and I appreciate the good content! Thank you for sharing with us You-Tubers 👍💯🤍🥰
Interesting story. I too, am a big fan of Alcatraz stories It's just fascinating to hear how the prison functioned in the early years and also about the inmates Thanks Harmin..nice to see you back 😍
Yes you can do more men from that prison or anything else. I enjoy how you present your videos also loved your live chat today also with your parents dog!
Awesome! I will certainly do more from Alcatraz. I also want to get permission to film the abandoned prison in wa state but not sure who to contact. Trying to make that happen hopefully. Thanks lisa!
Thank you Harmon for this awesome video a friend of mine and myself both had never heard of this Escape before we had heard of one but not this one please continue doing these types of videos they're very enlightening and interesting you be careful out there
Good one Harmin it is very interesting to hear about the past especially from Alcatraz prison .I saw the prison from afar in California. Very eerie looking prison. Take care on your journey,🌞
I went on a tour of Alcatraz in 1999. I toured the island and the entire facility. I was shown Al Capone's jail cell # 181 and the bathtub he used to bathe in when he was suffering from syphilis.
My dad went to see Alcatraz as a tourist. I have a shirt that has the name reading, “Bed and Breakfast with a view”. It’s so old and tattered, but I can’t get rid of it!
This was a very interesting video. Thank you for your research! Harold Brest was my great uncle. Bessie (Brest) Davis, his sister, was my paternal grandmother. I remember Harold from family get togethers as a kid and recall him being very engaging and funny. I was 14 when he passed. I didn't find out until much later that he had this history. I can confirm that he did not die in prison. He died of cancer. I can also confirm that Mollie Brest was Ollie Brest's wife. Kenneth Brest was another brother. I wish I knew more of the family history. My father passed in 2018. It's sad that we don't ask more questions when we're young and have the family resources around. I can remember watching a program on PBS early in the 90's and saw the story about Harold's escape attempt (along with others at Alcatraz) and when they mentioned his name and put his photo on screen, I almost fell off my chair!
This is my great uncle. Been to Alcatraz to see where he lived for a period of time. He was pardoned when the prison was shut down. Heard some stories from one of the old guards and have some more background from the family.. definitely some interesting stories about him.
I have a hard time seeing people doing crimes and wanting to escape. When on the loose they just go on to do more crimes. Behind bars is where they belong, Thanks Harmin and safe travels.
Hermin I think they based the film soggy bottom boys on this I'm not sure 🤔 🇮🇪 greetings from ireland x I really enjoyed this thankyou 😊 sorry I got film name rong ..it was called brother where art thy xx the prisoners sang the song and they called them self's the soggy bottom boys .🙂🙃
I'm related to some people with the last name brest, my mother's side of family was crazy. they were all Irish and came over to Ellis Island as immigrants.their last names were Malone
The captain that was captured and gagged with the other guard was Henry H. Weinhold. He would later be involved in the 1946 Battle of Alcatraz three years later. He was captured by inmates, held hostage, and shot/injured along with eight other guards.
I love that movie, Harmin should do a video on him. If there wasn’t a post office in the store he was trying to steal food for his sister he wouldn’t have gone to Alcatraz.
Harold Brest died in Sharon Pa in 1979 I am very shore of this he was a very good friend of mine he was full of a lot of stories about 59 years old when I ment Harold we worked together at Perrine Oils Company in Hermitage Pa that's how I no he did not pass in prison He was a really nice personI would talk all night with the gentleman
Can't remember if I posted this before but I met a former inmate at Alcatraz in the early '90s who was doing a book signing. Didn't buy the book just saw him outside and asked where the cell house tour is. My mind was all over the place and I said I brought my camcorder to make a video. He said there are a lot of interesting things to see here. I asked his age and he said he's 74 (75?). I brought up the riot and he said, " I was in the middle of it whooo!" Then he left. Wish I could remember his name and I believe he used to be a kidnapper.
I noticed that the kidnapping of the two daughters by Brest were the daughters of William Whitla who himself had been kidnapped at age 8 and returned to his parents. Do you know the outcome of the two daughters that Brest kidnapped? How horrible for Whitla!
Harold was let out of prison and went to live in Sharon worked for his brother Olie and live with his brother Sylvin (Jake) and was a janitor at the Presbyterian church in Sharon he died in Sharon
Ollie n Mollie were siblings n married each other? Their headstone says Wed in 1938. I'm guessing Ollie was a Brest n married Mollie who was his girlfriend or fiance. What do you think?? Great video ICL. Alcatraz's population is interesting. They came from all kinds of backgrounds n financial status but in the end.......well, if they die at the prison, they end up all the same. Doesn't Alcatraz have a cemetery where they bury those who family doesn't claim them n they just have a number? Seems I heard that somewhere. Thank u for sharing ur video. Great job!!
Found out his first stint in Alcatraz was 1937 to 1939. Second stint was 1941 onward.
👍🇬🇧
Thanks for the videos!

Interesting to know that one of the inmates was Bonnie and Clyde's friend. Thank you for that!
Floyd Hamilton was Bonnie and Clyde's driver. That's how they knew each other.
My dad went to see Alcatraz as a tourist. I have a shirt that has the name reading, “Bed and Breakfast with a view”. It’s so old and tattered, but I can’t get rid of it!

Hi Harman from Alberta, Canada. Good video as always!
More Alcatraz stories Harmon!
Awesome!! Will make sure to do more then. 👍😀
Mollie was Ollie's wife. On the headstone, there's an inscription with a wedding bell and "Wed 1938".
