Hikaru dont forget that the questions are for them not you....and not everybody watches your recap. Youre taking it to personal
He was saying for general audience perspective not exclusively for hikaru' audience only.
Those questions are not good questions to be asked based on historical wc conferences also, at that time better questions were asked !!!
I find this really interesting that Hikaru didnt find f6 to be tricky at all. Magnus in his recap thought that it was the best practical chance, and says he heavily praised the move after he saw it. Furthermore Stockfish considers it to be the best move on depth 44
Yeh Hikaru can be a bit arrogant sometimes...
@@Valyxn yeah every commentary I watched said f6 is a very good defensive resource
It's a tricky move for humans. But definitely not what stockfish wants.
@@xx765lol a bit is an understatement
lol Hikaru wrecked
I completely agree that Ding should have a translator, all his answers in Chinese are perfect and precise, not as simple (even as 'chilling') as the answers in English. I also believe that he has tried his best to answer these questions, but the language limits his performance.
Guys Gukesh is just 18 , have some sympathy for him. The mindset is more important to get the title if you are hesitant to say you outplayed your opponent how can you get out of the negativity that you were not able to convert the game. That will crush your confidence and you can lose the rest of the games so I think gukesh should be confident.
Ya hikaru is just salty
He obviously outplayed him even after the prep just didn’t convert it
W for gukesh
All the ding comments are from South East asian muslim countries and neighbours who hate india and not like Indians. Don't take it too seriously
Confidence is not equal to objectivity. Confidence is nice.. but definitely not what he should focus on. You can have all of the confidence in the world, but it is meaningless if you are constantly mis evaluating your position due to this confidence in your play.
ps I made this comment before I saw Hikaru make this same exact point... but it is not wrong.
@@Lamentor219 of course his only focus is not confidence ?!? What the heck kinda statement is that ?
You make no sense
@@Lamentor219 But the thing is he was better at that point, and not to forget he had to make 8-10 moves when he had to decline the bishop trade and to many pieces on board makes it hard to calculate on low time, that is why he said he was better at that point that's what I think, he will not explain all this in press.
One thing is clear that gukesh is looking to win every game rn whether he has black or white pieces. This could well cause his downfall or we might see him absolutely crushing ding. One thing is clear that ding is better than guki when time is less and guki is better in opening
Gukesh just has a better team than Ding. That's why he's always on prep by move 20. It's not necessarily Gukesh being better.
@@MasterInHD nah he outplayed the whole match except time trouble
@@MasterInHDSee it's not like its all about his team. Yeah they play a part but certainly gukesh has better calculation during the opening and middle game. Like even if gukesh is not winning he is the aggressor if that make sense. We all know ding is playing for tie break anyways..
I would say it's harder to win when the opponent is trying to draw instead of winning and goes full defensive. Chess as a game to win one has to beat both the opponents chance to win and also draw.
whats ur elo 200?? they have been playing since u were not even born
watching whole 50 mins video just to see hikaru's face when Mike Klein asks a question. Immortal stuffs.
thank for your sacrifice, timestamp?

Wasting 50 minutes just for one scene, but that’s a risk I’m willing to take

Thoughts from a casual chess fan:
1) Don't underestimate the importance of GM Rapport on Ding's team. Their experience from the previous championship can only help in the 2nd half of this match. And I sense Ding is getting more confident & relaxed.
2) Gukesh deserves to be a slight favorite. He has been much more stable in his play. Will this continue in week 2 as the games become more critical? My guess is yes. He has shown maturity beyond his years.
3) Ding has 4 games left with the white pieces. Can Ding find a way to put pressure on Gukesh in Game 8?
this maurice guy read stockfish moves and acts like he can see it in real game wtf .
Stfu bro's teach stockfish chess.
Hes a hustler who faked his rating 11 years ago and never played a game since. The atmosphere somber. He should be banned from chess commentating.
@@lysidplontger3980 How did he fake his rating?
What are referring you to? It doesn’t seem like he’s acting like it’s his own calculation at all, obviously he’s using a computer engine to determine and discuss the best move. As Hikaru says, that is how chess discussions go in the modern era (for better and for worse)
@@lysidplontger3980was he not a gm
Poor Gukesh, I feel bad for him, things don't go as expected and he seems not to play as ggod as for the candidate !
Bro swear he's not gonna make the same mistake twice
Its not like ding won championship bro its a draw
Hikaru is turning into magnus’s pet “unintentionally “ when he talks, using him to downgrade the level of the players here as he can’t compare himself considering he could not even win the candidates. As mourinho said Respect, Respect,Respect.
+1
People who are criticizing the quality of this WC 2024 - Only one thing - why couldn't you or your favorites qualify for the WC? Everybody had equal chance right. So please shutup and watch or don't..
Very intellectual and brilliant 😳
People asking the questions also didn't qualify, so your comment makes no sense at all.
@@sukhmandersingh4306 just like your life
Just one more question: ¿Why didn´t you play like stockfish?
Bro what is with the upside down question mark you using?
@@agentraydg839
English:
Hello?
Spanish:
¿Hola?
I don't know why mixed languages but its basically a question
In my opinion, since Gukesh's first language is not English, he sometimes falters in his choice of words. He might have intended to refer to his better chess opening instead of using the term "outplayed."
I wonder why Hikaru never won world championship or even candidates
With his attitude, I doubt he ever will.
U yourself said he was out of prep early then saying he is only better due to prep and ding is outplayed him
Man just don’t be salty after that candidate loss
😂😂
Do you even understand what happened in the game? Ding had to avoid playing the best move b5 because he’d get smoked by gukesh‘s prep, so he decided to go c5, knowing that he’ll be in a worse position but getting gukesh out of prep. so he was out of prep early but still had a way better position due to his prep, which he didn’t convert cause ding defended brilliantly today and kinda outplayed gukesh (today)
@@vincent04 I mean opening advantage was 0.3 which is draw but it spirals into a massive 1.7 or more
Can’t be prep
@@vincent04 he was plus 5 at my deep engine
@@athiestperson5947 from a human perspective it’s definitely more than 0.3 I feel like, because he had far easier moves. also, gukesh played a really really well until got a bit low on time. I mean he should’ve converted if he really was +5 right
Hikaru is overrating so much
I don't find it painful to watch Ding answering in English. He is not being forced to, he has the option of a translator but he doesn't mind managing without it and just getting clarification from Maurice here and there. His english is improving and although he misses the essence of certain questions, it's wonderful to just watch him try and share with us wonderfully simple, honest and yet still profound commentary on his games and thoughts. Anyone mocking his English, thats certainly bullying, but i like to think most of us just love hearing him out.
Those americans who doesnt know the language is not hindi , india has 23+ national languages , people are bilingual or english + 2 speakers , those who are educated in english medium +2 , so please dont call indian language , its tamil
Mentioning "educated" feels a bit weird, there are millions in central and north India who are by definition educated but don't speak english. In many of my conferences to NITs and IITs, I have met many brilliant students and professors who know bare minimum english.
@@SSW777 yeah language doesn't define intelligence😅
But I think he was talking about people making prejudices
No one cares
@@SSW777 As an Indian, I disown that guy.
@@SSW777 ok my bad , i should be saying , english medium environment
Hikaru, your stepfather is SriLankan, you have played with so many Indian players, you should figure out by now that when Indians speak English like in this case ‘ I outplayed him ‘or I was much better than my opponent its not necessarily cause he is cocky. It’s because they are just looking at the literal meaning and not how people will perceive what they are saying since English is not their first language.
Cringe ? Wtf
It is cringe lmao
Probably to the reporter's questions
Clickbait
I mean gukesh is Indian so his presence itself is cringe
Listen to 26:00 that's cringe
Was waiting for it
Watching press conference with your commentary is the best part for each match
Hikaru just blasting gukesh here at anything he is saying, preparation is also him, you don’t just play 20 moves of prep because your team gave it to you in your hand, so much salt, what a jealous pineapple.
If gukesh had better prep than ding, also had a better position at many points of time and still got a draw, then yes ding outplayed gukesh. Simple math.
@@boxofcans461 doesn’t better position means Gukesh outplayed ding? Not capitalising on it is different. Hikaru played ding in candidates last time , he had an edge and failed to convert else ding might not have been wc. Hikaru is good but he is not at the same level or has stamina to compete at top level.
@@atul2727 you can say that gukesh has better preparation than ding, but ding being the more experienced player is stronger. But in the end either player can win the match.
Better position out the opening is better preparation, drawing a losing (-5?) position is either outplaying your opponent or you can call it your opponent failing to convert. Either way I'm happy we're getting fireworks when Gukesh plays white, kudos to both of these champions. @atul2727
@ he had an edge from preparation in opening, but the way he build on it was amazing . A mistake doesnt mean outplayed. The engine was showing him better for a very long time , even magnus was uncertain in his review. Yeah gukesh with white is looking for results, lets see what ding has up his sleeve today
At 18, Hikaru couldn’t even win a single game against GM Surya Ganguly. Just saying…
At 36, double Gukesh’s age, he couldn’t win a single candidates… now that’s cringe, maybe!
Just being salty as gukesh beat him to the race this time, maybe his last chance to get to winning candidates🔥
I don't understand how is Gukesh arrogant when Ding himself said that he was outplayed in all phases of the game that you yourself seem to agree with.
Ding said Gukesh was “better prepared” / had more accurate preparation. Ding also noted he had better positions at some point a in the game and that he should have more confidence. Gukesh on the other hand didn’t attribute to good prep until Re1 question was asked and just said he was “outplaying” his opponent - this isn’t true when you’ve memorised like top 20 moves in a barely played opening…
Gukesh used the F word
At this point Hikaru should take Ding's place in the Press conference and answer for him. My guy Hikaru, you need to chill! Hhahahaha!
Ding had prepared greatly , and he will deliver his strategies on appropriate occasion like today happened. I am predicting something aggressive tactics can occur in next match.
I am sure he is just testing Gukesh and how hard he can build pressure on opponent .
But I really want Gukesh to win this championship and create history.
Everything is cringe for him unless magnus is in it😂(press conferences are usually bad but this one was not extreme bad)
Yep. I really hate when they keep using the computer lines.
Why everyone saying that f6 was a mistake?? According to sesse it was the best move in the position..
it says Rd5 +2.57 and f6 +2.99, so f6 isn't the best - although the arrow points it like it's the best move
Magnus said it was the best move
Because those people only know how to play chess by watching the engine
IMO it's pretty clear Ding is the better player, but he is out of form. The second Ding is forced to operate on his instincts, he starts destroying Gukesh. It almost feels like DIng is holding this match together on minimal prep, while Gukesh may be showing signs of overprep.
I mean Ding's peak rating is 2816 and Gukesh's is 2796.
Also Gukesh is known for his calculation abilities while Ding is more intuitive and has been lazy calculating the past year and regularly settles for draws.
Ding looks better than he did earlier in 2024 probably because he's prepped so much and has less nerves.
Also I think the time control is shorter than other classical tournaments
I thought that Ding did not crumble under pressure altogether, so that was impressive. So this is not going to be very straight forward for Gukesh as I expected it to be. He can not miss these sort of opportunities. This will also effect Gukesh until and unless he gets ahead in the match. This was psychological victory for Ding because of the result.
Magnus loved F6 from a practical perspective because it made finding the win very hard, and what Gukesh says pretty much confirms that.
When Maurice showed those moves and asked Gukesh "did you consider this biship G5 move?" Gukesh's face is basically pure shock, he really thought he had like a tiny advantage and the eval bar made it clear that he was just flat winning and he couldn't see it at the board.
I don't think Ding is over performing, he is playing his game. Gukesh IS under performing though and the pressure of the match/moment is clearly affecting him.
Fun Fact: Hikaru telling the champions not to use the engine while analysing. That's exactly what he's doing which makes much less sense cause it distracts amateurs even more.
You make no sense brother wtf 😭
Here is context: Hikaru said they shouldn't be using engine while analysing as they tend to change what they were thinking, without engine they would be more honest what was in their mind without actually seeing it on engine
But for us as audience we are supposed to use engine including us and hikaru 😶🌫️
@@PixelPioneer37 so you think we are able to understand why the engine goes up or down? 😂😂
@@ferdinandhelbing3351 Yes, we may not fully understand at first sight but with hikaru explaination it's understandable lowkey...😂
But it's not about us.... Its about them and what they think should be portrayed honestly that is the topic and point 😭
Have fun ;)
@@PixelPioneer37 The problem is: "they" are humans too! It's a game for humans. And once we aim for perfection, it becomes completely boring and has to become quicker and quicker in order to be able to laugh about human imperfection. These engines simply destroy the game.
@@ferdinandhelbing3351 It was about honesty and the pure assesment of what they were considering... Nobody sàid perfection is needed ¡!!
44:15 Nemo:Do you have any pregame routine
Gukesh: Puzzle rush is nice to do
Ding: I get up take shower and drink coffee
Bro literally is just a chill guy😎😎
Mate, you're just so cringe to being a sheeple memester for just the sake of it. Gukesh was specifically asked about puzzle rush and he was honest about it. If Ding was such a chill guy, he wouldn't be offering early draws while the actual chill guy was accepting potentially slight worse positions in his own admissions to just play chess in his own words and as per what actually happened.
@_sayan_roy_ it's not that deep
Ding always play defensive game and he is chill guy??😂😂bro is defensive even on white .. imagine if gukesh played a defensive game today
I disagree with Hikaru. They should always show the bar. The bar surpasses all analysis which could be wrong. Both are good together
Yes but than that would be more honest what was going on their mind while they were playing else they may distracted or may say something which they didn't thought of seriously... Imo that would would be more honest that was point th
Human analysis is more important for humans. You can do engine analysis after human analysis.
Agree that we feel ding is performing well because gukesh is slightly underperforming and not able to find the correct move in a apt time. Gukesh is trying to win every game and in that he. Is making mistakes. Ding only trying to draw as a part of the strategy and he is achieving that.
Reporter asks a question
Hikaru: Ohhh myy goddd!! I literally said this in my recap video!
Really interesting that Magnus thought f6 was an excellent practical try, and Hikaru thought it was a huge mistake
On the journalist asking a question you covered in recap: sometimes a journalist needs to ask obvious questions just to get on record the words of the actual person involved. I'm sure he knows the answer, but he wants a quote from Ding he can put in his article later. His editor isn't paying him for his opinions, but to gather news and write about it.
Same with the guy who asked about b5. Again, the question might infuriate you as a GM level player, but most of the audience aren't and may wonder about it. All your explanation about trying to avoid being drawn into your opponent's prep is exactly the answer the journalist wants Ding to give. It doesn't matter how obvious it is to you; it's not obvious to everyone and even if it is, it's still worth asking to get it as a quote from the player. You have to remember that GMs don't form most of the audience watching this.
18:00 Was waiting for this reaction.. Gold
Maurice Ashley always makes interviews cringe.
Engines should basically be taken out of professional commentary. Just spoils the whole thing. (Ok, maybe sometimes check it to see what's what, but super sparingly)
The problem is that even the pros do not understand the reasons behind some engine moves. If the pros cannot explain the engine moves then they should not show them so that the audience is not disappointed.
@@stanleywang8524 Most engine moves can be understood even by non master players but it requires players to play through various lines which makes it messy for use in commentating. It's more interesting and more educational not having constant engine analysis which kills many instructional things strong GMs might say
@@Deditio So what are you saying is that the engine lines often look too far ahead to be mentioned in a commentary which I agree. However, for someone like Magnus who is really strong, he can play almost like the engine. Magnus can rationalize the decision behind his move over the board and will be able to explain (hopefully fairly succinctly) in a commentary. Preparing a good commentary based on engine line will take time and I think part of the problem is that the commentators do not have sufficient time to study the engine lines before giving commentary.
2:36 f6 was the top engine move, magnus even praised f6 saying it's not obvious why f6 is so good but it makes it a lot harder for white
I have noticed that whenever Ding answered in his native language he always smiled.
Yeah Gukesh outplayed Ding in the opening and middlegame thats a fact
Even if its a prep still Gukesh outplay ing Ding. Ding has the same time as Gukesh to prepare thats a factual statement
Can't Hikari reduce his mic volume to match the livestream's volume?
ya. actually I love Hikaru's streams but he says almost everything 2x... rainman
Maybe Maurice should set the engine to around 2800. Stockfish is over 3000 that suggests moves no human will find 💀
not even 3000, stockfish is close to 4000 and both of the players are 2800 level.
@@ArmaghanBashir-d7nno stockfish is only a little bit more than 3500
Current stockfish is 3642, thats just like 800 elo higher than any super grandmaster
@@JacopoBerzeatti10800 elo in high level games is a huge difference..
every 10 seconds into video -> is there a problem with audio you guys? Me looking for that audio problem like Gukesh looked for the win in game 7
"Sounds like you're a glass half full type of person."
Gukesh: sorry?
Ding is super humble in contrast to Hikaru. Hikaru is dreadful
I don't think Gukesh has lost objectivity - it's just the nature of these questions at the press conferences. What's he suppose to say? "ya I f'd up after a strong opening. ya I f'd up after a strong opening". over and over they ask the same question - why did you f- up? how did you feel when you f'd up? It's natural to project confidence at a press conference- doesn't mean it's how he really feels. Give the kid a break.
Hikaru crashing out on Maurice because he thinks the players are 3500 engines is hilarious 13:50 😂🤣
8:16 ding’s face- when mom comes home after a long day at work and asks who cleaned the dishes
This was a great game for Ding... fighting all the way. 'Outplayed my opponent quite easily in the opening..' has to hurt Ding though with that comment.
i mean ding knows it isnt true and he Is Better than gukesh
@@snide1574 I mean its objectively true that Ding got outplayed in the opening.
Press Conference is psychological warfare. Ding isn't mellow in press either. His voice is low, words are quite the same. Have watched all press this wcc.
@@Phoenix.219 he doesnt know english well
33:40 interesting cause Magnus seemed to understand and even gave an explanation for time usage by Ding on certain moves - he felt this was just the way things go in a World Championship (source: take take take recap)
What's really cringe about this are the comments on the top left.
Subtitles????
Please add Subtitles otherwise it's very problematic to understand what you are saying
When Maurice was born, do you think he cried or did he monotonously state his arrival?
Hikaru for his part shows a complete misunderstanding for how journalism works.
Hot takes : i think Ding has been eating too much ice cream he lost his voice 💀
I don't think Magnus will 10/10 if he plays the game. It's easy to say and make these comments, and while Magnus is arguably the best player it is not like he is unbeatable. He has been beaten many times in the past and will continue to be, so making very strong statements keeping Magnus' name is best avoided, although I get the point that is being made.
The 2016 championship is a good example. Magnus, rated 2850, has to push for a win in game 10 just to force tiebreaks
You know, this kind of situation happened in tennis for a couple of years where the young kids outperformed EVERY OTHER PLAYER in every other tournament, and then they’d make it to the finals of the grand slams and lose to Novak, especially in the case of Tsitsipas and Ruud. It’s kind of the same thing going on here with Gukesh. I think it also goes back to what Vishy said about Gukesh during the Candidates tournament which is that “he had much bigger swings in his performances”
I totally agree about "computer lines" comparison is ruining Chess, especially at high level ! You can't compare a real game on a fisical chessboard and mental pressure with lines that come from chess engines ! It's about time that they ban this kind of analysis from tournaments and use chess engines only for educational / prep purpose. Anyway, I'd like to say hallo to GM Hikaru, your viedos are great !
Happy that hikaru will never be in that place...keep winning titled Tuesday
Can we discuss Ding issue? I sent you a direct message on Instagram. I get it that you may not want Ding to win, but I think if Ding is to lose this, he should lose fairly not because of a psychological issue. So while I understand your reasoning I think you guys take this the wrong way.
So I will come with evidence on Ding issue so we can bring awareness to this problem.
Give the guys a break. Ding is a world champion and Gukesh has already proved himself by winning the candidates.
Bruh, magnus said f6 was the best try and even engine said it was the top move, lol 😂
Ding was chilling too much while doing prep.
Ding probably didn't study from the same kinds of books as chess players in the west. Even today it's hard to find chess books in China; when he was a kid, the options were probably even thinner. When I want a chess book, I either find an illegal download or order an expensive import title that takes a few weeks to arrive. When Ding was 10 years old, I'm not sure there would have been any way to do that.
on which app hikaru was live reacting to this??
Like, in game, looking at the wacky computer line is fun and good for learning, but throwing it in a players face after a game like this is just very rude and kind of defeats the point of the interview which is to get a look at their thought process.
13:30 100% agree
F6 was brilliant. Was best move stockfish with depth 44.
Even magnus praised the move, called it peak ding.
Hikaru gives analysis without analyzing.
Guys I can speak a new language apparently, Indian! On top of English, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Sanskrit, and now INDIAN😂
I really believe the over optimistic comments by Gukesh are part of the plan from team Gukesh and he has been instructed to be a certain way to apply psychological pressure on Ding!
Late boomer hikaru
I wish people would realize they're speaking to non-native players and adjust their English to their level. Maurice uses unnecessarily difficult words and rambling sentence structures and several of the questions were similar. That guy near the end who said "a general consensus among the punditry" might as well have been speaking another language entirely as far as Ding's concerned. There's no way he knows that vocabulary. People use big words for their own egos, when the goal is to communicate effectively.
I wonder what Maurice would have answered to the question, what do you do before bed? 😂
20:55 hey Ding! How come all your moves aren’t 3 seconds long brah?
I used to watch gotham chess before this event . But now I watch yours videos because now I realise that levi’s video has more drama than reviews😅.and also not precise.
Same, also because Hikaru posts press conference commentary which is more interesting to watch than the game itself
Honestly I want any top player to help ding in his preparation so he can play his moves quickly as gukesh...then ding will perform better in middle game and in the end game
Could not agree more about the Stockfish moves being put in their faces. It diminishes how good they played
This is the last video I'll be watching till the tournament ends. Hikaru's attempt to downplay Gukesh, and lift Ding is so open for everyone to see.
Looks like Hikaru is still sour after losing to Gukesh at the Candidates.
Hikaru has unbelievable hair considering he is almost 40. I would love to see his hair routine.
hikaru, gukesh and any indian player never come ego on there way, it is too inherent in us, so gukesh not have ego or something, he is tired and looking to make opportunity in next day and thinking about to be calm and do something rest and talk to team, i think gukesh dont care about statement or anything when gukesh was favourite, he say i dont care , i will try 100% to give by fight and now also he says i dont care, i will give my 100% FIGHT, so he literally dont care not means in ego, maybe as indian it is normal to explain things in that way that i dont care about this thing, in america maybe you think it's ego. And i think it's too early to say gukesh gonna lose, or ding gonna lose, i will say that it's world championship matches and those who are saying that this is not the level of this championship, just stay away from it, if two are qualified and sitting in fide offical chair of clashes, with fighting in 50+ matches, tournament, candidates and other dont get near it, so keep quiet and focus on games. I dont know all these non sense come from. If bobby fisher playing right now, same people will troll him also, so it's so unfair in today's world to say or do anything. Hope gukesh dont care about anything and focus on everything around point
Holy yap
You don't speak for all Indians and I'd say you are brainwashed about what you are told your culture is.
Hikaru you understand Chinese language?
I am new to chess but this one of my huge turn offs while watching chess. The commentators often use stockfish to analyze games in realtime and speak in extremes. They see the bar jump in the middle game and speak as if its over or someone made a huge mistake. I just dont see those instances as accurate because, like hiki said, were hoomans.
What are you doing after the games before you go to bed? Answer: Usually relaxing and having dinner, then i might hit the strip club for a little bit, a couple whiskey shots, maybe a little gambling....... Like wtf kind of question is this?
Magnus himself said its not obvious win😂 u say he wins 10 /10 that dude drew 14 games with fabi
First of all 12 games and yes he would have won 10/10 as he is the Greatest endgame player of all time
Hikaru got no chill. He is so mad which is really enjoyable. He would rather be at the conference.
22:57 The press has translators but the defending champion isn't given one?

He is promoting the take take take app which also shows it as best move.
