    Arches paper is much cheaper in the US. I can get an 11x14 12 page pad for $16 or so. I cut the pages in half and make my own 5.5x7" watercolor sketchbooks.

    check out Strathmore Ready Cut watercolor paper. It is 100% cotton as part of their 500 line of artist papers and has excellent reviews. I love this paper and sizes range from less than $8 for the 5x7 bundle of 25 sheets to about $15 for the 11 x 14 bundle of 6 sheets on Amazon. I do not like the Fabriano Studio for watercolor painting but I purchased it for $6 a pad at our craft store A.C.Moore for my grandchildren to use with gouache.

    Hi Teoh, you made an excellent point about the M.Graham watercolors, or any honey-based watercolors for that matter. If you buy the tube colors and try to put them in a metal or plastic pallette they won't "set" properly and in my experience you are better off either buying empty pans and filling them or, if the paint is available in pan form, such as Sennelier, buy them that way. I happen to love honey-based based watercolors and am partial to Senneliers a few Russian and other brands.

    • @vangogo6819
      @vangogo6819 5 лет назад

      @Yasmine S. Hi Yasmine, I did not know this, I thought it was the honey. I have been curious about Schminke, maybe I should have asked for the smallest most affordable set instead of the Sennelier eh? I am still thrilled to be getting my gift( for my birthday). I just ordered from Jackson's and figure it will get here in time for my birthday which is not for a few weeks yet. I know we all have different thoughts on paint preference in any medium, do you prefer tube watercolors over pans or just with certain brands? Thanks, Linda (Vangogo).

      @vangogo6819 5 лет назад

      @Yasmine S. Hi Yasmine, thank you so much for your helpful tips! I do mostly sketchbook painting now and so for that prefer whatever is the best that I can afford, I do seem drawn to pans for on the go sketching and I like tubes for at home but where I live now is very small so I have had no choice but to keep as little as possible and be practical. I appreciate your input, I find it helpful and fun to discuss these things. Have a good day, Linda

    Affordability is definitely a thing with watercolors. I started out with Cotman colors last year, which are very affordable and easy to justify if you aren't sure that you are committed to doing the medium. Since then I've stitched to Rembrandt and Schmincke, which are pretty pricey but I decided I really enjoy watercolor and I felt the better quality would keep me motivated. It's helpful that you have posted some more affordable options as I am not sure that I can continue these prices over the long term. I'd also recommend Caron d'Arch watercolor crayons. I've used them for years. They come in tin boxes of various sizes and can also be purchased singlely. They are so fun and provides really rich color that can be layered over cheap, student grade watercolors. I like them for looser work in particular.

    I always wanted to buy these good quality items. Unfortunately they don't sell them in my country, they are very hard to find (and when you do find them the price makes it impossible to buy). I tried importing stuff from foreign websites before but my country's taxes policy for imported items makes it unviable to purchase them. They charge 200% tax over the items price (yes, believe me...), so you pretty much buy 1 for the price of 3.... 😑 And on top of that you add the currency exchange rate and you simply give up buying anything... I got used to using "not so good" brands or student quality stuff (we don't find the professional stuff around here) and actually paying a small fortune for them.... it is so disappointing.... We can only get good stuff for a fair price when we go abroad and bring them ourselves...

    Great video! Also in the USA we have Michael's art stores where you can use 50-60% off coupons that can be used on Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton Professional watercolor paints. Along with Arches watercolor paper pads, they also sell the Bee watercolor paper that I love. Great video Teoh.

    Excellent suggestions! I like the Silver Black Velvet brushes. They do come in travel variety, but Dick Blick, etc. does have better prices for these, well my experience at least. I only do sketching no studio type drawings-- mostly use Strathmore 400 or Canson (not XL) smallish books (13x17 cm) because I travel with them. I also want to be able to rip out pages if I don't like something. I use DS paint, but started with Cotman and then gradually refilled my boxes (now I use Portable Painter which is very handy with the water carrying capacity).

    I did a side by side of the Cotmans and Daniel smith recently on Arches Cold Press. Some of the Cotmans are mis-named which can add to the confusion of thinking they are less pigmented. For example, Gombage Hue is actually Indian Yellow. Overall every colour I use most often (Phthalo Blue, Naples Yellow, Lemon Yellow Hue, [Indian Yellow], Prussian Blue, Indigo, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Rose) had better mixing and vibrancy attributes than Daniel Smith. It's not that they are less pigmented, they just don't spread as easily and their vibrancy is higher so they appear brighter than the a brand like Daniel Smith.
    I personally prefer more control over my paints so these attributes that you are siting as poor quality are actually the best parts of the paint and the reason I have never switched away from cotmans.

    • @MyCrimsonMischief
      @MyCrimsonMischief 5 лет назад +3

      Damain XI hello with respect there’s absolutely no way that a student grade paint is going to be more pigmented and easier to work with then artist grade paint. Student grade paint have so much fillers that make it less pigmented artist grade paint don’t have that.

    I wish I had found some of your lists before I went on a manic art supply shopping spree. Idiotically, it was your parallel pen review I did see (did buy them, they're awesome) but I wasn't aware then how much I would get into watercolor so I didn't pay much attention to your other videos (like a dummy).
    I just got myself a schmincke akademie set (12 half pans for approx 40 inclusive shipping) which isn't a horrible price. I'm soooo tempted to buy the white nights though. I'm actually eyeballing their fantasy pallette because the colors are almost exactly what I want and I wouldn't have to buy too many extra colors. Ugh. I just wish I hadn't thrown money out on cheap watercolors and supplies before. I just had the thought to try all mediums cheaply and when I settle then I can upgrade but I see that was a flawed thought process. Oh well. I'll probably still use my 48 ct pallette from hobby lobby. It's not horrible. Not great either though. I'm definitely liking the schmincke set so far but I figured I would, I'm german and I love german craftsmanship and quality, can't help myself. Thanks for all the research you put into your videos. They are so insightful (even after the fact 😂)

    I think the Daniel Smith "Essentials" watercolor set is a good buy if someone is looking for really good watercolor paint in a set that will mix any color you need. All the tubes are top lightfast except they did "sneak" in Hansa Yellow Light which is not quite maximum lightfast like the other tubes in the set. I don't know why Daniel Smith did that.
    So I bought a tube of Lemon Yellow. It's true this is more expensive than what Teoh Yi Chie is recommending, but I just wanted to let some people know about the set :)

      Depends on which paper from Bee Paper. The 100% cotton WC paper works well with watercolour. The other paper, even if thick, don't work well with watercolour techniques. Colours don't move much so it is difficult to blend colours or create gradients
