Interview with David Gilmour & Nick Mason Toronto Canada
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 апр 2019
- offers for the very first time, the second, unreleased, part of the footage, consisting of the unedited interviews with
(a very sarcastic) David Gilmour & Nick Mason, Robbie Williams and Morris Lyda. Further footage feature shots of the crew at work and more rehearsals.
I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shock both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well.
Very nice
Awesome!!!
What an amazing memory 👍🏼
You lucky bastard! (in a good way)
He must have been listening to Amen Corner...
Not many people who achieve that level of fame can still be so comfortable just being themselves. David has that vibe. I’ve watched and listened to all his interviews and he’s always the same, appearing to struggle to really care about the interview, but polite and willing to play along. He only gets uncomfortable when someone lays praise upon him. I like that kind of human.
Yes...so true...it's so refreshing to see real humility from someone of his caliber - great guy...he gives alot of money away to charities, as well - generous and down to earth.
What do you mean don’t really care about the interview ? I don’t see how you read all that into it ! I thought his interviews were very smooth and interesting and straightforward and a very real sense about it all
@@sambell385 I meant that instead of getting annoyed or being fake like most celebrities do in interviews, he’s just like, “hey, whatever, I’ll talk to your camera for a bit”. Being interviewed 1,000 times and being asked the same questions over and over can’t be a pleasurable experience. David acts like it’s no big deal and just rolls with it. I like that he doesn’t ever act like an asshole or pretentious d-bag in his interviews.
@@SumTingWong1482 Thanks brother for replying back I kinda got the sense that you didn’t mean that literal ! sorry if I came off sounding harsh it’s all good ! I love Pink Floyd theirmusic is more like some sort of ultimate experience✌️
I was blessed with the opportunity to meet David Nick and Rick Wright at the Division Bell / Pulse show in phoenix az in 94 to this day they are 3 of the nicest most down to earth guys I've ever met
David Gilmour is just gorgeous...back in the day and even now...
Oh yes... my dream this guy! loooooove him so much... even today!
Don’t get me started on the then-gorgeous David Gilmour! Ha!! Whoa!!
Now he's looking rough
@@edp3202 naw....he is now a silver fox!! I still think he is just drop dead gorgeous and his accent just makes him even more hotter :) Best of all he has a beautiful soul.
@@angelarthrasher I mean, I'd still be staring into his eyes if I met him, but in his 20s and 30s. Good Lord. Adonis.
7:30 they're so relieved that Roger's gone 😂😂 lmao
They are high on drugs or drunk or just having massive egos it’s one of the three in my opinion
No Waters no Floyd
@@rileyhhj9297 I don’t really like syd floyd era some songs are good but had he never joined floyd I don’t think we would gotten dark side of the moon you have to remember they were a rhythm and blues band before he came they were never going to get anywhere without him
@@alrimate3936 All three back then probably, Roger too, only his ego is double-sized.

I love the honesty in Dave. I also love how that one dudes job is make sure the pig is coloured right. He's just totally doing his best.
The whole video was very interesting, thanks for uploading.
One word--amazing!
What i would give to go back in time to 1987 and see this up close and in person.
Thank you for sharing this.
what i would give to be 17 again in 1977 ... oh, how those days were grand!!!
The very best concert I have ever seen. The"Learning To Fly" tour. 1987
These people are all so down to earth.I like seeing normal people and not egos in Rock and Roll industry. All trying to please the audience.
very cool 😎 👌
The sheer amount of effort put into the tour is mind bending. It's going to take alot to better the Pink Floyd live performance. Perfection.
I could listen to Dave Gilmour all day. Really Awesome to watch and listen to both David Gilmour and Nick Mason Interview together.
Their Talking Of Covering Other Renowned Musicians' Is A Great Compassion In 2024. 👍 from somewhere over there in Liverpool 🇬🇧 UK
Loving the analogue desks and big control units for the stage lighting. A spaghetti of cables and patch leads leading to desks with faders, nobs and buttons that light up.

@ 16:23 David talked about midi sampling as an amazing new technology at the time that made their job easier and was mainly used for demoing. Fast Forward 34 yrs later, 2021, sampling is being used everywhere, not for just demoing but for actual production.
Fantastic document of the band in the late 80s, thanks!!
What band?

6 März 2021 00:56 AM Happy Birthday Sir David Gilmour.
Long life SIR DAVID GILMOUR,
Hip Hip Hurra .... I Salut You 75. Birthday ....
Thank you so much for all of the Nite & Songs of Music that you have written
and that always bring joy to your fans around the world.
That's all I have to say
Very pragmatic, so professional. They just know their business inside out!
omg. i LOVE these guys and MISS those days. Gilmour's voice just melts my heart and i feel like i have come home.... Long Live the Pink Floyd
Have you ever heard the F word spoken so eloquently? :) I don't have an Iphone but if I did and used the Siri function, I would rather it be David's voice. I could listen to him speak all day, every day.
i almost blew coffee out my nose on the Rodgers gone comment lol
Kenco?

27:10 for the most iconic line of the whole interview
I agree, this hited the spot
he cooked like a guitarist there.
Very insightful remark from Mason about his laziness in school: He never learned to work and enjoy working. Like so many others bored to death in school
That was a fantastic tour- the production was top notch all around.
Anything that’s come close to the effort put in to making a great live performance, dare I say on par with Pink Floyd was Coldplay’s Ghost Stories concert, which was also in a hanger coincidentally. One of the best I’ve seen since Pulse.
Watching interviews like this remind me that Floyd could quite possibly be the most complete band in music history. Thanks for sharing. NA1974🇬🇧.
Man ah love david gilmour, i love the way he talks, he's so educated
So true! Nowadays we dont have people like this anymore !
David Gilmour is such an incredibly intriguing and a fascinating person! Pink Floyd is the most fascinating band I can think of!
After seeing the live performance of DSOTM on the pulse dvd bonus disc and having seen them live in 94 its my opinion that Waters wasnt too difficult to have someone fill his shoes for live shows! It"d be impossible I think of anyone who could substitutes for Gilmour though! For that matter Id pretty much say the same for wright & Mason as well!! There, I said it!!! Ok
@@richardchristensen1768 Roger Waters talent lies more in the writing of the floyd classic albums. Dave couldn’t write shit throughout the 70s when Floyd were at their peak but Waters is easily replaceable on stage because he’s not the greatest bass player which he will probably admit himself.
@@Eleventhearlofmars As one of the original Floyd founders, a "Pink Floyd" absent Waters -- is nothing at all -- except a group of extremely talented musicians playing some incredible songs -- a cover band of sorts. Ahem, what was that thing I saw about idiots?
@@Lulubelle.III. Thats just a load of bullshit, but im a good person, i'll let you keep your pitiful opinion.
Man. Two legends overall
I think my favorite part (aside from the comment at 27:10) was how embarrassed they both got about the "teenaged girls screaming" comment, and how they're not in competition with Bon Jovi! God, how hilarious!
This was posted in my birthday!

@@NeutrinoParty I can do that... now you try reading 🥸
And me, too! What's that about? I'm glad to hear it. I thought I was a weirdo. Lol!
I’m so glad they still had energy and ambition at this point. It would have been easier to roll over and let Roger win, but they did it because they wanted to.
It's all about the music. :)
Great interview. Original date of recording should be posted.
David is hilarious, love it
One thing I notice with many of PF's videos. The guy's hands are just so nice. For these 2 a guitarist and drummer their hands are so smooth looking.
No hard labor
when i hit david's age in this footage, i hope to achieve his awesome hair
He was still able to have good hair despite balding quite a bit, you can see the front hair is a single patch. But he still looked awesome.
@@easportsaxb8057 he managed to pull off balding very well for a while, not many people are able to
@@ArmanBaig yeah and I also appreciate his decision to have short hair in the 90s and then shave later on, he knew when to let the long hair go but when he did have the long hair he pulled it off real well
@@xyz.928 very true
They are so gracious and not full of themselves....and they put up with all the annoying page announcements. That in itself is impressive never mind that they are rock music giants. They even manage a funny quip about sampling a jet sound that happens in the back .
Had a chance to see Pink Floyd a number of times. NYC Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl and Saratoga, NY. At Saratoga I couldn't hear anything when they finished. Totally deaf. What scared me was the drive home with 1,000's of other cars on the road who were totally deaf as well. Carnegie Hall was a midnight concert. At the Hollywood bowl when we bought the tickets. We went inside and smoked a joint behind the control booth in the center of the Bowl. Two heads popped up and reached out to get a hit. It was Gilmore and Waters. They just took a few hits and passed it back to us. Didn't say anything and went on stage for a sound test. I couldn't believe I actually got stoned with Pink Floyd.
These guys are geniuses in the music world.
I like your sense of humor 🤣
The two geniuses had left the band. The band folded shortly after that :)
@@MrWomax eh?!
Roger Waters is the genius.
@@Eleventhearlofmars The two geniuses (Syd and Roger) had [already] left the band. The band (with remaining, untalented members) folded shortly after that (three albums later). Better? :) I tend to say half of the thought thinking the rest passed as well.
"Telephone call for Clive Brooks, a telephone call for Clive Brooks."
He was Nick's drum tech and actually played two of the Wall shows when the second drummer Willie Wilson fell ill.
@@ThomasHinde123 Literally fell ill. He collapsed during preparations.
This was in Toronto pearson Airport where they set up stage and gear did several months of rehearsals. Dave, his wife Polly - Rick and his wife rented house few blocks from my home located on lake promenade rd off lakeshore rd in Ontario
years b4 cell phones,Had to use page announcements
LOL My man Dave ! love these guys !
1:09:06. So, that's where the idea for "Coming Back to Life" came from. :)
Good catch!!!
Actual musician questions/answers, not the usual too cool for the room shit other bands tend to do.
His voice sounds so good
Love that Charvel Dave is playing at the end
I think David Gilmour matured quite late on in life. He’s certainly mellowed in 2021.
Might be due to being 75 Years Old
Ah yes the infamous David and Nick vs Roger interview that we all love 🏖🍹🍻🎼📀🎹🐷🐑🐕
Unspoken the Wall tour, momentary lapse tour, in The Division Bell Tour. And you can tell the last two they were actually having a good time! Smiling, more relaxed. You didn't see that at the wall shows! Was Roger Waters gone, the band was fantastic and you can tell they were enjoying themselves for once!
Nick reminds me of Tony Banks when Genesis is interviewed, during this interview as he discribes what goes on in PF
Yea, but Banks is a prick LOL
@@markusaurelius777 nah he isn’t.
@@Eleventhearlofmars Oh yea, he is. Watch him in interviews. LOL
I think he looks like Eric Idle
Anyone know what guitar David is playing near the end of the video? Is it a Charvel?
After some research I found out it indeed is an early 80s hand made Charvel San Dimas.
What Nick says about school, about the necessity of learning to work and enjoy working, is so important. That's the primary issue I see with institutional education, and with policymakers' measures towards it. There's a singular focus on content rather than process, and it leaves so many students behind not just academically but in life in general. I'm one of them, sad to say.
He went to prep school.. from a very well connected family.. Extremely wealthy with his collection of vintage cars, properties and investments. Just your typical rock star.. .Total fraud
I thank god for a world that includes pinl floyd. Saw band twice, 1980 wall and the version of floyd without roger in 1988. the wall concert was , is , and forever more will be special. However, they are great regardless of the personel changes. Watching dave play comfortably numb solo on top of a 1oo ft high wall was beyond cool. Flody rules!
I like Nick's reaction to the "screaming girls" question....he actually got animated! Lol
Do you have a time stamp?
@@rachelhuber798 31.45 I thought it was David getting all excited about the 15 - 16 year old girls. :-\
Speaking of the p.a. When they played echoes part 2 the weird” seal” noise was bouncing around the stadium . It was really cool
$20 on a ticket?! Ah the 80’s. My PF tickets stubs were around $30+/- from that era.
I paid £20.00 for Wembley stadium. That was big money then. Ticket touts were selling them for £100.00 + outside on the night.

Its hilarious when there's a page for a fone call, and Gilmours tryin not to laugh. :)
I think this must of been momentary lapse of reason tour 1988, I’ll never forget it 70,000 ppl .
yes you are right
I was at Wembley stadium my favourite gig. Ever.
34:10 and "Learning To Fly" is born.
I’ve only ever seen Waters perform the wall but my god was it a night to remember. I recall driving home that night thinking that I had hit the precipice of life and it was all down hill from there. Lol
Well Waters WAS the Pink, so good !
@@bv3580 Waters is a base player? Gilmour, Mason & Wright were the sound of The Floyd
@@moehunter goodness, it was only the depth lyrical content and composition of the century
@@bv3580 I began liking the Floyd because they played in the dark, few danced & the lights were cool & I most likely would have moved on but for Gilmour's guitar playing & his vocals that began emerging in 69. . . When Waters was legally trying to prevent the band from continuing it was the fact that ALL had composition & lyrical rights to the bands songs that allowed the band without Waters to go on!
grreat interview
One can smell the sassyness through the screen. And I love it.
Learning to Fly!!
could they not have found somewhere less public for the interview ?
the random guy from the beach and the Buffet of racing cars on one couch !
One of the biggest reasons "Dark Side" stayed in the charts is because everyone (especially audiophiles) kept buying it over and over again as soon as there was an clicks or pops (much less skips!) on the vinyl. You wanted that pristine, and the beginning of that album is so quiet that you don't want to hear all that crackle burying the music. (I feel like that's one reason White Album also sold so much over the years; you couldn't hear 'Long Long Long" if the record had too much wear on it, plus you had all those acoustic tunes on side 2. Not everyone kept their vinyl so pristine.)
I'm gonna remix this some day.
I can’t imagine a more cool and laid back cat than David Gilmour
As stated by Nick, as you get older, you understand why we should learn, sadly for me,nobody ever told me why I was at school. . Growing up, playing with a .musical instrument can be more productive than actually playing one.
27:10 fucking epic! 😂
I saw them in a video that I cant seem to remember interviewing all of Pink Floyd tripping balls. They responded exactly as they are in this interview. No egos. Nothing but good guys, good vibes. These guys should offer a seminar on being a real person.
Saw this tour..sorry Roger's Radio Kaos show killed it
Such a similar situation as Mick jones versus Lou Gramm of Foreigner.
I don’t know the date of this interview, but if it was 1987 before their show, I was there. Drove from Rochester New York there. They opened with echoes ( part 2 I believe). Great show. My only criticism here is David’s comments about roger. The bad blood must have run pretty deep for him to say anything at all. Ultimately the way David brought Rick back in was pure class
this was in Toronto at the airport
