    #FF16 #FinalFantasyXVI #PS5
Final Fantasy XVI is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. The sixteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, it is scheduled for release on June 22, 2023 for the PlayStation 5 as a timed exclusive. The game will feature segmented open environments and an action-based combat system involving both melee and magic-based attacks. There are also recurring series features including Chocobos, and summoned monsters called Eikons, which are both fought as bosses and used through channelling their power in combat.
Final Fantasy XVI is set in the fictional world of Valisthea, a world divided between six nations who hold power through access to magical Crystals and Dominants, humans who act as hosts for each nation's Eikon. Tensions between the nations escalate as a malady dubbed the Blight begins consuming the land. Clive Rosfield, guardian to his younger brother Joshua, witnesses his kingdom destroyed and goes on a revenge quest in pursuit of the dark Eikon Ifrit.
Beginning concept development in 2015, the staff included Naoki Yoshida as producer, Hiroshi Takai as main director, artists Hiroshi Minagawa and Kazuya Takahashi, Kazutoyo Maehiro as creative director and lead writer, Masayoshi Soken as composer, and Capcom veteran Ryota Suzuki as battle designer. Yoshida's aim was for a dark fantasy storyline that would have broad appeal and reinvigorate the series. The game has been well received by journalists. Praise was given to its story, characters, music ad combat system. Criticism focused on its lack of deeper RPG elements, framerate issues, and by some for a lack of ethnic and gender representation despite its Medieval European setting and the largely anticipated decision of the creators to make the game as more historically accurate as possible to the demographic and the standards and customs of the time.
Well, I can’t say I’m shocked that after a blockbuster demo everyone loved, it turns out that Final Fantasy XVI itself is good as well. The embargo has lifted, and reviews are coming in for the game which releases tomorrow, June 22. No, the late embargo was not in any way indicative of anything being hidden. I don’t know why they did it, but whatever, reviews are great.
As it stands, Final Fantasy XVI has a 90 on Opencritic in an age when anything over a 90 is at the very least a GOTY contender, and right now its an 88 on Metacritic, but that keeps jumping around.

Exactly. A friend came over and saw me fighting some sort of fire creature. And he said oh you should use a different element like ice to hit his weakness. Or a weapon designed for that type. And I was like nope dude you can literally kill him with a fire attack and it makes absolutely no sense. For how much elements would heal or hurt enemies throughout all of FF, it’s bizarre that the weapons are so forgettable and elements don’t matter.

This action game can have the FF name and iconic themes, but it is a completely different product from what FF was (excluding MMOs and FF15 which started this nonsense).
Too much was striped out of the original formula. Imagine if Diablo 5 becomes a FPS, or if Dark Souls became a turn based RPG… we can pretend it’s the same product forever, just because of its name or skin, but it’s a completely different product.
    Skillup was spot on.
(And yes, the characters are far from iconic. They all feel like characters created using a fancy FF14 character creator tool. Good for an MMO but very low standard when compared to any FF)

Update: Now that I have beaten it 100% I HAVE to be honest. After it was over, I felt a little underwhelmed. Like something was missing. The game is at it's best with presentation and the fight mechanics, but I was missing story, which is odd. I was missing the emotional journey. I normally would cry at some point in a FF game. Not this time. As a LONG time fan, I saw this ending coming a mile away and I wasn't shocked. Maybe it was also the lack of memorable characters. Other than Clive, my only standouts were Hugo and Cid. Their personalities were very present, but I felt everyone else were just there. I didn't care about them, other than Torgal. I love that loyal dog. I give this game a 7 out of 10. I saw this game has a lot of fluff, but no substance. Now, don't take my opinion as absolutes or anything. It's just my opinion, but I hope you all love it!! I will admit it was quite a thrill ride. Just not an emotional one.

I agree. The story and characters were the main issue. This has the most basic RPG story you could ask for (no twist, not as dark as the demo section, not complex, very predictable) honestly one of the worst FF story imo. Characters were boring, Clive especially felt very 1 dimensional (younger Clive was way better and had personality).

1: You get party members you can never play with.

I am 36+ hours in, I think the game has glaring issues that many reviews ignore. At its core it is an oversimplification of past entries. The side missions are cookie cutter and in many cases duplicates with minor differences. They are almost always, kill this small group of monsters or people, go talk to these 3 people and come back. It is an artificial padding with hardly any benefits.
Only Side Quests worth completing are the ones with + in them. The + means upon completion you get a gameplay affecting perk. From holding more potions, unlocking more weapons or boosting the effectiveness of potions.
The main story is excellent and has me wanting to finish the game, but after completing a few main quests, dozens of side quest pop up. I am trying to be a completionist, but it is at a point where I am skipping dialogue for Side Missions.
There seems to be Plot Armor thrown around with some folks not dying over and over again.
I find the Titan Battles to be mixed. The Titan battle was SOOOO SLOOOOOW and I kept thinking "Are we done Yet?".
I plan on finishing the game, but don't think it is close to a 10/10 that it received. I would venture it is closer to a 7/10 due to these glaring issues.

You make a great point about applying your own imagination to the older titles. I think back on the older games and contemplated on what I truly enjoyed about FF and I think it boils down to the epic or riveting moments things like when Rydia returns to the party in FF4 and comes in with the clutch save against Golbez. Objectively, looking at it now, it looks okay, nothing amazing, but what really made that moment was the moments leading up to that and the stakes involved. The actual turn-based combat brought nothing to that moment. I don't remember what skills or attacks I made, I just remember being on the brink of death and Rydia returning to us. Now, take that same scenario and apply it with modern graphics and modern systems and you are closer to the vision that the creators probably had in mind.
Take something like the Titan Eikon fight in FF16 and imagine what that would look like in a turn-based system? Like, absolutely no way.
Like you, FF has been a part of my life since the NES days and I appreciate the evolutionary steps, but really this is just the way of the future. The moments created in FF16 for me, have been absolutely amazing and some of the best I've ever experienced in gaming. It's a shame some people will deny themselves of it for the sake of holding on to nostalgia.

Almost universally the people that hate on the side quests just gave up on them, and I get it, the early ones are pretty boring in terms of what you're asked to do. But they are all setting up characters, stories, locations etc. And they pay off HUGE imo with the later side-quests as all those stories come together and resolve. I think they could have improved what you actually do on the quests, as they pale in comparison to the main quest, but I think that's intention to give you some down time and to not overshadow the main story moments.

It was the characters, stories, and settings, and this has it all. Including involved and fulfilling combat. To you naysayers (and Xbots), you have a right to your opinion but quit trying to ruin other people's enjoyment with your own bitterness and ridiculousness. I'm not going to tell you your opinion is wrong so don't tell me my opinion is wrong. I've played it and as a fan who started with the series on SNES, I absolutely loved it.

They provide some needed character development and insight into the world and major characters, especially Jill. On my playthrough I completed every side quest and notorious mark as soon as they became available and finished the game at 50 hours. Two of the later side quests add Jill and Gav as permanent party members until you depart for origin. The major characters were never side lined, it's just up to the player to reach out to them.

For me, FF completely lost its unique charm somewhere around FF XII releasing and feeling like a very interesting but bizarre experiment, and then the FF XIII games getting cranked out one after another. None of the games since X (and maybe X-2, but I wasn’t a big fan) have felt like real FF titles. Those history buffs out there will recognize this point as when longtime creative director Hironobu Sakaguchi retired from Square, and I don’t think this is a coincidence. The games that came out after X just felt like weird experiments without much attention paid to what made the series so unique, shameless cash grabs, or pure fan service. None of those things interest me. For me, the things that made the old FF games fun wasn’t huge, epic battles and plots with serious political intrigue. It was a sense of whimsical adventure coupled with beautiful worlds that felt authentic. I don’t know if many people don’t want to admit this because they’re afraid it’ll cheapen the franchise, but FF has never done serious plots very well. The best plots are high-stakes, but they don’t take themselves too seriously. Look at the old FF VII. The world is at stake, the bad guys are very evil, and truly awful things are done, but the characters never get overly dour, and the plot always stays somewhat light. The story of VII never gets too emo or nihilistic. All these new titles want to be taken seriously So. Badly. They want to be Game of Thrones, or whatever the latest western TV hit may be. I can’t stand that obsession. FF loses its charm the moment it tries to imitate what the rest of the world is doing.

You walk in very short tight corridors fight a few enemies walk more corridors to an arena fight a boss cutscene rinse repeat. The over all amount of time you are in an new area is less then 20 minutes at a time you go through like 6-7 areas (new places) in less than 4 hours it’s very unusual. I’m not suggesting we have 40 hours of Midgar again like we had in FF7 remake but geez the areas are very small in scope. Short of boss fights there is very little gameplay. I don’t think we need massive empty area like 15 had either. Just saying it feels like Square-enix keep massively over correcting from previous mistakes.

Perhaps the game fails for what you want out of a final fantasy game, and that's totally fair. Maybe it fails as an action game too. I'm just trying to give some insight on why it might be the way it is.

I completed around 90% of the game and initially was very engaged. But the further I made it into the game the more its flaws became pronounced. And it has a lot of them. The side quests are embarrassingly bad and in this day and age should be inexcusable from a AAA developer. The level design is generic that simply has you going from A to B with zero exploration. The combat, although engaging and exciting at first, becomes boring as it's too easy. I died maybe 2 or 3 times on action difficulty. Yes the audiovisual experience is great but the levels, although very pretty, feel lifeless. Even the story, which at first was great, lost steam probably about halfway through as the villains just felt flat and uninspired. I'll probably get around to finishing it since I'm so close to the end, but it certainly wasn't anything special. If I have to score it's a 7 at best.

For me personally, when I say "this isnt Final Fantasy" its not because its a bad game...or because I hate it. The Franchise no longer scratches the itch it once did. Most gamers have moods...I want to play a FPS, I want to play a Chaotic action game etc. Final Fantasy no longer appeals to the JRPG mood for me. Its an odd feeling to be in the mood to play Assassins Creed Valhalla and Final Fantasy 16 be in consideration to scratch that itch...and im not sure its a good thing.. We have no shortage of quality action RPG games, we have an extreme shortage of quality JRPGs of the caliber final fantasy once supplied. Looking back on the things I've played to scratch my JRPG itch says alot....Atelier Ryza, Tales of Arise, Ni No Kuni, Ys, Legend of Heroes, these are great games, but nothing even close to the AAA quality of a Final Fantasy. Its not action vs turn based, Its the lack of itemization RPG elements, the lack of meaningful world exploration, the lack of casual interaction with the world and its people, this game fancies itself so serious that we couldnt have casual world interactions meanwhile they drop about 15 non serious side quest on you during a very pivotal story moment where you should not be wasting a single second in pursuit of the main story....

I would forgive the most mid sidequests of all time if the gameplay was deep enough to keep me hooked through the mid-ness. The world and its characters are enjoyable on their own, no doubt, but the constant reminder that I was going to be doing the same thing over and over kind of killed the satisfaction for me. I completely understand the sentiment this is not my final fantasy. For instance with final fantasy 7 remake if they had kept the combat turn band literally just updated the graphics kept the story and fully voice activate added in some new surprises like they did it would have been the perfect game in my opinion. The original final fantasy 7 did so amazing why did they feel they had to change the combat system? They could have made the turn based combat system more Interactive like dragons of lagoon and it would've been a huge success. So to sum up I still think turnbase combat works all you have to do is make it more interactive. Pushing the attack button at the right time or the Dodge button at the right time. As well as during special moves have a button combination you have to hit in order to engage the full power of that move. There are obvious ways to improve upon turn based combut I don't think you should throw the baby out with the Bath water.

Which is crazy because most FF games have always sort of been more japanese with all there tropes but FF XVI is not like that
Which is probably why it appeals to larger audiences, I guess.

9.5/10 is exactly where I came down on it. I adore the world, the characters, the gameplay, and the scope and scale of everything. My criticisms are primarily that I feel like they didn't do nearly enough with the Hideaway to make it feel like I was building a society there; I would love recruitment missions and be able to really customize it, like a combination of "Fallout 4" and "Red Dead Redemption 2." I also felt like there was a lack of exploration on some of the key characters in the back half, but I also felt like that might've been deliberate to allow for future DLC.
