The active time lore is really cool and I dont think enough people mention it. Being able to pause a cutscene and learn more about a character and their motives or who they are and where they fit in the greater story is really helpful.
Dont know where you are and how it relates to what you are doing? Pause the cutscene and read about it.
Who is that guy and why do they matter? Read about it.
It keeps exposistional dialogue from being too lengthy or exhausting.
Its solves the problem of "Clive lives here, why is he asking a question about something he should aready know about?"
You dont really need characters, like mimir for example, expositing lore at you. You choose when to engage with the minutae of the world.
    Its really great!

I really like Mimir though. Yeah he's really just with Kratos for exposition but he tells it all through his own personality so it's always entertaining to listen to. He's probably my favorite character from the last two GOW games

    • @locke2517
      @locke2517 Год назад +1

@@ThwipThwipBoom let me be clear. I really like mimir too! I was just using him as an example. Mimir is probably the best version of a character whos main purpose is to spew expositional dialogue.
I just like that ff16 doesn't feel the need to constantly explain itself. If you have a question, just pause the game and read about it.
Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

“Open World” is the most overrated trend for games in recent times. Not every game needs to be open world to be considered great. In fact a lot of open world games fall short in almost all other aspects and make the games not fun to play. Give me a non-open world game with great story and mechanics any day and it will be more enjoyable.

    • @keetbuch8217

I’m very much enjoying it. Where some games feel bloated and ashamed to be a video game, this seems to embrace it, and retains a sharp focus on what it’s doing. Where open worlds with a million meaningless side quests overwhelm and bore me, this has really kept my attention sucking me into the narrative, and exploring the combo potential in the combat. I’m enjoying this significantly more than the unfocused ff15 though I only played that games launch version, not it’s enhanced release with further dlc and altered story.

I just wished they would bring back gambit system. Especially for ff7r and 16. The side characters stand around. but in 7r once you take over, the enemies track that character so if you're smooth you can switch and combo all day but while your not they need some incentive to move around and attack. 16 I just wish you could preprogram them to do what you want even though you can't switch

mention of customizing allies gear for effectiveness got me to realize they did not have to make these compromises for an action focused game. You can customize ally behavior and gear and still button mash away. They chose to disregard that bit of potential gameplay. Even if you don't have party members you can directly control, you could still manage them.

I gotta say I think I disagree with you and agree with digital foundry's choice that the game should be played in quality mode and not performance mode as a ton of cutscenes are locked at 30 fps and their dynamic resolution options in framerate mode has abysmal stability. It's 60fps in battles only (and even then not always) and everywhere else it's borderline 45 fps on average. In their words, it becomes jarring jumping framerares constantly whereas quality is straight locked 30fps 99 percent of the entire game. Other than that nitpick great review as always
Edit: I still find myself wanting to play in framerate mode now tho...hope they stabilize it, would be my preference

I agree with almost everything, but I just wish the game had some RPG elements. Like interesting gear and some sort of skill progression.
I think they went too far into the character-action genre, as now we're in a world where God of War has deeper progression mechanics than a Final Fantasy game.

    example from eurogamer:
several locations take open inspiration from north Africa and the Middle East, with towns that, for example, riff on Islamic architectural traditions and attire, but are predominantly or exclusively populated by anglophone white people (I hedge, here, simply because I haven't been around and talked to everybody). Terrible antialiasing, texture pop-ins from 10 meters away, and internal resolution dropping to almost 720p at times coupled with the fps barely hitting 45fps out of battle. I enjoy the game but my main critiques are the combat needs an extra layer like introducing elemental weakness and the lack of how you can build Clive. The only variation to building are the eikon abilities. Along with the enemies are too passive which bring downs the combat.

The combat’s pacing is absolutely perfect imo. Starts out really simple so you can get deeply acquainted with every aspect of your move set and gets exponentially more complex the further along you get. Some of the late game powers get pretty complicated, and they make sure to give you enough time to gradually incorporate the new stuff into your rotation so that when you reach NG+ and unlock Final Fantasy mode, you have a chance to kick ass straight out of the gate

@Gamer_Cafe About one of two party based RPGs I'm looking forward to, the other being Rogue Trader. Other than that, the shift is going action. Even the KOTOR remake, should it ever happen, is rumored to be "more action oriented", and I think that's flat-out heresy. Just improve the system that's already there! The market is over saturated with action games as it is.

ff16 is all style no substance. Game looks gorgeous but the game design is at least a decade old and uninteresting. The progression is hyper linear, you cant do anything to modify the story. And the QTE fest directly inspired by Asura's Wrath is far from a good thing. The setting is a generic euro-centric medieval fantasy (reminder that there is a little bit of middle east looking culture in the game) and the main characters are all whites. Only one character looks somewhat middle eastern (more like a mix between a middle eastern and a scandinavian strongman) and he's a villain
