@@Seriously_Unserious The officials seem to have always shafted the Canucks. During the Sedin era it was open season on them - like how the WNBA didn't call blatant fouls against Caitlin Clarke all season - and the officiating was so disgusting in the Van/Bos Stanley Cup series I'm still convinced there was real bias for Boston - they call it "letting them play" which is a euphemism for officials not doing their f***ing job of calling clear infractions.
The NHL is a joke and is a failing league. Old men at the top don’t care for the young ones coming up. All about money, who cares if they miss a call. Only 2 million people are going to watch a game anyway. How can we call this a professional league. Feel bad for the players that this crap is the best they will get unfortunately
If they reviewed this incident ( which they did ) they would see that Hughes didn’t extend his arms with any force at all and Norris was losing his balance before the love tap. When Norris reappeared from the dressing room before the penalty was up, he should have received an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. There should be a rule that when someone lays on the ice like they’ve been shot and then comes back on the ice less than 5 minutes later it’s a penalty or at least a fine.
I think a fair counter to this would be that if the injured player returns , the penalty should be reduced to 5 minutes and the penalized player should be able to return to the bench and maybe even have a certain amount of shifts theyre taken out of the rotation.... 2 for initial , 4 for a double minor , 5 for blood... but if the review shows that the offensive play was clean and there was no malicious intent, it shouldnt ever be a game. Game misconducts should only ever be handed down for a hit or play that causes an injured player to be taken out of the game, not the period , or the next handful of shifts.
If you watch the play, as the refs did, you can see the fall was a result of Norris losing an edge on his right skate. Norris would most likely have hit the boards on his own. I fall a lot, so in this I am an expert.
I played junior and college hockey back in the 70’s. Being physical had a different meaning then. If a player on any of the teams I played on ever hit a guy in the back and into the boards, we his teammates would have crucified him in the dressing room. So much in hockey is better today but these sissy crosschecks to the back and/or into the boards need to exit the game. One of the greatest goal scores to play the game, Mike Bossy quit because of those kinds of hits. IMHO Hughes needs to be better and totally deserves the penalty.
NHL reffing continues to be unworthy of the product. They overreacted on Hughes because they have blown so many calls this season already. (too many to list here) Whiteclouds penalty reversal on the Knies head injury being the most recent. IMO. The refs need help, they are too influential in game outcomes - in a negative way. The Hughes call should have been reduced ; Noriss given an academy award, from head office. Has anyone seen the non boarding call on Dillon a few weeks ago that sparked the fight and left the Devils shorthanded ? I've never seen O'Keefe so angry. That play was the opposite to this one - where a real attempt to injure (sucessful, bleeding nose, face smashed into the glass) was missed, Dillon fought , a got 7 minutes while the boarder got 5 for fighting) - and the League could have looked at that play and booked the guy ( Mantha, I think ) for a major after the fact. There are too many rats and rat plays going unpuinshed. It's always been a problem in hockey , let's let the cameras and the profesionals behind the scenes continue to review and error-correct to improve the quality of the officiating. All penalties that have the potential to influence the outcome of a game deserve League review. Add Majors, game misconducts, and , perhaps most importantly - injury status. Kyle Connor was knocked out last season for 8 weeks thanks to Dylan Stromes blatant knee on knee. I think he got 2 minutes. There has to be more of a consequence to these acts than that. The NHL leaves it to the Jets to go seek revenge ? And the Nucks for Jeannot on Boesser? 3 games for that who cares ? That is zero deterrent. Tie TOI lost to injurious acts. Make the punishments worse if the player is a star and the offender a goon. The NHL has never protected it's stars ; this stuff would disappear almost overnight. I love tough hockey, fairly played this game should not result in the number of serious injuries we see.
Stutzle got away with interference, crosschecking, and more, especially before the last Ottawa goal, where play was not stopped for the infractions. There were 3 teams in that game, canucks and 2 for the home team.
Hit a player from behind via a crosscheck.. with Norris' face hitting the boards. Yes, he needed stiches.. We don't know if dental repairs are needed later. What you are saying is that because Hughes is a star player, he shouldn't receive the same type of penalty the 'regular' players do? Gotcha.
I’m saying a guy who exemplifies integrity of the game with zero intention of injury (and didn’t do anything different he does for every cross check) should be looked at the same as a reeves or trouba type. But also yes star players should be given special treatment as they attract a lot of the fans. Look at the jerseys.
He is the reigning Norris trophy holder or are you not aware. I believe he is also third fastest to 300 assists too. You might want to bone up on your hockey knowledge junior
@racasm makar also came on to a cup contending team from the get. Hughes gained his points total on a team that didn't make the playoffs for like 4 years so you're point is arguable.
Maybe there should be a minimum on how long a player should have to leave rhe game if there is a suspected injury. Like if the rule says a guy needs to be injured to result in a game misconduct, then that player should be required to actually miss time. If you think you're hurt then there should be a 5 minute minimum for how long you need to wait before coming back in the game. At least then a player can't leave and then come back like nothing happened. Maybe the "injured" players coach can elect to administer a game misconduct, but the "injured" player must remain out for 10 min or until the end of period if less than, or else the coach can choose to aminister a double minor instead and the "injured" player can remain in the game after a quick evaluation. This could instentivise players to not fake it, and prevent legitimately injured players from returning too soon and relieve proper evaluation. If you take the game misconduct and the player is fine, then it's better safe than sorry.
If you saw Norris in his interview after the game, he did look pretty rough - cut lip and nose, and his face pretty swollen; I was a bit shocked as it looked like a nothing hit!
This is the path the game is on. The head is sacrosanct. A light check but a check in the numbers doesn’t look great. This journey of change in where the line is not helped by a lack of communication from the zebras and a league run by a lawyer whose head is in the sand on CTE. Clarity could be so easy but the lawyer is thinking about liability of owners and the league, not the game.
OK I HAVE 48 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WATCHING HOCKEY THOUSANDS OF GAME LITERALLY. LETS REMEMBER WE SEE THIS VIDEO IN SLOW MOTION. THE REFS SEE IT AT FULL SPEED. BUT THE RULE HAS AN EXCEPTION IF A PLAYER IS HIT FROM BEHIND INTO THE BOARDS AND SUSTAINS AN INJURY TO THE HEAD OR FACE AUTOMATIC GAME MISCONDUCT. STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO PAY OVERPRICED TICKETS HERE. THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE AND NEVER SHOULD BE. The reffing is so ridiculous, as a Canucks fan I don’t want any special treatment just consistent refs, they even rewatched it and could tell he didn’t try to hurt him, every single player does that little hit to other players, should’ve been a double minor in my opinion! Judging by the leafs game the other day, their player got smoked in the head shoulder first and the leafs went on the pk after cause of the scrum afterwards, it’s annoying!
That was one of the worst calls ever. Typical NHL calls now. Total BS! Just wanting to feel important or what! Those who can't play, ref. Wrecks the game 100%.
I feel like the penalty is definitely justified, I've seen that called a bunch, guy is in a vulnerable position, as shown by the outcome, laying that hit lead to him eating the boards, that to me should be heavily penalized. Dont think it was malicious or anything, but sometimes it doesn't have to be malicious to be a game misconduct, just a bad set of circumstances. I feel like your complaint is more that Hughes got ejected because he's a star and people pay to see him. If anyone else lays that hit and gets a game misconduct are you complaining? Stars shouldn't have different rules because they're fun to watch.
@@apalesch1 yeah wasn't vicious still a penalty that resulted in an injury. So 5 minutes is the only option. A double minor should be an option in the future
He also looked like he caught an edge, which threw him off balance. Still should be a penalty, just not 5 and a game. And the Stitzle hit on Hoglander sure as sh!t should have been also 5 and a game if the Hughes hit was the standard they set earlier.
@@Seriously_Unserious the Stutzle hit was far worse he ran him should've been 2 and then a fine since there was no obvious injury since Hoglander got up immediately ready to beat his ass. I heard about it, but this is the first time I have seen it. That was ridiculous. 5 for that!?!? The refs are an embarrassment. That was 2 minutes, that's it. What a joke.
Looks like Norris was transitioning to change direction (look at his skates) and got bumped right in the middle of it. You can see Hughes didn’t drive him into the boards so it was a pretty soft bump at the exact wrong time.
Now lets place Matthews in Quinns place do you think the Toronto brass upstairs is reviewing this play to give Matthews a game misconduct. Absolutely not! Its the most egregious penalty I've seen in a very long time.
Wow. Nothing sadder then a bunch of Homer's excusing this sort of play when their home town star is the offender. If the shoe was on the other foot you would all be asking for several games for punishment. The rules were followed to a tee. This is what is wrong in the world today. Nobody can be straight up faif and honest anymore. People suck.
It's a bad call and as always the League explanation is phrased as if we all didn't even see the play. A slight cut on the nose is an "injury" so the War Room has an excuse not to overrule the officials the League coddles and shields from all criticism. If teams complain its a fine of at least $20K
Pretty lame call for sure. Definitely a 2 min. infraction, but that's it. Norris, felt QH pushing and thought he'd try his acting skills out instead of his hockey skills. It only worked out for him in the short term though! 😉
Refs are in classic mid playoff form already! This call was a joke. At WORST it should have been a double minor. The fact that it was a 5 +game is just another sign how this league is the worst officiated in pro sports. NFL fans think they have it bad? Lol they should pick up a hockey team and try watching XD
Just cause Hughes isn't vicious doesn't mean it's not a major. He's fuccked up. End of story. It's not Norris' fault, he didn't dive and skated off almost right away.
Yup.. People just don't get it. You cannot push from behind. That's it. He pushed from behind. This is why it's so serious. Protocol was to check for a concussion and they did. Player came back. Id have to say I'd prefer if the player has to stay out for the game if it's considered a game for a head injury.. But he did fuck up. So he needed to go ah, to da box and feel shame..
It was reckless of Hughes to bump Norris, sure, but if you watch closely, you'll see Norris had caught an edge and was likely about to fall into the boards regardless. AND Stitzle's hit was far worse, so how come not only did HE not get 5 and a game too, but they actually gave Hoglander 2 minutes for GETTING hit from behind? That's the thing pissing most people off -- the double standard. Pick one or the other. Either it's Hoglande gets 2 for getting hit from behind and Stitzle gets nothing and Norris also gets 2 for being hit from behind, and Hughes gets nothing, or both Hughes AND Stetzle each get penalized for hitting from behind and Norirs AND Hoglander get nothing for being the victim of a penalty. PICK ONE standard and apply it to everyone!
So your argument is that because Norris was vulnerable and might have fallen means it's not as bad for him to push him from behind while he is vulnerable.??? Ya ok. I think you're bringing in a BS preposition and that's ruined any comparison you might make..@@Seriously_Unserious
Hughes hit him on the numbers off the boards. That is his mistake. The rest is interpretation. But please don’t suggest Hughes gets special treatment because he is some kind of hockey god. They were playing in Ottawa. No one bought tickets solely to seen Hughes. I’m sure Ottawa fans were happy to see him go.
This should have been 2 minutes, not 5 and a game. He wasn't trying to hurt him, like you said, it's a hit you see every day. Norris is such a pansy. Nothing else will come if this because he basically already got a 1 game suspension
and let's not forgot that Stitzle did basically worse to Hoglander. Yet not only did Stitzle not get a penalty for a more vicious hit from behind, but it was his victim who got the penalty. If what Hughes did was 5 and a game then call Stitzle for 5 and a game too! and no penalty to Hoglander, that's bullshit.
Bud im a lifelong canucks fan, but youre way off. You want them to consider a players following and salary when calling a penalty??? If quinn was crosschecked in the back like that, youd be fuming. It wasnt a vicious play but you can see he turns his head because he missed the puck. If quin had body position, or reacted faster, he wouldn't have had to crosscheck
Exactly it wasn't malicious but Norris with his body position wasn't in a great position to brace for any kind of push in the back. Definitely not suspendable but there's an injury(nothing major just a cut) so that's the call) I wouldn't hate if they started doing 4 minute calls for something like this.
I think a guy who has 4 penalty minutes coming into this game should be given more leniency than a reeves/tkachuk type… but yes reverse the roles I’d be calling for a 5 game sussy for Norris 😂
@peteysnipe40 I feel you man, the first thing I said when I heard about the hit was, "Isn't Quinn like 5'7?" I think Quinn will learn to make this check without being totally parallel to the guy and keeping the stick closer to his chest. I really hate this trend of hitting with the hands/stick
I'm not questioning that the Hughes hit was a legit 2 or even 4 minute penalty for getting a bit reckless on that play, but what about Stitzle? How was his much harder hit from behind not only somehow not a penalty ... FOR HIM, but actually somehow a Nils Hoglander Penalty? Last I checked, having another guy ram your face into the boeards from behind was NOT a penalty, it was ramming another guy's face into the boards from behind. That SHOULD have been 5 and a game for Stitzle AND a review for additional suspensions. Regardless of whether or not Hoglander actually did get injured, that was the obvious intention of that hit, or at least it was reckless disregard for the health of Hoglander.
This is a boarding major; just like with penalties like high sticking, sometimes the effect of the infraction comes into deciding the punishment for it. Sure, he's a small guy, sure he wasn't "trying" to hurt him, but he did give a cross check to the numbers which threw the Ottawa player face-first into the boards. If the exact same play would have happened TO Hughes, you would be calling for a match penalty. You must call this as an official or you are giving preferential treatment to players which will never end good for the league.
SUBSCRIBE!! Also, let me know what you think about Hughes getting thrown out! The good, bad and the ugly…

Bro he was playing the puck lmao delusional
@@supershot9729 Bro, he was getting his edge caught in the ice and about to fall. Stitzle hit Hoglander from behind with malicious intent but no call for Stitzle, but Hoglander gets a penalty for what the hell? Why such a blatant double standard? Delusional!
@theknucklesmalone Miss Don Cherry. He was broadcasting's voice of reason on this subject, and this is exactly what he'd say. 👍🏻
@@supershot9729 I agree that he was playing the puck, but you have to agree that anytime you play the puck you’re subject to contact. That doesn’t have to mean a huge hit but somebody is likely going to touch you some shape or form. The way he’s choosing to play the puck seems a bit careless no?
At most a double minor - it wasn't even a hit just a push really and because the guy was off balance he fell awkwardly - And there was no injury on the play so wtf ?? The goon who blindsided Boeser and deliberately slammed his shoulder into Boeser's face - a potential neck-breaking, career-ending hit only got a 3 game suspension for doing exactly the thing the league says it wants to eliminate. Meanwhile Boeser has missed 7 games and counting.
and that's not to mention Stitzle on Hoglander. Not only did Stitzle NOT get penalized for hitting from behind, but the refs even went so far as to give Hoglander the penalty! If we follow THAT standard, then Norris should have gotten 2 for interference and Hughes no penalty. Norris clearly interfered with Hughes being able to skate to the puck unimpeded - he should not have put his backside in Hughes' way! /s
Norris was reaching back for the puck. Then bench staff ran him directly into dressing room with an “injury”. Enacting rule book.
The NHL is a joke and is a failing league. Old men at the top don’t care for the young ones coming up. All about money, who cares if they miss a call. Only 2 million people are going to watch a game anyway. How can we call this a professional league. Feel bad for the players that this crap is the best they will get unfortunately
If that's how you feel then why are you here?
It wasn't boarding. It was a hit from behind. I fail to see why NHL refs can not call this penalty.
100% it’s more of a “freak accident”… for lack of a better word
This fan deserves a small reward from the Canucks for this.
Totally agree thanks for your thoughts

The downfall of NHL is the Referees. People are getting fed up. Refs are purposely trying to win games for certain teams.
If Hughes is done for the game , so should Norris. Garbage how a few mins later Norris comes back and plays on the power-play.
Stutzle got away with interference, crosschecking, and more, especially before the last Ottawa goal, where play was not stopped for the infractions. There were 3 teams in that game, canucks and 2 for the home team.
I’d hate to see Norris outdoors when there’s a slight breeze. Dude went down way too easy.
Greatest defence man in the world,!!!
WTF?
Is the narrator’s last name Hughes???
LOL
I mean, it's either him or makar. Those are currently the only two options for best in the world defense wise. Guessing you don't watch much hockey.
You know he won the best defenseman in the league award last year right? Nhl is the best league in the world? Common sense my man
He is the reigning Norris trophy holder or are you not aware. I believe he is also third fastest to 300 assists too. You might want to bone up on your hockey knowledge junior
@@Braedyn12 By 2 points with wayyy more games played, Makar is better but in a world without makar, hughes is king.
@racasm makar also came on to a cup contending team from the get. Hughes gained his points total on a team that didn't make the playoffs for like 4 years so you're point is arguable.
But the jump into Knives was not a penalty or attempt to injure or a check to the Head! what a load of horseshit!
100%
Cross checked from behind ... got to call this.
The poor refereeing of the NHL has almost made the game impossible to watch.
It’s been bad so far
If you saw Norris in his interview after the game, he did look pretty rough - cut lip and nose, and his face pretty swollen; I was a bit shocked as it looked like a nothing hit!
Clumsy play, deserving a penalty. Not vicious, but clumsy and endangered the other guy hitting him from behind. Shoulda been a minor penalty.
Have you played hockey? By the way, it’s called a dasher, not edge. It’s doesn’t matter how hard the hit(cross check) was, but how dangerous it was.
Unbiased? LOL. Oh the poor fans that were cheated. Nice try. LOL
@@user-iw5mp5th6d 😂😂
This is the path the game is on. The head is sacrosanct. A light check but a check in the numbers doesn’t look great.
This journey of change in where the line is not helped by a lack of communication from the zebras and a league run by a lawyer whose head is in the sand on CTE. Clarity could be so easy but the lawyer is thinking about liability of owners and the league, not the game.
Norris should of been held for concussion protocol, out for the rest of the game
Checking from behind is a match penalty. It's just that simple.
OK I HAVE 48 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WATCHING HOCKEY THOUSANDS OF GAME LITERALLY. LETS REMEMBER WE SEE THIS VIDEO IN SLOW MOTION. THE REFS SEE IT AT FULL SPEED.
HUGHES DOES USE HIS STICK TO CROSS CHECK NORRIS FROM BEHIND AND INTO THE BOARDS. DANGEROUS PLAY DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU WEIGH 174LBS OR 226 LBS. THIS SHOULD HAVE JUST BEEN A 5 MIN BOARDING CALL END OF DISCUSSION. BUT THE RULE HAS AN EXCEPTION IF A PLAYER IS HIT FROM BEHIND INTO THE BOARDS AND SUSTAINS AN INJURY TO THE HEAD OR FACE AUTOMATIC GAME MISCONDUCT.
YES NORRIS IS GUILTY OF EMBELLISHMENT , HE SOLD THE PLAY AND MADE IT FAR MORE DRAMATIC KNOWING IT WOULD HUGHES WOULD GET A MAJOR AND GAME MISCONDUCT.
STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO PAY OVERPRICED TICKETS HERE. THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE AND NEVER SHOULD BE.
WHO SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED IS NORRIS FOR ACTING/DIVING AND THE COACH TRAVIS GREEN OTTAWA COACH. NOW WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN IS PLAYER SAFETY REVIEW SHOULD GIVE NORRIS A 2 GAME SUSPENSION FOR EMBELLISHING AN INJURY.
THIS WOULD SEND A MESSAGE TO THE ENTIRE LEAGUE , WANT TO OVERPLAY AND FAKE AN INJURY THE VIDEO WILL CATCH YOU AND YOU CAN BE DISCIPLINED WELL . END OF STORY.

@@daveg-Vancouver_Island exactly just some consistency…
2 minutes, definitely. 4 minutes double minor, I could live with. 5 minute major + game misconduct? GET YOUR HEADS CHECKED REFS! 🤦🏻

Any use of the stick like that is a cross check…
Quinn needed a rest anyway.
Honestly I thought the same thing..
Just really bad timing; Norris did a little hop to switch his footing, his right foot is in the air, and that’s exactly when Hughes hits him.
Like I said a double minor needs to be an option in the future so that way a refs hands aren't tied because that was a 5 under the stupid rule they have to enforce.
They want Ottawa in the playoffs. Same old same old ref crap
Canucks Won That Was Revenge Itself
Yesss!!
Now lets place Matthews in Quinns place do you think the Toronto brass upstairs is reviewing this play to give Matthews a game misconduct. Absolutely not! Its the most egregious penalty I've seen in a very long time.
I agree
Inconsistency is all that I can say.

Stutzle diving syndrome wearing off on his teammates
Wild
Pretty lame call for sure. Definitely a 2 min. infraction, but that's it. Norris, felt QH pushing and thought he'd try his acting skills out instead of his hockey skills. It only worked out for him in the short term though! 😉
2 min all day but that’s it. He put on a performance for the ages 😂😂
Refs are in classic mid playoff form already! This call was a joke. At WORST it should have been a double minor. The fact that it was a 5 +game is just another sign how this league is the worst officiated in pro sports. NFL fans think they have it bad? Lol they should pick up a hockey team and try watching XD
Cannot embarrass stupidity

Hughes is a monstrous dirty player and should be banned from the league.

@ in all seriousness I think they’re about even, maker is better offense while Hughes is better defense.
Yup true
Casuals
Pretty clear who you were cheering for
go Canucks go🤣
Unbiased says the guys named peteysnipe40 lmao
I heard he got five and a game for something small. That definitely seems like something small.

@peteysnipe40 I feel you man, the first thing I said when I heard about the hit was, "Isn't Quinn like 5'7?"
I think Quinn will learn to make this check without being totally parallel to the guy and keeping the stick closer to his chest. I really hate this trend of hitting with the hands/stick

Yup😂😂😂 he’s my fav RUclipsr. I’ll catch you in the next one!
Hughes is great but Makar is better

Check the dirty hit on Hoglander! Absolute garbage
100%!!
Greatest defenseman? 😅😂 nah...
Only won the Norris and has the best stats in the NHL right now, but please continue.
Should Hoglander have stayed down?
