      Agreed on that one. For all it's faults, the transport in London and suburbs is pretty well connected. I am in my early forties and have never learnt to drive (but people still do and I am still the exception). It's only when people move out of the city that they have to really think about getting a car. Depending on where you are in London the traffic, pollution and travel time makes a car prohibitive.

    • @kxyoto8541
      @kxyoto8541 5 лет назад +9

      That’s probably because of how many people live there and the shit ton of traffic that comes with that.

      Although I was born in England, I learned to drive in Australia and have mostly driven in and around Melbourne. When I went back on holiday in the 1970s, all my relatives in England and Wales warned me not to drive in London. So I took their advice, parked the car in a long-term garage and bought a "Red Rover" bus pass. However, once I had to go somewhere where there was no convenient public transport and decided to drive. What a pleasant surprise! The almost unfailing politeness and courtesy of British drivers in an urban setting made driving in London (or any other British city) a breeze. Try driving through Sydney in peak hours if you think London is bad. Where I found the Brits fell down was on the open road - they seemed to leave both their brains and manners at the motorway entrance. Aussies are he opposite.

    We put chlorine in swimming pools in the UK, not in chicken.

    • @89Keith
      @89Keith 5 лет назад +88

      no the other reason we do it is due to having higher health and safety requirements that help ensure that meat doesnt get litterally covered in s**t during the butchering process, reducing the need for chlorine.
      "A report by the EU Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures, for example, highlighted that the chemical cleaning treatment can be effective at removing food-borne pathogens depending on how it is used. The real fear is that heavily soiled birds may not be sufficiently disinfected, and that relying on chlorine washing could lead to poorer hygiene standards overall.
      EU officials believe the food industry should be continually improving hygiene standards in all steps of processing - the “farm to fork” principle, and so have banned chickens washed in chlorine as a deterrent to poor practices. But in the US there are no poultry welfare standards so the process is common. There have also been reports, including undercover video evidence by the Humane Society of the United States, of both inhumane and unsanitary practices being carried out within poultry houses due to a lack of animal welfare regulation."

      @Blee more people die from food poisoning of chicken in the US than the UK. In the UK we have higher standards of animal welfare. It's not perfect but on average it's better than the US. Our chickens live in a cleaner environment so there is less bacteria to start with.

In Manhattan that's a big no no. The rest of NY state is more "welcoming" because of how reserved it is. Nothing like the Midwest and the south though. They say hi to random people and that kinda scares me lol.

    Great review, actually. The most important tip you gave was to look right when you cross the street. I have literally saved two Canadian friends' lives in London. On both occasions, they were about to step out in front of a double decker bus. Of course, the good part is that they are now my slaves ... The only thing I would add about renting a car - you can rent an automatic car. Just tell them ahead of time. Rental companies are becoming better at that. Also - don't drive in London. The public transportation is great, congestion charges will hammer you, there is nowhere to park - the list is endless. But when you go out, you really need a car as public transport outside London is wholly undependable. And pricey.

      Band Lover American here, and most of us “queue” just fine. In fact the only times I’ve noticed line jumping is in theme parks like Universal Orlando or Disney World. Big hand to all the British tourists because y’all are always a pleasure to stand next to in line, always polite and give us Americans our personal space. Now the WORST tourists and worst offenders when it comes to line jumping are as a general rule from South America. Mostly Argentina. Can’t tell you how close I’ve come to punching one who was literally brushing up against me in line. And they have these damn tour groups of Teenage girls who literally travel in groups of 50-100 and sing group songs really loudly and generally just ruin everyone’s day. And I know their from Argentina because the will literally have the flags all over their shirts and carrying little ones or having them wrapped like blankets. And they will have one family member get in line , and then the entire rest of the family will push through the line past 100 people. And really mankytoes? In what exact way are we less civilized?

    • @jupitersnoot4915
      @jupitersnoot4915 6 лет назад +19

      Takertantrum2000 America isn't the only diverse country. The rest of the world actually exists too and everyone else has just as much diversity as the US. Although with what I've seen coming out of the US in terms of how people seem to treat each other there, I dare say everyone else is doing a bit of a better job at being diverse. Diversity means nothing if everyone hates each other and constantly talks shit about everyone else. (Not saying that you do, but in general what I've seen myself coming from americans that I have met, and when I've been to america myself, it may be diverse, but that doesn't mean they all like it and get along)
      I just get fed up of this "we're better than all of you" patronizing snooty attitudes that americans have. (Again, not saying its you personally but in general.) I can't tell you how many times I've heard the fucking patronizing speach about the so called 'melting pot' or had someone ask me how it feels to be second class to america. Maybe if the general people of america pulled that shiny silver spoon out of their asses and shut the fuck up saying that america is so amazing, maybe the rest of the world wouldn't have the view that america is a pile of shit? Cause trust me, from the outside looking in, I would never cross that border again if it meant having to talk to or see any of the people. I hope you can understand how patronizing it is. It's probably unintentional, but I've heard that melting pot crap so much that all i hear now when someone says it to me is 'my country is better than yours because there are more people in it' it fucking annoys the shit out of me

      Nikita Lomas i’m sorry you’ve had those experiences and honestly i’ve felt and witnessed the same thing from ignorant people over here. america has the potential to be an amazing country but people can’t seem to accept that america isn’t the only place on earth. a lot of that is the media we are given that makes it seem like america is bigger than it is (figuratively). so i definitely see where you’re coming from, and i agree to the fullest lol
      obviously like you said, not everyone is like that, but it’s enough to where america has become a very polarizing place to live, especially for
      someone like me. i live in washington, d.c.
      but purely from a culinary perspective, i’m not saying that we are the only country who has diverse people, so i apologize that i made it seem like i was saying it in that manner. i just think there’s this stereotype that all americans do is drink cheese from a can and eat fried twinkies. i’m not criticizing it tbh-if someone eats that, then as long as they’re happy i’m cool.

    I live in England and recently visited America. Sooo many people said they had never been to London! I was baffled that everyone seemed to think London was the only place to visit in England lol.
    I have lived in England my whole life and my favourite part of it is the Yorkshire Dales. If you want to experience true British culture, lovely independent coffee shops, old brick walls trailing through serene countryside and much more, then the Dales is a MUST!
    Also, I found it bizarre that we apparently have a reputation for bad food 🤔 I think we have lovely food, and much healthier options. Be warned; our veg doesn’t come swimming in a pool of butter.

      To an American I can completely understand why they find out food plain/bad. American’s almost always eat out partially due to the cost of ingredients in America making it cheaper to eat out. the food is full of sugar, fat and salt to make it taste better while in Britain we rarely eat out and only in ‘higher class’/fancy restaurants which a lot of tourists may not do. furthermore, Britain our ‘street food’ of Chinese & kebab shop etc is pretty awful, it Britain we mainly eat in, so they don’t experience the same British food we do. Pub food can be pretty hit or miss but once again we have a far ‘duller’ pallet than Americans so we use less salt and sugar, so all food taste way blander to Americans.

    Yet again another good 'DON'Ts' video. Though I will say, the 'calling people British' thing can be safer by calling people English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish, if you struggle with accents, just ask and NEVER assume. The term British technically applies to people from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, though the only people that go by that term are the majority of English people. The Scottish, Welsh and Irish will never want to be called British and the same goes for me, I'm an Englishman and I get pissed off being called a Brit usually by American people.

    2:36 Do you know why we drive on the left?
    In the Middle Ages you never knew who you were going to meet when travelling. Most people are right-handed, so if a stranger passed by on the right of you, your right hand would be free to use your sword if required. (Similarly, medieval castle staircases spiral in a clockwise direction going upwards, so the defending soldiers would be able to stab down around the twist but those attacking (going up the stairs) would not.)
    Indeed the ‘keep to the left’ rule goes back even further in time; archaeologists have discovered evidence suggesting that the Romans drove carts and wagons on the left, and it is known that Roman soldiers always marched on the left.
    However, the most important reason why we drive on the left is because it’d cost too much money to change the signs and move our steering wheels over to the other side 👍

I expect right side road users are non tactically attuned countrys, Britain was a country that was war based to the bone, every aspect was war efficient. @@dragzgaming good point. Well you got to understand that the 2/3 of the countries that are driving on the right rebelled back before cars came to be. Most that drive on left we're colonised up into the 20th century. As I'm trying to think about spiral staircases. I haven't seen all that many because most building I go into were built within the past 40/50 years and they're modern set ups. I'm right handed as 85% of people. All I can say it's only been about 25 years or so since things have really been manufactured in abundance for left handed people. I hear that every year over 20,000 left handed people end up getting themselves killed accidentally useing things designed for right handed people. So it's only been a generation or so since left handed people had an easy time in the world but it's been a couple hundred years at the very least since we've had to pull out swords and weapons on the road as an expected part of life

    About driving: Don't drive in London, especially as a foreign tourist if you're not used to driving on the left. London traffic is far worse than in smaller towns and cities, there are many one-way roads, toll roads, roundabouts and traffic lights. And there's no law on jay-walking; pedestrians can and do cross anywhere they think is safe. In my experience, it's far quicker, cheaper and less frustrating to use the tube (subway). You can even rent a bike, and although I haven't personally tried that in London, I'm sure it would be faster than driving for many journeys.
    But by all means, driving is the best option for smaller cities and towns, and pretty much the only practical option for more rural destinations.

    Asking Police for help is a really useful tip for tourists in need of directions or anything really. The Police don't have the same presence in other parts of the UK but in London you'll definitely see them about, they're more than happy to help and they'll give you safe directions they see it as part of their job to make sure tourists feel welcome.

    Also when walking up stairs, if the stairs are split in half please walk on the left side. A lot of stairs in train stations have marks on the stairs but a lot of people forget and it's quite frustrating when trying to walk up or down and someone is going the other way on the same side

    Great Video! There's just a couple of things I'd like to add;
    - The £1 coins as seen at 5:11 are no longer legal tender, so make sure you have the 12-sided £1s
    - Don't expect to get free plastic bags from supermarkets (like in the US), there is a charge of 5p for the single use ones, or 10p for the thicker reusable ones.

    • @Rick-vm8bl
      @Rick-vm8bl 6 лет назад

      Actually the thicker ones are now replacing the thin ones, and are 5p. Both my local sainsbo's and tesco's have done it, it seems mainly in tesco local.

    • @mcstriker
      @mcstriker 6 лет назад

      Rick M yh the co-op reusables are 10p whilst the shit ones are 5p.
