Reminds me of my first shop...a 12x12 back porch. I just added 3 walls and an air conditioner. In order to use any tool I had to move all the other tools out of the way. What I've learned over the years about shop organization are some simple "shop rules" to live by; All tools go on the wall. Horizontal work space is sacred and nothing is stored there. Hardware goes in bins in drawers. Any item larger than a shop-vac gets casters. All supplies/tools needed to operate a machine are kept at the machine. If it produces dust it gets dust collection. All cords are hidden where possible. and make the shop as comfortable as you can. Hope that helps! Tim

Awesome video! Two things; the tool carousel is a nice idea - consider that idea stolen. What I really love is the space for your son. I have 7yr old grandson that shadows me whenever I'm working with wood.

We just talked today and he decided it was time to get rid of the kid bench and he would just use mine when he wants. :) Works for me!

By far the #1 thing that makes it so much better is the height. If at all possible, try to make yours as tall as possible. It's so nice to move stock around vertically without having to worry about hitting things. Plus makes vertical storage of full length lumber possible. :)

I think your children will always remember and thank you for the valuable skills that they will have developed because of you providing that learning environment for them. A demonstration of great parenting skills on your part.
It's always challenging trying to come up with space saving strategies. I have a two car garage that is my shop and I barely have enough room to turn around in. Too many tools. Two years ago Home Depot had those large black tool chests on sale just before Christmas. I bought 2 of them. Back to back they provided a large work bench space and I mounted a vise on one end. The amount of tool storage they provided really reduced a lot of tool clutter in the shop. It's one strategy that was effective for me but it wouldn't necessarily work for everyone. Saving space in the shop and increasing efficiency is a constant challenge. Along with dust collection of course. All the best.
when i built our shed i used a plan from *WoodBlueprints. Com* and it had all the blueprints, supplies, materials, and list well laid out for me.
BTW you r welcome to share this idea of placement of the fan when you c how well it works. I don't have a you tube channel n never will and I believe there is a lot of wood working shops and bush crafters that would appreciate this hack. N I forgot my fan blade set about 10-12 inches off the floor that allows plenty of cool air to b sucked in n blown upward. Put a thermometer down about neck to belly button high take a reading turn on the fan n give it 5-10 minutes and c much the temperature rises. Makes a difference that quick.
I have a 10x17 tent with a drop cord running to it right now.....will be getting a new 12x20 monster shed next month and cant wait!!!!!

Love the down to earth approach to your shop ! Just goes to show u don't need the latest and greatest tools. Living in the Great White North ( Winnipeg, Manitoba ) I don't get to use my woodshop/garage too much in winter. I have done the same thing as u have and put all my tools on mobile bases so they can shoved out of the way when not needed. Now if I can only convince my wife that she does not need to park her car in the woodshop/garage I would be golden !

I have man hobbies: Wood working, motor cycles, cars, leather working, plastic molding and working. Consequently, i have many tools in my 24' x 24' garage workshop. And, like you say, my shop is in a constant stage of reworking to accommodate my hobbies. I must say that your shop is much more organized then mine, but I've got a few ideas watching your video, fastener storage (3 places in my shop, Clamp storage (1 in my shop which can be reduced to a smaller unit) Thank you so much!

You've got a new sub. I've had shops in small spaces in 6 different houses over 30 plus years. It's amazing what you can do with what you have, and how much you appreciate what you have when you use it to its potential. And there's nothing better than the sudden realization that a simple design change can turn that 6 inches of unused space into 2 full feet of valuable real estate. Then BAM!!! New tool time! I love this craft.

I love the rotating bench with 4 tools on it. It’s refreshing to see a woodworker with a similar budget and workshop size to me. Many other RUclipsrs have shops and tools totally out of reach of most people and their projects although nice to look at are unfortunately the same. Keep up the great work.
I am so happy to read this Darren! This is EXACTLY why I am striving to put my woodworking experiences on RUclips! Way too much attention going to these ridiculous shops with pockets deeper than I've ever known! They make people assume you have to have their setup to be successful or feel like a real woodworker. I want to second Darren's comments. I also have a small shop without a SawStop or Festool in sight. I'm always looking for ways to maximize the space. Also, love your rotating tool bench and the bench/area dedicated for you little guy. Your building projects and values. I"m trying very hard to limit my "wood shop" to a place to "build" wood projects; moving things like automotive, house painting materials, home repair STUFF and the tools and equipment that are only used occasionally out of the "build area". A separate small shed addition this summer will provide a little more storage and get the lumber inventory out of the shop.
Thanks Sam. Your video caught my eye as I have a storage shed wood shop as well here in NC that I was blessed to be able to get in my retirement years. Happy you got yours when you were younger and it is admirable you are including your children. Like most of us, my shop is my favorite spot on earth and it is amazing wha you can do with a small space. Appreciate shop tours of shops that are designed for those of us who have to work in small spaces with careful budgeting.

Thanks for sharing your shop. One thing in noticed that may cost you some money down the road. The speed controller used on your bench grinder is designed for brushed motors (AC/DC Universal type brush motor) . This type of controller reduces voltage to the brushed motor which in turn slows down the rotational speed. Most bench grinders are brush- less AC induction motors. Typically when an AC induction motor is operated at a reduced voltage the result in elevated amperage , excessive heat in the motor winding's and reduced torque. AC motor speed controllers also vary the frequency in proportion to the voltage. A voltage decrease (without reducing line frequency) results in a proportional increase in amperage, a 10% drop in voltage would result in a 10% increase in amperage. Your grinder is about 5 Amps so an increase of even 50% isn't going to pop a 15A breaker. On the other hand, torque reduction and temperature increase is exponential. The grinder may sit there and run forever at a reduced speed an no load but if you are really leaning into the grinder with your work while operating at a reduced speed the amperage will increase exponentially and with amps comes high winding temps. Too much load at slower speeds can stall the motor which can be catastrophic, locked rotor current will quickly destroy the windings and may never pop the breaker. An increase in winding temp of 10 degrees C will reduce motor life by 50%. Most people dont use a bench grinder for more than a few minutes at a time so it may never get hot enough to become an issue. And we're taking about a $60 grinder so its not going to bankrupt you if it fails. Just wanted to advise you and others that might read this that those controllers are not the best for use with brush-less motors.

I had a propane and kerosene heaters but found in winter I am closed in and the carbon monoxide was making me tired after a few minutes and opening a window wasn`t a choice. I bought an infrared box heater and it works well all winter in my 14x22 shop at -40 it keeps it at -5 C but i can skip working those days

You kind of already answered arods question during the video about what hand tools you would upgrade. You already upgraded to a degree from traditional lathe tools to two carbide tip tools. Im like you..I love all my tools. Both cheap and spendy 🙂. Great video.
That's a great idea of putting a kids area in the workshop. I remember my father did the same when I was about 5 or 6 and I think it was for same reason - to keep me out of his stuff. It didn't work once I got to about 10 or so, but by that stage I could drive a 4" nail in in two or three hits and I was building cupboards and furniture. But at least you can keep an eye on them and they'll pick things up. I should do that for the grandkids.

I don’t even have a wood shop at home! but I do have my graphic shop in a “storage shed” that I built, only 12x18. Smaller shops make you appreciate every square inch, and you have made great use of the space.

I have created a small "shop" (if you can call it that), in my, very crowded, basement. Everything is on wheels, so I can shuffle it.
For Dust Collection: I have a Harbor Freight 2 horse power, upright collector. The filter bags filter down to 5 microns, only. (BAD)
So I hung a 50 gal. trash bag inside the lower chip bag and replaced the upper bag with a plywood plate, with a 6 inch hole in the middle,
attached 6 inch round ducting, vented outside. No more,fine, choking dust in the basement (or the rest of the house). Cheap and works great.
Some folks have replaced the lower bag with a trash can, for more convenience. Many mods, for the HF collector on RUclips .
Be sure to look, before you buy.

It's been my #1 favorite shop organization project I've ever done -- highly recommend it!
Garage shop seems all ways trying to get layout so it works the best with what I have bad side is I’m custom knife maker and wood turner so need tools for metal works plus wood working tools for knife scales and for turning then area for leather work for custom leather sheaths as you can guess some things don’t like being mixed with the others but you do with what you got like your little shop set up👍thanks for the post ....
Knifemaking is really cool! The closest I have gotten was modding a cheap hatchet to be more of a bushcraft style. The video's on my channel if you're interested. It's nothing fancy though!

Great video. I always enjoy viewing other woodworkers shops and nice tour of the tools and descriptions of what you use them for and a little history of each one. Watched your video on building your shop and looking forward to watching the video on wood turning. Hope you show some of your work too. Remember the dust collection, even if it's hooking the tool up to a shop vac. Maybe a respirator too. Turning exotic woods is so important to have good dust collection and a respirator. Keep up the fine work.
I had sheetrock walls in my first small shop. I t was difficult to find space to hang or mount stuff. My second small shop got 3/8 inch plywood.= that workedmuch better.

Great shop like the layout you might want to try a mini split for heat. I have one in my shop works great. And air condition in the summer no fear fire.

Oh! I love your guys videos. I turned out 10x20 shed into a wood shop. Teaching my daughter what I know, which is limited! But keep trying. I do like the heated cabinet for your glues and such. I don't have heat to run in the shop unless I am in there. So I noticed my cabinet is just freezing all the time. I'll go check out that video you did on this.

I like the rotating table for you bench top tools. a number of years ago, I bought a Craftsman rotating tool bench. yours rotates horizontally, while the Craftsman rotates vertically. it only fits 3 tools. you pull the ends out of slots made to hold them and there is a spring loaded pin that stops the tools from rotating. you pull out on this pin and you can turn the table to gain access to the tool you need. then put the ends back in, as they help to stabilize the surface the tool is mounted on. as my shop is much smaller than yours and I do less stuff there, this works well for me.

Here is a hack that few people know about. You will be amazed at the difference it will make in the difference of the comfort of your work shop the year around. Get you a fan that will blow horizonal or vertical mine is a cheap 14 inch 4 speed settings fan think I it cost 15-20$. I keep it setting on the floor of my room blowing up towards the ceiling 24 / 7. Here is the science I learned years ago in flight school. Cool /cold air is much denser than warm air. Most people try this idea of moving the warmer air down to the floor. As they hang/ install the fan on ceiling blowing down. And it doesn't work out very well so they abandon the idea. Now I liken cold air to a base ball n warm air to a tennis ball. When the fan is blowing downward the warm air hits the cold air n bounces back up towards the ceiling. Now when the fan is place on the floor when the cold air hits the warm air it tends to go right through the warm air n push the warm air down. Not to mention the cooler air mingles with the warm air and warms up to a much even temp. Now I'm not telling you to go out n buy a dedicated fan until u have tested this idea do it as cheap as u possible can. I know with out a doubt u will be buying a dedicated fan.
The most dangerous time for grinding wheels to explode or fly apart is during speed changes I have read. Speed changing times are a good time to stand aside.

Im currently finishing my 12x20 dutch highwall barn , insulation done✅ osb walls✅ sheetrocking ceiling now , heat ✅ a/c✅ so i know how hard it is to set up a small shop i now use my garage for vehicle maintenance/welding so ill follow along with ya !! Good luck !!!!👍🏻

I also have had the same setup Ridgid table saw with router that you have. I have had them for over15 years. I really like the tablesaw.
Me too! My only complaint about the saw is a personal one.. it's taller than I'd like, but then again I'm short! Hahaha
