We are social beings, we need the accountability of the in-person groups! I completely agree! I’m 66 and made Lifetime over 30 years ago. It’s been a constant battle and despite the ups and downs, I’ve learned so many good habits and am very thankful for all that WW has done over the years to help me keep off the pounds I’ve worked hard to shed. I am still stunned when someone describes me as “thin”… I am athletic and fit, but hardly thin! At my “age” I’m just grateful I can do all the activities I love and not be on any prescription meds! Yes, maintenance is where the hard work begins! 😘

I do still think about food probably more than I should, but at this point, I believe the food and exercise is important for health. It took me years to finally realize that I was of a normal weight. The chat was also amazing. I really wish everyone was able to get approved for the medicine because at the moment there are a lot of people( including me) who have conditions that would improve or even completely disappear. Since we don't have type two diabetes, the other diseases that can also kill us but would be better with weight loss, doesn't seem to worry the insurance companies at all.

The honesty and openness of the stories shared resonated deeply with us. Reflecting on my past, I realize I've been guilty of body shaming, and I'm not proud of it. However, I'm grateful for the awareness and support I've gained from WW. Moving forward, I believe it's important for WW to consider caloric intake, especially with 'Free Point' foods, and to encourage private weigh-ins to avoid any feelings of shame. As Dr. Maya Angelou wisely said, 'When you know better, do better.' My daughter and I are committed to embracing this journey with courage and determination, 'putting on our grown ___ panties' and making the necessary shifts to succeed. This conversation was necessary and the guests were candid and thoughtful. The next step in the conversation is asking how we get the Healthcare industry (doctors and insurance) to start changing. I've had doctors bring me to tears and am paying out of pocket for my GLP1s because my insurance refuses to cover it. I need medically necessary hip surgery and can't get it until I get my BMI to a specific number. BMI is another topic that needs to be discussed. Why is it used as a screening tool when it's been proven to be discriminatory and, frankly, useless? It's been weaponized by the insurance industry to deny claims. BMI needs to be eliminated.

You know if you go the compound route and do senaglutide (ozempic) with a telehealth company the price is very affordable. At join Fridays it’s $129 a month plus $99 as a monthly fee. It’s stays that price even as the dose goes up. Tirzeptide (mournjaro) goes up with every increase in dose. I’ve found by just not eating out and decreasing the grocery bill you can free up at least $300 a month. Go slow and don’t titrate up every month. Good luck!!!

Insurance companies are the real villains when receiving this class of drugs because they often deny coverage. Look at the profits insurance companies are making. Insurance companies have huge profit margins. It is especially troubling when the Federal government requires us to carry health insurance. If our physician feels we should receive medicine to lower our health risks by lowering our weight, these insurance companies should provide coverage. Insurance companies and pharmacy benefit managers are the real reasons healthcare is expensive, not the cost of drugs.

This video has helped me tremendously. I’ve been overweight most of my life, including my childhood. I’ve always felt “less than” because of my weight. I’ve joined and quit Weight Watchers at least 25 times and I’m 64 years old. I reached goal weight in 1982 with WW, but gained 100+ pounds since then. It wasn’t until last year, my doctor advised I have metabolic syndrome and that is why I am not losing weight. I tried Rybelsus last year, lost weight, but had horrible side effects and quit taking it after 6 months. My doctor recently prescribed Mounjaro for me and I am hoping it will finally make a difference. I rarely leave the house as I’m embarrassed about how I look and feel. I look into the mirror and don’t know how this happened and barely recognize myself. It wasn’t until I watched the ABC Oprah special, it was my AHA moment. It’s not my fault, I have a disease. I need to treat this disease with compassion and learn how to love myself for the first time. After finishing this video, I am a bit frightened that I won’t be able to get the Mounjaro due to shortages. I will continue to watch this video as it’s the first time in my life, I now know I have an illness and will be treating my obesity as a disease in which I will use every tool available in the toolbox to fight this.

I am Jill! I hate taking pictures with others. I always take selfies, because I know my angles. Weight has been a big part of who I am, and honestly, I thought in my life, if I could not get the weight off, then what good am I in every other area in my life. A failure. I loved this conversation. Just knowing that others feel how I have felt for years. It matters how you talk to yourself and how you treat yourself. Being kind to others is important but it's important to be kind to yourself as well.

You can learn your angles in Pics with others, too! And there’s nothing wrong with that. Start practicing which spot to be in in a group (usually middle is the best!), what angle to tilt your head, which side to show (or straight on) and so on! When you’re old and grey or you lose people throughout life you’ll def wish you had pictures with them xo

They needed to have someone from the insurance companies and Medicare who refuse to cover Mounjaro and Ozempic for weight loss. Especially Medicare since it is when you are older that the obesity starts to affect you. And the drug companies charging such outrageous prices for the drugs is ridiculous when the prices are one half to a third of the cost in other countries.

Real talk, when this video first started and I heard Oprah's monologue, I was worried that this was going to be a lecture. But this was a nice discussion and I'm happy to see WW owning up to their mistakes. I'm still not a fan of weight loss drugs because I think the short and long term side effects are, and always have been, brushed under the rug by the medical community. My hope is that doctors and other clinical providers stop shaming their patients and stop providing sub-par medical care to the detriment of their patients because of body size.

In my opinion it comes down to how one was raised. When you have been told by your family members over and over that you are 1- the most beautiful girl in the world 2- the smartest girl in the world, like I have been told, you show up in a room knowing that this is who you truly are. And the audience feels the same. My grandmother always repeated to me " Always Walk with your back straight, your head straight your eyes straight and a smile on your face, so that they know that you come from a proud family..." . Great show!💥💗💐

I wanted to add something else to the conversation for us all to think about:
In the end, what will we be remembered for? Our weight....whether it is perfect or large...or our hugs, our laughs, the times we shared, the look in our eyes, the meals we cooked, etc.
I know my answer. These are the things about my grandparents that I recall most. Weight never crosses my mind.

AND a lot of studies on poor health outcomes and obesity don't compare results with thin people and poor health outcomes. Guess what. They're about the same. WW should be emphasizing this too...we'll see. I haven't watched the whole program yet.

I began on WW when I was 15, and my mom was 35. I gained 23 pounds, while Mom lost 25. At that time, WW would boo anyone who gained weight! Imagine how devastated I was. Over the years, I continued to be on and off Weight Watchers through my 60s. And I would lose weight and then gain it. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, had surgery and then struggled even more with weight. Last year, I again joined WW but I just couldn't do it anymore. And I had my doctor telling me it's all about what you eat vs what you put out physically. I wish!! This discussion has been a long time in coming. I still want to lose weight, but glad there are others who understand and support the fact that this is a disease, not something I just eat and ignore!

I CAN use willpower to CHOOSE walking and fruit. But it doesn’t just happen to a person. I have friends taking ozempic and eating 10,000 calories. That doesn’t make a person lose weight and losing weight is what lowers my blood pressure and my blood sugar and sleep apnea. So talking “around” the fact that a person has to make choices to lose weight by changing my selections for food and movement. And this is not a new concept and it has not been a secret. The motivation and inspiration to use what willpower I have- that’s what WW does for me.

I have been a life time member of WW for years. Unfortunately, the meeting I was attending never survived after Covid so I have to travel about 40 miles to attend a meeting. Because of this, I no longer have to weigh in monthly which helps greatly with travel. I have had ups and downs but never gotten totally away from the program. I decided in January to really get serious with my weight control again. I have lost all the weight I want to loose and am staying on track with the WW app, which I love. I eat a lot of zero point food and I try to track everything I eat and have been more than happy with my success. It is very important to track what you eat regularly. I am at my lowest weight in years, I walk a lot, play pickle ball with friends 4 days a week and will go in for my annual weigh in the end of July. If you make up your mind to succeed, you can certainly do so with weight watchers. It is definitely important to attend weekly meetings when you start and continue to do so until you successfully get your weight under control.

So far I’m liking what I’m hearing. Now let’s see some actual changes in how the points are formulated. If I stay within my daily points I’m at 800-1000 calories. If I go over I feel like a failure. I may not WANT to fill up on 0 point foods when I’ve only had 800 calories and I shouldn’t have to. Factor in calories so it’s more realistic. Once I feel like a failure I just quit and I’m far from the only one. I don’t believe I need medication to succeed. I did good with the origional points program and also points plus. It let you have the yogurt you want and didn’t cost half your daily value for 200 calories. This needs changed! The RUclipsrs doing WW double track because they’re not losing weight consistently either. WW is a business that’s making money off of us so as a paying member I expect the service I’m paying for..to work.

I agree! If you add the calories in the points, you are undereating!! That slows metabolism and also causes a feeling of deprivation. Obesity is a just a state of being fat, in itself it not a disease. Main reason is the result of compulsive overeating/gorging. Eating many more calories than your body needs. I know, I’m 60 lbs overweight and I struggle with it daily. For me, it’s my childhood/family dysfunction that I feel causes me to feel emotionally bereft and thus numb out with food. But I’ve also come to believe some of us are wired to be food addicts, just like any substance others may choose to deal with their anxiety. PS I tried the Ozempic for 2 weeks and suffered. One, it never curbed my appetite, so I continued to overeat and then had horrendous stomach pain and nausea. The med delays stomach emptying( I didn’t know that when tried). So as a compulsive overeater I now had all this excess food I consumed not passing through my digestive tract so I felt like hell. Only meds that work for me for truly decreasing the appetite are stimulants, but then you can’t sleep. I’m left with processing my emotions and behavior mod with the eating!

    • @desireewright4894
      @desireewright4894 6 месяцев назад +1

Have you gone to therapy to process your childhood dysfunction? I used food to cope with hard feelings, too. In therapy i learned that it’s okay to do that, but it’s important to have many different coping skills to choose from. Now I can choose an appropriate response. Sometimes that’s still snuggling up with ice cream, but it’s not my only solution anymore.

And whatever you eat that's processed like supposedly healthy breakfast cereals to salad dressings and other condiments are all bathed in sugar and preservatives. I will be 60 this year and all through my school years in the 60s and 70s it was all about having a figure like a Barbie Doll. Only those were the cool girls at school. Movie stars used to (and maybe still do) have a their lower rib(s) removed so they could fit in a size 1 or smaller for that small waist and hourglass figure. My mother was appalled at the lady next door when I was growing up because she kept telling my mom that wide feet are not acceptable for a lady and that my mom should have my little toes removed from my feet to narrow my feet and make them more lady-like.

Great presentations. I am working on trying to feel worthy but it is hard when there are daily reminders- airline seats you can fit in, restaurants seats, theater seats, so many things in our every day life are constant reminders that you are different from the majority of people,

WW made me feel guilty every time I started and stopped. Lost and regained until I felt like there was nothing I could do . I was lazy,no will power , it was all my fault. I needed the apology too. I started tirzempic 5 weeks ago. I am losing but I still have this fear of failure.

I watched the entire show and truly enjoyed the positive comments and learned a little on how to love myself and accept myself and feel less shame. However , I was left totally discouraged when the doctor stated that eating well and exercise is not enough, that it’s a combination of both. What about those of us who do not have access to the drugs? Is weight loss hopeless?

Weight loss WITHOUT medication is healthy (physically, emotionally & mentally) permanent weight loss that will last. I say this lovingly, but Oprah will gain the weight back again. She still isn't willing to address why she overeats (whether that be emotional or physical reason, or most likely now, a combination of both). The only other thing you need besides exercise (different kinds of exercise depending on how heavy you are) and eating healthy whole real food, is the good mental health component.) Doing the work to be mentally healthy and to know what caused you to overeat in this first place is necessary. Also, there is a component of being overweight that can be physical, not when you initially gain the weight........but years later after eating improperly for so long.
I'm not trying to irritate you but read your comment and was moved to write you. I'm not a professional in this field, but I'm in my 60's and suffered from weight issues for most of my life. But not anymore. And a first step I could tell you is don't focus on losing the weight or getting thinner, focus on getting healthier in every way. Much love to you even if you do end up taking medication. This can be such a difficult issue to deal with.
I do like that they are discussing not shaming yourself and to feel great about yourself even if you are overweight. There's so much more to us than what we weigh! This is SO true! The weight issue is important though because obesity can lead to health issues. But if people are just overweight and not obese, then I think that's fine as long as it's not causing them any unhappiness. I actually don't think being a bit overweight is necessarily unhealthy.

Yes I love this Wendy lady’s reply above. You absolutely can lose weight in a natural, whole way. It’s kind of stupid to say that we can’t. Is it difficult? Yes. Does it have ups and downs? Yes. I’ve lost 22 lbs (I had lost 40 but gained most back ugh), but this time I’m not following any kind of diet culture, I’m eating whole foods. Basically right now I’m staying away from anything processed. (95% anyway), and I’ve started moving my body more - going out to shoot hoops, daily walks, and I may start boxing again at a gym because that always helped me lose weight). There are so many other factors - overall happiness, stress (when you’re stressed or in “survival mode”, your body releases stress hormones that stop you from losing weight), sleep habits, spirituality, peace - soooo many factors but I do think natural weight loss is still the way to go. ❤

it is not hopeless at all! What helped me in my challenges was getting support for the mental aspect. I read the book of David Goggins, and it really helped me to get stronger mentally. Mental strenght is something that can be developed. It is quite astonishing, what we are capable of! You can do this! All the best to you!

I’m confused… you are sorry yet you change your program yearly… you say you’re sorry but your point system dings natural butter but a spray butter with chemicals is 0… almonds are higher points than a fun size snickers bar, avocado is the same points as chips. Oprah said “the 200 zeros killed me” so why don’t you have multiple plans for multiple ways of life. This feels like a marketing move to buy into memberships knowing you haven’t changed

Great start to the conversation. As mentioned early on, it will be a clunky conversation as it gets started. One point in the conversation where I was taken aback was Oprah's response to Kazia (introduced at 58:08) excitedly announcing that she was going to give up her Spanx (1:44:49). Yay, Kazia!!! After supporting and encouraging others who were going to do things that Oprah was comfortable with, such as Jill "wearing purple and getting in the picture", I felt that she shamed Kazia by her incredulous response (and continued humor), all because Oprah is not comfortable giving up her Spanx. Kazia set the bar high!
I believe we can claim victory over Diet Culture when women enmass "burn their Spanx".
