- Here's a review of one of the most popular compact 14" ultrabooks, the now 2-years old ThinkPad T450s.
It's true that there are already 2 successors on the market, the T460s and T470s, but I think it still is one of main contenders in the 14" ultrabooks battle.
The main specs of the laptop I've tested are: Intel® Core™ i7-5600U 2.60GHz, Broadwell, 14" Full HD IPS display, 12GB RAM, 128GB SSD.

Yea I love Lenovo and ThinkPads in general. I actually ended up buying this laptop off of a guy on craigslist about 2 years ago. He was selling it for $100 bucks because he said it was broken and I was determined to get it back up and running. The way he explained it to me was that it wouldn't power on so I grabbed it already under the impression that it would be a parts buy at the very least so I didnt do much more than examine the outside and then took it home because I was in a hurry.
I ended up stashing it in my desk for about 5 months and then one night I had some free time so I broke it out and was gonna strip it and then decided that I would see if I could get any kind of power out of the board fully expecting not to see anything. I plugged it in and then pressed power and then I realized how old the guy was and that he was saying that it wouldn't boot up when he told me its wouldn't turn on! I thought he meant it had no power at all. The poor guy must've just corrupted the hard drive and that was why it wasn't booting but he thought that it was broken.
He went out and bought himself a brand new MacBook less than a year after he bought this and then he made a mistake and sold it to me for $100 and all I had to do was just wipe the SSD which I wouldve done anyway if I bought it thinking it was fully functional. I loaded Ubuntu on and then went through the specs and it was literally the top of the line version i7 12GB ram 1TB SSD. I felt horrible because If I had time to plug it in when I went to grab it then I would've realized that the issue was not worth over 1500 dollars to fix and he could've gotten his money back for that wack ass MacBook too which made the situation even worse.
I ended up having to go through my phone bill which took forever because I didn't have a clue what day exactly I grabbed it but I knew which month so I had to narrow it down and call a shit load of numbers which was insane because I actually repair electronics for people through craigslist so I get a lot of incoming calls to ask questions and set up times to meet with people. After about 3 hours I was able to locate the number which happened to be his daughter, she was with him the day we met up and so I told her everything and that I couldn't do that to someone's granddad, and that I would drop it off the next day and he could keep the $100 on top since it was too late to return the Mac.
She was crying and thanking me and the next day I go over there and the guys there and I hand him the computer and said everything is back to how it was when he bought it. The guy ends up handing me the $100 bucks and then shakes my hand and tells me he doesn't want the PC back he just wanted shake my hand and say thankyou for making his daughter so happy with the call and the story. I tried giving it back and he told me to take my computer and get off his property before he called the cops (obviously joking around). I realized he wasn't taking it back and I said thank you. I managed to slip the 100 dollar bill in his daughters coat pocket when I hugged her and said goodbye (at least I hope it ended up in there because I was out of there) and I got the dopest $100 ThinkPad money could buy. Hopefully a fair amount of brownie points with karma later on down the road as well.
That's awesome, you're a good man James! The thought of someone doing something that honorable was worth more than a laptop and the $100 to him. You should be proud of yourself and the beautiful laptop now belongs to another good owner!

It and your thoughts on dealing with situations has earned you another friend if you'll accept me, (which it seems you will) I read it on 12/5/18 and the so called Christmas spirit eminates from your personality. Though for many people all year long. But if it's a way of life, it's as easy as breathing. Sorry for the rant but good deeds need to be recognized in these times where "making America great again" means treating our brothers and sisters with disdain, even hatred, kicking them out, locking them out, separating families, imprisoning them, etc. Many supporters of this sort of thinking proudly call themselves "Christians" which means "Christ like" yet I hasve seen ZERO (0) evidence of Christ acting in this manner toward anyone! The closest thing to it is when Christ drive the "money changers" (bankers) from the Temple on the Sabbath. ( Very "badass" I say) as he should have! Therefore, I hold those with those views to be absolutely counter to ANYTHING Christian at all, as to be outright hypocritical to the very doctrine they claim to corner the market on. Aftrer all, they obviously believe that if Christ stood before them, he would treat those coming from Mexico, let's say, EXACTLY as they do! To this I say, balderdash! Thank you for your moving story friend, and for bringing a smile to my old heart! I just went out and bought a secondhand T450s (with an FHD screen) based on your review. I'm going to create a video about installing/running Linux on this thing. A true thing of beauty.

its 2020 & i still use my T450s everyday. I have the i5 version with 8GB RAM. Play games like League of Legends, DOTA, Counter Strike online with 40 FPS & does all productivity stuff like email, office, youtube etc perfectly. Ive dropped it a couple times & still works like a charm. After this one im definitely getting a newer Thinkpad!

3rd quarter of 2019, still loving my T450s with extended battery.
Just bought one a week ago and installing Linux on it tonight. Managed to get the 1080p touchscreen model (about mid-range everywhere else) for $200. Super excited to get this thing up and going.
Just picked one up on eBay for $175 with an i5, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I replaced the aging internal battery and upgraded the external to an extended one, and I'm really loving this thing. I think I'm now officially a Thinkpad fan, though I already had the impression of liking their keyboards better than pretty much anything else on the market beforehand. :)
Still using one of these in 2022, for normal day to day use it continues to run like a champ on Linux (KDE Neon)
i've had this computer for ~3 years and it's the most reliable and versatile laptop i've had (used to own macbooks etc.). I combine this with a lenovo docking station which allows me to dock it when I get home into an external monitor. I've dropped this thing, used it extensively several days at a time and it doesn't lose a beat. Just make sure that you give it some TLC (dusting the interior every few months) and it'll keep going. The 2 issues I have would be the keyboard, which I've had to replace twice because of several keys falling out (very easy replacement and cheap to do) and the manufacturer's charger. However, the charger is also replaced cheaply (my last charger cost $20). I love my t450s

Definitely worth it. Just got myself a T450 with 16GB of RAM and the i5 processor and its a fantastic device. Runs anything i throw at it like a breeze and gets 15 hours of battery life with the extended battery

It's so damn beautiful. And so damn functional. And it runs Linux (almost) flawlessly. I agree - this is still one of the best laptops around, even in 2018.
What problems have you encountered with running linux?
There's a touchpad issue with the T450s and Linux. The problem is when you shut the lid so the T450s goes to sleep, then you open to the lid to wake it, the touchpad becomes "erratic" and eventually doesn't work at all. It's easily fixed by adding a kernel parameter to grub, but this wouldn't be something that's easy to find for a newcomer.
@@minordetails8059 is this common for all linux kernals? I plan on putting one on this after i purchase.
@flawlessvic - I believe this issue occurs regardless of the kernel version. It's very easy to fix though - just add the kernel parameter: pmouse.synaptics_intertouch=0 and then run $ sudo update-grub. I have made a video on Kubuntu 18.04 running on my T450s which shows this kernel parameter (it's the only video I've uploaded to RUclips so far).

T450s will be third Thinkpad i will buy for a year. First one was t540p(my dad needs cd reader so I choosen this one for him), next was p50s for architect work and now my uncle asked me find something for him, and thinkpad' my choise again. I have to work with iMac but every time i think about buying laptop, I think for Thinkpad again.
And about HP G4, if I would buy laptop for work. Unfortunately, Macbook pro from 2016 isnt so Pro as they positioning theyselfs
I owed a Lenovo T450s, T440P, T440, T460, X1 carbon with intel 5th and 6th gen CPU. I highly recommend get the T450s over the rest except if you really need the quad core CPU in a T440p or need 16gb ram upgradability. Otherwise try to get the T450s it is so much lighter than the T series I mentioned. The X1 carbons felt so thin like they might break you end up being overly careful with them instead of a throw into your bag and forget item. The T450s is compact like a block so it feels very strong unlike the X1 carbons yet it is thin like an ultrabook because the thinner screen bezel.

Panda LM140LF2L Full HD IPS panel.. was planning to put Linux because as soon as I made a ips display replacement with old LCD AUO one I lost the brightness control because panda ips panel isn't whitelisted in Lenovo but I am using pango brightness app to control brightness... thinkpad 💜💜❤️
Physically there is no difference between T440s vs T450s except the touchpad, so technically even the T440s makes a great sense even in 2018 for day to day use.
SFseis Do you know if the T450s non touch screen is better quality than the touch model?
I believe that the T450s is a touchscreen and the t440s is not a touch screen.

yes it's very fast and light weight it's so comfortable for typing i recommend it for you
Nope. My sister had it and within a few months the trackpad stopped working. (She switched to a MacBook Air M1)

@@diverge1337 I can't say. I'm using it mostly for pentesting. Along with Win10 I'm using Parrot OS through VMware plus 4 browsers with more than 100 tabs open and it works great. I never thought of replacing not once in those 4 years I own it.

I hate that volume control is behind fn button. Even my 17" game laptop, which has a lot of room does not have separate volume buttons. I believe 430 Thinkpad still had those...

I'd go with the i7 version of the T450s (personally). I've had work laptops with touchscreens, and just never use them (the touchscreen, that is - I prefer a keyboard and mouse).

How comes your keyboard layout is different from mine. The Enter key on mine is diagonal and also marked with letters. Same for the Backspace. Is this the T450s or just the T450?

The T430s i5-3320, is actually faster than the T450s. The T450s, has a chunk of wood for a CPU, VERY slow. One of the few ThinkPads, I'd never consider for purchase.
i7 5th gen performs noticably better than i5 3rd gen whereas i5 5th gen performs slightly worse but very close according to notebookcheck. 5th gen CPU's have more than half of the TDP therefore more efficient and battery friendly. I think it is worth going for considering performance difference is very tiny.

hot swappable battery with an optional 72whr battery, non soldered RAM, better keyboard with more key travel, easily replaceable keyboard, definitely more rugged than a thin little X1C as well.

No, this isn’t a good laptop for gaming due to it only having integrated intel graphics.
Jason I bought one a couple days ago and it’s running gta smoothly on medium settings, definitely works and plays league of legends perfectly.
