The last iteration, gen 10, had heat issues because the slim laptop was not built for the energy output of the Intel P series CPU. Gen 11 version of the X1 Carbon with Intel 13th gen U series CPU has far better heat management. It is a great laptop for the traveling business professionals. Good battery life with excellent single core performance without heat.

My first exposure to the ThinkPad was back in the early 2000s when it was part of the IBM line; it was my work laptop. It had the typing experience that other laptop makers aspired to, and the nub and trackpad are iconic. Great machines. Thanks for the review.

I've got a Gen 10 for work, and I do love it. It's a beast and can handle anything I throw at it. It's controversial for ThinkPad fans, I know, but I absolutely hate the eraser. It gets in the way. If you're an advanced user, you don’t use a mouse. I do wish they would bring the soundbar over from the Yoga series.

I bought one of them on release date, maxed out the config with 1370p, 64gb ddr5-7500 and swapped out with a WDBlack 4Tb 4.0 nvme. Linux is working PERFECTLY out of the box and this laptop is ridicoulsly fast. Once used for a week, I throw away macbook pro M1 as main laptop and Intel NUC 11 as main desktop PC. This blasts both of them in every tasks, including VMs and heavy docker with many containers.
One more thing. @home and @work, I use it in pair with LG43''4k display at 4k resolution with just one USBC cable for video and charging. Simply put on the table, plug the cable and that's it. Awesome.

@Rednunzio It depends on the tool you're using and also on the language. I'm using a lot of Python and the main advantage in using this language comes by linux, not by the hardware. This laptop is faster than an M2 in many aspects, especially when you run software Docker/VMs written for X86 and you don't need to pass from Rosetta2

I had an older version as a work laptop and man that thing sucked. Audio speakers died in a month, the touch pad was stopping to work and I had to hard reset every time, microphone was turning off if I started Docker so I could not participate in meetings(a software bug likely, but still). Honestly I've never had a more buggy laptop, except for 2014 MBP but it memory died just after the warranty expired. I think if I get my old Acer Aspire laptop from 2007 it will still work fine. Interestingly my current company gave me a slow ThinkPad and it works, I have a budget Lenovo Ideapad and it works too, unlike that wretched Carbon, but I mainly use MBP 2021 and I believe contemporary macbooks are much better for coding. Battery life sometimes not enough for 1h if you are sharing screen in teams. Windows 11 and firmware updates are frequent AF and poorly tested. I own multiple thinkpads and bought a ThinkPad X1 carbon i7 with the upgraded OLED panel a few months ago. It was a really nice notebook but ultimately I ended up returning it after a week for two reasons. 1) windows 11 is a confused mess and 2) with the i7 and the upgraded OLED panel the battery life was abysmal (3-4 hours of moderate use). For the kind of money I spent I was really disappointed. Ended up going with an M2 MacBook pro and it's a significantly better experience for all day battery life editing photos. MacOS isn't perfect but it's so much better than Windows 11 which is a complete disappointment.

I would NOT recommend this build. Also this specific screen had extremely over saturated colours on non colour managed applications like web browsers. Even after using a spyder calibrator I did not enjoy how non colour managed apps looked (Adobe apps looked fine).
Maybe the 11th gen X1s are better or of you don't need Adobe apps Linux would surely be better than Windows 11 which is a such a disaster.

You won’t get any meaningful negative views that really matter in this review as it is sponsored by the manufacturer. In every other review, for example, there are frequent references to the fact that USB C is not on both sides as this is irritating for charging wire route purposes but suddenly here this video makes no reference to this shortcoming. Further, this review makes a benefit that the fan noise is under 40 dB yet you can certainly hear the fans in a meeting. Not great even under normal mixed productivity use but this review makes no mention of it. I usually like Matthew’s work but he should avoid the temptation to sully his reputation by accepting sponsorship, from the manufacturer of the product he is reviewing. Bad call. This laptop might well be good for certain use cases but it is far from great.

Why would you get this laptop for video editing? X1 Carbon line is built for traveling business consultants, sales reps, and managers. The OLED screen is for the managers of course because it reduces battery life.
For professional video editing the laptops are MacBook Pros, Asus ZenBook Pros, Dell XPS 15/17, and Lenovo Yoga line. MacBook Pros are at the top of the video editing hierarchy. Asus is 2nd place. Everyone else is fighting for 3rd.

They should remove the Lenovo logo tag on the top cover. It is ok to imprint it on the screen or keyboard frame. “Lenovo” logo is much less cool than “ThinkPad” logo.

One day, about ten years ago, my laptop Thinkpad X220 refused to boot the operating system from the ssd. At that moment, I was in a hotel in a small city in the far north, and I urgently needed this laptop to perform urgent tasks. In this situation, I simply booted a second operating system that was pre-installed on the second hard drive. Since then, I have believed that a laptop has no right to be called a “business laptop” if it does not have a second drive on which to install a second system. I have the same opinion regarding laptops without a flashlight (the X220 laptop had a flashlight «ThinkLight»), regarding laptops without a trackpoint, and, more recently, laptops without customizable backlighting for each key, and laptops with matrices subject to PWM flicker. And unfortunately, not a single modern laptop fits these requirements. I hope that Lenovo will someday release something that meets all these conditions, or ASUS will overtake them if they add a trackpoint to the ASUS ExpertBook B5 Flip IPS.

Not booting Windows would be a red flag for me, and I can confirm that I used to buy ThinkPads, but poor QC and blue screen of death meant I gave up on them, and after two Dells that died a year or so after warranty, I moved to Macs, and I have a 12-y-o and 7-y-o MB Pro that still run! So no to Lenovo and no to Windows for me!

    • @intellectbuilder
      @intellectbuilder 7 месяцев назад

In my practice, this was an isolated case, and it was not caused by the operating system. I have no complaints about Windows other than their new Start Menu. I described in my post one example of why having a second drive is important. But people's lives depend on the reliability of some laptops, and for this reason, increased fault tolerance is required from these devices. For many businessmen, it is important that the failure of the ssd during an important business meeting cannot cause its interruption, or cause the loss of at least one minute of work records. Therefore, it is important that information is continuously duplicated onto a second disk for backup. But many modern laptops do not have a second drive, and for some reason manufacturers position them as business laptops.

@@intellectbuilder for the last 15 years, I've always backed up my data to the cloud with end-to-end encryption. This is so if I lose the laptop I have a backup. No point having a second drive if it's stolen or lost or destroyed in an accident. I think the vast majority of people I deal with in business use the cloud now though initially they were wary of that.

You just cannot adjust the RAM on the Lenovo T14 AMD CPU versions. Also, the Intel versions usually have better single core performance on the business laptops.
The AMD CPU will provide better battery life, video editing performance, gaming, and multi-core performance (for extreme levels of CPU work).

The only thing that annoys me about Lenovo is their crappy way of pricing their laptops to oblivion and having all these "sales" to knock them down to the price they should be. And shipping times are all over the place depending on the laptop and configuration. Apple laptops are expensive but at least you always know what the going price should be and whether what you are getting is a deal or not. Also, I wish they'd put a haptic touchpad on it so it could compete with Apple in that department.

With all due respect, but I already used to work with silent laptops (MBP M1) and for me ANY noise generated by the cpu cooler in the laptop is just unforgiving. BUT as Apple is making worse and worse products every new generation, I'm really waiting for ARM equipped laptops on which I could run Linux OS and stop overpaying for apple logo for... no added value but rather more constrain system.

I have a X1 Yoga gen 3 from 2018 and it is rock solid still - with no noticeable wear and tear. The laptops clean up nicely if you take care of them and ironically, I believe it still has (or may have just expired) the On-site warranty which can be extended well past 3 years.

Thinkpad T14s AMD is what you want. It is very very very close to the X1 in quality and premium feel but with better thermals and that sweet AMD processor and iGPU. I own the T14s Gen 3 (amd) and I can never go back to an X1 Carbon. Blows it out of the water and with better battery life!
