I was at this show and the entire show was phenomenal. During the beginning of Do The Evolution, Ed was actually trying to help the crowd settle down because the stage was bouncing. Keep in mind, Pearl Jam had been through Roskilde a few years earlier.
After this song, a woman came on stage and told Ed that it was the 4th time in history at MSG that the stage bounced. The other groups that managed that were Iron Maiden, Grateful Dead, and Bruce Springsteen.
Yep! PJ had 9 people trampled to death at a festival concert 3 years prior, so they've been HYPER-vigilant for safety since then (oftentimes stopping between [or even rarely during!] songs to tell dangerous crowds to take 3 steps back) and at this show at MSG, the stage was literally BOUNCING and they had no idea that it was something that actually happened as a response to the crowd being into it, and they thought they and the crowd might be in danger. They wanted to get through the song, but they asked around afterward (DTE was the end of the first set) whether it was safe or not, and the woman from MSG came back and said what Greg mentioned above.
The fun part was... the next time they played MSG? They tried to get the stage bouncing as much as they could. :)
I always prefer the live versions, but I encourage you to watch the official video. It is a animated video done by Todd McFarlane, and has a Heavy Metal movie feel to it, showing mans destructive nature from the dawn of man to a unwritten future.
Ed Vocals out of control by design- same as the record and on point as always
That is one of my all-time favorite Pearl Jam songs. I love seeing it live! Great review. As usual I enjoyed all of your commentary keep up the great work.
I Was in the crowd about 20 rows back for this. Ed talked after that song how the band was nervous during song because the stage was shaking during the song he brought up one of the MSG concert staff who told him stage had only ever shook like that for Iron Maiden, Bruce Springsteen & I think one other band can’t recall...great night they broke the 11:00 curfew & had to pay a fine 🤘
I loved how your first few PJ reactions were like "the one guitarist....." and now we get power ups for the lean mean techincally sound solo machine that is Stone! 🤘🤘🤘
For your own viewing pleasure, check out the music video. It’s pretty fantastic.
The stage was bouncing that's why he was on his knees. Mike, Jeff, Stone and Matt do the high pitch vocals the choir boys. His voice sounds the same on the album.
im sitting in my student studio half an hour past midnight, getting stoned and missing home, and this video just made me feel like im back in my family's living room again. thanks Dave, you rock
Eddie is on his knees because the stage started bouncing. He talks about it in the video when they come back on stage.
Yeah, his vocal for this track, to me, are perfect for the song. It cleary does not show the beauty of his voice, but the song is almost a future rendition of the wold. The dystopian voice of the future. The mad feel of this track is like a warning, a chaos we dont want, but also playing with the theme of a dance song, "Do the Evolution"
Thanks for reacting. if you skip the encore break a bit about 1 minute 40 s, eddie come back to stage accompanied by someon,e maybe the Garden management, as during that last song the stage was bouncing up and down due to the crowd enjoying the song, and it only happen to few people in MSG: Grateful Dead, Bruce Sprinsgsteen and Iron Maiden (and then Mike plays a short riff of Number of The Beast)....
I'm quite late on that reaction, but this one really needs a reaction to the official video. It is probably the best music video of all time IMO. One of my all time favorite Pearl Jam song also. It's so great.
Pretty sure it’s stone getting up there but all of them do the hallelujah choir. Always a rocker. There is the other 2 tracks I mentioned for a stone solo!
Havent heard your review of this yet but so excited you got to this one! The performance for this on David Letterman is one of the more perfect version. Little more uptempo than the stdio version, which aslo seems like the better idea
Solid review. Could be wrong, but could be Stone doing the higher pitch. He wrote the song as well. I'm not the biggest music video guy, but this music video is amazing... and yes lol his voice sounds almost identical to the album ... nice job 🤙... doodoo do do doodoodoo
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO They're still in my head they don't need reinforcing.....I haven't had a good nights sleep in over 2 months because of those....
Stone usually provides the backing vocals in the higher register. Also, if you want to see him solo for several minutes, and you haven't already put this in your queue, check out their cover of Neil Young's “Fuckin' Up”: ruclips.net/video/IyFkgzftxyI/видео.html
It's already in the que actually.
This song makes me speed
Listen to the studio version if you have a chance. It really builds and there is some production things that make it an interesting song.
Pearl Jam usually don't block.
Not usually....but I have had 5 Pearl Jam reaction videos blocked, so I don't like taking chances.
@@THEDavidHeretic Depends on who is playing in. If it's somebody other than the band, their hands are still tied to a certain degree. You're never going to win with NBC/SNL because there have been some amazing performances on that show by tremendous talents. PJ directly after Kurt's death is just a standout. You wouldn't know it either if you weren't a fan of the bands but for those of us that were, Eddie makes a gesture at the end of the show that was probably lost on most people but I broke down like a pile of rocks. My husband had no idea why I was so upset. So it kills me that NBC blocks this along with booking Fear that John Belushi insisted on. Plus there's been some criminally funny ones in there too. Sorry, personal rant. I know it's your cross to bear but I doubt very much that it's PJ making it difficult for you. It's just not their style.
I'd love to see you react to a perfect circle live in Japan with the original line up. The songs they play are 3 Libras and thinking of you. It's similar to the tool sober video with him out front center which is very rare.
Even if you only did the first song that would be okay. Three Libras is more melodic and thinking of you is harder. Thank you for your videos.

They're both already in the que.
You'll go nuts with Buenos Aires 05' version
"ITS HERD BEHAVIOR"
Yikes! Should have done the entire video. It’s what makes this video special.
It's Stone
They all did it, but one stay with the higher note..make sense
THE STAGE WAS BOUNCING,,,, BOTH JEFF AND MATT EXCHANGED GLANCES AT EDDIE,,,, WATCH ENTIRE VIDEO EDDIE MENTIONS IT,
Stone
Could it make your play list? If not, why?
Do The Evolution on my playlist? Hmmmmmm....maybe not for the gym, but I could totally see it on my "Driving To Vegas" playlist.....just gotta watch my speed.
The high part was probably Jeff.
Hi.
If you want more Stone, you must review and react the Pearl Jam song "Mankind".It will surprise you and amuse you (and if the video you can see is that of the band's official channel, much better). Trust me.
And for more Pearl Jam, two great songs: "Immortality" and "Breath" (for me, the unofficial hymn of the band)
Thanks and enjoy.
Like others have said, you really should check out the music video to this one, even if you don't react to it. It's one of those rare times where the song and the video compliment each other just perfectly. Sum is greater than it's parts type of thing!

I'll definitely check it out, thank you for supplying the link to the correct video.
@@THEDavidHeretic my pleasure!
@@THEDavidHeretic Also, love to hear your thoughts if/when you watch it.
The video was definitely made to fit the song, not the other way around. The video fit the song perfectly in may ways; from tempo, to flow, to even color usage on the dynamics. Very creative indeed.
If u like this, u can check out KYUSS (like Space Cadet ruclips.net/video/dq8YcRi7DD4/видео.html) or BRANT BJORK (like too many chiefs, not enough indians ruclips.net/video/5HogA9u4CYc/видео.html)
Added to the que
Hope you have had a chance to watch the actual video....a lot of truth behind anthropologistic behavior....and it's dominance of weapon and comfort advancements just to conquer and secure a convenient lifestyle without respect for everything else that provides, creates, cleans, nurtures, and sustains the existence of all life. Oh yeah....it's all in that video. ✌
One of the best songs to drive to, especially if youre in a hurry and driving on the shoulder and zipping in and out of traffic. However, I dont recommend it :)
Yeeeeeeaaaaaaah.....definitely not something I would recommend either.....they pull you over a lot faster when you do that.....not that I would know form personal experience or anything like that...~whistling innocently~.....
🤣😂🤣
Yeah the stage was bouncing and it had only happened with just 4 bands before...
And Mike Mcready has the best solos!! Way better than Stone's 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
obviously
