  • Watch to see the difference adding a 12 volt battery can make to a Power Wheels car when you wire it in series with the original 12 volt battery. A 24 volt Power Wheels is pretty fast. I do not suggest that anyone try this at home, this video is for your entertainment only.

    FYI for anyone in the future doing this.. the entire center section is removable and contains all the factory wiring all the way from batter to pedal. You can use this same space and only need to drill trough the firewall to the front compartment.

      How'd the up grade on your sons utv work out? I got the 12v utv for my daughter. It came with 2, 12v 7ah batteries but wired as a 12v battery. The utv is super slow i really want to wire these batteries in series . I was just worried I ight blow the esc or motors. Any luck with getting your sons to run 24 volt?

      You need to have a 24 volt motor to go with the battery. If the motor is 12 volt then it will burn out with a 24 volt battery after awhile.

    • @wrestlerx8494
      @wrestlerx8494 2 года назад

      @bibliata even if he just has 2 separate 12 volt batteries the motor will still burn out if he is running both batteries on a motor that is only 12 volt. So I don't know how he did it.

    • @wrestlerx8494
      @wrestlerx8494 2 года назад

      @bibliata ok because I have a power wheels that I got for free because someone cut the battery wires and it is missing the battery but I believe it does have a 12v motor in it.
      I was going to strip the ends of the wires inside of the power wheels that are cut and use alligator clips to connect to the stripped ends and the other end clip to a 12v battery terminal and see if it works. I could probably use two 12v batteries and do what he did in this video, but I am afraid that a 12v motor will burn out if I use two 12v= 24v battery.

    Your struggle is understanding series vs parallel, one way will still give you 12v but double the life but hooking neg to positive on second will give you 24v. RUclips has some great videos for understanding basic electrical.

      If you do the way that keeps it at 12 volts, will that help give any extra power too? Or no none just last longer? I am like this guy, and my 6 yr old and 4 yr old ride together and have growed since battery died in theirs. Iv been watching g does for months trying to decide what to do that can give them more power, that won't strip it out!

    • @Crusader143d
      @Crusader143d 4 года назад +1

      @@leahrodriquez1349 No, more volts (pressure) allows more current (amps) which gives more power (watts).
      Power equation: Power (W) = Volts x Amps.
      example: 12 volts x 9 amps = 108 watts. In a series circuit, voltage adds up, in a parallel circuit, voltage stays the same. In order for more current to flow, you need more voltage.
      example 2: 24v x 9 a = 216 watts. Watts is a measurement of work accomplished in the means of heat or mechanical movement.
      In parallel circuit, amperage adds up instead of voltage.
      I hope this helped.

      @@Crusader143d a very easy way to do what was done in this video with few or no issues is to simply replace the 12 v motor with a 24 v and then connect the two 12 v batteries the way he showed. Otherwise if you leave the 12 v motor then it will eventually burn out if you are trying to use 24 v battery in tandem.

    To find your speed with distance and time: V=d/t so V=(85)/10.9 And V=(85)/6.05. V= 7.80 and 14.05. Then convert Velocity to speed. S=V/1.466 S=7.80/1.466 and S=14.05/1.465. S=5.32 MPH S=9.58 for an increase of 4.26MPH.

    This is the same set up for my wee girls big 2 seater megastar Rocket Quattro 12v, as it has two 6v batterys wired up same way your diagram says. So in theory I should be able to stick 2 12v battery & it would work but I think this would blow the Motor, especially if you did not use another fuse. I think I would just wire another battery to run the lights & radio on NY kids car. That would in turn make let the Motor run in a full 12v. 🤔 I might try that. As the thing has lights every where, even on the wheels 🙈. Cool little buggy & it defo was speeded up for sure. Much faster second run. ✌

    Good job, taking your time and making sure everything is done right and SAFE is nothing to be ashamed of, if more folks took their time with mapping out how to do their electrical fixes there would be a lot less injuries. If you are thinking of other mods, those SLA batteries can be fast charged with up to 10-12 amps safely. Therefore, you can use an automatic battery charger for a car. I like the automatic chargers that sense 6 or 12 volt and switch to float (trickle charge) once the batteries are charged to prevent overcharging.
    It is much faster to charge up the batteries than with those trickle chargers at .5 amp to 2 amps.

    WARNING!!! You forgot the fuse!MUST install an in line fuse!!! I've modded many powerwheels and depending on the motor and gear box ratio some motors and wires get hotter than others but they all get really really HOT after 24v conversions because all the wiring is 12 AWG size wire rated for a max of 30AMP constant current draw before a melt down can occur and those batteries will draw rite at 28/29amps at 24 volts. Stay safe by installing the 30AMP inline fuse between the positive and negative connections of the two batteries ran in series or you WILL eventually melt the wires and some have even caught fire! So you MUST install the fuse. A few additional things to NOTE! If upgrading to 24v, DO NOT try to add more traction because the gears are plastic and will strip if theres to much grip or resistance. Due to faster rpms the brushes in the motors burn up a lot faster but can find new motors online as well as other upgrades. I recommend not getting any 12v SLA batteries over 9ah that will be wired in series. I've found that if you were to install two 12v 12ah batteries the initial current load tends to surpass 30amps and constantly blows the fuses. Also, its not good for the battery (life) to be powered in series if the battery specs are rated different (as done in this video). It tends to shorten battery cells of the smaller rated battery so batteries should match.

      2) Can you clarify if the fuse goes here: www.reddit.com/r/electronics/comments/eybcwj/in_progress_powerwheels_upgrade/
      3)I am planning on adding a significant counterweight to the front so we have more traction and prevent wheelies but would that matter for a person who is 175 pounds?

      @@sriramneravati5048 1) Yes and No it depends on how they are wired together. 2)12v/9,5ah batteries wired in parallel will increase the ah (amp hour) to 19ah wich means the battery will just last longer for more riding time. Or, 2)12v/9,5ah wired in series increases the volts to 24v/9,5ah which means the more volts the faster it goes.
      2)If wired in Parallel you technically dont need a fuse. Just wire the batteries positive to positive and the negative to negative. For PowerWheels white wire is power (+) and the black wire is ground(-) so you'd connect the white motor whire to the positive side of one of the batteries and the black motor wire to the negative side of the second battery. If wired in series, you will need to add a 30amp inline fuse connecting the positive of one battery to the negative of the second battery. Then connect the white motor wire to the available positive terminal and the black motor wire to the available negative terminal of second battery.
      3)Its ok to add some weight to the front for better grip but keep in mind they are mostly plastic so over time the front wheel hubs will lean inward. However, It is better to add some other means of grip to front tires for more traction rather than adding more weight. For example the rubber from a bicycle tire inner tube or even swaping out the front tires with actual rubber tires works best. Most powerwheels wont tip nor do wheelies unless your an adult sitting on the very back of the machine. The 24v conversion will just spin the rear tires untill it picks up momentum. The rear plastic tires just wont grip enough to pop wheelies before you strip out the plastic gears inside the gearbox. Thats why I stated in my original post its best to not add grip to rear tires. Besides its way more fun to have the rear tires spin because then you can do donuts, drift corners and even do figure 8 pattern burnouts. They are a blast for kids to drive once modified!!! Hope all that helps. Enjoy!

      @@yourlips_myassah Thanks for the reply, also yes I am a 6'1" adult planning on making one of these. I found a website where I can get 36V batteries, Metal gearboxes for the car. I live on a very hilly campus and my friend and I are trying to ride up and down the hills. We are planning on putting a little bit rubber on the front wheels and maybe even the back because we will have metal gearboxes.

    Based on the video, it looks like you didn't include the inline fuse Box (I couldn't see it wired when you showed both batteries and the underside of the vehicle). When you did install the fuse, did you experience blown fuses when the faster speed was engaged? If so, how did you resolve?
    Did you remove the circuit breaker in the power wheel battery?
    Long story short, ours works in low speed, but once we push the gear shift forward, it rides for a second and then fuse blows.

    • @michealkinney6205

      It really depends on how much current/ampere your particular car/motors pull. I've personally never blown one at 18 volts with the fuse that came with them. You might want to try taking off the inline fuse, put some load on the car, drive it around with a multi-meter on it, and see what the current draw is. Otherwise you might need to find out the motor used and consult the spec sheets.

    Rhino liner or herculiner spray on the tires will give it traction, you may need to reapply every other week but that's what I did with my son's jeep, it definitely moves on tarmac, it slips every now and then but it's better than just plastic

      Cobey Huish we haven’t had any issues with the two motors getting hot but the right side motor did strip a gear. I’m pretty sure that if my kids had of taken turns riding in the car, the tires could have broke traction when needed and it would still be running as it should. The problem was all three kids tried to ride together and with all the weight it couldn’t break traction or lunge forward so the gear gave way. Looking for a replacement gear or motor for that now. I’m gonna keep it boosted to 24 volts and make them ride one at a time.
