  • Why did Rachel steal her father's idols? (Genesis 31:19)
In Genesis 31:17-21 NKJV we read:
17 Then Jacob rose and set his sons and his wives on camels. 18 And he carried away all his livestock and all his possessions which he had gained, his acquired livestock which he had gained in Padan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan. 19 Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the household idols that were her father’s.
Clearly though Laban had idols. Though Jacob being a man of God why would his wife steal her father's idols?

It seems pretty obvious to me that she stole them thinking they might help her to become pregnant. Her sister had 6 sons, she had 1. Also, Laban had not given Jacob dowries for either girl, so she felt entitled to them. The fact that she didn't tell her husband shows she knew that what she did was not right.

I think Rachel’s motive : she was mad at her father Laban. It was revenge for : she waited 7years to marry Jacob, and while she was getting dressed for her wedding- her father (deceived her and Jacob) gave her sister to her fiancé to marry!! Much later, It was her one act ( her deceit ) that cost her everything- Jacob not knowing she took worthless idols, spoke death over her (Gen31:32) and she died in childbirth. The spirit of deceit bounced from one person to another Rebecca, Laban, Jacob, Rachel and then Jacob’s sons over Rachel’s child Joseph.
Working things out in our own strength and ability, instead of waiting on God, costs us dearly.

It was not revenge. Rachel pbuh, didn't want her father to worship false Idols,
so she stole them to destroy later.
Rachel and Jacob knew her father was going to deceive him so they made signs. When Leah pbuh was to be married, Rachel gave her the signs out of love for her sister.

Its interesting that in revelation God uses an unclean woman riding a beast as a symbol of mystery Babylon. An unclean woman in Israel custom is a woman having her period. Considering this tradition, the practical woman was contemplating staking her claim on her father’s assets in the future.

According to the Book of Yashar (Jasher),
those household idols are divination items which with a ritual could tell you where something missing is. Which is why Rachel took it so that Laban could not locate them.

That book is not inspired scripture, so it may contain inaccurate accounts, but it does make sense within context and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the case. Genesis 30:27 shows that Laban claimed to perform a sort of divination, which presumably was done with these idols.

There were no gods. They couldn't do anything for Laban or against Jakob, they were made from human hands., That is why they have no power at all! It was the false faith of Rachel and of Laban that they believed that these so-called gods could do something for or against them. My Ancient History professor said that these household idols, in addition to being objects of religious devotion, were also tokens of inheritance. That these objects could be brought forth after Laban’s death as tokens - proof - of Jacob’s right to Laban’s wealth as Laban’s heir. I haven’t read this story in a long time. Were there brothers or other male relatives who might have contested Jacob’s right to the wealth he took away with him when he fled? Remember, in ancient times, inheritance did not usually flow to daughters - only to male heirs. Other male heirs might have disputed the wealth that Jacob amassed per his VERBAL agreement with Laban (fourteen years of service in return to or his wives, children, and all the “striped” sheep). According to this hypothesis, Rachel was simply trying to preserve some evidence in case of a dispute with her father’s tribe over this wealth. Jacob, on the other hand, was done with trickery and underhanded dealing. He didn’t need to have a feud with his wives’ kin. The fact that he offers his brother half his wealth as a peace offering to end THEIR feud shows his change of heart. Rachel hoped to preserve Jacob’s wealth in the event of a dispute with her male kin. Jacob had finally reached the point where amassing wealth was no longer that important to him. If Laban’s male kin disputed his right to his wealth, he wasn’t going to fight with them over it. So, he disposed of the idols and looked to God as his inheritance.

In the book of Jasher, Jewish literature states that in the land where Laban lived, the people all had gods that they would make. The scripture states that it involved the unalive head of a firstborn, it doesn't really say if it was human or animal, and that they would put candles around it and summon spirits from the stars, which would embody the head and it was able to tell predict the future. In the Book of Jasher it states that she took them so Laban couldn't use them to find them, the book goes on later to say that Laban used his neighbor's gods to find them. Listen to the Book of Jasher it tells a lot about their intimate thoughts and puts you there in the story. Pray the LORD shows us wisdom and gives us understanding. In Jesus' name AMEN amen

You didnt’ mention at least two other theories. She may have taken the gods for revenge. Laben did Jacob wrong-very wrong, so as Rachael loved her husband she may have sought to harm her father by stealing something fundamental and precious to him. Another idea is that perhaps these gods represented some kind of lineage, familial authority, or even influenced inheritance of wealth in some way…a pegan version of the birthright, so Rachael may have been acting shrewdly here to effectively take over some influence in the family for herself and Jacob.

We belong to God, just as Jesus does:
Every person has come from the foreknowledge of God the Father, even Jesus. However, Satan has interfered in our thinking, causing separation between God and man. It was the will of God the Father to send his Son to deliver us from sin. It was Jesus who came to seek and save that which was lost (Luke 19:10), for there are many bodies joined to one spirit-and that spirit belongs to God the Father. God gave life to ALL things. In these scriptures, Jesus speaks of God giving him life (John 6:57, John 5:26). Jesus came to reconcile us back to the only true God (John 17:3), of whom all things consist and came from (1 Corin 8:6). As it is written In John 17:21-22, we are to become one even as they are one. We already know all things, but it is God's Holy Spirit that will bring all things to our remembrance (John 14:26).

But this will never happen without his Holy Spirit, which is the revealer of God’s word. You say I don’t know Jesus, that’s not the question, but does Jesus knows me. I know without any doubt whatsoever that I belongs to God, because Jesus himself told me so. He always walks in the room, allowing us to see him, doing great wonders right before our very eyes. Jesus still looks up to the Father when he prays. When I pray he hears me immediately. Jesus said God is the only true God John 17:3, and that cannot be changed. He said he would magnify himself to us, and he has done just that. I am one of the happiest in the whole world.

As are current day Jews, the Cypriots, Kurds and Palestinians - middle eastern populations which are closely related.

The devil uses these false idols to deceive people by making supernatural things to happen as if it's these useless things doing it. Interesting that he didn't have any power when the prophet Elijah confronted the false worshipers of Baal on mount Carmel. He was unable to make fire come down to consume the sacrifice. God is in control. He caused fire to come down in the book of Job why not now? He can only do what the true king allows.

The text says Jacob " hid" the idols, hmmm... not a clean break perhaps but keeping them in reserve as a "back up." It is impossible for us to imagine what it was like being the only monotheistics in
the world. It is hard to discern leaven when you have been bowing to it for generations. Is this perhaps why Jeroboam chose Bethel as the place to set up the golden calfs?
This is why although Jesus received the Holy Spirit as a dove we receive as a fire, only fire can kill leaven.
The path of the righteous grows brighter and brighter until the full day.... walk by the Spirit beloveds.

I don't think she took them because they were valuable materials, i think they were made from wood or stone and not gold or silver in those times. She took them maybe because of superstition, she grew up with these false gods and somewhat still have influence by the culture. She also didn't tell Jacob about them because she knew stealing was wrong and by this time Jacob was a changed man unlike his uncle. She knew Jacob would have objected for her to steal them regardless of her motives.

Rachel was attached to her father's idols and she was not as godly as her sister Leah. Rachel showed her lack of character by being jealous of Leah when she began bearing children while she, Rachel, was barren. That's why God blessed Leah and she bore 6 of Jacob's 12 sons, and her servant bore 2 more. Leah had far more influence in the famiIy through two thirds of the sons, than Rachel, even though Jacob loved Rachel more.

    • @jdschauss
      @jdschauss 5 месяцев назад +1

Also, Jesus is the descendant of Leah through Judah rather than of Rachel through Joseph or Benjamin. Leah was the dutiful wife, yet Rachel was the one who was not content. Rachel practiced witchcraft with the mandrake roots, and she died giving birth to Benjamin. Even though she didn't honor God in her life by her actions, God honored her by giving her a son like Joseph, and a later even greater descendant Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles. God is good, even though we never are. I praise Him for giving us beauty for ashes.
