People get confused with another known ragam Saraswathi Manohari. The scales of the two ragams are given below and one do not find much of a closeness. Perhaps our experts may explain this. ( in some sites, it is mentioned as Malav ). From the name, I guess that it might have originated from the Indore region, which is known as Malwa region. Though ragam Malavi in Carnatic style is in the Harikhamboji melam, as per Rajan Parrikar, the Hindustani raga is a part of Poorvi Thaat and not Khamaj Thaat ( which is close to Harikhamboji ). Mr Parrikar also mentions that there is no consensus in the swaroopa of this rag. With so much of confusion
When they begin the Chittaswaram for the krithi, due to a confusion each one sings a part of the Swarams and Sri T N Krishnan is confused as to whom to follow. Semmangudi soon realizes this and to stop the chaos exclaims "Iruda ! Iruda ! (Stop ! Stop !)" and then begins the chittaswaram from the beginning.
You have a really keen pair of ears. I only could figure that out after you told me :D Hilarious. Semmangudi mama's wit is another art form of its own class :D
