Thank you for actually showing and discussing the classical records, many people never do and it's a shame for someone looking to learn.
I hit a similar collection... I went to the estate sale on the second day on a tip, all the jazz and rock was bought first day, but no one touched the classical, picked up a couple hundred classical albums for a $1 a piece!!! , several of them were in the $500+ range, and there were lots of music matters, analogue productions, wilson audio, etc... its good to know the classical! I sold most of it but cleared around 6K for a $200 investment.

I know nothing about auctions, classical, and very little about jazz. Speaking Greek to me, however its very interesting and I learn a lot from most of Mike's videos.
I'm a metal, hard rock guy trying to learn about (and listen to) other genres like jazz, classical! We have to start somewhere! Mike's a great start!
@@analoguecity3454 if you're a metal guy then Miles' stuff like In A Silent Way and Kind Of Blue may be a bit too much of slamming on the brakes for ya. You may find the Jazz Fusion style more to your liking (Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra and each band's members' solo stuff...Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham etc). Now I could be wrong...you might, right away, enjoy the Blue Note-style "trad jazz" stuff. But if it comes off initially as too "strait-laced" then Fusion is a good go-between :)

Yes, we all try to keep our stuff in excellent condition! CDs are easy to keep mint, records are a bit tougher (but worth it)!

Hi, you mentioned that in this acquisition you got some real to reel tapes. I don’t have a tape player yet though I hope to acquire a working Tiak or Sony this year.
I’ve collected bossa nova on vinyl for many decades and I’ve also acquired a handful of Bossanova on reel to reel tapes. So I can’t yet play them I certainly treasure them as some of the gems in my collection, partly for the rare genre, partly for the actual music contained in them, partly for the beautiful album cover design, and especially for the kind of audio quality that you get with analog tape

OH MY GOD... What a great Collection.. honestly.. i think you get a good price if you calculate those records, they are worth much much more if you sell/buy them one by one... I will watch this video over and over again :-) And of course / bow and two thumbs up for the man who goes threw the effort and puts this collection together!!!

It's common knowledge that if you sell a bunch of stuff together in a bundle you will make less money than selling each piece individually, and on the flip side (pun intended) if you buy in bulk you will get a better deal than buying the same stuff in discrete sales. I'm pretty sure this guy (and everyone else) knows this without you telling him.

@David Mander In a poly we call ourselves 'partners'. I've 3 partners, women of great taste, just not taste for vinyl. So I keep all my analogic music in a separate house, a few miles away from our compound.
You got a great deal. You can sell enough to get your money back and still have a huge collection of mint and near mint classical albums. I don't know a whole lot about classical music but it looks like a lot of keepers there.
How do you handle returns at your store if and when an album we purchase in your store, from this collection, is flawed? I ask because it is impossible for you to demo each album, and no one would expect you to do so. Many Thanks!
In my country is yust one decent record shop. If I want any of the mofi or some analog production I have to wait 2 month to get it. And you bouth a collection for 25k. Most of those lp's is a sci-fi for me.
I wouldn’t brag about being the guy who makes the whole group over pay, that’s just obnoxious and annoying and I’d be pissed if I was one of the other buyers.
Interesting to see these huge collections. Wonder if people ever get the time to play this music. I guess its all about the satisfaction that comes from possessing good stuff

One of your very best videos, Mike; I watched it through twice. About two-thirds of my music collection of 6,100 CDs is classical and I have many boxed sets of RCA's Living Stereo, Mercury Living Presence, Decca, Philips and others, so it was nice to hear what you had to say about many of them.

I am just in awe.....would love to hear some of them once. The EMI pile wildly I have most of that.....sometimes I am just happy knowing they still exist and this treasure of music survives.....
Very interesting! I used to run a classical music store in Bristol, England until I retired to a small cottage packed with both CDs and LPs. I specialised in British music, so stocked those great labels known for recording this repertoire: Chandos (I only saw one in your video), Hyperion (didn't see any!), and, my favourite label, Lyrita (you had a few). I knew Richard Itter (owner of Lyrita) well enough to phone him before I put out my newsletter so as to include details of forthcoming Lyrita releases - did you know that Lyrita recordings were often made by Decca Engineers?And their early records were pressed at the Decca pressing plant at New Malden, London. I bought from the rep. of Lyrita's distribution company all of the remaining stock of LPs after they had started to produce CDs...several hundred records. These were mainly pressings made at Nimbus Nr Monmouth in Wales....I think these are superior to New Malden pressings (by this time Nimbus had re-mastered most of the Lyrita catalogue). I now have 90% of the Lyrita LP catalogue in mint pressings from Nimbus (worth checking the Arnold Dances 'pinky' that you had four copies of, and trying out the various pressings (the Nimbus have a neat little stamper mark on the centre....the Arnold is a tremendous recording. Also look out for one of the first stereo LPs, Holst SRCS 34, again great recording, and used by Peter Walker to demonstrate the first Electrostatic loudspeakers Quad made (Quad57s) - I now use the latest Quads, the 2812s to play my Lyrita's.....and much more. The bulk of the Lyrita's I bought - after augmenting my own collection - I shipped to a dealer in New York....so it's just possible one of the four you have came through my shop! Thanks again for an interesting video.
Ps My cottage is only 2 miles from Nimbus's headquarters at Wyastone Leys, Monmouth.
I'm in Montréal and we rarely see Hyperion and Chandos on vinyl here, much more common on cd. The few Chandos vinyl I saw in the last few years were mostly Louis Lortie recordings, I guess they were more often imported since he's from here.
@@LePhil79 I like very much Louis Lortie's work for Chandos and rate his Ravel very highly - I saw him in Bristol quite a few years ago. Shame you don't see LPs of Chandos stuff over there...there's some really remarkable recordings of Bax and E J Moeran, etc. in great sound and usually good pressing quality (many DMM).
I'm a big fan of Decca recordings made in Montreal....Ravel, Respighi, Stravinsky, Holst, etc. and have many excellent LP pressings (ours are usually pressed in Holland and are exceptionally fine).
Dutoit now out of favour though generally!
@@rogerwebb7501 Even the "big boys", EMI and Decca, are rare to find in vinyl. In North America they published lower quality pressings under the brands - respectively - of Angel and London. Other European brands were usually exporting instead, so we had the same quality than the original. Phillips, DGG and Archiv, French EMI (la voix de son maître), Erato and Harmonia Mundi are all way easier to find than the British brands.
I too like Lortie's Ravel recordings (I have them on CDs ). I saw him in concert last october with Hélène Mercier. She lives in Paris and he lives in Berlin, but they still play together 50 years after they met at school in Montréal when they were young teenagers !!
@@LePhil79 Someone could write a book about the differences between LP pressings in different 'territories' (as the industry calls them). I have a lot of experience of European pressings and those EMI French ones are at the bottom of the pile - but I used to buy them as I'm interested in the repertoire only available in those pressings. BTW if you get the chance have a look at a François Truffaut film called Antoine et Colette, as part is shot in the Philips pressing plant in Paris...the handling is terrible, fingers all over the finished product as they're shoved into the polythene 'chicken bags'!
DG I found generally ok, except some were made in the UK - not so good. The best DGs I bought while working in Berlin in the late 1960s.

If someone write a book about the labels history in classical music, I'll buy it for sure. I was born in the 80s and it's tough to connecting the dots from the little, sparse informations I found on the internet.
Just for DG, I have some old Andrés Segovia DG recordings labelled as "Decca" and made in Ontario, some normal-looking DG pressed here in Québec at the RCA-Victor factory, and - most of them - pressed in the 70s and 80s, imported from Germany.
For the french EMI, those made in the 60s were labelled as "Columbia / Pathé-Marconi", if I'm not mistaken, and can't be found here as we had another Columbia brand (CBS) in N.A. Those we can found were made in the 70s, with a gatefold and a red frame labelled "La voix de son maître", without any mention of the "Columbia" brand. They made new recordings, but also a lot of reissues, particularly in the french repertoire or by some french musicians.
I think the "import from Europe" thing really started in the 70s. If I want to find a Samson François recording, I will only found it as an "Angel/Seraphim" record, or as an imported 70s french EMI reissue.
Of course, I imagine it must be easy to find "real" Decca and EMI in the UK, but here you won't find them in an average records store. Fortunately for me (and my wallet), I don't consider myself neither as an audiophile or a collector, I just enjoy listening and comparing different interpretations.
Just as long as Chad Kassem didn't show up, you're good. The price of the classical was probably pretty reasonable, but the jazz must have been very competitive. Of course, the value of classical has plummeted in the past 20 years, and most of the classical dealers have gone out of business. Living Stereos and Mercs are worth about 1/10 of what they were, and there is little interest any more in Bluebacks. Even jazz is way down compared to 20 years ago - a Blue Note that was $6K in 2000 is now $2K.
Even so, you got fabulous values.
I know a guy who has a similar collection, and he does have 5 or 6 NM Kogans on EMI SAX.
If you want to understand the sonic differences between Decca and London, take each record in your hands and flex it. Whap, whap, whap! What do you feel when you hold them and caress them? Different vinyl formulation. I keep matched pairs of Deccas and Londons with the same lacquers to convince any doubters. This doesn't mean the Bluebacks aren't nice, but they aren't up to the Deccas, either.
Was there a copy of the Szerying recital in the Living Stereos? It's a big $$$ record, but not actually that good musically.
You definitely don't want UK pressings of Mercuries, they're not very good at all. I don't think they got decent master tapes.
Watch out for the Ravel Merc - many of them are pressed off-center, including my copy.
The reissues of LSC-2449 are interesting - the Classic is OK, the first Acoustic Sounds mastering is much better, and the final Acoustic Sounds re-mastering is really great.
Are any of the English, Scottish, and Cornish dances a Decca pressing? That's what audiophiles are looking for. I've got a Nimbus pressing that's not too bad, but the one Harry Pearson heard and loved came from the Decca plant.
There were test pressing of Classic Records 45s that were never issued commercially - there's a lot of money in those.
One interesting thing about Speaker's Corner is that hired Tony Hawkins to remaster some of the records that he had mastered for Decca 25 years previously.

Here in europe nobody is going for classical records. Actually there are so much around the price for one is hardly over 50 cents, but jazz on the other hand is really hard to find.
He is mostly talking about labels, pressings, values, rarity, price tags....does he even collect for the music or listen to all that stuff?!
Insane haul man. I think you did real good. 25 grand is a lot of money but that’s a treasure trove that would cost a lot note to recreate. Amazing stuff.

Fascinating backstory and what an amazing acquisition you made! If I get to Phoenix again soon I will be sure to spend some money at your store, I’m a long time vinyl collector like four decades of collecting, mostly jazz and Latin.
Not sure if you’ve commented on it before or maybe some of the comments you’re on RUclips but I will just say that so pardon me if I’m repeating what others have already said. What I notice when I buy jazz & classical Records is that they are all in very good to mint condition. I think that speaks pretty highly of those music aficionados, those genres tend to attract people who do not trash their records. Especially if you’ve paid serious money for a fine German recording of classical music or a French recording of 1960s jazz, you’re not likely to trash the record. For that matter I also noticed that jazz and classical CDs tend to be an excellent condition when I buy them. Something about the integrity or the behavior of the people that own them and listen to them. On the other hand I noticed a lot of country records blues and heavy metal tend to be very trashed, as out the listeners took very little regard for their records. I probably have become more a collector of classical records now than ever before because they tend to be in such pristine shape and so many are on that really good German label or they are red seal type. Any comments?

Nice collection! I Know what you mean on missing out on something, but sometimes that's how auctions go...I recently bid on the auction for Threadgill's in Austin. A Janis Joplin gig poster I wanted went for $4,000, didn't win that one but I was fortunate however to get a 1969 Handbill from Mississippi Fred McDowell for $100 and buyers premium was only $24.00...oh yeah, maybe your next live show will be after record store day?

Hi, sorry if I’m cluttering your comment area of RUclips. I’ve tried clicking on your contact to make contact with you through RUclips or your record store and it doesn’t seem to go anywhere specific to drop you an email. Though this auction lot was jazz and classical, I’m wondering if there was any interesting easy listening, exotica or bossa nova in the mix. I’ve collected exotica for a long time, I will never forget the Magic moment at age 11 that I discovered the fascinating music of Martin Denny. Although it takes a lot of time while crate digging I always take the time necessary to look through boxes of records at yard sales. So at first glance they might look like just easy listening music, I always end up finding rare miles Davis and rare Latin jazz records and some very strange exotica records. I think the people who owned them didn’t know that they were buying a “jazz“ record, they were just buying instrumental music that they like to have playing on their hi-go console.
I was at an estate sale in Albuquerque a few months ago and as I arrived I saw a few record collectors in their car leaving the sale. I waved them down and said “anything good?“ One of them looked disappointing and said “no mostly a bunch of easy listening junk, not worth looking through!“ Well… I took the time spent about an hour and a half looking through all of the bins of records and found some incredible jams including two Frank Sinatra test pressings and a few autographed verve jazz recordings. This just goes to show… One person is drunk as another person‘s treasure… Especially for those treasure hunters who are willing to take the time to look through boxes. Another trick I’ve learned over the years is if you find a vinyl record but no album cover, or vice a versa you find the empty album cover but no record, it’s always good to set it aside because you’re likely to find it Among the rest of the records. That one estate sale I found the cover of a Dave Brubeck album with no disc inside. A while later I noticed a phonograph on a table, opened it up, and there it was… The Dave Brubeck record still on the turntable, perhaps the very last music this person listen to in their life. That’s a backstory and some provenance to me that was worth paying for. They were selling records for $.50 each I went ahead and gave them five dollars for that one. Too bad none of the tape boxes were properly protected. The covers rub off very easily if you don't but then in plastic bags like the LP's are.
Sad the chap had no one to leave them to. I have my eye on a 85 year old with no kids with a collection that is worth well over 100k, maybe 200k. Reality is if I don't take them, Goodwill is the likely result, or the dumpster. People think 23k is a lot but you need to get 40k back to break even, when you factor in time to sort, list, sell, etc. Good to see a classical lot of this quality, I can see some Chinese folks getting their wallets out.

did you get a copy of the living stereo that was recalled due to dramatic music if you will, the needle would jump out of the groove and scratch the record during playback. so the copies that did get out there are beat.

Fantastic collection. It’s taken me nearly 40 years to get even half that amount even with the internet. The Ruggiero Ricci Decca at 50:28 I have the original ED1 in mint condition and is probably the most valuable Decca Stereo Classical Record in my collection commanding thousands of pounds. It sounds stunning and in my view has still not been surpassed in terms of sound quality. It is so rare though, so is yours the real deal or an audiophile copy? If it is the ED1 compare it against the audiophile copy and weep! 52:23 Brahms Double concerto is a pretty ‘heavy hitter’ to me!
Unfortunately it's the speakers corner reissue. The Brahms Double Concerto is ED1. But the London Blueback is in there. I'll give it a listen. I've only ever listened the Speakers Corner Pressing.

Good video. I have a lot of classical music vinyls, the decca and london US sound the same. Some Philips (Holland) from the early 70's are amazing, Deutsche grammophon still have some amazing recordings (not many, but some are impressive and of good quality). The funny thing for me is that many of the audiophile reissues like Speakers corner or analogue productions don't sound natural, but of course they are still good editions.
I have a fairly substantial collection of Jazz and a pretty decent collection of Classical. At that auction I would feel comfortable in the Jazz realm as far as bidding. In the Classical realm not so much. Classical is so deep, so many artists, recording and composers it is really an intimidating subject. You really have to know what you are doing to connect the dots.
Yeah, you have to know about the composer, then if the performer is of any interest or outstanding in that composer/piece and then if the recording is good, a lot of info. All this for a hundred composers and maybe several hundreds performers

I'm surprised you singled out the Reiner New World Symphony as "fantastic", I've always heard that album mentioned as the "famous disappointment" in the Living Stereo catalog. I have a copy and to me it sounds like a muddled mess (despite the solid performance). But this looks like a brilliant collection and I can't wait to dig through some of it when you put it in the shop. I've been looking for a copy of "Ansermet Conducts Debussy" for a while now, hope its still there when I make it in ;)
I haven't listened to the record. I have the CD that came in the Living Stereo box and it's one of my favorite CD's (musically) in the box. I had high hopes for the LP but you have now crushed my dreams.

Some Living Stereo are disappointmant , some Decca too : also sprach zarathustra ( Karajan 1959 Stereo)
SHF has info that some of those Living Stereo vary from plant to plant. Like the same exact title could sound bad on one copy and then amazing on another

I've got around 3000 vinyls, mostly classical. Got around 3000 CDs which I prefer, to each his own. I've got the complete Heifetz collection on both vinyl and CD. I've got a copy of Porgy and Bess signed by Leontyne Price. My favorite label was RCA. I also liked Columbia. Not big on EMI. My favorite on CD is DG and Philips. Polygram and Sony own the two most important libraries I think. If I liked something on vinyl I bought the CD too.
