Chris was such a sweet, beautiful, funny guy. We worked together for years at The Record Exchange in Raleigh. He was smart, knowledgeable, curious, and as you see from his collection, super-crazy passionate about every kind of music. If only more people could be so readily open to so many different things. I'm incredibly grateful to you for posting this video. Watching you flip through his collection was like seeing old home movies. Memories of Chris and our time together came flooding back. Thank you.
If Dillon does know, he certainly made the right decision to keep the focus on all the incredible music. After 30 years, Chris' family and Dylan will get these records out of the basement and back into circulation, to be shared, played and enjoyed. And as if on cue, my computer is now playing "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun". Damn, Chris LOVED Paul's Boutique. Peace @@wealthvisionnews9980
This is AWESOME.. thank you so much. I'm crying like a baby right now though... Chris was my boyfriend when we were like 15-16 ... I played in a band called NrG and his band Massive Arm Linkage did a couple shows with us. Later on we both ended up living in Raleigh NC and remained friends. His death was a great loss to humanity he was the sweetest most sincere person. Thanks so much for giving this the attention it deserves.
Chris was a beautiful soul. I worked with him at The Record Exchange. We listened to a lot of these records together while we worked-he was very passionate about music. I’m sure I wrote up a lot of the tickets on his employee purchases! I miss him-glad this video keeps his memory alive.❤
Im a passionate record collector, a son, a brother, and a father. I was instantly moved to tears with Chris and his families story. Thank you so much for sharing. Bluebugrecords
Ths is amazing. I can't comprehend how a 23 year old in 1992 had all these records, and knew about all these genres - even working in a record shop, to have this kind of knowledge in a pre-internet era is crazy. Kudos to Chris, looking forward to hearing Massive Arm Linkage.
I think the key is that he worked in a record store and maybe had older colleagues that recommended stuff. This collection seems to be about 2/3 American 1/3 British and nothing really from any other country. Also, has obscure stuff from well-known artists rather than really obscure bands.
He did. I was the guy that hired him. The whole staff was knowledgeable with varied tastes which benefited us all. After watching the video I had to laugh because quite a few of those records were promos! He was a great guy with a great smile! I miss him!
The thing is back then the thrill was in finding and hearing these things. There was a whole "underground scene" involved and it involved many adventures, bootlegs, mix tapes, limited pressings, 'zines, dead ends, and word of mouth. I can remember watching a good friend pay the princely sum of $100+ ($150?) for an original vinyl Misfits "Walk Among Us" LP (pink cover and all) back in 1987 or '88. We had to drive maybe 3 hours just to get to the record store that was selling it. Chris was clearly an exceptional guy with an amazing collection for sure.
Chris would be so happy to see his records bringing people joy. Chris was one of my best friends in high school and he was such a special person. Thank you for helping to keep his memory alive. I would love to have one of the Massive Arm Linkage recordings! They took that name from our student code of conduct that said there could no student demonstrations, including massive arm linkages in the hall!!
I lost my son when he was 20. This is so cool. I can tell you that revisiting old CDs that he enjoyed from his collection was therapy for me. It's been 9 years since he passed...The story of Chris just sparked how important our musical journey shapes our memories. Music truly does decorate time.
I knew Chris when I lived in Raleigh. Used to hang out at his place on Dixie Ave in the late 80's and listen to Bongwater, Butthole Surfers, Sun Ra, etc...Last time I saw Chris I was working with a landscaping company that took care of the area that the Mission Valley Record Exchange was located. We would always hang for about 5 minutes before he opened the store. I really do miss Chris. BTW, I just about fell over when this video popped up randomly this morning in my youtube "Recommended". First thing I thought before I clicked play was "weird, I was friends with a guy named Chris Whitson growing up."
This was my favorite video you have ever done Dillon. I actually started tearing up as you were telling the story in the beginning. When you are a father, this kind of stuff hits hard. I can’t imagine losing a child. I’m so glad you were able to purchase this collection and spread his legacy. Wish I knew you were up in Maine. I would’ve loved to meet up and say Hello in person. The sticker idea is brilliant ! You're not just selling this amazing record collection but you're honoring the man at the same time. That's really really cool ! Enjoying your videos a lot. You're a great story teller man 👍👍👍
Incredible collection!! What an honor to not only purchase his extensive emaculate collection, but to have the ability to cherish some yourself. Chris seemed like an exceptional guy with excellent taste!!
I absolutely LOVE your idea to put a sticker on each record outer sleeve citing Chris’s name and linking to the story. As a collector, I can tell you the stories are half the fun when finding/buying vintage records.
This story gave me all the feels. Great way to honor this young man, his family and this fabulous collection. Some amazing vinyl featured in this sneak peek.
I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet that Chris was a skateboarder, a lot of skateboarders back then not only had real diverse tastes, but they helped keep vinyl alive.
Yep, lived it for sure, had friends with massive collections 1986/7 - 1994 (by then in college and had finally caved in to CDs myself). Witnessed a friend pay $100+ for an original Misfits "Walk Among Us" LP, pink cover and all, back in what was probably 1987...he was also the best skater I knew and became a very good bass player soon thereafter.
Your best video Dillon! I was graduating high school in ‘93 and I feel like I know Chris just through his collection. I started my collection back then buying from the Record Exchange in Roanoke VA. What a beautiful story and let Chris live through his love of music. I’m in Raleigh and will plan on driving over on the 14th! Will also sit in on the Whatnot auction. Much love to Chris’ family ❤
Wow! What an amazing collection. Chris had a beautiful smile and would be one year older than I am. He had an unbelievable collection but this is truly about more than the music and I love that you are honoring him by placing a sticker on everything in his collection. ♥️ Thank you for sharing this about Chris and his family.
Amazing story Buddy. Absolutely amazing story. It hit me in the chest. It's coming up on the anniversary of when I lost my dad next month back in 2012. My dad was the one who tought me about music . His tastes were all over the place. He was a Vietnam veteran who had a very hard life and as a family we had tough moments bit I think back to the time we spent together sharing music still brings a tear. It was an absolute pleasure viewing this.
What a great story! I was in your shop last Monday with my girlfriend, we spent a couple hours there.... She bought more records than me. One she bought was a Christmas present for me. We got home and she couldn't wait and gave me the record. It is an awesome copy of a Dirty Dozens Brass Band record apparently from his collection because it has his sticker on it!
What a beautiful story, and I've got to commend you Dylan for sticking by the family and making this about their love and care towards this young man's budding record collection. What an incredible taste in music and knowledge of so many genres and styles at such a young age! Makes his passing even more sadder. I always love the connections between music and 'owners'. I'm based in the UK and years ago I won an auction online for a bunch of records being sold in Birmingham. Turns out the son was selling them on behalf of his dad who used to do some pioneering world music/ethnic music/jazz/breakbeat nights back in the mid 80s. His dad had passed on suddenly, and he was glad someone with similar taste was interested in them. Feel honoured to have that collection, and feel a sense of duty to take good care of it!
That’s really cool. Yeah as record collectors, I think we all wonder where the records came from. In this case it’s special to know. Thanks for watching! 🙏
I watched the first minutes of your video and told my wife you need to watch this too. We we’re impressed and moved with the story. Thank you for sharing Chris’ story and passing on part of his legacy.
Such an emotional video. Insane collection and taste for someone who was only 23 years old. Glad out of anyone it was you who got his collection as you’ll honour Chris is such a terrific way 😊
Watching this reminded me of my own musical journey when I was young. He was obviously wise beyond his years to be collecting stuff like this. Most 23-year-olds would have moved on from records to CDs in 1992. I have a feeling he knew these records would be valuable someday. Thank you for sharing this heartwarming story and putting his name and memory out there for the world to see. He must have been such a cool guy.
This man had the best taste in music someone in his early 20s can have. Lord have mercy. Not only are these killer records but they're super pristine end well taken care of. Shows the love he had for this music and the love his family had for him. Really beautiful and wholesome story !
The fact you are marking each piece as being from his collection is BRILLIANT! I have long dreamed that, when I pass, someone will do the same with mine. These collections are truly autobiographical, like they say in High Fidelity.
Im an 68 year old collector and my range is nothing like his and at such a young age, I live in Kansas City and when I was 14 - 15 years old we would get our parents to drop us off at Cowtown Ballroom and other venues and see live shows, not a lot to do here back then but the music venues and records shops were great. Your story takes me back, Thanks
I was so moved by this story. Thank you for sharing it with us! I think the fact that you were the one who purchased Chris' collection and were there with his family when they found the lost recording of his band was a sign that Chris is happy with his family's decision and you were the right person to share his collection with the world. While I'm amazed by Chris' eclectic taste in music, especially because he didn't have access to the internet and was 23!, I'm even more blown away by the legacy of WHO Chris was as a human being. Without meeting Chris, it's been a gift to read about him in the comments. Thank you Chris for being such a wonderful human and spreading your light and love into this world. I love how this story of Chris' life and his love of music is able to connect us all. Music is such a great bridge--uniting us rather than dividing us.
It’s as truly wonderful to see your excitement showing us these records and telling us the story, as was your excitement in discovering Chris’s family and his collection in the first place. Beautiful gesture man, truly beautiful.
Great, great way to honor the young man that put together such a beautiful treasure trove of music. I can only hope that I’ve impacted someone enough when I’m gone that will do the same for me.
Wow , unbelievable taste in music Chris had. It’s like a time warp, thanks for taking us thru this journey and blessing to his family for getting this collection in the right hands to do it justice in Chris’s memory !
1992 was one of my favourite years in life. So many memories and so many albums I bought that time when music really touched my soul more than before or after.
This is one of the best videos you have done. The story, the respect the love is off the scale. No doubt Chris is looking down smiling. You’re a good good man Dillon. Sending love from Liverpool UK. ❤❤
This story is being spread round the world!! I’m writing form Stoke on Trent, England. It’s wonderful. It’s that joy that music and vinyl in particular brings you. I’m curious to watch out for 14th October auction. This video will never never be beaten!!
I worked at a record store in Seattle in the early 90's--among other times. I remember so well that shaking hands barely containable excitement feeling when the right collection magically appeared. I miss those days. I'm glad you're still feeling it, warms my heart. That blows my mind. So many records that I either have or def HAD! (fucking crack!) and records that I know so so well. That collection could have come from a lot folks that I knew and loved back in the day. 😢😵💫
This was very moving and made me feel better about the world a little bit. Love the channel and appreciate your earnest joy and enthusiasm. Tx for the great energy
This was a super cool video. Thanks for making it! Chris sounded like the kinda kid I woulda been friends with. Glad you could help his family keep his memory alive.
A wonderful story. My collection covers all genres too, from Classical to Jazz to Heavy Rock, Country, Soul, Prog, Motown and everything in between. I hope that when I’m gone my son (now 19)will listen to these records and think of me. You can understand a lot about a person by looking through their record collection (doesn’t really work with MP3’s does it??) … thanks for a great video. I defo have a tear in my eye… you just want to give this young lad a big hug and thumbs up 😢
What a great video, a great story, and a great collection. I absolutely LOVE that you are putting those stickers on the albums. That is awesome! Love the story of your interaction with the family. Very emotional. This hits hard, about how much a record collection could create such an emotional bond. Wonderful.
What a great idea with the stickers to pay tribute to this young man’s collection. It is something that he collected all these at such a young age. Dylan your videos continue to improve and I look forward to seeing them
Wow this made me tear up a bit, what an incredible story & collection!! and now looking through the comments at how many people knew this young man is crazy… god bless him and his family. May these records make it into the hands of people like him who can love and appreciate them as he did… great video! 🙌
I had a bunch of records at 23 which would be 1995, but it took me til 2010 to get to 2500. Nice salute to this dude. Man, he must have bought some collections in his time to gather all that in such a short time.
Really enjoying your collection find videos. This story & collection IS so special. Part of the fun of treasure hunting is the good stories that come with it. Sad Chris passed so young but what a way to honor
What a great collection and story. Really great idea to.add the sticker with the link to the story. Just shows that this collection landed in the right hands. Hope the sale goes well.
Amazing variety of taste, especially for a younger person. I loved seeing that collection bounce from Kiss to Foetus to ASF to Zeppline and back in a matter of seconds flipping through the records. RIP, strange to know someone who moved on when I was a toddler would've had so much in common with me currently.
Wow, what an amazing story! Y’all finding the sons mixtape, that just made my day. What an amazing collection. I may need to look up flights to Charlotte for Oct 14
out of all of it the blues records are what got me most . amazing stuff damn little walter , howling wolf , sonny boy , lightening hopkins. sick stuff awesome
Thank you so much for sharing this story. Chris had an amazing collection, at any age....just wow. It breaks my heart even more to know he didn't hear Nirvana Unplugged or In Utero, obviously he would have had those first pressings in his collection. And he had Leadbelly records... Wish he could've heard Kurt's legendary vocals on that, sigh.
What a great fukin video and homage to a brilliant listener! Its great to see all the comments from oeople that knew him that stumbled upon this video! RIP CHRIS!!! 🙏🙏🙏
What an absolute dream collection. I have quite a bit of it, but the stuff I don't have I have never seen in the wild. It's such a beautiful collection!
That is a remarkable collection for a 23 year old and a wonderful story. Where did he get them all from and why did he have multiple copies of some albums? Mr. Whitson was certainly a very special person.
Your a hun or dude, I appreciate your approach. Great to hear stories about people’s collections. I hope my family will get to know me after passing through my collections.

What a heavy story! Thanks for sharing, Makes me honored to own a few of these.
Thanks dude! Good to see you today!
This was very moving and made me feel better about the world a little bit. Love the channel and appreciate your earnest joy and enthusiasm. Tx for the great energy
Thanks for the kind words!
Amazing story and video. Rarely does a vinyl collection pickup video induce a tear or two. This one did. Well done sir. A beautiful story well told.
Thanks! That means a lot!
This was a super cool video. Thanks for making it! Chris sounded like the kinda kid I woulda been friends with. Glad you could help his family keep his memory alive.
Thx for that story. Amazing. RIP Chris
I defo have a tear in my eye… you just want to give this young lad a big hug and thumbs up 😢
Totally agree. Thanks so much!
@@noblerecords ps love your videos, although I’m here in the UK … would love to visit your store one day (bucket list job)
What a great video, a great story, and a great collection. I absolutely LOVE that you are putting those stickers on the albums. That is awesome! Love the story of your interaction with the family. Very emotional. This hits hard, about how much a record collection could create such an emotional bond. Wonderful.
It’s a very special story. Thanks for watching! 🙏
Great story and collection. What a house!!
What a great idea with the stickers to pay tribute to this young man’s collection. It is something that he collected all these at such a young age. Dylan your videos continue to improve and I look forward to seeing them
Thanks so much!
Wow this made me tear up a bit, what an incredible story & collection!! and now looking through the comments at how many people knew this young man is crazy… god bless him and his family. May these records make it into the hands of people like him who can love and appreciate them as he did… great video! 🙌
Great, great, great story. Prayers to the family. Noble records did this right! Dylan and Logan!
Thanks! We try!
I had a bunch of records at 23 which would be 1995, but it took me til 2010 to get to 2500. Nice salute to this dude. Man, he must have bought some collections in his time to gather all that in such a short time.
Wow, emotional video! That kid was cool! What a brilliant collection!
Thanks man!
Thanks Chris for being that cool ass 23yrd old who knew what was up. As a fellow 23yrd old. Thank you for your preservation of sound. 🕊
Really enjoying your collection find videos. This story & collection IS so special. Part of the fun of treasure hunting is the good stories that come with it. Sad Chris passed so young but what a way to honor
Brilliant stuff. Wonderful. This is what music is about.
Just watched the video and must say I found it quite beautiful. Every record collection has a story behind it. And it's so nice to hear Chris' story 👍
beautiful story man - the records are the McGuffin, it's the stories and the memories that make it great!
What a great collection and story. Really great idea to.add the sticker with the link to the story. Just shows that this collection landed in the right hands. Hope the sale goes well.
Awesome story! thank you
Amazing variety of taste, especially for a younger person. I loved seeing that collection bounce from Kiss to Foetus to ASF to Zeppline and back in a matter of seconds flipping through the records. RIP, strange to know someone who moved on when I was a toddler would've had so much in common with me currently.
What a beauitful story, rest in peace Chris... you had an amazing music collection and great taste!
Wow, what an amazing story! Y’all finding the sons mixtape, that just made my day. What an amazing collection. I may need to look up flights to Charlotte for Oct 14
Come on! We will be trying to offer some online as well. Thanks for watching! 🙏

out of all of it the blues records are what got me most . amazing stuff damn little walter , howling wolf , sonny boy , lightening hopkins. sick stuff awesome
How amazing. Imagine being 23 and already having the ultimate collection. RIP Chris, and thanks for letting us take a peep into your life. 🙏
Oh my giddy giddy gosh, this guy knew what great music is
Beautiful, just beautiful.
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Amazing collection and story! Thanks Dillon
Thanks man!

What an absolute dream collection. I have quite a bit of it, but the stuff I don't have I have never seen in the wild. It's such a beautiful collection!
What a beautiful story.
Thanks so much!
This is fantastic !
Thanks man!
That is a remarkable collection for a 23 year old and a wonderful story. Where did he get them all from and why did he have multiple copies of some albums? Mr. Whitson was certainly a very special person.
He had multiples usually when they were different pressings or alternate covers
What a moving back story to this collection. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Awesome story with a great collection. So glad there getting back out in the hands of music lovers.
