Oil giant ExxonMobil predicted climate change in 1970s, scientists claim - BBC News

  • Researchers have claimed one of the world’s largest oil companies accurately forecast how burning fossil fuels would warm the planet decades ago.
    Scientists claim ExxonMobil - which has made billions from selling fossil fuels - publicly denied the link.
    The oil giant denied the allegations, telling the BBC: “Those who talk about how 'Exxon Knew' are wrong in their conclusions.”
    The study, by Harvard University and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change, analysed data in ExxonMobil’s internal documents and found predictions made in the 1970s were often more accurate than Nasa scientists.

      Well, because we are part of the problem. Every report on climate crisis makes carbon and temperature comparison with the preindustrialised age (before 1850). But how many of us would choose to live in that age of sustenance farming, self contended villages, no modern technology or facilities and most importantly, no modern medicine. It's easy to make industry a fall guy, but we are buying those products and services. If we stop buying they will stop their carbon emitting industry. That's why we all run round in circles when talking about solutions to climate crisis.

    "Exxon's scientists were very good at predicting climate change," but the leaders didn't want to believe it, and especially didn't want their customers or the general public to believe it. So they established a huge marketing program to counteract their own scientists, and justify the company's continued mining and production of oil and gas.

What they didn't know was that their excellent predictions of what was likely to happen were correct because it hadn't happened. Also most papers said warming factors would outweigh cooling from particulates, even back in the 70s, the chilling myth was part of their campaign.

      The expectation was with global warming increasing at tenth of a degree celsius per decade that once it reached 1.3°C trending upward to happen about 1998 a tipping point would be reached in higher tempoearrtues of Gulf of Mexico waters causing stronger hurricanes. The preparation for that was taller ocean oil rigs. Then global warming stalled at 1.1°C in the early 1990s till the present.

The problem is that people are always sceptical of people in government wanting to change the way they do things that they don’t fully understand until it’s happening in the present. Or maybe they don’t need to think about it because they will be dead before facing the consequences of their actions. It’s sad that generations between 0-55 are the one that have to deal with the problems caused by those that have come before us. This doesn’t me just reducing carbon but political, global, societal and institutional reforms. @@phils6582 NOAA is even better source for meteorological models. DUE TO THE FACT NASA DO NOT MAKE METEOROLOGICAL MODELS!
      As you know there are two types of analysis - real and forecasting; NASA -provides satellite data, which is a RECORD of the observed event in real time! Unless you do not claim that NASA never heard of satellites, or they do not record data, or the data is not based observations over real events!

    So during the 70's when all the scientists were warning us about global cooling, Exxon scientists somehow knew more?
    The UN told us in 1972 that we only have 10 years to stave off climate disaster.

    • @scottekoontz
      @scottekoontz 3 месяца назад

      So doing the 1970s when the majority of scientists were warning about global warming (a true statement) those in grade school read one article that said particulates and a "cooling" sun would cause a terrible drop in temps. The rest of us were reading about how CO2 was overtaking particulate cooling.
      The scientists have been telling us since the 1970s that we have x years to avoid a tipping point. Now if we can get science aliterates to understand tipping points we could maybe talk to them.

Exxon wouldn't have access to better science than Nasa, they certainly wouldn't have known how bad oil would be, and if these thongs were true, where's the dead scientists, killed to keep things hush? Why wouldn't Exxon then have been leading the charge towards renewables? Obviously because it's a lie to cover their asses.
