Yes, at first blush it’s definitely a crowd pleaser. I just can’t say it enough how much I appreciate Aputure’s willingness to listen and adapt their offerings and industrial design to accommodate quite a wide spectrum of users. They are doing well for a lot more reasons than just price:)
Somehow the algorithm recommended this video to me, I’m starting over and getting into film so now that I know what a gaffer is and how quietly important, super important they are I was interested. I thought this was going to be a lighting tutorial (not another boring 3 point) and then it morphed into a really detailed review about a light I may one day be able to have in my set of tools (or even 20% of it). Thank you for the video, I was a 30sec subscriber.... I have to go now and watch some more of your videos.
Been waiting for these to be available and see how they go in the field. Aputure are now moving quite swiftly to provide a whole eco system and cover all budgets and sizes. Will be really interesting when the next few lights they have previewed are also available.
I was on a shoot a few months ago where we were on a community college campus where we needed to shoot in an area where we could not replace all the existing fixtures, but we had a large enough scene that we needed to combine the funky, existing fluorescents with our own units. I took a color reading of the flos with a c800 meter and then input those XY coordinates into my LED Kino Flos. It worked like a charm!
"I'm just now learning English. It's a great language..." I died laughing. Luke, I can totally relate. Your videos are always so informative. Loving the added humor. Nice work!
Great video as always, Luke! Hope things are a little busier now for you. Atlanta film scene still shut down, but doing some commercial work here. Stay safe!
Indeed. Yes, we are starting to work, but we’re still in the middle of a spike, so no one is rushing. Glad you are able to get going on some commercials!
Another great video Luke! Can you talk about the situations where a panel light is the better choice as opposed to more of a source-based light like the 120d or 300d? Perhaps you've covered this in another video. I'm still learning the basics about when and how to use each type of tool. Panels seem to be generally softer and more of a flood, correct?
That’s a good question, because you can make a point source light soft, but you can’t make a soft light hard. You can make a Skypanel a little “harder” by sliding in the intensifier, but that’s not the same as making it a point source. With a point source you have all this output, but unless you use it for a hot streak, you usually end up softening it and taking away a lot of it’s intensity. If you take the example of an interview, you tend to have a larger source for the key, so that’s a nice place for a panel because it starts off softer and broader and then you can continue to soften it or enlarge it with soft boxes or diffusion. Point source units are overall the most versatile. If you think of a K5600 Joker, it can be a hard source, take a fresnel lens, be popped into a soft box, Octa, lantern, or joleeko. Bang for the buck, that’s amazing. Aputure is pretty much carrying that concept into LEDs. It’s not easy to make lots of little emitters act like a filament or HMI arc, but the technology is getting there. The Orbiter is giving it a shot in full RGB. Fiilex is right behind, starting with the foundational Q5 fresnel and building from there... No one light fixture will check all the boxes, but if you have a few different kinds of units you can have some fun... especially if you add some tubes and practical bulbs:) Hope that doesn’t confuse you more!!!
You got the nova thats cool! I have mine coming in on Tuesday, and I ended up getting the 5 foot octa per your opinion! How are you liking the Nova in general in your opinion compared to the Arri's and such?
I’ve only had this unit a few days... but looking forward to spending more time with it. I think it’s a step above in terms of color and ease of use, but does not have the output of the S60, of course. But they were smart to slot their unit right in between the S30 and S60.
That’s a good question! So many manufacturers have taken their best shot at replacing the Skypanel, and yet it persists as a go to unit. The latest is perhaps the Vortex 8 from Creamsource. It’s interesting because it is a rather hard light out of the box, sort of like an S60 with the intensifier, but even more so. I had one for a few hours and compared it to the S60. I put it outside on the porch and had it shine through the wooden levelours of the front door. There was a definable pattern on the living room wall. That’s how hard it was. I didn’t see a similar pattern with the S60. You can always soften a hard light, as they say. Others, like the Gemini and Cineo HSX have tried, but even though their over all color science was better, they had less output. ARRI was too far ahead in terms of having the S60 as the panel standard. The Maxi-mix from Rosco-DMG Lumiere seems like an intriguing alternative, but Covid kind of slowed their momentum here in the US. I was looking forward to them touring after Cinegear 2019 and getting the word out about their products, because they have the added feature of being able to easily connect up into larger configurations. Meanwhile, ARRI slowly but surely was given this time to ramp up production and rollout the Orbiter. I spent a little time with it a couple days ago and as much as I thought it was an odd duck, I think it will swim like a swan. We’ll push panels to the background and lean towards PAR-replacing LEDs. In a sense it’s what the COB units have been all along... silent Joker killers. The Orbiter will continue that trend and eventually eat into their own HMI line. I realize that doesn’t answer your question... for me, I think the S60 Skypanel will fade in prominence on smaller sets as we see more RGB fresnels (Fiilex, ETC, Velvetlight), COBs (Orion), and future Orbiter competitors turn up the heat. There will always be a need for ARRI S360’s, Fiilex’s Quad units, or whatever large crane-rigged unit is Frankenstein’d together for Hollywood features, but once manufactures crack the LED PAR code, like Cineo’s R15, panels may go the way of the 2K zip. Meanwhile? Get a second Nova? 2X Nova through a 6X should be more than an S60 and when you don’t need that output you have a second unit to play with. Meanwhile, start adding quality point source RGBs to your arsenal and you’ll be ready to attack anything they throw at you! For me, as someone who is asked to solve often quite different lighting situations, I love having a stack of full color LED Kinos. When I don’t need all that output, I have nice lightweight units that are easy to rig, fly, and soften without all the weight that comes with more powerful units. I realize not everyone has that luxury. Let me know what way you go! End of year purchase?!
@@meetthegaffer wuau Luke! Lot of info here! Not and end of year purchase, I recently bought a Dedo 400DT with intensifier to work with crls and this has quite a lot of power! but looking for soft panel with output that could be my key light or top light and soften even more with 6x or so....but the market is so big....Gemini, Ledgo G260, Rayar mc 400, Nova 300, Lupo Super panel...maybe 2 Novas...budget is a concern too...I don´t know, actually thinking to get a 600D when they develop a leko, a big dome etc, but this gets other uses.....
Yeah, great review and all, but the DMG mix line are still a superior full spectrum light in my opinion. I am interested to see if the price points are comparable.
Tyler Horn Look to Curtis Judd and Andrew Lock’s channels for more in-depth technical reviews, but as I understand it this is more of a 5x emitter set up than a 6. Like pixel peeping, one can argue color til the cows come home. It’s important! And as users we want manufacturers to take it as seriously as possible while weighing cost and useability. A number of manufacturers have done a good job and as the tech improves we will see really good spectral response from very affordable units. The Nova is a good example of this progression.
How is the softness quality of the light? Knowing that's Kino Flo core competency, is it needed for the Nova? For example, I bought two Lowel TotaLEDs and still need to cover them with tracing paper to make them more pleasing despite the plastic diffuser. I assume given the modifier statement, its needed.
Totally depends how you are using it. If you are illuminating a white cyc or bouncing the unit, you won’t need to further diffuse it. Having that punch available is a great thing.
When using hardwire or wireless DMX I have been using Blackout Lighting Console on an iPad Pro, but Aputure also makes a BlueTooth controlled app called Sidus Link for phone or iPad that works well with all Aputure’s latest round of products; it’s intuitive and responsive. Hope that helps.
@@meetthegaffer Thank you for the quick reply. I am not of fan of BT. I prefer WiFi systems, a little more secure. More robust. On the east coast we are playing around with multiverse.... Cheers, CV
I just watched your most recent video where you showed a few different setups (the XR set and a couple of interview setups.) On the interviews, you used a S60 into an octabank in both. If you had this Nova P300c instead of the S60, would that have been just fine for those cases, or would there have been anything you'd be missing not having the S60?
For the interviews against the black background the Nova P300c would have been just fine. For the interview at the other business I may have gone to a thinner diffusion to boost the output.
There is a welding effect included. You may be able to modify one of the effects enough to creat the specific look you are looking for. It’s a very capable unit.
Luke, here is a difficult one for you - compared to Kino Diva 21 - how does it hold up? I guess about a stop, no Lumen radio, what about the full spectrum colour for skin tones, presumably no Louvres?
Interesting question... I don’t have the Diva 21’s; instead, I use 2X 2’ singles in an old style 2’x2 housing, and then use them for little add on glows, like a scratch or fill or over camera light. This unit feels like it would be great in a 3’ or 5’ Octa or an overhead lantern to light a round table with several guests. It’s a lot heavier than the 21, I imagine. Weight and slimness is why I like the Selects, because they can be pared down to almost nothing and are easy to fly. This feels more like a Skypanel type unit, but with a little more finesse, where as Kino is all finesse:) I can see how you’d want to compare them because the face is similar in size, but it also depends how one would use it. Kino definitely has the Lumen Radio, which is a huge plus if ur moving to wireless, but it’s easy to add a cintenna or go with the Sidus app if you have other Aputure units. My musings are probably not terribly helpful... Bottom line, it’s just so cool to have so many good tools readily available... can’t pick just one!
@@meetthegaffer I'm wondering...how well does it hold up at high frame rates? Is it prone to flickering? I wouldn't want to just assume it to be a-ok, if you know what I mean.
I think Curtis Judd played with that a bit in his review... I have not gone there just yet. Again, I’m not the greatest technical reviewer, more a hands on guy:)
Anecdotally, the output is somewhere between an S30 and an S60 and I think it’s safe to say that the color is better than a Skypanel, which is no knock on ARRI because this is just newer tech. Keep an eye out for vloggers with better tech chops than myself... my money is on Andrew Lock of Gaffer and Gear.
Luke Seerveld Wasn’t expecting that color would be that much better. Thanks! I was waiting on both of yours reviews anyway, professional gaffers’ reviews always have depth that videographers and bloggers usually don’t.
So I am running into a lighting problem that you must see all the time. I go to a location and it is all tungsten, I have all daylight, so I end up getting "white people" and "yellow" background. I just bought some gels so this will hopefully help in the near future, but I am thinking about RGBWW in '21. Would a color meter and 2x nova300c help me out? (I bring 2x godox vl300 with 38" soft boxes and a Forza 60 for scratch. Thanks
It’s more about what system you are used to working in. For instance, you may be given RGB or HSI reference numbers that you need to match for a company’s colors or print specs. Or you are working with a more theatrical situation and need to match gels. A Creative director or DP may want to work within a certain color palate and you are required to translate the references they give you into something your fixture can do. Having a number of different color systems available makes it more likely you’ll be able to speak their color language:)
Competition is always good. Maybe we see other manufacturers following with better apps and built-in wireless control. Softbox and Grid seem to take too much time to setup - would prefer a snapbag/snapgrid system over the included due to speed and neatness.
Well, that’s me not learning how to do it first... so in actual practice it would be very speedy... that was mostly for comic relief:) That said, there are a ton of other great options out there with larger and differently shaped diffusers that I am looking forward to trying: Honey Crates makes excellent crates and DoP Choice makes awesome soft boxes, while Chimera hasn’t slowed down either:)
I have seen pictures of the Rotolight Titan X2! That’s about all I know. My hunch is that the Rotolight is brighter because it’s larger, but size can be deceiving. The Nova will not blow away all other lights, but it will probably blow away anything in it’s price range:)
@@meetthegaffer Ah I see. I own a Titan X2 and thought you might have insight for a comparison. Would you consider the Nova c an industry standard light with the prefix to be used on a feature with Fx and green screen. I mean does its colour rendition qualify to be used on a commercial bankable production. Regards.
Although I have limited experience with the Nova P300c, I would not hesitate to use it on any set where I was using also Skypanels or Kinoflos or Cineos or DMG Lumiere or Fiilex units. It is probably time to shed some preconceived notions:)
@@meetthegaffer Thats very good to hear. I know Aputure have come leaps and bounds and have openly displayed their stance however talk is good but when it comes to the product I would prefer to get a non-bias opinion from an expert who trys and tests. Thank you for all your feedback.
This thing will be sold out like the MC no doubt and in fact, already is sold out lol. They are really putting a lot in this thing for the price. Even the RGB seems to be very strong. It seems that nothing was really an afterthought with this thing. This is a powerhouse of a light and with functions and adjustability that are extremely useful like the G/M adjustment. Next level stuff no doubt. I want two please lol.
In other videos you use the term "scratch light" a lot but I cannot find a definition anywhere. Is this just another term for a backlight? Not relevant to this video, but Google was not helping, so I had to ask:)
This is how I refer to an edge light that scratches the cheek of the talent grow 3/4 back rather than full back... if that makes sense. Most asked question:)
@@meetthegaffer It makes sense!!! I had a feeling it was something like that but I was surprised I could not find it listed as an "official term". Your videos are really a great way to learn how to use different instruments effectively. Love seeing all the variety of situations.
Great review! This really does look like a great alternative to Skypanels. We use a bunch of S30's at work and they're nice, but Very heavy and the GUI on the lights doesn't seem as intuitive and simple as Aputure's.
I believe that is a reflection of greenery outside that is sneaking in just beyond the 12X ultra bounce. One person crews leave something to be desired:)
Always love MTG reviews but I do prefer the 10-15 min approach over the 20-25 min. I don't need to see every FX mode and option for example. Just my .02!
Yes, it had a much fuller spectrum then I am used to seeing from LEDs, except from Kino Flo, and certainly better than Skypanels, but this is much newer tech, so that is understandable. That said, I don’t have much opportunity to work with units from Cineo or DMG Lumiere. BB&S has always been good on color too. Other reviewers like Curtis Judd and Andrew Lock will do a better job digging into the details!
@@meetthegaffer Oh you do a good job metering out the fixtures. You have done it before in the past. I was pleased to see on Instagram a post from Aputure saying the TLCI score was 95%
I don’t know, but they are quite different as fixtures go, so it’s not a helpful comparison. You would want to put the 300d II through diffusion and then hope for it to emit different colors:)

I think Curtis Judd played with that a bit in his review... I have not gone there just yet. Again, I’m not the greatest technical reviewer, more a hands on guy:)
Compare it’s output and color accuracy with Skypanels, please!
Great video. Can you please compare it to a Arri sky panel?
If you watch the Aputure roll out video Ted actually compares it to a Gemini 1x1 and S30. It comes in in between an S30 and S60.
@@meetthegaffer Will do. Thank you!
Your command of English is just fine!
Ha, ha! Thanks for reading my lame jokes;)
Thanks
What's the difference between gel mode and other color modes like HSI? Is it mostly for matching with other fixtures?
It’s more about what system you are used to working in. For instance, you may be given RGB or HSI reference numbers that you need to match for a company’s colors or print specs. Or you are working with a more theatrical situation and need to match gels. A Creative director or DP may want to work within a certain color palate and you are required to translate the references they give you into something your fixture can do. Having a number of different color systems available makes it more likely you’ll be able to speak their color language:)
@@meetthegaffer makes a lot of sense. Thanks!
between this and the yidobolo 3000c which do you think is the better buy and why? yidobolo is $300 cheaper and skypanel accessories will fit it
ruclips.net/video/reIs8QCj2NM/видео.html watch this first if you haven’t already and then consider if that $300 is worth your while.
Have you tested the Rotolight Titan X2 and if so does the Nova 300c light match up to the Titan X2
Tell us about that practical!!
It is indeed very practical.
Ha, ha!
Time brings innovation and advancement. This is not a particularly light unit... it’s solid, but it is well designed and intuitively laid out.
Is it true this light can measure the color temperature of ambient light and then easily match it?
I believe that is a feature of the app... which is then sent to the fixture:)
Where does that green stripe on the left picture frame come from?
I believe that is a reflection of greenery outside that is sneaking in just beyond the 12X ultra bounce. One person crews leave something to be desired:)
Always love MTG reviews but I do prefer the 10-15 min approach over the 20-25 min. I don't need to see every FX mode and option for example. Just my .02!
Heard that:)
So is the Nova going on your truck?
It will be now. I bring along the 300d II and 300x with fresnel and spotlight. A couple MC’s. I like having options:)
Did you color meter the light?
Yes, it had a much fuller spectrum then I am used to seeing from LEDs, except from Kino Flo, and certainly better than Skypanels, but this is much newer tech, so that is understandable. That said, I don’t have much opportunity to work with units from Cineo or DMG Lumiere. BB&S has always been good on color too. Other reviewers like Curtis Judd and Andrew Lock will do a better job digging into the details!
@@meetthegaffer Oh you do a good job metering out the fixtures. You have done it before in the past. I was pleased to see on Instagram a post from Aputure saying the TLCI score was 95%
Is this brighter than the 300d mkii on the 5600k setting?
I don’t know, but they are quite different as fixtures go, so it’s not a helpful comparison. You would want to put the 300d II through diffusion and then hope for it to emit different colors:)
1:51 Looked like Blade Runner 2049!!! So Cool!
Fun!
So it’s similar to an S30 Skypanel?
oops😬 (you answered this)
Timing 😅👌
Did you leak what the practical light is called? 87c!!!!!!!!??????
I did not:)
What are rabbit ears?

WAAAAIIT a second. Is that the Aputure Bulb you've got in that practical!?! ;)
I cannot confirm or deny:)
Since Luke won't say, I was just over on the Aputure site, and it appears to be their not-yet-released "Accent B7C" - 7 watt, screws into a standard light bulb socket, with Sidus control. I'm very interested!
Yes, they teased it at the end of the roll out video today just after noon... it was like the last 2 seconds of the video:) It’s been out and about. Works great. Looking forward to playing with it a bit before they launch. The Astera NYX bulbs will be fun to play with too. There is a lot to like about the lighting tools available to us right now!
@@tomdchi12 Yeah I've been curious about that one since I saw Ted talking about it at NAB 2019.
Hmmm, wonder what's in that lamp ;)
Ha, ha!
Are you now getting free gear. Sweet.
With great power comes great responsibility... if I was Spider-Man:)
Any gaffers in the comments from NY
Sneaky... with the light bulbs... I can't wait for those.
I couldn’t either! You will not be disappointed.
Is it a NYX bulb ? 😄
Nope. I’ve ordered them but have not seen them yet.
My Aputure Nova was faulty! Listen here: ruclips.net/video/c3hWI_sH_nQ/видео.html Anyone else have issues with this light?
Wow, so you really can gaff from home whilst lying in bed! I'll see if my clients will still pay my day rate.
Can’t hurt to try!
who reads those first :)
Right?! 😂
