The vocals for ‘N’yanyan’ were recorded in Bamako on August 18, 2020, the night of a coup d’état that marked another period of instability for Mali, a country troubled by severe political upheaval for almost a decade. Inspired by the turbulent events happening around her, Rokia delivered a profound vocal performance in a single take, just before the power was shut down and a curfew imposed on the city. Fittingly, it is a song with an existentialist theme about the ephemeral nature of life and the things that cannot be explained, encouraging us to accept and embrace them bravely.

I heard this song on the radio after feeling like the world was beating me down, one problem after another. I couldn't help but think why? Why is this happening to me? I may not have understood the language of the song, but I felt the meaning - sometimes there is no answer to the why, it just is, "the difficulty is only a moment in time." Such a powerful and provocative song.

I’ve been listening to this song all day. Everything about it, her vocals, the words, the message, the video, the circumstances that made it come to be, have touched me and stuck with me. I think Rokia Koné will soon get much more attention throughout Africa, the diaspora, and the world. Though I do have one question: what is N’yanyan? Is it a feeling, or a spirit or deity, or something else? I’m very curious.
The answer is... all these things. The word is used in the lyrics as if it were someone's name, but it's meant to represent the things that cannot be explained. A very universal message.
