I've seen all the films on this list. And while they all shocked me, The Mist was the most shocking to me because, years before the film was made, I had read the short story. After leaving the store, their fate was ambiguous. They weren't shot and killed before the military showed up to save the day. They instead just continued to drive on. We never learn if they survive or not, though we do learn that David's wife died, having been killed and stuffed with spider-esque eggs. But we never learn if the mist is all over the world, or if they reach a safe haven before running out of gas. The story literally just ends with them driving off through the mist. So, to watch the film and see David kill them all, including his son, before the military showed up was not only a drastic change from the strory, but also unbelievably shocking and depressing.
My daughter, who was rather young at the time, literally blurted out"I bet he feels stupid" Having read the original story, which didn't end this way at all, it was quite the shock.
If you listen closely to the main theme (You're Just What I've Been Looking For a.k.a. Angela's Theme), it subtly reveals that Angela is not who she seems. Listening to the song first time (not viewing the film) it seems like someone who is just hurt (ex-boyfriend etc.) Listening to it again, and the lines about "the pain you have to hide" take on a whole new meaning.
I remember before The Ring came out, some friends and I were at San Diego ComiCon. There was a large barrel filled with unlabeled VHS tapes and a sign that said, " Free! Take One! " I stuck one in my backpack and we didn't remember about it until a couple of weeks later. We popped it in and the most disturbing images began to play. We were horrified and shocked. One of my friends started to cry and kept saying, " Why would someone do this?! What does it mean?!" Months later, when the trailer came out, we then understood. It was a great marketing plan!
I remember seeing the 1st Saw in theaters and when the "dead" guy got up from that floor, said "Game Over" then shut the door, the whole theater fell silent. We were all just internally screaming WTF 😅 And I am surprised Sinister isn't on here. Definitely had a good plot twist I didn't see coming. A very good horror movie to watch also.

The end of the Mist was so rough. Scares and horror don't bother me. But when I realized what had happened, and what that poor father had done to try to save his family and the old couple a much worse fate is just... It was rough. The end of The Orphanage though, that was full on really disturbing. The "happy tragedy" of it actually messed with my head for a few days.

God the Mist is still one of the most gut wrenching endings to me so far. The sheer pain of deciding to painlessly end your loved ones to prevent them from suffering a far worse, and painful fate, only for the military to show up seconds later would be devastating. Especially how young the kid, and the lady was, they still had so much time to live through. Honestly wouldn’t surprise me if he’d ended up taking his own life from the overwhelming grief. Sixth Sense ending was also kinda depressing, being took away from the love of your life would suck. Then seeing them walk around, but not being able to talk to them, or comfort them either. Watch mojo:" its not everyday you get to put the vengeful spirit of a dead child to rest." Cassidy from fnaf ( golden freddy's soul / the vengeful spirit of fnaf ) : ?????, BOI.
Wow, I never expected to see High Tension again. Every time I mention it, no one has a clue what movie I'm talking about. When it was released, I was eleven years old. It absolutely traumatized me. Because of this movie, I will forever have navarrofobia, yet everyone points blame at Children of the Corn (stupidest fucking movie ever, right next to any of the Chucky ones). At the time, I was absolutely petrified by this one, though. It was the first horror film I'd ever seen with a "real" killer... no masks, no voice modifiers, no demons from the underworld. Just a classic tale of a twisted mind causing very raw terror in a completely realistic situation. Watching this movie almost twenty years later does not have nearly the same effect. In fact, there are so many holes in the plot that I'm more critical of it than anything, but it certainly made its mark on me. It's a good throwback, for sure.
One of my favourite horror movie plot twists: the actors were hired to play in a horror movie, and then realise that they are not only the protagonists, but the director is the villain. Remember Human Centipede 3? That was supposed to be a comedy, but its actually terrifyingly funny and terrifying too.
Yes! That's one of the few horror movies as a kid I could actually watch without being disgusted. It had some scary moments for sure, but the mystery drew me in
I would love to watch one of these horror movie lists and not have Psycho or The Exorcist not be the top movie. I’m sure all of it was insanely shocking and scary at the time. But it’s so well known now that’s it’s hard to even imagine it as a twist or scary.

I love a good twist at the end of any movie like the Saw franchise and the kid's show from the 90s Goosebumps had the best twist in the end of each episode.

Thanks a lot .... i wanted to know the movies but the woman started directly with the plots... so stupid!
thank you
The Invisible man? Really? That's not a twist. Come on mojo!
it was but it was a mehhhh twist.
personally,I think the ending of the original Black Christmas is one of the best twists in a movie I’ve seen.the fact that the final girl thought her boyfriend was the killer/Billy Lenz and killed him - only to reveal in the final seconds of the films that Billy was never caught and is still in the house
16:44 I've never watched it but I nearly cried
You should of included sleep away camp that ending was amazing
Orphan is and will always be one of my most favourite movies. I've watched it more times than I can count.
How about. Frailty (2001)
Fantastic movie
That one was amazing
I was gonna say that the twist for Sleepaway Camp is another good one.
Watch mojo:" its not everyday you get to put the vengeful spirit of a dead child to rest."
Cassidy from fnaf ( golden freddy's soul / the vengeful spirit of fnaf ) : ?????, BOI.
OMGGGG I BEEN LOOKING FOR THE MOVIE ORPHAN LIKE OMG
"Us" has the best twist
16:18 that moment of regret lmao
The Mist is literally one of my favorite monster movies and the ending is brutal.
We all knew Psycho would be number one!
I didn't.... Don't Look Now should be number 1 and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978) should be at least an honourable mention!
yep the grand-daddy of all plot twists was shocking in 1960. every 'thriller' released after it tried to immitate it
When a stranger calls did it better!
Exactly! I heard the call was coming from inside the house, and I immediately thought she was discussing When a Stranger Calls!
That movie made me scared so much of phones since I was young
3:12 Muse’s song called New Born from their Origin Of Symmetry album is playing in the background here for all of you Muse fans!
The mists ending will never not be heartbreaking
One of my favourite horror movie plot twists: the actors were hired to play in a horror movie, and then realise that they are not only the protagonists, but the director is the villain. Remember Human Centipede 3? That was supposed to be a comedy, but its actually terrifyingly funny and terrifying too.
The Unknown, a silent film starring Lon Chaney, Sr. He killed the girls parents...and had arms.
Identity is such a great movie! I can watch it over and over and never get sick of it. It's in my top ten lists of any movie ever.
I'm so happy SAW was high ranked, it was such a good twist noone could've seen it coming and if you say you did you're lying
you forgot the movie hide and seek, where the father was charlie all along
so true
Loved that movie!
Oh yeah! Totally original twist!
Oh my god I forgot about that movie! That’s a good one
Yes! That's one of the few horror movies as a kid I could actually watch without being disgusted. It had some scary moments for sure, but the mystery drew me in
Esther was burnt into my mind, thumbnail finna give me nightmares
Phyco is the king of plot twist 👑👑
I’ve heard Noah from the Scream series say that April Fools Day has a terrible alternate ending
yo i love when esther takes her teeth out lmfao!!!
Noice! 😂😂
The Others makes me so sad:(
I would love to watch one of these horror movie lists and not have Psycho or The Exorcist not be the top movie. I’m sure all of it was insanely shocking and scary at the time. But it’s so well known now that’s it’s hard to even imagine it as a twist or scary.
YESSSSSSS I watched Us at a theater and I swear the plot twist left me with my mouth open, such a good movie. Once you watch it again you start rooting for Red instead.
The Mist ending was masterpiece
The orphan was my favorite as a kid! I never actually get it because I was a kid, but I was so interested in it so much! I got so mad when my uncle lost because my dad gave it to him for my cousin to see it.
