Nikolai Gomon, a labor teacher, was appointed director of the museum on October 1, 1908. Since 1924, the museum has been referred to as the Museum of Local Lore. Since 1930, the museum has been located in a one-story Treasury building. Since 1939, scientific and research work has begun in the museum, after expeditions to the territory of Adjara began in the museum, as a result of which museum materials were collected. Since 2005, the museum has been awarded the name of H. Akhvlediani. The museum houses 180,000 exhibits - unique objects, collections, photographs, art samples, manuscripts and documentary materials, flora and fauna of Adjara. The museum's collection contains significant written sources, up to about 6,000 items, among them there are world-class manuscripts and a unique book collection.
