Queen Bass player John Deacon came up with the melody , and main riff. YES you have heard other artists use this riff in their music . Rumor has it that David Bowie was visiting the studio where Queen was cutting their record, and They collaborated on this song and wrote it in one day.
There are good interviews with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on how this song came about. It was a chance event really, unplanned. After John Deacon got the bassline, they all went out for pizza (and a few drinks). When they returned, the bassline had been forgotten! Luckily Roger Taylor managed to get it back from memory. Also, Freddie and David were trying to outdo each other with the vocal harmonies. What I always regret is that they never performed it together. Bowie followed Queen at Live Aid then later that evening Freddie and Brian came back to perform one more song. Would have been great if Queen and David had performed this. David Bowie never did this song in his live shows after, though Queen did. But David did sing it just once, in 1992 at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, with Annie Lennox. The other three Queen members are the band. Someone has done a fantastic piece of editing and mixed footage of Freddie singing it in Queen's final shows in 1986, with David singing it in 1992, and it's just like they were doing it live together.

Written by Queen & David Bowie!! The sad irony.....David & Freddie fell-out with each other when they were laying down the vocals. Control, ego, jealousy.....but the beauty of it all.....ALL of it went into the song. The art never suffered only the friendship. At the time fans of both didn't know any of this.....all we thought was....THIS could be the start of a beautiful musical friendship.
Freddie was definitely an outstanding artist, but David Bowie's whole musical catalog is to blow anyone's mind! I have never known any other artist to be that original and sophisticated level as him
This is one on Rock's best collaborations ever. Unfortunately Bowie and Mercury never got the opportunity to do this song live together or to make a video together, both so busy they never were able to find the time. This song just kind of happened when Queen was recording in Montreux while David was living there and dropped into the studio to say hey. They started drinking and jamming, John had the bass riff and the song took off from there. Such an iconic song, thank you for reacting to it.
As others have said you should check out when they did this at Wembley ‘86. The few minutes before the track actually begins, it shows how Freddie could have the whole crowd in the palm of hand.

@@jessii27star Hi Jessica. Well, it is an excellent editing mix of the two shows. Brilliantly done. Particularly the editing out of Annie Lennox so only Bowie was seen. Many people say that the only real chance they had to perform together was at Live Aid in 1985. (I watched the whole concert on the live telecast while in New Zealand. About 15 hours if the simulcast with Philly in the USA is included.) But at Live Aid each Band was only allowed 20 minutes and then their mics and sound would be turned off.
