Johnny ripping his own torso off and becoming a bloody recolor was neat! Reminded me of the old Perform Fatality on Self (Watch ME explode) Game Genie code for MKII on the Genesis. Baraka's second fatality might be too much for RUclips, though. 👀 Another great video.
It's not as fun without the garbled graphics, but it's still really cool to see this version broken. Does anyone know what's going on under the hood that the animations would wig out so much if it's against a character that's just a recolor?
The fatality animation at the end must be similar to Johnny Cage’s, and not similar to Kitana’s or Baraka’s. It has to be the head scarf that covers her face: no green palette one, only blue or purple. Head must fall to the floor for Cage, and head taken to be eaten for Reptile. The green scarf, silly enough, may be the reason why. A “head with a green scarf” doesn’t exist in the games code, so it crashes. As for Kitana and Baraka, whose opponent’s head falls to the ground, I guess the game somehow bypasses this with a blank image and then another Jade palette. I say they’re linked those two fatalities in animation and code execution.
My guess is, in the case of the ports, the characters lack the sprites and palettes since the body parts are counted as separate objects. The PSX version was coded quite differently from the arcade version

only problem is, she doesn’t have a body part palette for fatalities
Then, the game could easily just have loaded Kitana's BP palette by default.
