Solid coding! The loaded sprites don't change at all, except when it's one shared by all fighters (like Scorpion's burning-skeleton and Subzero's frozen-fighter). Aside from that, despite not loading new graphics, seems like all fatalities proceed as usual, as long as the sprite index requested exists within the loaded sprites. And if it doesn't, no crash, but a reset
Fun fact : when Smoke's head gets ripped off, it becomes unmasked since ninjas and cage was portrayed by Dan Pesina =) P. S. When you watch Cage fatalities on smoke, remember the line from 1995 movie: "This is where you fall now."

Oh yeah, I forgot there was PS1 port of MK2. I have heard about it and how it was only exclusive to Japan, but even then, I still forgot about it. Also, Johnny should be in shock from the sight of his own head coming out of Smoke!
Really interesting that the game goes for that head, instead of resetting from a lack of sprite, or using another sprite loaded at that same index. To me it seems like Smoke is either specifically coded to have that head, intentionally or not, or that the head object defaults to Johnny Cage's when it doesn't receive correct information to load a specific one when it appears
