    Your videos are interesting because of your personality and presentation style. Let’s face it there are tons of CosTubers if you just want to watch someone make pretty dresses. I was initially drawn to your channel because you’re one of the few making costumes in larger sizes, but definitely stick around for your personality.

    There is no shame in continuously using a pattern that fits you well especially as it suits you so splendidly. :}

      Absolutely! Patterns are expensive. If you have a good one that fits well and can be used with different kinds of fabrics…got for it. One one is really going to know, the will be admiring the fabric.

    This was so fun... Perhaps now you kinda have a set block for gunnesax dresses, perhaps you can do a "birthstone" gunnesax project... Either all 12 done by you, or find 11 other sewers to have each of you do one for each of your birth months.

    Fit issues do add bite to your videos, but a bodice block pattern that is universal would save you some serious headaches. Go for the bodice block pattern that best suits you. You have received sage advice.🙂

    I am not opposed to the bodice block, mostly because then it would be an opportunity to learn how a basic block can be altered to create many different pieces.
    Another gorgeous Gunne Rebecca!

  • @seaweednz
    @seaweednz 2 года назад +4

    Go for the bodice block. It'll still be interesting with different fabrics, how you alter the various bits to suit your purpose, and your design choices. What I like is your thought process. It really helps me understand WHY you do things a particular way, whether it is personal preference or for a functional reason, or a design choice.

    I actually think that a sloper pattern could be very interesting, because for different dresses/garments it would still mean changing the generic sloper to a particular pattern with style lines. I really want a sloper, and I want to learn how to adjust the shape of neckline and style lines. I also imagine it would make sewing easier for you, which would be a pro:)

  • @Skirt553
    @Skirt553 2 года назад +2

    Honestly, a basic bodice pattern would be good. You can then show how you change that bodice for projects that have different shapes to the bodice. As others have said, I appreciate seeing someone who is plus-sized explaining how they adjust things to fit comfortably, as I am also plus-sized. Plus, you feel approachable and have a warmth to you that I really enjoy watching. You've got an enthusiasm for your projects, even the ones that are aggravating, that is fun to watch.

    Uncloaking to say - More please! I'd love to see a version for Valentine's day, St Patrick's, Independence Day, Disney, and autumn. The same pattern isn't an issue. If you get bored, you can always adjust the neckline, vary the sleeves & number of ruffles. Also different varying trims could make the dresses quite unique from each other. The style is soooo flattering for you & you look so happy wearing them. (BTW have you ever noticed that Queen Elizabeth wears only variations of the same dress. She changes fabrics & details, then adds different accessories & hats. If you didn't - see how well it works?)

    I still have my Gunne Sax dress from 1978, that I wore for a prom dress. It is a printed pattern with a light blue background and tiny purple flowers. It has a white lace up front and a white lace jacket. I get it out every once in a while just to go down memory lane. Out of all the “fancy” dresses I have owned I still think it’s the prettiest.

    This dress turned out so beautiful! My personal opinion on the sleeves is that they don't look too wide, partly because the sleeve style and fabric pattern have such a delicate feel that it counteracts any impression of broadness or blockiness. One possibility if you decide that the neckline is a little too bare is: piping! About halfway through the video, I found myself thinking, "This dress would *love* some piping... but don't comment, because she's already got all those seams in!" On the whole, this dress is a confection in the best possible way, and I adore it; the gloves you paired it with in the reveal video were the perfect addition.

    As a beginner, it's nice to see how you work through the struggles and problems you're having, but I don't think you should suffer unnecessarily for it! If making a bodice block would make your life easier, I think you should definitely do that! And there's always going to be something to be learned from how you draft it and how you adapt it for different styles :)

    You look very nice in those dresses! Use a pressing cloth to iron those melty fabrics. A white cotton cloth over the top of what you are pressing. The whole time I was watching you try and pick a blue trim for the ruffle, I was thinking "use the white sleeve material"! The dress turned out very cute and I love that you use what you have!

    No, they won't get boring. As someone who makes the same patterns over and over, just the different fabrics will cause fitting problems. Trims. last minute changes, shortages in fabric, there is ALWAYS something to cause problems. We're here to visit while you make things. It can take you several videos to make one thing, we don't mind. You can have problems or things can go smooth as butter, that's all fine, too. This dress came out BEAUTIFULLY!

    LOL no your videos are not boring when you don't have fit issues. Not worrying about that stuff allows you to spend your time on creativity rather than frustration. Back in 1982, my grandmother made a Gunne Sax dress for me. I was 12. It was for a portrait that my sister and I were going to be having made. I LOVED that dress! But, it was too dressy to wear much, so I only wore it for the picture. But, I loved it so much! It had the white puffy sleeves. The bodice and skirt were brown with tiny little flowers. The bodice had all the ribbon and buttons (hashtagobviouslyduh, it's Gunne Sax). And I thought it was amazing! Edited to add: the pattern was Simplicity 5119. Man, I loved that dress! LOL

    I think it helps everybody to see how you deal with fit issues, since so many of us struggle with that. Having somebody with skills show how to fix them is really a good service for viewers. The dress turned out really pretty. I have one question, and I wonder if it's something that is being taught now. So many sewists, to my eye, put buttons really close together and have more buttons down the front than looks "right" to me. Is there some formula being taught, such as how to divide the opening (or area of trim) length for spacing, and does it take into account the size of the button? Thanks.

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  2 года назад +3

      Honestly, when I'm looking at decorative buttons like these, I just go with whatever interval looks right. If they're functional, you have to keep in mind placement (esp around the bust), and to not space them too far apart. But I've never heard of any hard and fast rule for spacing buttons.

    The finished dress looks beautiful! I love the ribbon tie better than the velvet. You could just add thread loops (like the type used instead of a button hole only big enough to go completely around the ribbon without bunching it up) to the sides of the dress to hold the ribbon in place a little. I think everyone can benefit from a basic bodice block to get that perfect fit every time. Changing the style lines on a bodice block is usually easier and less frustrating than making several mockups of a pattern that does not fit right to begin with. Happy New Year!

    Such a cute dress! Having the white sleeve fabric repeated at the ruffle really balances out the whole dress, I think that was a much better choice than any of the other fabrics.
    Also the contrasting sleeves work super well! I don't think they make you look very wide at the shoulders, because you've mentioned before that you have naturally sloping shoulders, which I feel balances it out.
    I think it's also good that the white ribbons don't extend all the way to the top because the sleeves are also white, so the white doesn't become too dominant at the top of the shoulders (and it might also alter again how the shoulders look, for better or worse).
    For me this video is still interesting, I just love seeing the design process and the decisions that are made when making a garment!

    Love the dress! And I really Like seeing you repeat a pattern since I feel that's how one does for daily wear, the first is a test, the second is conformation and the third is playtime! Now you know the pattern and don't have to take time to check fit and troubleshoot things so you have more fun in design. And I don't think the white sleeves makes your proportions look wide at all!

    As soon as you showed us the sleeves I thought to myself that this seemed like a project that would look really cute with buttons, and then lo and behold, you added buttons! They really add an extra something to the dress that I think is very pretty if subtle. The finished product is so cute and I love the materials you chose!

      @@LadyRebeccaFashions it is an expensive mistake for me, even with cheap fabric, but she is currently languishing on my dress form until I can figure out a way to make it better.

    It is sooo BEAUTIFUL. And it's BLUE!!!!
    The finished product looks fabulous on you. I don't think it makes you look wider through the shoulders. It's so blessed adorable on you. Happy New Year, too!

    Using a sloper for your patterns isn't boring. It'll allow you to be more creative. The Closet Historian makes all her own patterns (except for her costumes). She's not boring and neither are you!

    You made the right decision with regards to the all the trim and tying-up the sleeves to the main dress as I really Hated all the Materials you are showing to attach the ruffle to the skirt, I really love all three dresses.
