It's done! This Gunnesaxoween costube collaboration has been so much fun, and I am super happy with my new cottagecore meets witchcore dress (I think I'm going to have to wear this at other times of year, too.)
And I heard that maybe there will be a similar collab for Christmas Gunne Sax dresses?

I had a Gunnesax dress back in the day. It was several coordinating fabrics in navy with floral patterns. Sweetheart neck, navy velvet ribbon trim and wide straps so it could be worn as a sundress or a jumper. One of my favorite dresses of all time. The fabric you chose is quite possibly the most fabulous Halloween fabric I have ever seen!

I had one when I was a kid. My dress also had a matching shall.
I also had a pajama robe for Christmas too. Looking back at old photos , yikes that was something .

Since I am of an age that Gunne Sax dresses were brand new and trending when I was in high school so I have a very soft spot for them. I even made them as my concert dresses (I play Cello) and eventually my wedding dress. I think you did a fine job on this one. the choice of fabric and trim is perfect for the challenge. I will add (from my 5+ decades of sewing experience) If you had shifted the front panel down to where it met the two side panels you would not have had the gapping at the neckline and you would not have had to cut down the sweetheart neckline, it was already there just up too high. In the original Gunne Sax dresses the "belt" was actually a waistband so the bodice would be short waisted because the "belt" would be where you could lengthen or shorten where the waist falls according to your body shape. I am the same size as you so it is nice to see how this could look on me. . .all these years later. .. ha ha ha

Excellent reply. Great tips. Plus, yeah, I have wondered how they would look on me all these years later, as well. I think I'm going to be brave and make a dress or two in my size.

@@kathyjohnson2043 . . .ha ha ha I have zero pics of me playing my cello back in the 70's. Let alone in one of the home made Gunne Sax dresses. (You know I always had to have a long skirt because of the cello). But now I play for my own enjoyment and mostly celtic or tantric music and if I do play for an audience I am in costume and usually informal around a campfire. (I am a Renaissance/Fantasy cosplayer)

I am super curious what the drafting answer is to your frequent gaping neckline problem! A video where you consult another costuber or professional sewist on the topic could be interesting!

You have captured the romance and femininity of Gunnesax. Their stores were like a BoHo fairyland of ornate/shabby chic. As I high schooler, I felt so pretty in the soft floaty fabric, puffy sleeves, fancy trims and swirly skirts! My dad would wait on a chair that looked like a beat-up throne until he paid the bill. I would strut away with him, clutching my precious shopping bag. Thanks for bringing back such a nice memory.

As someone who wore and adored Gunne Sax dresses in my teens, I will put in my 2 cents worth that the belt is a must for the authentic Gunne Sax look. There just isn't quite enough detail and embellishment without it. Great project! Have fun wearing it for many Autumn's to come.

I love these dresses & was forced to search my old school pictures. Sure enough 1978-1979 I was sporting an orange and beige version of this, with ruffles vs lace trim. Thanks for the memories 😁

My mom had a very similar gunne sax dress that she made for 4-H when she was a kid. Growing up I always thought it was the coolest thing, and I always wanted to wear it. Unfortunately my mother has always had a very small frame, while I have always been very broad, so it never really fit me.
But, now I'm an adult, and if I want to, (and I do!!) I can make my own!

I love this dress. I was alittle concerned about the width of the sleeves, but when looking at the total outfit, they were perfection!! I think it's funny that your parents had different points of view on the belt. Men usually seem to like a belted waist on women and women don't!! I guess if you are out hoping to attract a male's attention, use the belt and if not, don't. LOL! Personally, I like the belted look the best, but that is just me liking to see more of a curve at the waist instead of a rectangle look. It could also be that I have a rectangle shape and I have never liked it. I have always wanted some curves! Anyway, congrats on the dress! It looks beautiful on you and yes, I think you could wear this anytime in the Fall/Winter.

    • @SusieQ3
      @SusieQ3 2 года назад +4

I like it with the belt, better. It adds more of the trim detail which I feel is needed to pull the whole bodice together. Without the belt, the trim on the princess seams just sort of stop, and it seems like something is missing. Plus, I like how narrow it makes her waist look!
Either way, the dress is phenomenal, and she looks beautiful in it. ❤️

It looks more gunnesax with the belt. I would keep the ease in the top because that is more the style and helps with the comfort. You did a great job with this dress and you look fabulous in it.

Personally, I think the belt makes the dress look finished. Love the colors on you even though they're not among my favorite colors. In fact it's fabulous. I'm a Spring so give me lots of Springy colors or jewel tones in cool colors.

Always loved these dresses! This looks super cute on you, and it also looks super comfortable, too.
I prefer the belt, because of the way the trim adds that little "sump'n-sump'n" across the waist, but the fact you get two different looks with and without it is a definite plus.
Love that fabric, and I agree that at a distance it's subtle enough to wear anytime.
I love watching you solve your issues as you sew!
Absolutely love how this turned out, and no, you don't *need* that corduroy over it.

I love this dress. So cute. I like it better though with the belt. I remember being a teenager during the height of the Gunnesax crazy. I love the dress style, but my parents were too poor to afford these dresses, especially for 4 daughters. I wish I had learn to sew, but I was too busy in high school taking advanced classes to take home economics and sewing class. My high school counselor would have killed me. Oh well. I am glad I have found your channel and I can enjoy your wonderful creations. Thanks a lot. Looking forward to your Christmas edition of the dress. : )

Tap dancing at the end! Awesome! Dress is super cute, and (of course!) brings back fond memories of the original dresses we all loved so much in the 70's and 80's. I love how you crossed over the seam with the trim. It really does make a difference in the overall look. (I confess that I have, at times, not made the changes that I knew needed to be made, simply because I was too lazy to unpick trim I had already sewn down.). Thank you for sharing your inner debate!

You're right about the fabric-- even up close you don't really notice it's "Hallowe'en!". First you notice cats, then the half-moons, then you see the raven with the witch hat. I like the belt on a lot, it really gives the Gunnesax vibe. I would have voted for one line of trim, only to save you the extra work-- I think either would have been fine, since it's such a distance from the bodice trim.

The GunneSax style always appealed to me so it seems perfectly acceptable that you all are doing this challenge!
That sleeve was so much wider than I thought it would be from the flat piece... The final shape was lovely! I was also shocked that the poll was resoundingly in favor of the two rows narrow vs one row wider ribbon, since I thought the wide ribbon was better.
All in all, the dress came out beautifully and you look adorable wearing it! (Definitely Victorian school girl vibes in your modeling video!)

I grew up and learned to sew during the Gunne Sax era. If you look at sewing patterns of the era, the sleeve shape is quite hourglass shaped with the fullness at the top of the sleeve and about half the width at the cuff. Unless you're making a leg-o'-mutton sleeve (wide, gathered and poofy from shoulder to elbow and close fitting from elbow to wrist) feel free to trim that sleeve down to a tighter fit.

    Love how that turned out!
Before I learned the value of The Mockup, I made a rectangles-and-gores housedress (in purple flannel) and didn't adjust the rectangular sleeves, they were too long for two reasons - I added cuff at the last minute, and the shoulders were so much wider than my own.... I ended up making a button and loop on each elbow to hold them out of my way! Perhaps someday I shall revisit that but it was hand-felled and I just don't feel like unicking that much stitching when I have other projects to get to. Lesson learned, fix it in the mockup or it ain't getting fixed!

Your dress looks awesome, I love the fabric print & I can see that neck working well for renaissance & medieval dresses too!
