What Changes did Ruger make to the Ruger Precision Rifle?

- This video talks about the changes Ruger made to the Ruger Precision Rifle in April 2021. After chatting with Ruger they consider the changes in 2021 to be a slight generation change and refer to the latest RPRs as Gen 3.5.
The major changes are in the fire control system. They redesigned the firing pin back, firing pin, trigger housing, and bolt shroud.
Generations of RPR's:
Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3 and Gen 3.5

Thanks for the information. I do appreciate it.
Black shirt, black gun and dark room, I have a hard time seeing any detail in the video on my computer.
Yea, sorry about that. We wont do that again.
Exactly what i was thinkimg.

Post-view video , Befoe viewing.
Redo if not more than acceptable . . .
I go to my local gun store and asked about this, they're clueless believe it or not! So now looking for another gun store that have quality, knowledgeable people. Thanks for the info!
Do it. Hopefully you find a good one.
Sounds like you went to impact guns.
This is a big plus for Anarchy Outdoors. I placed an order online, and no problem was involved, but the shipping cost was too low no pop-up indicating priority mail selection first-class mail only. I called Anarchy Outdoors to upgrade to priority mail, at no charge. Always go priority mail an old PO employee.
Thanks for your feedback.
No, thank you for the upgrade. I wanted to pay the extra cost, but I was told, no.
I just received my new Ruger Precision and found it's the new Gen 3.5 style! This video was the first time i had heard of the 3.5 gen? I have a firing pin I had order before this information and have been told there are no firing pins available for the 3.5 gen.? When will these firing pins for the new 3.5 be available??
The new firing pins are on road map. We do not have an eta as of now.
Not as of yet.
Can you buy the entire bolt mechanism and update the entire mechanism to put in the gen 3
Not that we are aware of.
I am sorry if you listed the reason for the NEED to change out the shroud I missed it, unless you was indidcating the the shroud will protect the cocking mechenism.
The main reason is to add weight. The more weight help the bolt run and feel smoother.
so all of the customshop rprs have the updated bolt?
Yes and all RPRs after April of 2021.
Is it possible to get a New gen bolt group and put it into an older model rifle?
No they are serialized by Ruger. But you can replace all of the inner parts with offerings from our website.
Having trouble finding information on this from Ruger. Only thing I have found is a safety bulletin relating to their own aluminum shroud interfering with the cocking piece. They're saying that they switched out the shrouds to fix the issue, but I am not seeing anything about the cocking piece.
Ruger made the changes and did not really announce it. We have been working with these rifles since they came out. We were also give a list of changes by the product line manager of the RPR.
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial Ah, ok. Yea, I went back and looked at my cocking piece after posting and saw that it was different than the malfunctioning one you showed, so I figured Ruger did something. Was just glad to know that mine doesn’t have that issue. And, in the process, I also learned that I don’t have the bolt shroud issue either. So, that’s good.
@@JB_Hobbies the bolt shroud issue they changed in 2016 I believe on the gen 2s.
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial Ah, ok. That was way before I bought mine then.
Okay so I have a few questions, I live in Australia I have a RPR 5.56/.223, a .22 And a .338LM, My 5.56 has over 4k rounds through it and I would like to know what 1/7 match barrel I should get for it before it wears out, I'm still getting 5 shot groups under .3" at 100 meters when I'm driving it correctly. Should I polish my bolts with a buffer & should I use a sonic cleaner to clean my muzzle breaks?
I would get whatever your barrel you can in Australia. Their are plenty of good options. Polishing never hurt anything. Sonic cleaner is the best way to clean a nitrated break. Just watch what chemicals you put in it.
So what does the new gen mean for shooting performance? Is it more durable now does the rifle shoot more accurately? What do the new changes mean in terms of performance?
The firing control system is much more durable. Performance is the same.
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial thank you!
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial would you take this new Ruger Precision Rifle over the Savage 110 Elite? Or even DD Delta 5 pro?
This is what I want to know as well lol I can’t decide between those exact 2 rifles
@@huntertullgren2914 check out the MPA BA pro 2 rifle it’s better than those!
Yeah, I'm like you Rodger: I recently bought myself a RPR (.300 PRC), and the Cabela's site stated it as "Gen 3". I had searched to see what changes would designate it as such. I noticed that on my factory installed handguard, the bottom is flattened and set up to receive clamps, and even possibly attach to a track. It would seem I purchased a backup firing pin that is not needed and will have to purchase one that is suitable (that sucks). Okay. So, when are we going to see them? Haven't disassembled down to the pin yet, so I don't know which one is installed. I also replaced the bolt shroud to what seems to be a squared-off titanium version (the latest, according to the video); the bolt on my weapon did come with the newer design, as well. All other parts are the same: stock, trigger, brake. Interesting information, this video. Wish there were/had been an easier way to discern all of this beforehand and before upgrade purchases that are incompatible or obsolete. So be it. I'm thoroughly satisfied with the purchase overall---even found some ammunition for it!
This video does not apply to the RPR Magnums that includes the 300 PRC. This video only applies to the short action (also excludes the 6.5 prc) models.
We currently have both the firing pin back and pins for the RPR Magnum. Here are the links.

@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial Thank you for the update! I've picked up some of my upgrades from AO, and like your organizations site. Nevertheless, thank you for the video and clarity.
@@Ignorin_Rad Anytime.
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial Since we're here...a question. Will the Magpul PRS stock be compatible/functional with the Ruger .300 PRC? I actually like the factory stock, but I also have the Mag PRS still boxed. Just wondering.
@@Ignorin_Rad yes it is compatible.
Good info but holding the black bolts against a black background at that distance is not easy to see. Why not lay them on the table and then make it clear which is which, right/left.
Noted. We will do better.
I have a precision 22 mag. Do I need to include myself in these changes to the bolt or am I good.
These changes are just centerfire related.
Hey guys love the videos and ultimately is what made me pick the Ruger over some of the other options I was considering. Quick question I’m having one slight problem. The little cover on the Bolt itself that has the ruger symbol that comes off so you can “store” things inside of it keep popping off and won’t stay seated in place. Is this a common issue or something that can be fixed that I’m missing ? I don’t want to just take it off and leave it exposed but it seems every few times I pull back the bolt to load it hits the back and comes loose. No matter how hard I twist it and try to get it to stay. Please help !
Glue? We personally use our own shrouds so this inst an issue for us. See if the tabs the hold it in have broken off. Ruger might send you a need tool.
So if I find a deal on a Gen 2 I shouldn’t hesitate to buy? I doubt I’d hit more than 500 rds. I don’t want to get screwed
A deal is a deal. Take it.
Glad I stumbled across this video. I just picked up a RPR (6.5 Creedmoor) and was looking at your barrel shrouds yesterday. Might have ordered the wrong thing not really knowing the difference.
Thanks for the feedback. We will swap it out if you ordered the wrong one. Let us know.
How can I spot a gen 3.5 vs say a 3 or 2 online when buying one? Hard to tell in pictures.
You cant without taking the bolt a part.
im considering buying a gen 3 .308 with the old firing pin, should i wait to find a 3.5 or is the gen3 just fine? is it possible to swap a 3.5 bolt into a gen 3 rifle to get the upgraded firing pin?
I would seek the best deal. The changes dont really effect the rifle. It is just good to know which model you have. The bolts are all serialized and match to the rifle. You can swap them but I dont recommend it.
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial sweet, thanks for the reply
Is the TRIGGER in the "Gen. 3.5" different than the older models?
The factory trigger is not for what I can tell.
2:41 Do they separately sell that red barrier stop that is installed on the front of the magazine well anywhere?
They do not. It will not attach to the any RPR only the custom shop.
Why wouldn’t you have the bolt encapsulated by the stock as it folds around
? You mean the bolt back in the stock? Is so, it's to long to do that. It wont fold.
I wish they did not discontinue this rifle in .223. I hope they would reconsider making it in .223 again.
Its an awesome rifle. I will chat with Mark and Graham at Shot show about bringing it back.
So ...
I purchased the Gen II offered with Magpul furniture and these new parts are not compatible with my version ... as in , I have to buy a whole new rifle ??? Yes or no ...
Semper Fi
We have parts compatible for both firing pin systems.
Is gen 1 worse than later gens? Can gen 1 be upgraded to later gen parts?
Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 pre April 2021 all use the Gen 1 parts. After April 2021 the parts changed.
What is the model number of the latest rpr in 338 and 300 win mag?
The Magnums are all the same. They havent changed.
Looks super light with how he's handling it.
Its is about 16 pounds.
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial
This is 9.8 lbs in .308 in stock form.
You need to manufacture a fluted Bolt for the short action and long action no one in the world manufactures one including Ruger they will fly off the shelf. they will sell not like hotcakes but they'll sell like an individual selling $100 bills for $0.10 that's how fast it'll sell ....someone's going to do it. This is going to be a perfect example of where a person says damn why didn't I do that you could be the leader or you can be the follower if I had the money to invest I would have done it two years ago
The issue is each bolt is fitted and serialized by Ruger. The tolerance issues between rifles along is a huge issue and the price of a bolt would be around $350. We have look doing bolts serveral time but there are many things to over come.
can you replace the 3.0 with 3.5 on the 6.5 creedmoor
That I am not sure about. Knowing Ruger probably not.
it is better without bolt shroud, or a very short one
This works great.
Where exactly do I go to order the upgrades ? Thanks
Which upgrade in particular are you inquiring about?
The gen 3.5 fire control system. I have an 6mm
Is it possible to get gen 3.5 in .308? it looks like 308 is still in old gen.
As far as we know, all short action RPR's 3.08, 6mm Creedmoor, and 6.5 Creedmoor produced after April 2021 should have the latest changes.
Yes, I bought a 3.5 in .308 two months ago in California. Now it’s a 6 dasher
Would this explain why my new Timney trigger drags on the bolt?
My Gen 2 RPR work just fine without these toys. BUT I have did mods to suit me.
Good to know.
Is ruger taking care of this deal
I am not sure what the question is?
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial
So ruger made changes to the newer gen, what are they doing to fix the earlier gen problem 🤔
where can i buy a rpr 338
Online or a local shop.
The rifle that founded the company? Are you talking about your company? Ruger was making awesome rifles long before the precision rifle came out.
Our company was build on creating aftermarket parts for the Ruger precision rifle.
Sorry…I have NEVER been so confused by a video in my life!
Please expand so we can improve.
Nice can y’all get this in .338 l
The custom shop? No. The 338 has a newer design.
Black pen, black firing pin, black bolt, black rifle with a black shirt background. You need to watch your videos more closely before you post them.
We understand and are improving every day.
But yet you let thousands of these break over the years before fixing it
Yes they did.
Ruger wasnt a constitutionalist
Noted.
Mine is rpr 300 win mag and it goes boom boom not bang bang
It sure does.
Like a mini 50
So don't buy??? Why buy a gun you have to buy parts for...What does Ruger say
You dont have to buy parts but there are some nice upgrades out there.
You need to check this before you release a video it's called quality control
What part?
Just buy tikka t3
I like the CTR. But have been having fun with the Ruger Custom Shop.
I owned an RPR in 6.5 Gen II, and after 2 years sold the POS. Ruger should be ashamed of themselves for engineering such a turd of a rifle. Nothing but mechanical problems, clunky bolt and by far the most pathetic butt-stock ever engineered. Had to send it back to Ruger....2x in the two years I owned it. I bought a real rifle....a Tikka and couldn't be happier. In fact I bought two Tikkas!
Glad you found a good solution. We have 6 RPRs without issue. We also love the Tikkas!!!
You should delete this piece and start over. Confusing.
What is confusing about it?
@@AnarchyOutdoorsOfficial
t j is merely confused because all the viewer has to go one is the audio. The lack of lighting, mis-spoken nomenclature, that insidiously devious back on black IN blackness, eliminates any visual reference to the subject at hand...a re-do over is awaiting. . . .
I can redo it. I have super sick when I shot this video. It does have some great information in it.
You lost me
Marco?
Dude, get proper LIGHTENING !!!!
Black shirt, black gun parts no light. You melted it😂😂😂
