I saw him in Sweden and he sang this song as the encore singing "You don't really like this song...do you? do you? do you?" as the final refrain. Afterwards he threw his shirt into the crowd where his fans tore it apart and quite literally stuffed bits of it into their mouths to keep some. Very very odd.
I really doubt he actually hates Bowie. The man goes back and forth on his remarks throughout the years, like a normal person. He doesn't censor himself at all so he says things that he later disagrees with, and so do you. It is a perfectly reasonable conclusion to come to that David Bowie's quality of work has declined through the years, and this is coming from a devout Bowie follower.
I think he's right that Bowie lost something after Pinups. It wasn't that his music became worse, but it didn't have the romanticism of his earlier work, which I think appealed to someone like Morrissey.
The tone of the song especially the jingly overtones remind me of I Want You from Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde. Love Blonde On Blonde, Bob, this, and Bowie!
