Firth of Fifth, on the Seconds Out album, was an epiphany for me. I never imagined “rock” music could be so amazingly beautiful. Steve Hackett’s solo might be the most beautiful guitar solo in music, period.
If you were thinking Opeth, Opeth was thinking Genesis.
As much as I love this original version, I agree the Seconds Out version is mind blowing. The thunderous duel drums send a shiver through me, and yes that guitar solo! ❤
Glad to see people still enjoying the music I grew up with.
The music from British groups of the '60's, '70's and '80's is unmatched to this day. Genesis hold a place in the pantheon of great bands with their own sound and style, like Pink Floyd, or Yes, or The Who, or Jethro Tull, and on and on and on. I was lucky to be born in England in 1954 and the music was our lives.
I was born in the US in 1955 and I mainly agree, but with some exemptions.
Good choices you have here.
Steve Hackett was the king of restraint and playing the perfect note and milking every last drop of emotion from each note. I just saw him playing this a few months ago its still just as transcendant.
The guitar solo in "Firth of Fifth" is considered by many to be one of the finest in rock music, and the live version from Seconds Out is worth checking out. In fact, Seconds Out may be one of the finest live albums ever. Thank you so much for taking time to listen to Genesis!
Many bands want to create 1 masterpiece, Genesis created many. The gloryyears were amazing.
Nice reaction. This was the greatest period for Genesis. Steve Hackett does a short classical intro on "Blood On The Rooftops" which is a beautiful track from a later album when Phil Collins was doing vocals and Hackett also has a great classical outro on "Racing In A..." from his solo album. I think you'd enjoy both of them.
Genesis influenced SO many other bands. You will love continuing with this band. Their music feels so organic. The orchestral elements and jazz influences that Genesis brings carry us away on a fantastic trip. So glad you finally found this band. Their depth of music is VERY deep and a lot of gems to find. Don't miss 'Supper's Ready'! It is less 'classical' and more.....hmmm, what?

All their old stuff is Amazing The Lamb Lies Down On Broad Way is the album to do all the way threw I only discovered them about 10 years ago and they are in my top 5 bands Peace from New Orleans
Possibly one of the greatest prog masterpieces ever created.
This song, along with many of their others, has some terrific melodies. And credit the drummer; I can't imagine it's easy to come up with drumbeats to the brand of music of Genesis.
Phil Collins: "I'm a drummer who sings a bit", possibly one of the greatest understatements of all time.

At 70's prog bands were really good. Musicians were well educated and skilled. They took influences from classical, jazz, contemporary etc. Everything was very new and progressive in the proper sense of the word. Later bands took influences from them 😀. In a way its not as progressive, even if it is in the same genre.
From the same album The Cinema Show is almost as great. Originally it continued straight to The Aisle of Plenty.
This was golden. Your wonder and joy is what we all have felt with this song.

Listen again and when the guitar solo starts, don't think in musical technical terms. You just close your eyes and imagine an eagle flying high, sometimes flapping its wings to gain height and other times just hovering. It is an unforgettable experience.
Now you should watch Steve Hackett [and musicians] performing this live.

the older i get and the more reaction videos i see of people now loving the music i grew up with 50+ years ago gets me a little emotional. on the one hand i am proud of myself for liking this kind of music when i was a teenager, and on the other hand it's nice to see confirmation from people today listening and liking it. back in the early '70s it was expected to play 3 chord guitar rock. this kind of Prog-classical-orchestral stuff was poo-pooed at the time. but i knew that it was special then, and i'm glad you find it special now.

Musicianship at his best. Rutherford bass playing is very underated, especially on this piece.
The Firth of Forth is a river in Scotland.
The change to "Fifth" refers to the cercle of fifths chords progression they employ in this song.
Hey Jone, enjoy your reactions, my favorite Genesis if from the same album, "The Cinema Show". I'm sure it will make you smile. I'm checking out what you have reacted to now, but if you haven't reacted to Yes' ,"Awaken", you're in for a profound experience. I feel like I've been escorted into the throne room of God. I have many interesting avant garde suggestions as well.

Steve is a pretty good classical guitarist and clearly hugely influenced by Segovia.
The title is a pun about the River Forth in Scotland, known as the Firth of Forth.
I think you underestimate his classical skills a bit there - he is an extremely skilled classical guitarist.

A firth is an estuary in Scottish. There is a River Forth in Scotland. It is a subtle joke that the Genesis imaginary river is the non-existent River Fifth. We travel down this river and see life flowing. The river ends at the firth and into the sea, just as we see life flowing to the end. A metaphor.
This was such a joy to watch!

For some reason ive always assumed that the fifth mentioned in the title refers to a musical interval, the most essential musical interval 5 steps in a scale, or seven semitones.
GREAT reaction Jone! My introduction to this album was through the first song, Dance With The Moonlit Knight (which is spectacular if you haven't heard it!), then I got the album, and I had to pick up jaw up off the floor after hearing this song! Such a beautiful, melodic composition - this is truly when I became a Genesis fan (as far as the older, progressive era - with Peter Gabriel).
HIGHLY recommend checking the live version from Steve Hackett, from 2013, at the Royal Festival Hall - it's, for me, one of the ultimate versions (as it has accompanying orchestra!)

I grew up with bands like Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Camel, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Gentle Giant.
Most modern bands don’t even come close to this quality.
Exceptions are: Haken, IQ, Riverside, Ayreon, Nightwish, Flower Kings, Pineapple Thief, Porcupine tree.

Tony Banks shines!
Selling England By The Pound, on which Firth of Fifth appears, was released in 1973. The album is a prog rock classic. Many would argue Firth of Fifth is the best track on it (and indeed the best Genesis song) however the remainder of the album is pretty much as good from start to finish apart from one mercifully short Phil Collins pop song in the middle. Cinema Show is generally considered the other truly great track on this record. The other two classic Genesis records are Foxtrot (1972) and The Trick of the Tail (1976) which are almost as good as Selling England By The Pound.
There is also an especially excellent live album called Seconds Out recorded in Paris released in 1977 which features most of best songs from all three of the aforementioned three studio albums played to an astonishingly high standard of musicianship for a rock band. In particular side 4 (or the second half of CD2) consists of Cinema Show (from Selling England by the Pound), Dancing on a Volcano and Los Endos (both from Trick of the Tail) with which they ended their show for the 1976/7 tour. This finale to the show absolutely stunned audiences across the globe, blew their minds basically, and turned Genesis into a major international band. it's still stunning to listen to it today. Seconds Out is worth getting for this monstrous 25m finale alone.
Steve Hackett's current band played the Selling England album live a couple of years back. They're such a good band now. One thing I love about that show is how much better More Fool Me, The Battle of Epping Forest and After the Ordeal are live. The whole thing is amazing. If you haven't already, track down the DVD/Blue Ray.

Firth is a word in the English and Scots languages used to denote various coastal waters in the United Kingdom, predominantly within Scotland. In the Northern Isles, it more often refers to a smaller inlet.
the Firth Of Forth is a well known Firth in Scotland. There is a well known bidge that spans the Forth - The Forth Bridge - which culminates in a well known British saying about a never ending job being like painting the Forth bridge, once finished, you start again immediately, so never really complete it
Try Blood on the Roof Top from the Wind And Wuthering album. You'll love the guitar work.

I love the Phil Collins Genesis, but they were a completely different band from the Peter Gabriel Genesis musically. My preference is this version that produced such beautiful songs such as this. BTW, The title is a pun on the Firth of Forth, the estuary of the River Forth in Scotland. The song theme relates to the "river of constant change" thus the constant time signatures changes.
These guys were 23 when they created this.

The old recordings are reminding very much to the music from Mike Oldfield......
When they played this liove, they often skipped the piano intro if they didn't have access to a proper, well-tuned grans piano. They thought that the electric pianos or available synthesizers couldn't match the Steinway they used in the studio, and which they felt it needed.
Interesting and kind of sad if i were to go to see the whole thing. I think the piano part is special!
I love how at the end of all of that, you get an amazing lyrical stanza to cap it off "The sands of time were eroded by the river of constant change." Geez..not bad for a bunch of 23 year old young men huh?
Great song, one of the best from the old Genesis, though I could have done without the superstitious BS at the end of the video. Firth is a Scottish word meaning inlet or strait, most notably the Firth of Forth. The title of this song is a play on that name.
