- Ever been told that you have injured a 'cartilage pad' inside your knee? Or maybe that you need surgery to trim away some 'loose cartilage' within your knee joint? In this situation you've probably sustained a meniscal tear. Whilst knee ligaments seem to get all of the attention in the media, the meniscus is the true unsung hero of your knee joint! In this video, find out exactly what a meniscus does inside your knee joint, and what the best treatment is for your meniscal tear. The treatment varies hugely based on your age and the type of meniscal tear you have....
Dr Matthew Hutchinson is an orthopaedic surgeon based in Adelaide, South Australia. He has a special interest in minimally-invasive knee surgery, especially the treatment of meniscal tears in both adults and growing athletes. Dr Hutchinson treats some of the best athletes in Australia, in the AFL, AFLW, SANFL, NBL and Superleague Netball. He offers the same very high level of treatment to weekend warriors, emerging junior athletes and everyday patients.
I've had 5 knee surgeries over my 64 years. I am now considering BILATERAL KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY.... BE KIND AND GOOD TO YOURSELVES....
I'm 80 years old and have a meniscal tear. I've been advised that arthroscopic surgery might be needed.
This videos has helped me to understand what the surgery is all about. Really informative videos
This is the most interesting and informative video I have seen on this topic. I have surgery Wednesday and I feel more comfortable now. Thanks doc!
thanks for that explanation, the most clear I have heard so far
Excellent video!
You basically summed up everything I heard in like 5-10 other videos combined. Great job :)
I'm 36 and have a meniscus tear. It happened like 5 months ago. Had an MRI scan too. I have barely any problems in my day to day life but it limits my mobility executing my sport. I'm really scared about what's going to happen to my knee in the future and I'm sure either way I'll regret that I didn't get multiple opinions. As of right now I basically rely on my own research.
I wish everyone else here a quick recovery and a long life :)
This is the same problem I have now, this has happened To me since May 14/2023and up to now, I'm still feeling pain.
For few times when I tried to do my constant self-training on the ball and off the ball, when I was training on the ball that day after my self-trainer passed me the ball like trying to track the ball, I immediately felt real pain inside my right knee, and I stop the training.
To be frank, something, I will be alone crying by myself that I have failed to accomplish my dream of becoming the best player in the world because looking at reality, who is going to help? Or which of the teams in the world would like to accept me in such a situation, as we all know, football goes by age. As soon you are older, there is no team that will sign you, looking at my age 16 years with such great problem, however, God who does everything, and he knows what is better for me, others can't talk, can't see, can't walk, and can't wake up, so like if I'm doing all these, all praise be to him. Perhaps maybe soccer is not a good support for me looking at such an issue.
Like something, I really feel different, like seeing my friends playing while we all used to play together, and yet, I'm not among them. This makes me cry as well.
I hope 🙏 my knee will be better, I pray.
I’m on the same boat. Apparently I have a meniscus tear on my inner right knee. Got it in an accident when someone tboned my car on the driver side. Knee jerked all over the place and tore it. It locks my knee at less than 45 degrees. Getting physical therapy to see if it helps. Last thing I want is surgery. Not sure if I’ll ever be the same if I don’t get it done. Wish you luck.
@@erikgomez5098 gl to you! I have lost 50 pounds in the last 3 months and worked really hard to get fit again. I do daily exercises to help get better knee mobility and it's paying off. Like 2 months ago I would have never thought to make this kind of progress without surgery but it's possible. Obviously it depends on the case but I would recommend physio therapy first and see how much quality of life you can get back.
I wish you a fast recovery and best of luck to get back to where you were. Keep us updated :)
@@AbuBility-yp7sx You're 16? From my research that seems to be great age to get surgery. Blood flow is still great at that young age and it will likely heal well. Consult some doctors in your areas and get opinions. At that young age surgery is a great option as you got your whole life ahead of you :)
Guys don't waste time go get the meniscus repair done ASAP
I had meniscus tear which wasn't bothering much last week feel pain and it got worst been to my surgeon done arthroscopy now iam having grade 3 arthritis its a nightmare as I love to walk and do hiking
So don't wait for it and go get it done
Menisectomy has a very poor outcome for the patient ... but very good for the surgeon's bank balance
This is simply just incorrect and ignorant on your part
@@calmerthoughts I've had the treatment (and spoken with people who have had the treatment), its unfortunetely true. You are a dummy who has never had the treatment
Last option is to have it shaved. New procedures are having success such as the NovoStitch even on older patients.
Try EVERYTHING else first!
@@PatrickClarkUW86 All these treatments sound good at the time. Partial menisetomy was all the rage when I had my treatment, it was a disaster for me and many other. A few year ago articular cartlidge repair was touted by surgeons however this was just another fad, as NovoStitch will be after it has proven to have done a lot of damage and made a lot of surgeons rich
Thank you for this amazing video very clear and thourough, anyone can understand it even without medical background.
Doc where have you been all my life this video hit the nail on the head...💯💥🤛🏾
Doc thank you so much! I live in Singapore and I'm a chef. I actually just had a mri yesterday. Medial meniscus tear cartilage tear opposite arthritis baker's cyst! Man I'm all jacked up. They gave me 2 options physio or arthroscopic surgery! I'm 51 I'm really scared. I was just getting back into shape.I've searched videos on your RUclips this the first one that actually answers my questions! Thank you
From Chef Carl
I got knee swell n lateral pain over the years after over use my knee. Went to orthopedic doctor, and done MRI scan. Required Arthroscopy invasive surgery to either repair or remove my damaged meniscus. I'm still keeping my option to whether do the ops or just carry on with my knee, unless too painful n affect my daily life n work
I'm 54 this year...
I hve the exact n had surgery last year on my hip n I don’t want v surgery!! I pray we cn both feel better n still walk!
Great video, so much appreciated everything you have explained so plainly, we have much more clarity now 🙏🏼☺️👍🏼 all the best in your business 👏🏼
Great video, now I know in which direction I need to go as far as treatment is concerned. Thank you, Doctor Hutchinson.
Information was thorough. Best explanation I have heard
Best knee video I have seen . Well done mate very helpful
So you have an x-ray on screen rather than an MRI.
WHY?
Thanks for this excellent video. Very detailed yet understandable! 🙏🏽
I am about to have my second menisectomy in 18 months (different knees). My first menisectomy should have been a (left) knee replacement. I will eventually have to have both knees replaced because I have degenerative arthritis. From my experience, menisectomies are band-aids. After my first menisectomy (left knee) I wished the doctor had just done a knee replacement. Different doctor this time, so I am hoping for better results. My meniscus tear in my right knee doesn't seem as bad and I do not have bone on bone like I do my left knee. hank you for your explanation. I have read a lot, talked to a few orthopedic surgeons, CRPs, PAs, and read/watch a lot of information on the meniscus. This is the most precise and easy to understand of anything I have come across. Thank you for your post.
May I know your age, if you don't mind sharing?
Very well explained. Thank you.
Very helpful information, thanks.
Great information thank you. I had a bad meniscus tear and moderate arthritis. Had my knee scoped 3years ago and it did help a lot, but will need a knee replacement before too long.
Very comprehensive information, thank you. Do you do long distance consultations, Dr Hutchinson?
Thank you for this helpful information.
Excellent video. I have been diagnosed with medial meniscus tear in both my knees. For now, I am on medication to reduce the swelling and pain. I hear lot of clicking sounds through the day. Hoping to recover from all this without needing surgery/PRP injections.
How are you now? I got medial meniscus tear as well. On mybleft knee
I'm in the same boat. 33 years old
How are you now?
And what you done for this problem
To those who are asking me how I am doing now - I am doing fine. Haven't received any PRP treatment nor thinking of going for it. Surgery has never been an option as I wanted to heal it by doing strength training. As of now, doing ankle weights once a week mostly, dumbbell exercises twice a week and yoga (leg strengthening). I am able to walk long distances, go for brisk walk for more than 30 mins, do little indoor jogging and sit down/up, do malasan. Infact, I am feeling more confident now than ever. Strengthening the quads, hips, ankles is working for me.
How are you feeling now?
Great information on my future treatment in the next weeks. Thank you from Texas!
Thank u sir from Nigeria. I believe I have this kind of injury two years ago hope mine can still be repaired
Excellent description of what goes on in the knee. The spongy covering at the ends of bone is not even mentioned in the 5 or so videos I have seen so far.
I learn alot..was having a knee athroscopy on the 9 May 2024..
Excellent video...
The human body is an amazing machine
Why do so many abuse it?
Doc, that was super informative. The recommendations were quite genuine.
Hmmm interesting that a menisectomy does not increase chances of arthritis. Surely "less" shock absorption is what can accelerate arthritis, so having meniscus that is damaged but is asymtomatic is better than removal of it??
This is a fantastic video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Dr. Matthew, thank you for your advice on degenerative minuscus.
This is an excellent video.
Very thorough. Thank you from the other side of the world in Maryland USA.
Very well explained
Hello sir .I am from Nepal ,and i am medical student. I had a meniscus and Acl tear one years back .but after one years i had surgery of Acl and meniscus but during Arthroscopic surgery of my knee meniscus was already healed
Kindly share ur mail id, my self suffering from acl and meniscus tear grade 2
Thanks Dr. that was excellent explanation much appreciated.
To be honest.. This is very important informative vedio about meniscus problems...
Thanks so much you explained the best I have seen! And better than my surgeon
I’m headed to meniscus surgery right now. My second in two years but different parts of the meniscus.
That's a great video and real good and understandable information! 👍👍
My knee surgery healing is in direct contrast to this video. My knee swelled up 2 days after the surgery and the pain has been horrible ever since. I can't walk, sleep, lay, elevate my leg. The pain is too great and the swelling is above my knee going into my quad.
I had same pain after athroscopy.yp7 have to move your leg and do physio strifht away after 2 or 3 days after surgery or your muscles will tighten up and cause horrendous pain
Fantastic video. Thanks.
Yeah I’m almost 59 then all of a sudden my left knee started popping and hurting so I went in emergency, they took an X-ray then said I had arthritis and gave me a referral to a orthopedic doctor
So before I got there my other knee swelled up and started hurting so when I seen the orthopedic dr he said I had to see my personal physician first…it sucks, I hope they can fix me before I retire
Thank you so much. Very informative.
Surgery in 5 days for medial tear video helped with understanding thanks Doc
A very comprehensive video thank you
what about stem cells for regenerating the meniscus?
Extremely informative vid after searching the net for a few days now...while on wait list for professional help
Thank u sir very well explained
Wonderful information! Thank you(now, I just wish that I lived in South Australia)
Please tell me physio therapy can maniscus healing with out surgery please tell me
Solid! Thank you! ❤
I may have the degenerative meniscal tare. I will be seeing my doctor soon and have already got an MRI scheduled. Hope it’s not knee replacement time.
Thanks a lot for this very informative video. I j had arthroscopy repair of medial meniscus tear three weeks back.
This was very informative! I’m currently recovering from a partial meniscus scope. I was curious about what the procedure looked like. Thanks for posting this.
Yes ACL and meniscus very bad
But now I am ok after surgery
Ma'am u got ACL and meniscus same here but back to sports
May I ask how long did your recovery take
@@sibongakonkezuke8457 After the first week I was walking 30 minutes twice a day. By the fourth week I was back at the gym no jumping or squats or running till 6-8 weeks.
Excellent video very helpful
Excellent information thank you
Great information. Been a month and still waiting to see public health surgeon ( first appointment) in Australia despite MRI showing acute tear. Private healthcare no better as my insurance is cash and claim ( not cashless) through a global company. Sad state of affairs!
Had left lateral bucket tear of the meniscus arthroscopy to repair it in 2009 hen in 2013 i had another arthroscopy because knee was still giving way with more trimming and a debridement have been fine for many years but fell in 2022 since then have had white hot pain in middle of knee and pain on bone either side on shin also pain on left side of knee also on right side this is for over year of pain on walking and now cant do very much would you have recommended mri.
I am older, but, I definitely injured my knee so it was acute. X-ray shows no fracture of significant arthritis. MRI shows complex radial medial tear, Baker's cyst. loose bodies, tissue edema & a bone bruise. This did not happen over time, and I knew exactly how it happened. I have a brace, compression hose.walker & have started PT. My Ortho will try a cortisone shot soon. I am 13 wks out and still have a lot of pain. Surgery will probably happen as I have been having my knee lock up, and, I have had a episode of stabbing pain for 3 hrs. Feels like there is no solution to this nightmare.
Shot temp fix
@@michaelbabin1467 I did have a partial meniscectomy 6 mos. after the injury.
Very informative thankyou xo
I've had 3 meniscectomies, 2 on the left 1 on the right...the first 2 weren't that bad surgery wise but geez #3 recovery was a struggle...
I am on number 4 now.. 3 on my right and just had my first on my left.
@@danwatson49 can you explain why you guys are having so many meniscus tears? Sports or just autoimmune? I have had multiple injuries as well. I feel like it could be I’m obese 240lbs I’m really scared tho because I’m young and don’t want to limb my whole life… should I just get a partial meniscectomy?
THANK YOU DOCTOR HUTCHINSON!
THESE QUESTIONS GO OUT TO ANYONE WHO CAN ANSWER THESE AND I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SPEEDY AND GOOD RECOVERY.
10 weeks after your meniscectomy were you able to bend your leg all the way back as far as your right leg bends back? Or are you only able to bend it about 90°? And on bending it about 90° did you feel pressure in the knee? Did you still have some swelling of the knee? Were you easily able to walk up and down steps or did you still have a limited range that made it difficult?
I am in my mid 60s and had a partial medial bucket handle meniscectomy. My surgeon showed me the pics. There's no wear or damage to my cartilage. He showed how smooth and undamaged it is. And I was walking around with the bucket handle meniscus tear for 5 months until the surgery! And my job is a physical one. I'm just very lucky.
This is my situation. I'm trying to get an idea of all of this through searching online different resources.
I'm going through PT now.
I'm 64yrs old
8weeks with bucket handle meniscus tear on lateral side
Not sure if I must do arthroscopic menistectomy as Dr advised
Im not in pain
But walking with more pressure on left leg. Just scared to put pressure on right one.
@@fazeelalaher6250 Yes. Unfortunately it has to be done. I guess the doctor explained to you what a bucket handle meniscus tear is?
It will flop around sometimes and jam your knee and restrict knee bending range. It has to be done. It can't be left like that.
And my personal suspicion is by leaving it like that the meniscus might tear even more.
I'm a little over 6 months with my bucket handle partial meniscectomy
And I can almost bend my knee all the way back to heal-near-rear-end. About 5 more inches to go.
After surgery make sure you check out RUclips videos on how to begin "softening up" the scar tissue (after the incisions are completely healed) because that's what is restricting range of motion. But the immediate swelling from the trauma of the incisions will restrict your range of motion also.
But start on that scar tissue as soon as your doctor recommends.
Everybody's healing time towards a complete or almost complete range of motion is different.
To anybody, if anything I said here is incorrect or partially incorrect, please correct it.
I'm just going on what I've been reading and my own experience.
I know this is an old video.
But thanks dr. Very well done and very informative!
61yr old with a complex medial tear , lots of pain for several months
Now clicking grinding. Steps and squatting ughh!
Arthritis too .
There was other stuff too. Just keeping it short.
Now I have some insight on next steps.
Thanks
My knee hurts by just watching this
I'll be having one after Christmas surgery
Thanks for the info
I understand better thank you
Great video 😊
Very informative video🤍
I had, 2 weeks ago, a posterior horn medial meniscus vertical root teat, is it the same you mean by meniscal tear? I am 65.
Hello Dr. Hutchinson. I am a 59 year old female. I was told that I have a torn meniscus in my left knee, I have clicking and locking in my knee. So far I've done physical therapy and had gel shots done recently. My doctor has not talked tp me about surgery at all, which I hope is a good thing. What would your diagnosis be for me from what I've explained to you?
hi... I think we have the same issue... how are you now btw? are you able to walk?
Thank u very much
Wow what a video, thanks Doc,I'm having surgery this tuesday

Hello! Thank you so much for this video! Very informative because I recently got news of a meniscus tear. It says I have oblique posterior horn tear of the medial meniscus. How do I know if It’s in the red or white zone in terms of healing on its own without surgery? The reporter of the MRI also didn’t put the dimensions of the tear that I can see on my report.
I have had a meniscectomy. I can guarantee, having had it, that you don't want it. Meniscectomy is a "gift" that just keeps on giving ... constant pain, dysfunction, arthritis in the knee, hip and foot, depression, inability to work. The only thing healthy after a meniscectomy is the knee surgeons bank balance
Have you been able to find therapies and/or activities you are able to do that make you feel better? In June I had an MRI that shows what the surgeon said is a large flap tear in the medial meniscus in my left knee. I have been researching surgery while I have recently started PT and had a PRP injection a month ago. I’m 50 and was very active prior to the diagnosis. I lifted weights and would hike. I can understand what you mean about it being beneficial to the surgeon’s bank balance. The surgeon couldn’t wait to get me out of his office once I told him I won’t be getting surgery right now. Talking with him was like talking to a used car salesman. Telling me that I better get surgery or it’s going to get worse and if I don’t get surgery now then not to come to him when I’m 55 and in pain. I haven’t done any kind of impactful activity since the diagnosis. PT is painful but I’m hoping it provides some relief. I’m curious to know what you’ve found to provide you with relief.

10weeks waiting time in NZ healthcare for me to even book an MRI let alone get one and talk about surgery what a joke
Yes nz healthcare is outrageous
That’s a shame! I always admired the NHS and Canada’s healthcare, which I assume is similar to Australia and NZ.
If it isn’t the cost in the US it’s the delays in the UK and former colonies. Somehow, someday surely we will all receive the healthcare we need in a timely manner.
