    My favourite "not so popular" npc off all time is definitely the Iron Forge Guard that walks behind the mountain. That dude has mithril balls, seriously. he wears a full plate armor and WALKS his way to the top of the mountain every single day. Like, seriously, screw gravity. You could think, "Well, who the fuck is going to attack the city from behind?" Who cares! The guy is there, doing his job like a champ, watching for danger and keeping his kingdom safe. Does he ask for help? For recognition? For a beer? Nope.
    And for that, i always /salute him every time i fly over there. Bless his beard.
    (also, sorry for my shitty english, cool video by the way)

    Nixxiom Machinima - You forgot one of my favorite quest chains. In Icecrown, tucked in the corner in the mountains, you find a dying soldier named Crusader Bridenbrad. His quest chain takes you around the entire world in an attempt to save him from the Plague of Undeath. Tirion sends you to Keeper Remulous, Alexstraza, and even A'dal in Shattrah City in an attempt to save him. In the end he passes away, but the quest chain actually put a tear in my eye at how hard you wanted to have this all succeed. The catcher is Bridenbrad is actually based off a real life person, and suffered from an illness that eventually took his life. Bradford C. Bridenbecker was a WoW player and brother to the VP of Online Technologies at Blizzard. His brother sent an email to Chris Metzen, and after discussion, decided to give him his own epic quest chain in the then upcoming expansion, The Wrath of the Lich King. Bradford passed away on 6/18/2007 due to his illness, and the quest chain remembers that battle. Maybe you can do another Top 10 list, and if so... put him up high in the ranking for me! :)

    Regarding Gunther Aracanus and the potential for a "Necromancer" class:
    I worked at Blizzard as a GM in the years before Wrath launched. A select few of my superiors were invited to a meeting regarding the potential future of World of Warcraft, and one of the things that was discussed was new classes that were going to be introduced. Before Wrath was announced, according to my good friend and immediate superior who was at the meeting, they had three ideas for new classes. These classes were Deathknight, inspired by the death knights from the Warcraft II Horde campaign; Runemaster, inspired by the class from the Warcraft pen and paper RPG, and Necromancer, inspired by Kel'Thuzad from Warcraft III. The details I was able to squeeze out of my superior regarding the three classes was that the Deathknight was a plate wearing damage dealer, the Runemaster was a mail wearing DPS that used a new resource called Runes that he applied to his weapon to change what kind of damage he dealt, and that the Necromancer was a cloth wearing DPS who summoned undead pets such as skeletons, zombies, and ghouls to do his damage for him.
    I was super excited for the announcement of Wrath, expecting three new classes to be announced, and was quite taken aback and surprised when only the Deathknight was. Looking back in hindsight, I can see that while they had three great /ideas/ for classes, the actual /mechanics/ of how those classes would have worked weren't fully fleshed out at all. In the end, they dropped all three ideas in a blender and came out with one class that wore plate, used runes on it's weapons, and summoned undead pets.

    • @Whielling
      @Whielling 9 лет назад +14

      The necromancer as a healer would be pretty cool, having a healing class that uses the unholy force to heal instead of a holy or nature force.

    • @Whielling
      @Whielling 9 лет назад +12

      Blood magic, the same way drathknights heal themselves but to heal others

    • @GrimlanderMG
      @GrimlanderMG 9 лет назад +1

      I had heard that the final two ideas for inclusion were the deathknight and runemaster, so the necromancer seems to have been the first one of the three to be cut. I'll admit it would have been kind of weird to party with a necromancer. In-universe, we're fighting against the undead, why would we be journeying with someone who summoned them? It would be the warlock issue all over again. They had the same issue with the DK but they handled it fairly well. All three ideas sounded cool, but I like the way the development team went with their decisions.

    • @BRO56002
      @BRO56002 9 лет назад

      Alexander Findley They coulda just done the same thing that they did with dk's with the necromancers. Worked for the lich king, got betrayed by the lich king, ally with their respective faction to help kill the lich king etc

    Rhea from the Badlands questline. I think she's a really important npc considering she was the one that "liberated" Wrathion while he was just an egg. Some npcs that always made me laugh were the dwarfs that would say "I'm gonna punch that dragon in the face!" and Zen'kiki in the Plaguelands.

      THANK YOU. Zen'kiki is the greatest druid known to man. After all, he can cast Moonfire faster than even a player with the highest possible haste.... even if he only ever manages to hit himself. Here's hoping he learns to aim, so he can single-handedly decide the outcome of the war. I'm convinced he is the Druid equivalent of Thrall when it comes to power, we just have to teach him to aim.

    You missed Kingslayer Orkus. D:
    First introduced in the first quest of HIllsbrad Foothills where you hilariously become a questgiver NPC, Orkus is an orc warrior and one of the NPCs who enter HIllsbrad Foothills to accept a quest from you. He's massively overlevelled, completely full of himself and constantly going on about his achievements. He's basically that level 100 douche who hangs around in Tirisfal Glades or Goldshire to annoy new players.
    You meet him again a little later in the water. He thinks he's drowning, but it turns out he's just standing in the shallows. He found some alliance guys and tried to spy on them, but they kicked his ass and nearly killed his undead dragon mount Kasha. Eventually you save Kasha and Orkus tells you that there's this island called Purgation where the Alliance are gathering, as well as some of their high ranking commanders. Now obsessed with the idea that you could both be heroes of the horde, you and Orkus fly to Purgation and single handedly fight your way to the commanders, at which point Orkus engages the enemy to distract the alliance leaders so that you can steal some enemy intelligence and escape to take it back to High Warlord Cromush. Though Orkus originally tells his mount Kasha to get you off the island, Kasha turns around and saves Orkus at the last second.
    Unfortunately on the journey back, it's revealed that Orkus was mortally wounded and he dies during the flight. His last wish is that you look after Kasha and get her a good home.
    Eventually you land and High Warlord Cromush posthumously names him Hero of the Horde and reveals the intelligence you both saved wasn't just any old intelligence, but contained the entire alliance battle plan for Hillsbrad Foothills. You're rewarded greatly and Kingslayer Orkus is named a Hero of the Horde after his death. :(
    Kasha disappears after the quest ends. I don't know if you ever see her again though. I assume not. Sad. :(

    I love Dumass from the 'Welcome To The Machine' questline. It's always bugged me that you never find out where he winds up, or what ultimate chaos he very likely caused. I wish he were a garrison follower. He could go on missions to kill things and instead of bringing back gold or oil, you could get completely bizarre and unrelated junk items.

  • @TheCrazer666
    @TheCrazer666 9 лет назад +15

    My most memorable character is also one most people don't really know about: Captain Malin. She's only featured in one quest, and in it, the player kills her, thinking he's killing an evil Blue Dragon. However, once you kill her, she drops this letter:
    "Father,
    I'm sorry for disappearing on you. If you're reading this letter, then I'm dead.
    I've been forced to work for Malygos's armies under threat that our family would be killed if I didn't. I feel so ashamed.
    If there's anything that you can do to fight them, don't worry about me. I have them fooled and I'm sabotaging them from the inside.
    I love you, Daddy!
    Em"
    I've never, ever felt so bad about killing a pile of pixels.

    Hey Nixxiom! I just wanted to stop by and give a big thanks for mentioning Captain Placeholder and his Lament at number 2 on your list. I saw the article this video was posted in on Kotaku and I felt the need to drop by and say a few words. I am the original writer and preformer of the song 'The Lament of Captain Placeholder' and it really makes me feel great to see this tune still popping up years after it was penned. Even greater was the interest that Cranius put into the song and covering it which brought it to an even larger audience. I never thought that my little ditty 'bout an NPC would explode with such acceptance and enthusiasm in the community. It's because of people like you that it's still in circulation and I seriously get a big fat grin on my face every time I dip back to the youtube videos to see people still posting on them about their enjoyment of the tune and how they miss the dear Captain. Thanks again Nixxiom for keeping the dream alive. Long live Placeholder!!

    Oh yes! I'm so happy to see Maximillian of Northshire here! :D I also discovered him by coincidence, and I'm glad I did, cause he was freaking hilarious. Seeing him here reminded me of three others I absolutely love - I think their names were Theldurin the Lost, Lucien Tosselwrench and Martek the Exiled, the three guys in Badlands telling each their own story of how they fought Deathwing. Probably my favorite quests ever! :D

    Dar'khan is actually even better than that.
    He is the end boss for the quest chain in ghostlands and after that you become hero of the sin'dorei.
    Also, he appears as the main antagonist in the manga trilogy: the sunwell(by Richard A Knaack and Jae Hwan Kim or something).
    I found his story particulary well written.

      Jarod Shadowsong is a character that is so woefully underused. They had a chance to use him more in hyjal/cata conflict, but just didn't really do anything with him. It's a shame because I thought he was a great character with a lot of potential. He had so much humility, a quality that the heavy hitting lore characters usually seem to lack.

    I think I recognized 8 of them.
    And also, I have two characters that aren't too known, Zen'Kiki, it's a Troll Druid in WPL, he's basicly Jar-Jar Binks, he sucks at being a Druid, not only does he moonfire himself, he was also able to transfom to Aquatic form while on land, even though he's useless, he's quite funny.
    And my second NPC that not many know of is located on Draenor, to the south of Sattrath, on a small island, there's a magic lamp on the island, and when you click it, a djinn appears, named Robin the Entertainer, whom is supposed to represent Robin Williams's role as the Djinn in Aladdin.

    If you've leveled up a worgen you're probably familiar with Lord Darius Crowley, a worgen who gives out a few quests and is part of the Gilneas lore. He's a total badass and looks awesome!
    But what you may not know about him is that he was voiced by David Thewlis, who played Remus Lupin (a werewolf in case you didn't know) in Harry Potter. This makes my nerd heart happy because he's my favorite HP character. Crowley is probably one of my favorite NPCs in the game because of this.

    My favorite is Joanna Blueheart in the Swamp of Sorrows. Her story is she survived the very first orc attacks in the first war, losing her parents in the process. She appears as a quest giver in Cata leading the Alliance assault on Stonard. All throughout howver she keeps reminding you that it isn't about revenge. She won't let herself or her forces to become mindless butchers slaughtering every Horde they come across. She embodies everything it means to be Alliance, stalwart, dutiful but resrtained. I hope she appears in a more prominet role in the future.

Leads the Crushridge, used to be a mindslave to Sylvanas, and then finds an Elven crown & breaks free from her control only to take his clan to fight the Syndicate and take over the ruins of Alterac city. Plus he got an appearance in Warcraft 3.

Introduced in Legion, during the Azsuna questline, he goes from an arcane junkie to trying his best to assist you when going against the rest of his fellow Nightfallen, and is not even given the relief of death in the end, but ends up having to say a bitter goodbye to us, his friend who trusted him and gave him a chance to do something with his remaining time, before his Nightfallen thirst took completely over his mind, putting him into a zombie-like state.

    Actually, in Karasang wilds is another touching story concerning search for fountain of life. If you play horde character, you come across a tauren paladin named Sunwalker Dezco, whos wife is about to give birt to their twin children, but is in bad condition. He sends you to search for fountain of life to save her, but despite all the effort, she dies. Fortunatelly the children were saved. I really did not expected such story, it was sad.

    John J. Keeshan. I really like this NPC. Because he reminds me of our Vietnam war veterans. He fought in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd war. His wife was murdered by Blackrock Orcs and started wearing her pendant after her death. He was an orc P.O.W. for five years. He was rescued. But, he did not receive a hero's welcome. The citizens of Lakeshire spat on him, protested him and called him a baby orc killer. He may not have Lakeshire's respect. But, he sure has mine.
    Another favorite of mine is Admiral Taylor.
    That's all I have for now. Thanks for making awesome videos.

Gubber Blump, who was more than happy to tell me how many different dishes of fish I could cook. Then once BC broke and I realised my true calling with the power of the Horde I flew into Thrallmar only to be graciously housed by the Comfortably Numb legend Floyd Pinkus. For some reason I just find it so endearingly optimistic that the first thing a Warcraft goblin does in any situation is "okay, I'm gonna profit from this". I have three favorites who I don't really remember the name of, but I know the quest takes place in Eastern Kingdom. You are a questgiver yourself, and three NPC's come to get the quest... one is an orc who says he's the strongest and then fails badly on his quest, demanding you to help him, another is a male bloodelf with a sparkly horse (which later gets killed) and gets called a "little girl" of a forsaken met later on, and the third one is a forsaken who does the opposite of what you says... I found that questing line hilarious.

    I completely agree concerning the Necromancer class. I always wanted to see it implemented at some point. A small, but honorable mention that did not make your list is an npc in Brill called William Saldean. Zen'kiki is my religion. For those who don't know, this Druid in the Western Plaguelands goes with you for a few quests in the area. He is just _terrible_ at everything. His potential contributions to combat include shapeshifting into his cat form and daintily pouncing around the general vicinity without ever managing to actually hit a target, shapeshifting into bear form with his back to the enemy and swiping furiously at nothing, shapeshifting into Boomkin and after a short charge time spamming Moonfire on himself faster than even a max level druid with max haste could cast, and accidentally shapeshifting into a manatee and getting stuck on his back. He also makes appears in the druid class hall as a personal attendant, which is where people are more likely to recognize him from.

    It's worth mentioning, because some believe the Scourge had a monopoly on necromancy... According to (technically outdated) lore, necromancers are like Warlocks in that, while technically illegal, both sides have necromancers within their ranks. If they ever DID get added, I would expect them to be reliant on buffing and debuffing, much like how locks used to play. Simultaniously, I think that instead of the minions of the DK, they would need more of an emphisis on temporary pets, possibly even raising fallen enemies in desperation. That's about all I can think on to make it work, we don't really have a good, fitting example.

    Not sure how relevant my suggestion will be but I think Shomi could be added into this list as a honorable mention. Shomi is the daughter of the village blacksmith in Zouchin Province in Kun Lai Summit. She wants to be a fighter but her father wants her to learn to serve tea and be a lady. By the end of the storyline, Shomi does become the village's best fighter and becomes incharge of training the fellow villagers to fend for themselves and her father, whom at first was against it, now looks above with pride. A nice little story imo.

    I have to agree with most of those, but I'll bring my own number one to the list : Caylee Dak, a huntress in Shattrah. She's actually a player's character that got implemented in the game after he died from leukemia. To this day, she still wears the exact same stuff he was the day he died.

The job involves spotting objects in the water that might be dangerous to the ship. And also other ships in the area and their heading. + helping with navigational signs in tight waterways.

    My personal favorite was Crusader Bridenbrad in Icecrown. His quest chain is very interesting and ends in a somewhat tragic, but relieving way. I'm not a sensitive guy at all, but that quest line made me get a tear out of my eyes.

    I went to do the quest of Maximilian just for the shield and I ended up more happy about finding out about this toon than of getting the shield lol. What an awesome quest.

    Another great list Nix!
    Keristrasza hit me hard when I figured out what happened back in wrath. Ran the dungeon, didn't think twice of it until she dropped her 'broken heart.' You only covered the surface of the story, a lot of Implied rape and torture, gruesome for WoW's standards.
    Another great npc that I loved/hated was Mor'Ladim. That hellion would kill level 50s if they weren't careful. His story is depressing, even more so when Blizz nerfed him and his quest hard in Cata. It used to be hidden and very difficult to figure out.

      Well, a handful of things behind the scenes of WoW is gruesome, and goes into the holy-shit-don't-put-this-in-the-game-unless-we-want-an-M-rating.

    No Edvin/Vanessa Vancleef? Those are one of my favourite stories in Warcraft.

    The funny thing about Maximilian is no matter what you do in Un'goro's Crater you can hear him talking about slaying "dragons" and rescuing the damsel in distress.
    One NPC people might or might not know (I don't remember his name just what he does) is the guy, or unguy since he IS Forsaken, that mistaken the blonde Blood Elf for a girl and thinks "she" needs to be rescued. lol I Iove that storyline.

    Their is a dragon npc in blast lands that replaces the last purified black dragon egg with One of her own and then sacrifices it and her to protect the black egg from death wing in which after completing the quest you get her very last egg as a reward, which will let you summon her baby to help protect you in battle.

    One of my favorite obscure NPC's would have have to be Stormcaller Mylra. She has a small chain of quests in Deepholm that build up to you interrogating a Twilight's Hammer member by dangling him over an airship propeller. She gives no fucks and it's great.

    The three "npcs" from Hillsbrad (Horde) ?
    Xou become a Quest giver. 1. NPC is a Male Bloodelf that everyone thinks is female with Heirlooms. 2. NPC is a totalnoob and 3. NPC is a max level Warrior with a flying mount.
    This questline is so extremly funny... later on you find all 3 during the quests you gave them
