I've been coaching gymnastics for 28 years and watched hundreds of videos. This is the first video I've seen of your channel and it's the best back twisting video I've ever seen. Thanks very much.
I've been watching videos for 3 days! I have novice dive training (all the flips, few twists) and a physics degree. Yours is the first one to get all the physics right and make total sense! Thanks so much!
yes unfortunately there are very few people who know what they're talking about, and worse is that everyone learns of them :( and then i have the task of fixing the problems
The science of twisting is so fascinating--I've been watching (not doing) gymnastics for ages and wondering how gymnasts did twists in the air vs on the floor. I know artistic gymnastics isn't your sport, but do you happen to know what kind of twisting is used for the twisting Yurchenko skills on vault?
these are the only ways to do it. Vault uses a combination of all, contact twist pushing off the table, cat twist as they snap straight from an arch into a straight shape as they drop an arm or elbow to the side, whilst also going from a slightly wider shape into a small shape. It's all the same just a lot faster and everything is on a smaller scale because it doesn't take much to spin a body when skis aren't attached
Every time I come back to this video to learn how twist, it blows my mind and I feel like I've unlocked something in my head! I hope I can properly put this into practice now!
My cheerleading couch is the first person that I heard saying “biomechanics of twisting” then he show me how in reality this is how you should start doing it after that add your own style! (I also practice Parkour, on there the twisting technique feel like you don’t get into the flip just the twist)
Wow! this was explained beautifully, didn't even realize I did all of this stuff!! I'm going to try out some of these techniques once I get to another trampoline :)
That was amazing! Thank you! So much miss-information on RUclips, it's just embarrassing. Really appreciate the quality scientific information! I have been on a trampoline for most of my life and have a background of 8 years in competitive gymnastics. I thought I knew how all of this worked, I can certainly do a lot of it instinctively, but this just showed me how little I truly understood. This is an invaluable resource for me as an athlete and as an instructor. Thanks again!
I think you're such an amazing coach. Thanks for giving us a lot of tips to improve our acrobatics. I would like to see english subtitles on the videos. Send you greetings from Colombia.
Your vids are amazing so I subscribed. This is perfect because I have always dreamed of becoming an Olympian for trampolining ever since I heard about it and started it, and you know how to do stuff properly! Thanks for the awesome vids!
Thank you so much for this video!!!! I learned how to do my full on my trampoline at home and now I can do it on the floor alone!! This video helped so much!!!!!!
You have out a lot of effort in this tutoriale, I really aporeciate that- keep it going man I know how hard it is to make a big RUclips channel, But be consistent, upload and you will succeed!✌️💪
This is definitely my favorite video of yours! As a coach I couldn't explain the physics behind twisting better if I tried! I use these videos a ton for my students so I really appreciate it! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!! This video is so incredible and helped so much. I taught myself to do a full on my trampoline at home without any technique but now it is so much better!!
Hi David! I was wondering if you'd considered doing a tutorial for a GOOD Rudi? :P Also just a big thank you for the tutorials you've posted so far. The quality of the information and the attention to detail is unparalleled. After 2 years I can confidently say I have a solid backfull mostly thanks to this video. ( How this doesn't have more views than those hypo-vlogger-trampoline-kids is beyond me m8 -_- )
and yes sadly people want hyped up leasrn this as fast as possible videos, from self taught acrobats who actually don't understand what they're doing. That's why mine isn't as interesting, it's a long explanation, and requires actual practice
Stoked to hear you're considering it!! It's not everyday you get an Olympian throwing up professional quality tutorials on youtube. Thanks again man! 🤙
My body forgot what a back full felt like shortly after high school graduation - once my practice time decreased. I would do a back layout to a "Y" and then I would pull my arms in to one side and then look over that shoulder. I slowly degraded to a "contact back-full" (probably because I started to twist earlier and earlier as I forgot what my arms were supposed to do). But then I eventually degraded to a "back-head drop" lol. I've been afraid to try them again ever since. I'll have to try your arm drop technique to see if I can work back up to a proper back-full again. Thanks for the video!
+Daniel Schmidt oh it will work! it's physics. it'll come down to you wanting to do it properly without "trying" to do the bad habits, start from the start.
this is exactly the video i was looking for. i have been able to do a backfull for a while but it was really ugly. now with your help its waaaaaay better! thanks man
Don't panic! haha There are plenty of other ways to get twists done, eg. throwing your head into it, whipping your body around and twisting off the ground. This is simply the way the mechanics work and that's all. As I'm glad you've discovered, they do work efficiently, but you will over time develop your own "style" and the way that feels best for you.
Don't leave out the Head It is the key to knowing where you are along with the Eyes keeping them open is VERY important and looking in the right direction can make the difference of knowing where you are going and getting totally lost and freaking out...Also it is important in the future to learn your back twisting skills in the same direction as your front twisting skills.it does make multiple twisting skills much easier to learn.!!! Many people forget to keep their entire body tight from the tip of their toes to the tips of their fingers, weather they are extended up or twisting keeping tight body control is also Very important to an effortless twist. Also twisting in the same direction forwards and backwards helps .....
the rudi tutorial is blended into the doublefull video. Concepts are the same, mechanics are the same, but you're just facing the other way and need a slightly different start, as demonstrated in the vid :)
Sabacca drill (7:20 in the video) is the exact drill you want for arabians, just pulling into a tuck and bringing it the the feet. Vision on take-off is neutral to ensure no pre-turn and then once off the ground, spot behind as the body rotates to be squared off with the floor.
I finally understand what I'm doing now! I learned tilt twist from watching aerial skiers, but whenever I would be at my trampoline parks, I noticed everyone there did back fulls with contact twists. Everything is closed for COVID now, so I'm learning to flip on t he ground. What's the best method for back fulls on grass?
Back full on the ground is pretty much all contact twist and you may be able to sneak some arm drops in but the main thing is pulling the knees through the rotation and twist
I have my back full pretty good but honestly I just throw my arms 2 the side and try to land but it looks professional tho but I'm still watching videos so I can try to understand the movement and I think this helped it alot😊😊😉😉
This is for form though, I'm self taught and use contact twisting and throwing my arms diagonally over my shoulder. A lot of people people do this and spin incredibly fast
it does spin incredibly fast, no doubt about that, there's nothing wrong with contact twist and being a bit messy. It's just safer to do it neatly and for people with less acrobatic ability, possibly easier to learn. Off axis twisting is really fun and very fast but only used in a few sports, i'm a big fan of it though
David Morris Aerial Skier yeah, tricking, parkour, free running and garden trampolining (these aren't proper sports but a lot of people do them) all use it.
yes of course, but if you have no clue where you are in the air, which way the ground is, it's much easier to learn it this way, because it eliminates of a lot of variables, then once you're acrobatically talented, you can throw it off axis. i taught myself off axis later on, and can definitely do more twists that way (5)
one of the best tutorials out there! without a gymnastics background or anything i would like to learn a back full, im able to do back flips and layouts although my layouts are very bad in my opinion. When i do a layout i end up about 1.5/2m behind my starting point. Do you have a tip solution or drill i could try?
that means your whole body is tipping backwards onto your heels in order to create the angle for rotation. Do the Backdrop drills until they're amazing, making sure that you are pushing out of your toes off the trampoline. A drill i use for people who struggle with this is to start at the end of the trampoline, heels nearly on the springs, and jump forwards (but rotating backwards) to your back, to learn how to press the hips into rotation rather than completely relying on a lean back.
the science behind it is why it's different to other videos, it's easy to show someone what to do. Although most videos to this very wrong, understanding WHY you're doing it will hopefully help you fix small problems
This tutorial is helping me so much! But I am still struggling with one thing, the spotting. When I spin I don't know where I am, even though I can land a round off Full on the floor. Where should I be looking when I spin?
this is a tricky one because it depends on your twist timing. Basically i would say don't look for it at all until the end. Takeoff and twist with a neutral head and when you start to prepare for landing and stop the twist, then you look. If you twist left you look left and vice versa for right twisting, the ground will come into view.
Hi man, I'm having an issue with arching back too much when twisting wich leads to overrotating double fulls. What's the worst about this issue is that I've been doing this for 3 years now wich means it's very hard to unlearn that. Could you give me any tips or drills that I could do to get rid of that issue? Thanks you, and very usefull and detailed tutorial!
well obviously these drill swill help if you run through them and try and do them this way rather than the way that feels comfortable to you. to fix a back arching problem, you'll really need to work on back layouts a lot more, i suspect they have an arch also, and then once you twist it gets more exaggerated. practice doing back tuck / pike / and layouts, in a row one after each other to teach yourself how to takeoff and set different rotations and also how to feel different rotations. the good ol' (and very annoying) back pike is a really good skill to learn to pull your feet over the rotation with you, instead of throw your head. watch the "how to do a good backsault" video for this one i think that will be very helpful
Hello, Davis! How to make a front twist? The back twist to the left begins with the lowering of the left hand, the right one with the right hand! As I understand from the training cradle 1/2 twist is done to study the front twist! And there is just the opposite: for the front twist to the left, the right hand drops! I understand correctly? But it's uncomfortable! Especially when I jump half front twist and lower the right hand, I turn to the right! Thanks for the answer!
you are correct, front twist and right arm drop will spin left. I think you are trying to twist too early and throwing your body into the twist which isn't really a right arm drop, it is more like a cartwheel. if you wait until you are upside-down before you drop your arm it will twist in the correct direction
Really great video thanks!! I just have one question - is this twist not more a result of the conservation of angular momentum when changing the lever distance? I'm trying to wrap my head around the physics of it and can't quite cognize how tilting off axis generates the twist in this instance.
it is conservation of angular momentum, and a transfer of rotation into a perpendicular plane resulting in the body twisting to maintain a stable flight, otherwise it would wobble out of control just like a frisbee without enough spin. One may also explain it as when o ne side is lengthened or shortened with an arm drop, it will in turn get slower or faster respectively in the direction of travel resulting in the determined direction of twist, left or right.
the length of the lever (arm) and the force behind it determines the bodies counter reaction and therefore how far off axis you become resulting in how fast you will spin
Hello David, I'am from the Netherlands, and I have a problem. My problem is that my body the rotation to my left side can't. I make than no BackFull, but a normal 360 without backflip. Can you help me with this problem, and give me tips? Thanks, and keep going!
Hi! Not sure if you’ll respond but I have a question. I have my back full down to a pinch with completely straight body and straight arms but I’m having issues getting enough rotation to do a double full. Any tips?
you will need a little bit more power because the twist takes a little energy away from the actual flip. not a whole lot more, but if you set a higher and slower layout, you'll have more time to get the double twist in. It'll come down to how you're doing the double twist, if we're going to be completely mechanical (i'd suggest trying into a pit first or off a diving board) after you drop your first arm to the side, once your have rotated a half twist in that position (with one arm still held up) you then switch them, the other will come down and your first arm drop will lift back up next to your head, that will make you spin very quickly. It won't look nice because one arm is up but once you're feel how it generates twist power you can then make it look nice by cutting the switch movement a little short, and wrapping your arms into your body.
Thanks a lot, it's really helpful! However, unitl now I only managed to do a half twist - 3/4, I really struggle to add the very last half-quarter twist. Could you tell me what I need to improve, like my twisting speed or the position of my arms during the process?
chances are your body isn't tight, or you'have an arch etc. for the best twist, body should be as straight as possible, that's why doing a bigger one is easier because then you don't have to break form to get your feet to the ground. try and keep you arms as straight as possible for as long as you can, and do not look for the ground until you are coming down
if you just do a straight layout backflip and just drop one of your arms and keep the other one out to the side will you twist automatically into a full
keeping one arm out to the side will slow you down because it's a very wide shape so you would struggle to make it around but it's definitely possible if you do it right. If you takeoff and drop only one arm and keep the other one lifted up by your head then you'll have a much easier time twisting. One arm drop is enough for a full twist easily, and even a double twist if you make it a powerful movement and stay very tight.
Henry de mallmann I have found a way to fix this. All you have to do is tense your core the entire flip and you will see significant changes. Also if you can start the flip before twisting
Incredible! Thank you!
did you seriously need this lol
i guess you will never see this cause you stopped uploading :( loved your videos.
will you ever upload something?
yeah.
Hi
amazing!!! finally somebody used physics to explain the twists! Street trickers are nice, but we need to respect the pros!!!

I’ve been trying to dial in my front full for a few years now. This makes twisting seem so simple. Thankyou
It's always easy in theory. But I hope some better understanding of how it works will put the pieces together for you

This tutorial is helping me so much! But I am still struggling with one thing, the spotting. When I spin I don't know where I am, even though I can land a round off Full on the floor.

this is a tricky one because it depends on your twist timing.

If you twist left you look left and vice versa for right twisting, the ground will come into view.

to fix a back arching problem, you'll really need to work on back layouts a lot more, i suspect they have an arch also, and then once you twist it gets more exaggerated. practice doing back tuck / pike / and layouts, in a row one after each other to teach yourself how to takeoff and set different rotations and also how to feel different rotations.
the good ol' (and very annoying) back pike is a really good skill to learn to pull your feet over the rotation with you, instead of throw your head.
watch the "how to do a good backsault" video for this one i think that will be very helpful
Okey thank you for all the information!

Should one wait until the moment when the head is down or earlier to lower the hand?
Please explain Full in🙏🙏
Hello David,
I'am from the Netherlands, and I have a problem.
David Morris Aerial Skier I’ll be practicing to get it down tonight! Thank you!
One arm drop is enough for a full twist easily, and even a double twist if you make it a powerful movement and stay very tight.
thanks so much!
I have a problem I can’t stay straight when I full so it is really slow
@tidybananas i have the same problem
Henry de mallmann I have found a way to fix this. All you have to do is tense your core the entire flip and you will see significant changes. Also if you can start the flip before twisting
Hey! Does anyone have a list of the drills he did?
I’m using the tilt technique but I’m not going much further than a half, any tips?
I would need to see a video
Lol I’ve been to that exact bounce, its in Victoria
How do I get myself to do the 3/4 front while keeping my body straight
